Man,
Darker Side
is a barrel of laughs, isn't it?

Got very far in it using the Peach Amiibo as a life-giving cheat, but still haven't completed that one yet.

I'm only about 80 moons in but what an utterly charming game. I've not seen anything difficult yet but glad it gets real later on. I doubt I'll manage 999 moons, I usually take a break at some point from Mario games then when I get back into it everything is too hard as Im rusty :D Hopefully wont happen with the versatility of the Switch where I can get a couple of moons in before bed to keep my hand in. (fnar)

Can I let you into a secret? I love Mario games but only ever get to about 50% complete.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

I hit the 850 Moon mark last night, but have hit several bumps in the road.
Some of the 'Master Cup' Koopa Races are seemingly impossible.
Its looking very like I'll fall short of 100% completion by about 10 Moons.

Also the
Silent Running Robots in the giant greenhouse
made me squee like a small girl

Hmm.

I'm currently at around the 650 mark.

I haven't 'cheated' by googling anything (or buying any hints from Toad) yet, but I'm just baffled as to how there can possibly be 15-20 moons left on some levels when I have seemingly picked them clean and explored every single nook and cranny.

There are also a few missing ones that I just cannot fathom, such as the single outstanding moon on the ruined kingdom level. I've searched high and low and just can't find any hint of where it might be.

Yeah, some of the races are incredibly tough. Generally I've found that success lies in finding a quicker alternate route. The bouncy race in the snow level is extremely frustrating - in fact there's a hell of a lot of hellishly difficult bits I'm putting off for now. Some bits of this game border on trolling in how they are calculated to punish you - especially the deliberate lack of checkpoints, which seems uncharacteristically mean-spirited for a Nintendo game. Darker Side in particular is an absolute nightmare in this respect - I just don't have the energy to even try again for the foreseeable future - ditto the jump rope and beach volleyball.

360 moons in and I can see there are ones I'm just not going to bother with at this point. I just cba with races (I avoid them in games like AC too) If I can get to Link Primes count I'll be happy I've had my moneys worth though. Still awesome.

I wouldn't consider the Toad / Amiibo hints cheating Rad- I used that a few times only to find the Moon location, but obtaining it generally remained a challenge.

Google is of course definitely cheating, and I'm afraid I'll have to go the Cheaty McCheaterson route from here on in- over 950 Moons now, and the remaining few are more frustrating than anything else.
Like the disappearing road on Dark Side- I mean c'mon...

I've actually got to the end of that fucker twice now (the key is using a combination of triple jump, long jump, roll and mid air dive to maximise speed) but just missed grabbing the first moon both times. It's heartbreaking.

Generally I'm relying on the free parrot hints for now. Seems like he'll dish out three at a time, though some are so vague as to be meaningless.

That 2nd skipping rope Moon is a joke- I had zero moral reservations using this glitch; https://kotaku.com/super-mario-odyssey-players-use-glitch-to-break-jump-ro-1820622068

Get it done before its patched!

Woolly

I'm with James Stacey - about 320 moons in, and reaching the end of my Mario skills (or lack of).
Christ, but it's been a blast so far. Sheer gaming bliss

Even with the Toad hints I'm still finding the last few moons on each level frustratingly vague, and it simply isn't fun any more going round and round the same levels fruitlessly searching, so I finally snapped and resorted to googling the solutions on a few odd occasions.

If I had to pick a fault with this (nigh on perfect) game, it would be that some of the challenges aren't what I would ever call 'fun', with a few being outright tedious slogs that just need to be endured. I'm thinking especially of the koopa races, the trace walks, the jump rope and the volley ball as well as several others.

the trace walks

Da Vinci would've had a meltdown trying to achieve the perfect circle for the 2nd Trace Walk in the Moon Kingdom.

Think I (eventually) got 96 on that one!

I've found the trick on those is to use the rocks as reference for your position, and shift the camera angle around as you walk to get a better sense of spatial awareness.

After that it's just a case of perseverance until you finally luck out.
