Title: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Post by: Goaty on 17 February, 2016, 04:05:30 PM
As James Gunn post this message on Facebook;

Official photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has started, and I couldn't be more stoked.

My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, so I'm glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined.

The last few days around here with him and our other new cast members, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Chris Sullivan, have been some of the best of my life. I never thought anyone was missing from our island of misfit toys, but now that these folks are here there feels like there was.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Glenn Close are all returning.

We'll have more surprises for you in the coming months. But, for now, this will have to do.

I have to get back to set!

Have the entire Monkey series on boxset as of  few years ago now. Still haven't watched them all since then, but the first time I tired I nodded off to sleep no long into the first episode, and I have the new one they made, which isn't that good, but the same actor cameos' as the old Monkey spirit teasing new guy before he'd give him a jug of water he so desperately needs.

Watching Guardians of the Galaxy, not the sequel, but the first one.

While reconnecting both third and second generation consoles in the lounge room. I'm surprised X-Box 360 worked so easily. Just haven't figured how get it on the wireless network yet and now I'm working on the PS Three now. I think left one the essentials devices for it at home.

Y'see this is why Marvel win every time -

"Kurt Russell is playing Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 and he goes by the name of Ego, also known as The Living Planet."

Honestly, my one big issue with the MCU is that sequels have very different aesthetics to the orignals. Iron Man 1 through 3 feel like completely different entities rather than a linked whole, and I really appreciate Gunn sticking to a wining formula, as it looks like Part 2 of GotG is giving us more of the same. And thats a good thing for sure.

Kurt Russell was arsom in that last Fast & Furious movie (number 43 in the series?) and I remember thinking that man should get more work. Really looking forward to seeing him in this. Really hope his character is a cocky arsehole, he plays those really well.

Baby groot merchandise though, there's going to be loads. I remember a review of GotG volume 1 stating it was the kind of movie where kids would love all toys, which can't really be said for the rest of of the MCU. Lots of cool spaceships.

Picked up the soundtrack this morning - it's quality:

1. "Mr. Blue Sky" – Electric Light Orchestra
2. "Fox on the Run" – Sweet
3. "Lake Shore Drive" – Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah
4. "The Chain" – Fleetwood Mac
5. "Bring It on Home to Me" – Sam Cooke
6. "Southern Nights" – Glen Campbell
7. "My Sweet Lord" – George Harrison
8. "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" – Looking Glass
9. "Come a Little Bit Closer" – Jay and the Americans
10. "Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang" – Silver
11. "Surrender" – Cheap Trick
12. "Father and Son" – Cat Stevens
13. "Flash Light" – Parliament
14. "Guardians Inferno" – The Sneepers featuring David Hasselhoff (this is an original song written by Gunn...good fun, disco mix, Hoff singing, silly lyrics...most likely the closing credits theme)

Classic 70's rock is a bit of a trope in trailers/films these days (no complaints I love it but see ALL RECENT TRAILERS - THE BUBBLE WILL BURST) - however, slippin' a bit of P-Funk in there? Ohhhhh yeah.

from the movie thread I'll just cut and paste
I am Groot, I am groot....I am Groot i am Groot,  I am Groot, I am Groot....I AM GROOT!!!!!!

Just got back from Guardians ot The Galacxy Vol 2 - it was Groot!!!!!  I mean really really Groot, probably one of the Grootest movies I've seen this year.  Easily as Groot as the first one if not better (first one might just have it as it came as such a supprise but this one is expected to be great).
Some really nice eater eggs for Marvel fans and Stans cameo has to be his best yet
He telling a bunch of Watchers about his cameos in various movies!!!
The main cast is Groot again, Baby Groot is awww shucks so cute but not annoyingly so, added depth to Rocket and even the returning Nebula and Yondu work out really well
Yondu in particular, wont go into details but I nearly shed a tear
Kurt Russel as EGO the lioving Planet works perfectly even though you'd wonder how the hell can they pull something like a living planet off in a film they do it.  Sylvester Stallone has only a small part but does well.  I'm really glad Gunn is back to do Part 3 he's knocking these out of the park, 2 for 2 so far now if he can get out the difficult 3rd album these will go down as the greatest trilogy of the Marvel movies.

I really liked it but it couldn't surpass the original in any way.

It took longer to resolve character arcs & get to action scenes and at times the main plot resembled a 1960s Star Trek episode, for good and bad.

Go see but no classic but a definite B+ with a lot of heart by the end. STICK WITH IT!
During the movie you may really wonder where it is going, or if its ever going to get there.

I think James Gunn just achieved way too much in the original.

I loved it.  I thought it was actually better than the first one.  Just the opening scene with baby Groot dancing to ELO while they battled that thing in the background had me pissing myself.

My girls were thoroughly entertained too.  It's great for them not to be bored at all during a 2 hour+ plus film.

Awesome!

Man, I didn't even mention what a crowd pleaser Baby Groot was. It could have been so easy for a character like this to fall into Minion territory nonsense comedy, but instead, as the Munkeh points out, every scene he was in raised a smile.

Hmmmm....just back from seeing it and sadly I thought that it was not a good film.

I'm a big fan of the original, dragging many people along to the cinema to see it. This one had many problems. For me, a lot of the humour fell flat, Drax laughed far too much (it got really tiresome), baby groot was really not my thing and did feel manipulative and the narrative was a complete mess. I felt like they tried to identify what people liked the most from the first film then just try and build a film out of those scenes repeated over and over. It felt like a series of scenes joined together one after another rather than a cohesive narrative.  Oh, and waaaay too much schmaltz.  The emotional scenes in volume 1 actually packed a punch.....here it felt forced

Disappointed with this one.  I was in a full cinema, and the audience was very quiet, none of the audience reaction that I experienced when watching the first film in the cinema.

I always give something like this a second chance (to make sure that I wasn't just in a bad mood), so will catch it again at some point with lowered expectations firmly in place to see if I enjoy it any more.

Three of us went to see this today, I thought it had many problems, another person actively disliked it and the last person (admittedly a bigger Marvel fan than me) thought it was mostly enjoyable.

Not a patch on the first one 😟

I liked it! Probably on par with the first. Same formula with all these films - all the different battles going on at once at the end for starters, but it wasn't taking itself seriously and the effects were good and a few laughs were had. My cinema tittered throughout especially at
The Hoff
and Baby Groot. Speaking of Groot his re-gen time is very slow - in the first film limbs were sprouting all over the shop!

I was a little worried given the muted/mixed responses I've seen here and elsewhere, but I had a blast with it. I'd heard a lot of complaints that it was just the first film over again and that nothing of note happens, and I couldn't disagree more. Audience I saw it with loved it too. All of the jokes landed and there was laughter and applause throughout.

Yeah, there's some slightly ropey plot stuff that doesn't quite hang together, all the major plot beats are pretty obviously telegraphed and the ending is a little over the top, but pound for pound I'd say its a more entertaining film than the first (we rewatched it recently and man, that first exposition-packed half hour is a real slog).

A worthy follow up and easily the strongest Marvel sequel so far for my money.

Also, I'm probably not the first person to point this out, but it's nice to see a Cliffhanger reunion!

Just saw this - I was surprised to find I enjoyed it far more than the first one. I thought the first one was sort of ok, at a push, but I found the characters, Quill in particular, much more likeable this time around. And
"I'm Mary Poppins!"
got a proper laugh out of me. It was also good to see
some of the real Guardians, particularly Martinex and Charlie-27
.

Saw it, Loved it!

Many funny moments! One does make me laugh loud was
Pac-Man
!

"You betrayed the code".

Scene when I was the only one laughing in the cinema.

I caught this at the weekend and I enjoyed it way more than the first one. Drax was the best thing in it for me (not Baby Groot) but he did laugh too much. Great CGI for
young Ego / Kurt Russell
.

I liked it. It was pretty funny in places. It didn't take itself seriously at all ( which actually became a bit of a problem ). Overall style over substance really, but as my brother put it a "feel good movie".

I caught this a second time, and though I still don't think that it was anywhere near the quality of the first one, my opinion mellowed and I did enjoy it more second time around.

Very enjoyable film, my kids absolutely adored the turd and penis exchanges, but I felt the Yondu & Rocket escape sequence dragged on a bit too long and highlighted again the overpowered nature of the knife missile arrow relative to every other weapon and beastie in the film.

There was perhaps less of a sense of scale than was achieved in the first one, and I found Stallone quite distracting (and confusing), but it did a great job of feeling like a logical continuation of the story rather than a contrived sequel, or another piece in the MCU Infinity Gauntlet saga.

Drax and Mantis were surprise highlights for me. But my goodness did those end credits go on and on...

Still amazed that I get to watch this kind of high quality fun SF film on a regular basis!

"Culture" fan?
Iain M. Banks is sorely missed. My favourite book series, such a loss that there will be no more.

Really late to the party on this one, but it's another two thumbs up from me.
A perfectly balanced soup of genre entertainment.
My only minor complaint was that it needed a bit more Ben Browder in the chowder.

Hadn't a clue about those references as I was never into the comic.
So this is what most people experience when watching 90% of the post credits scenes.

As an aside for all the AFOL forum users; I can personally testify that the new Lego Milano set is just gorgeous, and goin dirt cheap on Amazon at the moment; https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-76081-Guardians-Faceoff-Abilisk/dp/B01J41HQ6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500026145&sr=8-1&keywords=lego+milano

That's a great set! No mean feat fitting 4 minifigs (and Groot) into a working cockpit on that size of kit. I love that they've built the interdimensional wotsit from bricks rather than using some boring cast pieces. But as always with these things, annoying that they've given us Nebula instead of Rocket, necessitating another purchase. And even though you get the gorgeous Mantis minifig with that second set, still you have to get another to get Yondu. Bastards.

Bastards.

With a lower cap 'b'.
Of course I had to pick up a second set to get Rocket (the poly-bag of the minifigure alone cost more than the full set on online), but it was a fun set too.
I missed out on the 1st iteration of the Milano a few years back, and although it was much larger I prefer the look of the 2017 model.
Will be modifying it to create a larger cockpit and wingspan as soon as I get the chance.

Well it only came out Sunday! I've had that track on heavy MP3 rotation for months, but I still never imagined I'd be watching Karen Gillan and Zoe Saldana as backing dancers for David Hasslehoff. What a time to be alive.

I thought I recognised Zoe, but I didn't notice Karen! (I'm sure I saw her, I mean I didn't recognise her.)

Shame on me. Another viewing is in order..

Most of the cast is in there, I think, along with Gunn himself, although some are harder to spot than others. Hours of fun for all the family!

Okay, now you've mentioned her Karen is pretty obvious. I just didn't recognise her in that setting with the fluffy hair and makeup! (In my defence, I haven't yet seen GotG 2 and I forgot she was in it). I'm sure the guys are people I should recognise too, but the wigs and sunglasses shine so bright man!

Once I've seen the film, hopefully I'll recognise a few more. The video hasn't got old yet.

That song, and resulting video, is the work of genius.

Rooker and Bautista (in the video) are fantastic.

That fell a bit flat for me. Everyone was overpowered and indestructible (which you expect from Superman and Wonder woman bit not this lot). Plot meandered too much and when it did kick in you thought "Yeah, I've seen that episode of Star Trek/Futurama/whatever."

Half the jokes fell flat, 40% were in the trailer but some worked.

I did like the fact it wasn't a stomp universe conquering evil set out from the get go. But what they did deliver felt dull and lacked threat or any building sense of dread.

Can we stop doing swarms of spacecraft now please?

Gorgeous to look at though.

Same here. Loved the first film, which felt like a breath of fresh air. The second one was... fine. Which pretty much sums up every superhero film I've seen since, well, the original Guardians.

The plot was the main offender in GOTG 2.
Everything just ground to a halt when the team reached planet Ego and what followed was about half an hours worth of dull exposition.  ::)
