Help! / Cannon's Dredd film poster - what prog?
02 August, 2006, 05:50:06 PM
Long before he helmed the Dredd movie, Danny Cannon sent in his design for a Dredd film poster and it was published in an issue of 2000 AD - but what prog?

[I know, it was reprinted in the first issue of JD: LotF, but I'd like to see it in context of the original prog.]

Bueller? Anybody?

Help! / Prog 1 - Invasion dialogue - last page
27 July, 2006, 08:56:40 PM
Help! I'm hard at work on the TPO book and can't find my copy of Prog 1. So, I need some helpful soul to check Bill Savage's dialogue when he shoots the Volgan. (I think the strip is reprinted in Extreme Edition #3, if that's any help to anyone...)

I need an exact transcript of the dialogue, to compare against what Pat thinks got censored...

Bill: Go on, run, Volg - I'm not going to shoot you.

Then, as the Volg runs off...

Bill: I LIED (as he shoots the Volg in the back).

So, can anybody help?

Other Reviews / EE17: The Law at War!
11 July, 2006, 05:32:59 PM
Got my copy of Extreme Edition 17 today. Features The Corps by Garth Ennis [and ghostwriter Si Spencer on one episode], Paul Marshall and Colin MacNeil; Maelstrom by Robbie Morrison and MacNeil; and a bonus story - Winter by Morrison and Kev Walker. Blood and thunder in body armour!

Snuck in a page of Chris Cunningham [nee Halls] concept art for Maelstrom - I'd forgotten he was ever involved with the series. IIRC, an American artist almost ended up drawing Maelstrom, a guy called something like Ted Neigh? Neff? But he dropped out. His name still pops up on US projects every now and then, so I guess he's still in the business and doing well.

Well, some kindly person bought my beloved Jim Murray cover painting of Ukko from Prog 1011 on auction at eBay, contributing ?475 to the tax fund bill.

I've relisted the Murray, Brashill & Sampson artwork pin-up of the Space Girls at a lower price, and added my last piece of 2000 AD art as a new listing...

Cover art, Prog 1127, Simon Davis paints Sinister Dexter for the opening episode of Eurocrash - starting price of ?250.

Classifieds / Rare Jim Murray art for sale
19 May, 2006, 07:50:03 PM
Regrettably, I'm got a large tax bill looming, so I've put two pieces of original art up for sale on eBay. If my web fu fails me, just go to ebay.co.uk and search for 2000AD original art, that should get you to my listings.

The pieces in question are Jim Murray's cover painting of Ukko as a court jester from Prog 1011; and the Jim Murray-Jason Brashill-Steve Sampson "jam" painting of the Space Girls, from the back cover of the Sex Prog.

I've put large price tags on both of these as I want them to find a good home. If they don't sell, I won't be too upset either - just thinking about parting with them is a horrible wrench.

Help! / These are the droids I'm looking for
18 April, 2006, 06:51:56 PM
For a certain project I'm working on [possibly featuring the initials O, P and T, but not in that order], I'd like to interview the 2000 AD contributors listed below. Can anybody here help me track down these elusive talents?

Peter Milligan
Alan Hebden
Tom Tully
Michael Fleisher
Hilary Robinson
Roy Preston
Bob Bartholomew
Jack Adrian

Annoyingly, I had Jack Adrian's snail mail address a month ago but have managed to lose it again - tsk!

Anyway, if anyone can help, you can pipe up here or email me direct: david@davidbishop.co.uk

Thanks!

News / Button Man bought by Dreamworks
13 January, 2006, 01:30:00 PM
Those with long(ish) memories will recall Button Man was optioned last May by two producers who contributed to 'A History of Violence' getting made. Well, Hollywood trade paper Variety today reports the pair have sold the property on to Dreamworks and writers are pitching for the project next week...

'Button' pic sewn up at DreamWorks
Braun and Kass will produce graphic novel adaptation
 By IAN MOHR

"A History of Violence" exec producers Josh Braun and Roger Kass have sold off rights to "Button Man: The Killing Game" -- a graphic novel by John Wagner and Arthur Ranson -- to DreamWorks for a bigscreen adaptation.

"Button" is a stylish thriller about a group of jaded millionaires who pit their own personal assassins against each other in a clandestine, deadly game. Braun and Kass will produce the pic, with DreamWorks' Mark Sourian overseeing for the studio. Project came to DreamWorks' attention when CAA brought it to Steven Spielberg.

"Violence" was adapted from another graphic novel by Wagner co-penned with Vince Locke.

"Button" producers are taking pitches from scribes in Los Angeles next week to adapt the project.

Exciting news, although there's a long way to go yet.

News / History of Violence gets WGA nom
05 January, 2006, 09:35:08 PM
Variety reports the following:

++++++++++++++++++

Showbiz writers have rewarded independent features and issues-oriented dramas -- along with offbeat comedy "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" -- in Writers Guild of America screenplay nominations.

Announced Wednesday, noms in the original category went to Universal's "Cinderella Man," screenplay by Cliff Hollingsworth and Akiva Goldsman, story by Hollingsworth; Lionsgate's "Crash," screenplay by Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco, story by Haggis; U's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," written by Judd Apatow & Steve Carell; Warner Independent's "Good Night, and Good Luck," written by George Clooney & Grant Heslov; and Samuel Goldwyn's "The Squid and the Whale," written by Noah Baumbach.

Adapted screenplay noms went to Focus' "Brokeback Mountain," screenplay by Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana, based on the short story by Annie Proulx; Sony Classics' "Capote," screenplay by Dan Futterman, based on the book by Gerald Clarke; Focus' "The Constant Gardener," screenplay by Jeffrey Caine, based on the novel by John le Carre; New Line's "A History of Violence," screenplay by Josh Olson, based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke; and Warner Bros.' "Syriana," written by Stephen Gaghan, based on the book "See No Evil" by Robert Baer.

WGA nominee 'A History of Violence' is unusual in that it's adapted from a graphic novel. "I'm just knocked out; if this is as good as it gets, it's more than enough," said Olsen, noting "A History of Violence" was his first studio pic.

Winners will be announced Feb. 4 in simultaneous ceremonies at the Hollywood Palladium and Gotham's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

General / Do bad threads always end with question marks?
29 December, 2005, 08:08:23 PM
Joking, I'm joking! But the propensity of thread titles ending in question marks reminds of a drinking session I once had with a Daily Mail journalist (yes, he was ashamed of himself).

He said anytime you saw a headline in the Mail (ditto London's Evening Standard) that ended with a question mark, the answer to the question was almost always no. The same rule of thumb might well apply to threads with titles that end in question marks.

Try it and see for yourself...

General / Black Flame cover - proper colours

I stumbled across the cover for my third Nikolai Dante novel on the Black Flame site, featuring an original painting by John Burns. Is Dante grabbing hold of what I think he is...?

'The Losers' wins its way to WB
Berg to pen screenplay, co-produce
?
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

DC comic 'The Losers,' about a rogue CIA unit, will get a shot at the bigscreen.

A double-crossed CIA black ops team known as "The Losers" is the latest DC Comics property to be tapped for the bigscreen by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Peter Berg and Akiva Goldsman will produce the pic for the studio, with Berg to pen the screenplay with an eye to direct. Also taking producing credit are John Cameron and Sarah Aubrey for Berg's Film 44, and Kerry Foster for Goldsman's Weed Road.

Film will follow the exploits of the highly skilled CIA team members as they are attacked by their own agency and left for dead. They set out to learn why they were betrayed, and to avenge the wrong, as well as other injustices they encounter.

DC Comics, a subsid of Warner Bros., and home to numerous comicbook heroes including "Batman" and "Superman," revived "The Losers" strip several years ago under the Vertigo imprint after a 30-year hiatus.

Warner Bros. Pictures' Dan Lin and creative exec Matt Reilly are overseeing "Losers" for the studio. Gregory Noveck is the development exec at DC Comics.

Berg, also an actor, is set to direct upcoming projects "The Kingdom" and "Bran Mak Morn." He penned and directed "Friday Night Lights" and helmed "The Rundown" for Universal Pictures, where he has a deal.

Ahh, the joys of living in Scotland - the new prog arrives while the rest of Britain has the day off.

Help! / No Title
11 January, 2005, 08:00:33 PM
Hello all! Am transcribing a Cam Kennedy interview for the Megazine's Interrogation feature and stumbled across something I've having problems proving/disproving. Cam believes Mark Farmer inked one of his Dredd stories - but I can find nothing to support that. Can anyone here help at all? Or supply me with an email address for Mark Farmer?

Anybody?

Cam thought it might be The Falucci Tape, but he also thought it was four parts long (Falucci is three), had been by commissioned by Steve MacManus and post-dated Cam's DC maxi-series The Outcasts, written by Wagner & Grant (could be, but that's 87-88 and puts it after Steve MacManus left 2000 AD).

Help! / MacNeil reader art - in what prog?
10 November, 2004, 10:05:47 PM
Gordon Rennie once did an hilarious article for Speakeasy about 2000 AD reader art by people who later worked for the comic. Can anyone point me to the prog where Colin MacNeil's drawing of Mega-City Warden Judge Peel appeared? (No prizes for guessing who will soon suffer under the third degree for the Meg's Interrogation feature...)

General / Obscure strips for GN collection
22 October, 2004, 03:58:25 PM
What are the most unlikely, obscure or little remembered strips you'd like to see collected under one cover? Here's my Top 10 list from just the Meg, in no particular order...

Al's Baby (226pp for all 3 books) - Wagner & Ezquerra, all colour, all funny

Harke & Burr (86pp) - sumptuous Dean Ormston painted art, written by Si Spencer who's now working with Neil Gaiman for DC

Maelstrom (64pp) - Robbie Morrison & Colin MacNeil, grim & gritty space judges, feel the sturm and drang in the air

Return of the Taxidermist (80pp) - Wagner & Ian Gibson, some of their funniest work ever

Neal & Wigmore collection (75pp) - these two sank without trace after Outlaw bombed in 2000 AD, but their run of Hershey & Dredd stories in the Meg during the mid 90s were really popular and included some powerful stuff

Harmony (74pp) - the first three stories by Trevor Hairsine & Jim Murray - early, hyper-detailed Hairsine art and proto-Murray, plus some solid storytelling by Chris Standley

Dredd: Skar (37pp) - Wagner & Ashley Wood, the latter now a name artist in US comics - throw in Karyn: Visions by Wood to bulk this up to 46pp

Dredd: Brashill collection - Jason never did a long run on any strip, but he painted some one-off Dredd gems during the 90s, nealry all class Wagner scripts

Dredd: Ormston collection - stick Raptaur at the front, but there's a clutch of groovy Ormston strips to go with it - Tea with Mrs Gunderson, Return of Johnny Biker, Fall of the House of Esher, etc

GRennie's B&W Mean strips (56pp) - some classy artists here - Jim Murray, Kevin Walker, Paul Marshall, Wayne Reynolds, Goddard & Teague.

That's my list - now it's your turn...

davidbishop, who should really go do some work.

Help! / Dredd Files needs your help!
08 October, 2004, 06:12:45 PM
An upcoming edition of Dredd Files is going to focus on early Dredd stories from the annuals and sci-fi specials. I've got most of these but am currently missing the following Dredd stories:-

Dan Dare Annual 1979 (published 1978)
Judge Dredd: Ryan's Revenge
Script: Unknown, Artist: Kevin O'Neill

Dan Dare Annual 1980 (published 1979)
Judge Dredd: untitled
Script: Unknown, Artist: Keith Page
Reprinted - Fleetway Quality: Psi-Judge Anderson 08

Can some kindly soul provide me with photocopies of these stories?
