Off Topic / What have I missed?
08 March, 2024, 11:25:21 PM
Due to technical issues*, by which I mean my old computer dying and me having three teenage boys who hog the replacement, I have been off the board for a couple of months.

What have I missed?

*I know, I know, I should have tried cheese.

EDIT: Three months away, and I am still at 0.8 posts a day. Wow. That says more about me than I like.

This is just out today, or maybe released tomorrow. I pre-ordered via CDKeys. I have the code. It's for the GOG platform. The code has not been redeemed.

I would rather it was on Steam and made a mistake ordering.

Anyone fancy buying it from me? £35?

If so, DM me please.

Classifieds / Meg 361 - Anyone got a spare floppy?
19 November, 2023, 09:46:12 AM
My sub copy of Meg 361 was lost in the post. The kind 'bots in the subscriber team sent me a replacement Meg but I've missed out on the floppy. The anal collector part of me is raging at this, as I have all the others

If anyone doesn't keep their's, could you send it to me? Happy to pay postage etc. If you are willing, send me a message please.

Thanks

Done some daft stuff in the past? Learned your lesson? Then pass it on to your sprog.

This is a thread about age. Some of us... should... know better. And the ones to tell it to are our kids.

They're the ones who can learn from us. What I have learned (as the father of an 18, 15, and 13 year old at this point) is that I have a massive influence even though they try to hide it from me. Recently, my oldest went for a job interview. I told him what kind of questions he might expect. He scoffed off to his bedroom, where I then heard him rehearsing answers to my questions. He got the job... out of a few thousand applicants.

So this is a thread for parental pride. For the love of the Sprog.

What have you done to inspire - begrudgingly - your not so little ones?

Tomorrow, my youngest is playing in a football cup final. The Lanarkshire 2010 Cup. I am very proud; their team is one of dozens across various leagues. He is a centre back and better than I ever was, but I like to delude myself that my tips have helped him.

I really hope he does well. And a little part of me thinks he might have got there through my advice...

General / 20th Anniversary
02 February, 2023, 10:58:56 PM
Blimey, I just checked.

I signed up to this forum on 16th January 2003.

20 years of hanging around here! Wow. From Karne to Godpleton to Trout to Shark. Where has the time gone? So many have left the party, but here I am in the forum kitchen still rooting around for another beer. I guess I'll leave when they turn on the lights... or call the police.

General / Subscriber Gifts 2023 (or tat I would like)
24 September, 2022, 12:41:16 PM
Just got my Gary Leach prog and Starlord badge for being a subscriber. I love this stuff.

However, variety would be good too. I now have loads of badges.

What about other things? I would really like a keyring. (This post prompted by me searching for a 2000ad keyring).

Other ideas? Pens, notebooks, a pencil case!

General / Undead crossover event Prog 2300
13 September, 2022, 02:56:50 PM
The trailed undead event is next prog.

Is this a one-off in the Prog and Meg, or is it a series? Anyone know? I would kinda like it to be a mega-epic, but don't want to get my hopes up

Help! / What apocalypse would you recommend?
07 July, 2022, 10:24:49 AM
I'm off on holiday soon and am looking for a decent apocalyptic novel to read. Any recommendations?

Something like The Stand, The Passage, The Road or Swan Song (all of which I've read).

Thank you hive mind, see you in the wasteland!

Megazine / Meg 435 - Waugh In Hell
17 August, 2021, 10:07:33 PM
Got my Meg, and there's no thread!

All a bit bland for me, but Angelic is fun and Waugh redeems it. Which, when you read it, is ironic... as hell.

So, what do we have:

DREDD

This feels a bit like one of those stories where there's a threat of retaliation from another city and then it fades away. I hope not, but I honestly don't know if it's over or not. That can't be a good thing. And there's a fight which could have been a bit more Stan-Lee but is very perfunctory. Jury is out on this. Which can't be good, when the same jury is judge and executioner. Art feels a bit rushed too, especially the last two pages.

DIAMOND DOGS

I feel this is too low key to grab my attention. It's a nice tale of Brit Cit's underbelly, and it's Dredd-world. But it's neither a high-octane thriller nor a character piece and suffers a bit for it.

ANGELIC

This is fun. Nice judge at the end; not sure if this is alternate world or origin story, but I likes it.

THE RETURNERS

I can't wait for this to end. It's confusing, random and seems to go nowhere. I can't tell the characters apart, the fact they were dead seems irrelevant, and for folks who have been through so much they are just too trusting. Haven't they seen any horror film ever?

DEVLIN WAUGH

This is the most fun thing in the Meg in ages. No spoilers, but the change in demeanour makes me think there is a Plan and I am enjoying it being unspooled. I look forward to seeing Devlin in hell - the mind boggles, dear boy!

Couldn't decide on a title, so went with two.

There's just too much choice on telly now. I thought we might apply the Hive Mind to decide what we should be watching. Goodness knows, Mrs X and I can't do it alone.

We've just finished Snowpiercer on Netflix. It's good. It's Sean Bean and Jennifer Connolly, crossed with 1984 and Animal Farm, but on a train.

Thinking about The Glitch. Anyone seen it?

And currently, by virtue of me getting a new work phone that gives a year of Apple, thoroughly enjoying Ted Lasso on Apple. It sounds duff fish out of water stuff - American college football coach manages a Premiership football team - but is oddly fun and a strange mix of the wholesome and the terribly sweary. We've watched 10 episodes in two days.

What's making your eyes square?

EDIT: I have forgotten entirely about the Boxset thread. Just ignore this!

I'm hoping some creative type can help me out.

I'm looking to get a bespoke 50th present for a pal. It would be the dictionary definition of a word, nothing offensive, but a private joke.

I'd look to get it framed.

Does anyone have any idea how I go about getting that? Can anyone recommend a printing service that would help? I'm looking for it A4 sized on card, maybe a little bigger.

Thanks

Poor Colin. All that work on the best Dredds, and then Gamesradar drop this:

https://www.gamesradar.com/best-judge-dredd-comics/

Nice to see some recognition of Dredd, but all that hard work ignored. What kind of hack couldn't be bothered to just lift our list?

And Return of Rico at #4? Helter Skelter at #10?

No City of the Damned?

Mrs X says that there's a movie, a zombie movie, that has an end of the world montage set to R.E.M,'s "It's the End of the World As We Know It."

I say she's mistaken and thinking of the opening to the Dawn of the Dead remake, which has a montage of  Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around".

Yoda-like, she says "No, there is another".

So, who is right? Can anyone name a zompocalypse movie which features a montage set to the End of the World as We Know It? Or even an apocalypse on film?

Grud knows why, but the Hive Mind has been agreed as arbiter of this one.

Help! / Spotify or Amazon Unlimited?

Our family Amazon music account has expired.

It's the same cost to shift to Spotify, which I am thinking of doing. It seems easier to use.

Any views?

Off Topic / It's a bit warm/ wet/ cold outside
24 July, 2019, 09:35:09 AM
Climate change. What's to be done?

Read an article this morning saying that we are on track for a 3 degree increase by the end of the century if carbon emissions do not peak in 2020 and fall by 2030. It also says we have 18 months to do something about it (ie the end of 2020) because any relevant plan will take 10 years to implement.

Otherwise, 25% of species face extinction and the eco-system is fecked.

I don't think anyone disputes that. Action needs taken. But what?

The real issue for me is that the silent majority are too self-centred and short-termist. I am not sure I care (I know I should, I really do) about the extinction of beetles in Peru. And I think I am a fair-minded guy.

Thing is, it's not the end of the world. It's really not. What it is, though, is the end of a way of life.

Surely, the way to kick folk up the arse to do something is to point out the changes that they will need to make, and how much worse things will be the longer we take to do anything meaninful?

Focus not on extinction (which is bad, but which most folk I talk to just don't get moved by). Focus on the price of prosecco, the loss of bananas, the inability to fly to Marbs, the hike in clothing prices as cotton becomes more expensive, migrants fleeing their new-desert homes, the cost/ lack of fuel. Make it relevant to the masses.
