General / Re: Vienna Dredd time conundrum......
23 July, 2006, 05:16:16 PM
>Dredd's gotta be 6'6" plus whatever the boots and helmet add to that - Vienna's the same height as him.

If you look at the perspective in the frame with Vienna & Dredd, you'll see he is standing in the Background and Vienna is in the foreground. The light on Dredd's stomach & face is not blocked by Vienna, so she is NOT standing directly in front of him. They are both talking sideways to each other, therefore Dredd only looks smaller because he's standing in the background.

Ezquerra always said that Dredd wasn't supposed to be much taller than average height anyway He was intended to be just like an average Judge.

>Interesting, but what does it have to do with "Scarlet Traces"?

The name, London murders, victorian setting etc.

Moore has referenced Iain Sinclair's Scarlet Tracings in the appendix of From Hell especially in reference to the chapter that contains the scene of Jack D Ripper drawing the pentagram on the floor of the church.

Iain SInclair had come up with the idea of the murder scenes forming a pentagram. The ripper murders as London psycogeography are referenced in Sinclair's book ala From Hell.

Moore has stated his admiration for Sinclair's books in numerous interviews, also, Moore and From Hell make an appearance in LIghts out for the territory -a book by Sinclair.

The title "Scarlet Traces" is also taken from the Iain Sinclair book "White Cappell/Scarlet Tracings", the book that inspired "From Hell" by Moore about Jack the Ripper. More than coincidence.

I remember Moore talking about LOEG in the mid 90's.

>Really don't think Scarlet Traces (original or new-improved version) bears comparison to LoEG - it's a very different and actually superior work in many ways, and I speak as a RABID Moore and O'Neill fan of many decades standing.

I wasn't saying that the two works were the same in execution but I was merely pointing out the timing of the two things is not coincidental. Anytime Moore brings out new mainstream work others always use the same basic ideas he has utilised for their own work. It's like their waiting for the cue from Moore.

I know the steampunk intertextual thing is not new but when Moore decides to use an idea or style others follow.

A question of timing not style.

Hardly anyone saw or read the first few chapters of lost girls that were released.

I prefer LOEG myself. Why is it when Moore writes about a certain genre or subject we get other writers coverin' the same ground. Will we have a rash of writers doin' serious porn when Lost Girls comes out?
