Have you tried Rufus, BTW, MM? He's no longer active here, but you can still reach him through Facebook ...

Also it'd be worth dropping in to Down The Tubes:

John Freeman is there along with a range of British comics creators and fans. They might be able to help or put the word out to others.
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

The Iron legion has recently been reprinted:

£8.47 from Amazon...

And an absolutely cracking read it is too. The first three Panini Books, Dragon's Claw (fourth Doctor also) and The Tides of Time (fifth Doctor) all feature Gibbons art to one degree or another and all three are brillant reads.

Does anybody know when he was on Hotspur?  I found a small lot of those a few weeks ago - they have some Ron Smith art - but I have not looked through them yet to see what fun might be inside.

I couldn't even find any info that was specific about the title (and, yes, I was spelling DC Thomson correctly when I was searching, Trout), only that Gibbons had done some work for DCT prior to Powerman. Mind you, I'd never turned up the link to that Marvel strip before yesterday ...

Of course the ideal situation would be if someone were to say... interview him and ask him about this, which would make the search easier. Pity that isn't happeni... now wait a minute...

That aside these might be useful, although not complete, no Hotspur, (and the former slightly confusing as it should be in chronological order but some more recent ones sneak in at the top):

Perhaps scraping all the information together can help narrow down a wishlist.

So Chris Weston mentions "Spring-Heeled Jackson":

The man himself confirms a story was in the Hotspur Annual 1978 (hmmmmm now I wonder if I have that? I have a load of old annuals I grabbed at school fairs and the like, were I got a huge stack of Look and Learn from):

Yep I have that Annual but there is no Spring_Heeled jackons in it but there is a very familiar style on the King Cobra story. I'm rubbish at spotting artist but it could be Gibbons although my gut says Ron Smith (same artist seems to have done the cover that can bee seen on that link).

Spring-Heeled Jackson appears in the 1979 Annual:

Just finished flipping through my Hotspurs, from 1980, and there's no Gibbons in them, and I was wrong about Ron Smith, too... I think I just glanced at them, saw King Cobra and assumed it was him, but it's clearly not.

Thanks guys, a massive help - especially that scan of Iron Legion!

FYI, according to Chris Weston, Dave's first strip was "The Wriggling Wrecker" in Wizard, 20 July to 21 December 1974 and his last published pre-2000 AD work was 24 Dec 1977. Though there was a Spring Heeled Jack in the '78 Hotspur annual.

There are a number of fanzine pieces and assorted oddities in this gallery on the Dave Gibbons fan site ...

Cheers!

There's some examples of his early work in one of the Scream specials. Not sure if it was a reprint from a horror fanzine but it was a good example of early Dave Gibbons.

I don't have any scans available but not sure if Back from teh Depths may be able to help locate the original source. The special had an Eric Bradbury Dracula on the front cover.
