Film & TV / Terry Pratchett's Hogfather on Sky 1, 8pm
17 December, 2006, 05:46:04 PM
Anyone planning on watching Hogfather on Sky 1 tonight?
I've just been watching the 'making of' for it, and it was quite masturbatory how much everyone was congratulating themselves on what looks like one of the cheapest, tackiest things on television since they stopped repeating Rentaghost.  The man who plays Mr Teatime needs a right good slap - or at least whoever told him to deliver his lines in that manner does.
Watching this will dovetail nicely with Torchwood - possibly even make it look a lot better as a consequence.

I could be wrong, of course - Hogfather could be the second coming in terms of tv fantasy shows.  I suppose I'll find out at 8 o'clock tonight.

Games / Dead Rising
13 September, 2006, 06:30:21 PM
Anyone played it through yet?
First impressions weren't too great, as it seemed like a warmed-up version of State Of Emergency, but playing it for a bit makes it grow on you.  Graphics aren't as good as you might hope, but that's probably the trade-off for all the onscreen zombie action - the maintainance tunnels are swarming with hundreds of the bastards at any given moment.  It's probably the first 360 game I've actually played and enjoyed thoroughly.
Finally got to finish my first playthrough - shagged the main investigation, so I had to spend all my time chasing down survivors and figuring out how to get the sluggish, tempermental bastards to safety.  Then I was stuck for twelve hours at the end waiting for the chopper, so I spent it mowing down zombies in the park in motorbikes and cars - great fun!  Gave up at 8000 dead.
Some tips would be nice, if anyone could help a brother out...

Is there any trick to killing the convicts in the jeep?
Where's Isabella?
What's the best way of taking out the snipers?
Is there any way to save the people at the very start of the game?

Seems less mental than the American version, but that might be because so much anime floods kids' television these days that it just blends into the background more than the original, which had a distinctive visual style at the time it first came out.
Expect to see a (badly) dubbed version of this appear in the west pretty soon, and for you to be sick to the back teeth of all concerned shortly thereafter...

Futurama commissioned for a new run of 13 episodes.  After the release of the DVD movie, presumeably.

The usual Whovians are off t'Bristol to get sketches of the Gronk, so it falls to ssomeone to start a thread about the Cybermen episode.
Loved to see the zeppelin - ubiquitous or not - in the preview for the episode, and I'm quite looking forward to seeing the big tinfoil goofs clomp about Cornwall.  My only concern is that the alternative Earth's K-9 will lure them all to Fort Knox or something for the deus ex finale - unless the season finale is an invasion of the 'real' Earth by the alternate Cybermen.
Anyway, it'd take an act of self-destructive anti-genius not to do a decent episode here, as you've potentially got the chance for a really fun stand-alone episode with an alternate version of the main cast, where maybe the Doctor is a woman played by Diana Rigg or something.

Why no celebration for the dragon-bothering one?  Okay, so there probably wasn't a dragon, and it's all a metaphor for christian triumph over pagan beliefs or something equally intellectual and beyond my meagre brain-thinkings, but it seems to me that there should be something made of the day.
There's probably a tendancy to look on English nationalism as the ginger stepchild of British nationalism, but that's been hijacked by the BNP and tea-swilling soccer hooligans of late, so surely a less inflammatory form could have its day in the sun?
It's just the Scots have a poet, the Irish have a Spaniard, and even the Welsh have a saint, though god knows what they've got to be proud of, or what hellish act the leek-chewing abomination performed on local sheep to get deified in the eyes of the hill-dwelling rustic simpletons of the valleys, but they still have one, and still celebrate him.
Why not the English, is all I'm asking?

Film & TV / For those with Sky One...

Mysterious Island is on (from nine).  Stars Patrick Stewart as a white Captain Nemo, Kyle Mac-something out of Twin Peaks, and, more importantly, Vinnie 'Juggernaut' Jones, as a pirate.  With tights and sword and everything.

Off Topic / 20 000 reasons to love Paypal
04 September, 2005, 09:38:05 PM
For those of you who may have skipped through Somethingawful.com's pages through the years, you may be surprised to see the website is now more or less kaput after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their servers (which were based in New Orleans).  Setting up a rough website in the aftermath for the purposes of making donations to the American Red Cross, they were less than happy when corporate cocksuckers Paypal froze the donations account after complaints from 'anonymous buyers'.

It would take a far less cynical man than me to ignore that Paypal have been doing this for years, but this strikes me as a particular low.  By sheer chance, the money accrues interest while they hold it elsewhere.  Just thought I'd mention that.  Don't know why.

Film & TV / Fantastic Four
24 July, 2005, 04:29:58 AM
Camp tosh, but quite enjoyable.  Some bad things about the movie; Johnny Storm is so cool he doesn't follow anyone's rules but his own, and he doesn't even follow those!  He's just TOO extreme, etcetera, etcetera - this gets annoying before the character even graces the screen.  Doctor Doom doesn't talk about himself in the third person - unforgiveable!  There's a scene shoehorned in where Jess Alba strips to her smalls FOR NO DISCERNIBLE REASON (although I realise for some, this isn't a negative).  It's corny, full of rubbish lines and unfunny comedy asides, but still worth a watch if only to remind yourself that superhero movies don't have to be elaborate doom and gloom fests - they can be fun too, which is the point, surely?

Oh, and Stan The Man has a cameo as postman Willie Lumpkin, who Marvel-heads will know of as a background character from many a Marvel book over the years.

Suggestions / "Avenge me!"
02 April, 2005, 04:05:50 AM
I don't know why I'm asking such a clean-cut bunch of well-adjusted people as yourselves, but I was wondering if anyone could think of a few good parting shots for when I leave my work forever in a few short weeks?  Something nasty, but not fatal would be preferable.  Stinking the place out, sabotaging the toilets - anything you can think of, I'd appreciate you sharing it with me.
Don't think I won't do it, either - you may assume I'm just a leg-puller because I spend some of my free time pretending to be a bear who teaches mauling to red squirrels, but I really can be a right vindictive bastard when my blood's up, and the dickhead I work for has really got on my tits something rotten now.

Oh, and if it's a good one, I'll photograph the proof and display it here (if possible).

By which I mean it's his birthday, and not just a cheap excuse to point out his freakishly large hand - or is it just that the other one is freakishly small?  Who knows?

Well, it didn't stop the little cunt getting re-elected, but it's still worth reminding ourselves why we hate the little bastard with an unreasonable passion.  Also, check out why Al Gore is a spineless turd as well.
