A definitive edition series for Slaine would be most welcome, but it'd be a killer on the wallet!
I was thinking of a more curated version, just the important stories kinda thing. But... there really isn't much you can cut out without missing too much of the overall tale.
Of course, a definitive edition with healthy royalties for the creators may be a good first step in getting Pat Mills to come back and properly finish it all, but I can't ever see that happening.

Looking forward to seeing the scan/print quality of the Horned God reprint later this year.

Kingpin parody for me, but I see where you're coming from

Quote from: norton canes on 20 December, 2023, 09:47:37 AMOh, wait. Wow. Something just struck me. Re. [redacted]'s appearance in Azimuth - I know it's still three years away, but... could this be seeding events for a massive 50th anniversary GGC multiverse dust-up?

Well could it?

Considering how long it can take for Sin/Dex to get to it's pay-off points, I'd say 'probably'.

As for Strontium Dog...
...I thought it was OK when I read it. Dan Cornwell's art is fantastic as always, and he's definitely the artist I'd like to see follow on from The King (assuming we get any more).
Seeing him punch the abusive lizard a*sehole in the face felt great, and I didn't feel the scene was too over-the-top in it's depictions of abuse. Never even considered it until I read this thread.

My only issue with the SD strip was it being very 'wordy'. Having that much dialogue on the page affected the flow and pace for me, but the story was still strong and I'd like to see more from the Prog's new Rufus.

Will we ever see two Rufus' in the Prog at the same time again? I certainly hope so!

It looks like it has a definite air of Jason Brashill about it, to me.

Yeah, that's definitely a Brashill Dredd.

Off Topic / Re: Comic shop memories

First comic shop: Nostalgia and Comics in Sheffield. (Now Forbidden Planet <shudders>) Also the place where I attended my only ever droid signing - the 1992 yearbooks I think. John Smith, Peter Doherty, Duncan Fegredo, and (I think) Dean Ormston. Really wish I could go back to that point in time and re-live it. At the time I had no idea who anyone was!

Favourite comic shop: The Sheffield Space Centre. It's great. Barely changed since the early nineties. Still the same people running it too, I think.

There's a difference between 'faces all look the same' and 'faces all look like they were drawn by the same artist'.

FWIW I think the art for Enemy Earth is the best thing going for it. Great style, fluid and dynamic action, good storytelling, and a welcome art style. Not sure why some are having an issue telling the characters apart.
(I'll admit the story isn't working for me, but that's no slight on the quality of the strip. I'm sure it rightfully has it's fans.)

Same goes for Nick Dyer's art - yes it's sketchy stuff, but the style, storytelling and page layouts are superb. Thoroughly prog-worthy!

Quote from: dan200 on 09 November, 2023, 06:14:05 PMWhat stories has the character revealed at the end of Dredd been in before? I didn't recognize the name and it's proving ungoogleable!

All we can deduce so far is that they're an ex Titan convict, and therefore probably an ex-judge.
Any chance it could be Sinfield?

Blimey thanks! While not traced, it's very much cleaving to reference, so don't get too excited ;)

Recently read some John Burns interviews where he said illustrators should use reference but not be a slave to it. I would love to have that ability! It requires so much time practicing figure drawing.

I'm sure I read somewhere a few years ago that the Ranson droid was taking photo's of fans at conventions, to use as background characters in his panel work. With their consent of course!

But take that with a pinch of salt - my memory is a bit swiss cheese these days...

Quote from: Blue Cactus on 02 November, 2023, 12:39:37 PMAlways loved Siku, especially his colours. I remember his Dredd winding people up because he really was 95% chin but I thought it was good fun!

Ah yes, the pointy chin!
Gotta give him credit for having the balls to mess with the visual formula, whilst still keeping it clearly Dreed  ;)

It's worth mentioning that as a kid, with my introduction to Dredd being the Titan reprints, I used to internally groan when I saw Ron Smith's work. I really didn't appreciate him at all.

It took a few years of maturing for me to realise just what a master he was, and fully appreciate the Mega-City madness he created with his depictions of the citizens. So much movement on every page, and he *really* knew how to tell a story.

But anyway, back on topic.
Clint Langley. Or to be more precise, the first book of 'Books of Invasion'.
I remember initially hating this new photo-based version of his work, but going back to it now I'm surprised by just how strong it is. The page of Niamh's funeral is up there with the best Slaine pages to ever grace the prog.

Siku.
I remember him getting alot of hate when he did the 'Meatmonger' Dredd story, but I'd love for him to get another crack at the prog.

And David Bircham too (hope I spelled his name right!)
His work on Slaine was good, even if he wasn't really the right artist for it. Seem to remember he did some badly reproduced work on Sin/Dex too?

Anthony Williams for me.
Alas he was rarely given good stuff to draw, but that one-off Tharg strip from a few years ago was superb.

Think that was the last thing he did in the prog?

And another vote for Simon Jacob. Nobody does giant robots and fantasy weirdos like he did.

Bringing this back on topic...

A Colin Macneil Apex edition would be a thing of beauty, especially if we could get the entire first half of 'Song Of The Surfer' in it's original black + white glory!

Appreciate that probably won't happen though.
