Website and Forum / .gifs in posts?
27 November, 2020, 03:59:47 PM
Is it possible to post a .gif on the forum?  I hosted one I made on imgur.com and it works fine but when putting it in a message here and previewing it it didn't seem to show up.

Any ideas?

Help! / GBH (Dead): colour? Help!
14 September, 2018, 03:00:53 PM
Hey folks,

I'm after some pointers or some kind of consensus for what colours to use in my ongoing battle with a Lego GBH (see the 2000AD Lego thread).  Massimo seems to have gone with blue skin and hair in the initial cover (Prog 232) but then he appears with greyish skin and bright orange hair later on (and also purplish skin and grey hair).  It does seem a bit open to interpretation but any suggestions / thoughts would be welcome...

Hey folks, I've read to our two boys (now aged eight and nearly seven) every night since they popped into existence, pretty much, and I'm looking for recommendations of books to add to the list.  Norwegian is their first language but their English isn't far behind, partly due to hours and hours spent reading at bedtime (a pleasure for me, not a chore).  They're old enough to read to themselves (and do) but I'm looking to continue the routine of me reading every evening for a good while yet.  I've read a bunch of beloved books from my childhood as well as more recent stories but any suggestions (old or new) would be very welcome.  Now they're older there's less repetition featured in bedtime reading so I'm hoping to amass a stack of books that we can work our way through.

One book I'm currently trying to track down is Rebecca's World (Terry Nation); I loved that as a kid.  Other stuff we've read in the last year or two includes the following:

The Iron Man - Ted Hughes
King of the Copper Mountains - Paul Biegel
The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkein
Bottersnikes and Gumbles - S.A. Wakefield (three books from the series)
How to Train your Dragon - Cressida Cowell (the whole lot)
Tales from Schwartzgarten - Christopher William Hill (The Woebegone Twins is great)
Roald Dahl - pretty much everything
Noggin the Nog - Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin (a few of these books; hard to resist)
Stig of the Dump - Clive King
Harry Potter - J.K. Rowling (first two books read by Number One Son in Norwegian; Stephen Fry has read us the first four in the car on various long trips)

There are a lot of books in the back of my mind (we watched the 1984 TV adaptation of John Masefield's The Box of Delights at Christmas, so I should pick up the book; The Wind in the Willows and Narnia will also feature at some point.)

So, what are we missing out on?

Help! / Galway bound - Hive-mind recommendations?
22 June, 2017, 10:08:51 AM
Hey all,

I'm off to Galway next week (work-related but I still expect some downtime in which to mooch about) so any suggestions for things to see / do / avoid would be most welcome!

Help! / The Incredibles: dialogue source?
15 February, 2017, 12:54:39 PM
Help me, Hive-Mind, you're my only hope, etc.

Not that long ago the missus and I watched a film and were amazed that the a sizeable chunk of dialogue from one scene was transplanted (obviously as an intentional homage) into the Pixar classic, The Incredibles.  You know that scene where Bob Parr is called into Mr. Huph's office: "You Know, Bob, a Company Is like an enormous clock..." and all that?  That one.

Anyway, despite there having been two of us watching, neither of us can now remember what the original bloody film was.  I thought it might have been the Princess Bride but I'm not sure and now we're starting to think we imagined the whole thing...

Any ideas?

Film & TV / Hong Kong Classics
21 August, 2015, 01:26:57 PM
I know there are various people here with a fondness for the cinematic output of Hong Kong, so this thread is intended for recommendations, clips or whatnot.

This one came to mind today (and made me laugh so much that I had to share it here): The Private Eyes (1976).  It took me a while to track this down on DVD but I managed it in the end, mostly for the kitchen fight scene that starts at the 20:30 mark; if this two minute scene doesn't make you laugh, you're dead inside.

News / The Four Dark Judges... Plus nine more?
11 February, 2014, 08:45:10 AM
I'm not sure what to make of all this...  Everyone loves Judge Death; Fear, Fire and Mortis were great additions, but I didn't even particularly like the Sisters of Death, so nine new Dark Judges seems to be over-egging the pudding somewhat.

General / 2000AD Lego builds
10 February, 2014, 02:44:47 PM
Apologies if there's a thread for stuff like this already but I've had far too much fun with the boys (aged three and nearly five) and Lego lately.

With a limited amount of pieces of any one colour, and very little in the way of hinged or otherwise technical pieces, I'm pretty happy with how these have turned out.  Not sure what to make next, but we'll see...  Anyone else have anything similar to share?

Mek-Quake

Ro-Jaws

Mongrol (A work in progress.  I've since added some legs but competition for bricks in our house is fierce.)

General / 2000AD: Project Sketchbook
16 November, 2013, 04:44:59 PM
I've had a little something in the works for a while now and, although it's far from complete, it's now far enough along that it's now worth sharing with you lovely lot.  A few people here are aware of this to some degree and a number of people have helped out one way or another.

Someone very kindly sent me a couple of the official 2000AD 35th anniversary sketchbooks from SDCC last year and, as I'm living in Norway these days, with young kids and zero chance to get to any conventions any time soon, I decided to try and get these sent out to artists for contributions.

This is a long-term labour of love and entails the books going from artist to artist for a couple of years (at least) before finally coming back to me.  The two books are bouncing around, crossing counties, countries, continents and hemispheres...  It's been great fun and hugely rewarding so far and, if there's one thing I've discovered, it's that 2000AD creators are an incredibly nice and generous bunch, as well as being immeasurably talented and ridiculously modest.

Anyway, I'll share some of the sketches here (I won't dump them all at once and some even I haven't seen yet) and add more as and when they show up.  As I say, this is likely to go on for another year or two before completion.  Varying image quality / size is a result of dependence on artists to send pics or scans of what they or others have done, but I'll scan everything properly when it's all done and dusted.

Are you sitting comfortably?  Then I'll begin...

Hey folks, I'm offering up a few pages of original 2000AD art; Cam Kennedy, Jesus Redondo, Belardinelli, Ian Gibson, Colin Wilson, Steve Dillon, Glenn Fabry, Brendan McCarthy...

No need to panic, I'm not selling up entirely, this is just some long-pondered pruning that will hopefully allow some decent art to find new homes.  All the art is visible on CAF via the links below, so if there's anything you're interested in drop me a line (via CAF or p.m. here) and we can talk turkey.  I can reserve stuff and flexible payment is always an option if it helps.

Anyway, to the art...

All the pages are in a FOR SALE gallery here: http://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=150946

General / 2000AD Sci-Fi Swipe File
30 October, 2013, 06:21:08 PM
While strolling down memory lane today, revisiting those old Terran Trade Authority handbooks and associated artists, a few things surfaced which made me do a bit of a double-take...

I've probably been aware of these er, similarities, on some level for decades but seeing these images for the first time in a long time, just how obvious these swipes are came as a bit of a surprise, and as I spotted these in quick succession I'm sure there are more examples out there.

So, was Tharg aware?  Attentive people might recall I posted previously* about my brother swiping an image from one of the TTA books (then combining it with a background from another) and managing to get Tharg to print it.  First he received £5 and then, after being snitched on by other readers, a Rigellian Hotshot.  The harsh nature of Tharg's reaction suggests a guilty conscience may have been involved... It's somewhat comical that readers and creators alike were swiping from the same sources, anyway.

I'd be interested in seeing any more similar examples if anyone has 'em; if I come across any more I'll post them here.

Right, on to the Street of Shame.

Joe Petagno: cover art was originally used for a 1979 printing of F. Paul Wilson's novel Healer but was also featured in Aliens in Space (Hamlyn, Galactic Encounters series)

The Mophioso: art by Ron Smith

Tim White: cover art used for Robert Silverberg's Those Who Watch (1977 NEL edition)

Captain Skank's Calypso: art by Ron Smith

Tim White again (not certain where this was used but I think it was Omni in 1980)

Alan Davis: Harry Twenty on the Swiped Rock (1982)

Image links have gone dead but here's a new one of Tharg's responses to swiping... "Only a grexnix would attempt to pass off somebody else's work as his own in the pages of my progs."  Indeed, Green Bonce, indeed.  I still can't get over the enthusiasm of those snitching Squaxx... If only they knew.

Classifieds / Wanted: Fantasy Express No. 4
18 July, 2013, 09:53:48 PM
From 1982 (previously Metamorph).  Anyone have a copy of this?  I've got No. 3, with part one of a great Kevin O'Neill interview, but it'd be nice to track down this issue with part two.

Get rummaging, gents!

:)

I've always liked the fact that Jim views original artwork in a slightly different way to many of us who, somewhat understandably, get distracted by all the pretty pictures.  It's nice to see such appreciation for the lettering skills evident on the pages and I'm sure he's not alone in this.  Hence this thread - sod the art, this is just for the lettering!  I'll post up bits and pieces of text - dialogue, sound effects, etc. - from various lettering robots from days gone by, and if anyone else wants to chip is with favourite examples then please feel free!

On to the lettering...

Tom Frame - Judge Dredd - Prog 66

Peter Knight - Black Hawk - Prog 131

Tom Frame - The VCs - Prog 150

Hey folks, I'm thinking of pruning a few pieces from my collection.  Prices are indicated without shipping costs; that shouldn't incur much extra and I'll always round things down where I can.

If you fancy something, just drop me a line.

Ron Smith, The Invisible Man - Prog 135, page 4 - £195
(on Daler art board, approx. 40 x 50cm)

Mick McMahon, Judge Dredd - £150 (exactly what I paid Mick for it last year)
(drawn in pencil and completely fills a sheet of A3 copy paper)

Prog / Subscriber problems?
22 January, 2013, 10:44:59 AM
Hey folks.  Have any subscribers (overseas or otherwise) had an unusual number of missing Progs lately, or is it just me?  I've been subbing for years and no-show Progs have been a rare event, usually one a year or less.  However, the end of last year (and start of this year) has seen an annoying number of AWOL Progs... 1800, 1808, 1811 and now 1814.

It's not a major problem - the lovely Denise fixes things in the blink of an eye - but a minor irritation when I have to put off reading things like Trifecta until missing Progs turn up.  Anyway, I was just curious whether this has been a widespread problem or just a Norwegian postal glitch...

General / Kevin O'Neill - Mek Memoirs (1976)
07 September, 2012, 02:04:15 PM
Stalwart 2000AD fan and all-round good egg that he is, DJ Food posted on his blog yesterday about Kev O'Neill's self-published Mek Memoirs (1976), scripted by Jack Adrian.

http://www.djfood.org/djfood/2000ad-week-4-kevin-oneill-mek-memoirs-fanzine-1976

Having had a quick look, I know Lew Stringer wrote about this a few years back (http://lewstringer.blogspot.no/2009/02/kevin-oneill-early-days.html) and it really looks like an incredible bit of early O'Neill genius.  The blog post above was prompted partly by a copy popping up on eBay and selling for £50+; it's a shame I didn't know about it earlier as I would have done my best to win it, scan it and stick it up here for the enjoyment of all...

Anyway, I know it's unlikely but I figured that some branch of the Hive-mind might have access to a copy.  It would be extremely nice to see this in it's entirety, so...  Any clues?

Suggestions / 2000AD Art Portfolios
31 August, 2012, 01:02:49 PM
The following suggestion is partly a consequence of looking at some of the old Titan books covers recently (and knowing that the original art for one of McMahon's just popped up and £10k+ was offered for it very quickly)...

How about portfolios containing some classic covers (Prog or otherwise)?

If good enough reproduction could be arranged, these could be fairly high-end, limited edition affairs and could focus on a selection of classic Titan or Prog covers.  If there was scope for a series of portfolios, they could be arranged thematically, covering different periods of 2000AD history, or characters, artists, etc.  Plenty of possibilities for putting some interesting collections of images together.

To be honest, I'm unsure what has been previously released along these lines, so maybe I'm just being dim.  Anyway, given the ever-rising prices associated with original art, and the scarcity, it might be an opportunity to get more Thrill Power on walls...

General / New Dredd cover art?
27 August, 2012, 01:57:30 PM
Apologies if this is old news (and if it is, please just merge or delete this as appropriate).

Anyway, just noticed this cover by Nick Runge on CAF; anyone know more about it?  Marked as a 'retailer incentive' cover, so I assumed it might be connected with the IDW gig.

'After Jock'...
