Meshuggah get so many recommendations it's untrue but I've only just got round to hearing them today on a track called Demiurge. I don't know whether I'd wimp out if their whole album sounded like that all the way through. Can you recommend anything in particular by them that demonstrates the kind of diversity fans go on about?

How was the gig BTW?

Fight Like Apes - Let's Pull Off Your Arms and Play in Your Blood

This is a great wee band from Ireland who by rights be a lot more popular than they are. I recommend checking them out (http://www.fightlikeapesmusic.com/)
Check out my new comic Supermom: Expecting Trouble and see how a pregnant superhero tries to deal with the fact that the baby's father is her archnemesis. Free preview pack including 12 pages of art: http://www.mediafire.com/file/57986rnlgk0itfz/Supermom_Preview_Pack.pdf/file

I'd say either the new one (Koloss) or obZen (last album) might be a good place to start. The whole album's either pretty similar to Demiurge, or faster, or a bit catchier I'd say. Whole albums can be kind of difficult to get through, it's not very good as background music. Destroy Erase Improve is probably their easiest on the ear (2nd album) and isn't far off say, Master of Puppets, which it sounds a bit like at times. For a challenge, try Catch 33, which is kind of a single song all the way through.

As for the gig, it was just... *shakes head and closes eyes trying to think of a word* ...stunning. Pretty small place, so was perfect for a really intense atmosphere. Pretty lengthy gig too (17 songs on the setlist inc. encore).

A whirl through youtube with that list should do fine though. Quite a few will have videos, especially Rational Gaze (from Nothing), Bleed (from obZen) and Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion (from Koloss, new one). So in fact, those 3 tunes are a good place to start.

As well as Meshuggah being arsom, Animals as Leaders were also amazing. 2 incredible guitarists on 8-strings and a crazy drummer (sadly not the original as he just left, so to come into the band as he has is incredible). Fairly Meshuggah inspired stuff as well as being very jazzy/proggy in a Frank Zappa way, if that makes sense. I think I posted a link a couple of pages back. they're doing a headline gig in Glasgow in October, so will be going to that for sure. Here we go...

Anyone looking for good stoner go no further than this MixCloud thing http://www.mixcloud.com/BeyondTheWallOfSleep/ the dude behind it is rooting out the heaviest of it - some of it is bloody magical - his latest one is a special on Desertfest. The next time there is a desert fest I WILL BE THERE.

My ear's exploded whith joy :) awesome link
loveforstitch - Does he fall in love? I like a little romance in all my movies.

Rekaert - Yes, he demonstrates it with bullets, punches and sentencing.

He's Mega City 1's own Don Juan.

Greg M.

Can't go wrong with any set-list that includes a spot of vintage Pentagram.

HOO-HAA

Sedulus. Excellent doom band from London. Well worth checking out.

Mudcrab

Still to check out those lists properly, though certainly a few familiar names in there. This thread makes me spend money!

Meanwhile, listening to Death Grips, new hip hop band that's strangely (or not) kicking off the ATP thing next month (Slayer, Sleep, Melvins, Yob, WITTR). Strange for such a doom-laden lineup but it's certainly dark enough and if they kick it up a notch live like say PE, it should be arsom...

Carly Rae Jepsen.

Every time I turn on a music channel, everytime I listen to the radio in the car (try flipping stations, I guarantee it'll be on everything but Radio Four), and over the PA at work.

Every hour of my life, through every possible avenue, the world is (vainly) trying to convince me that Carly Rae-fucking-Jepsen and her breezy chipmunk positivity are good.

Carly Rae Jepsen.

I'm just impressed that you can distinguish her from every other bland one-note singer out there.  That's a good ear going to waste.

Mudcrab

Luckily I don't know who that is, sounds horrible  :)

Nothing on the radio ever reaches my ear drums, never listen to it at home unless it's the football, never listen to anything other than CDs in the car and mp3s at work. If I do listen to it in the car, it's Classic FM  between CDs, which always really confuses people :D

I always scream in panic when I get my car back from a service cos some ned's changed it to radio feckin 1.

Nope, just not part of my culture at all, I even prefer my horrible screeching alarm instead of anything like that for waking up. Classic FM would be fine to wake up to if it wasn't for adverts and annoying posh people. I really don't understand people that have it on at all.

Oh, one time my ears are invaded is if I succumb to laziness and go to the local Co-op. Then I get Co-op radio, which seriously makes me want to kill someone, especially some cloned Essex bint with that same fucking horrible voice they've all got! Grrrr, hate hate hate radio, allowing yourself to listen to it is like sitting watching Saturday night TV game/talent/reality shows for fuck sake

Right, I'm off home, CD currently in the car is Animal by Animosity so that's what I'll be listening to  :D

Absolutely awesome. Well worth checking out next year, if you're in the vicinity. We'd like to do the whole weekend next time, if possible.

Couple of tips for you...

UNDERSMILE - cutsey girlies with harmonising voices of stoner doom! Caught their acoustic set at DF and it blew us away.

ANCIENT VVISDOM - acoustic-driven folk/ doom of the devil! Caught them last night in Bristol and it was a storming gig. Really great stuff.

Mudcrab

Cool, will definitely keep it in mind for next year. Definitely want to get to Roadburn next year too though, only a week apart this year.

Will check those out, seen Ancient VVisdom mentioned quite a lot.

Did you catch The Samsara Blues Experiment or was that on a day you missed?
