John has painted close to 400 pages of Dredd strip, excluding the first two parts of The Exterminator which was finished by Frejo.

Makes you pine for the good old Egmont days, when no one worried about what the comic would be called in the year 2000, because no one* expected it to make it that far...

*No one in the business, certainly.

Oh ye of little faith! We were getting the GGC to the year 2000 no matter what.

Apparently, it was a nightmare to photograph back in the day. Does anyone know where the original art is, or whether it's still intact? (I remember one story about bits falling off of it.)

It was indeed a nightmare to repro. The very large physical art had different layers which were intensely problematic to photograph accurately. With modern technology it might be possible to construct a digital collage from multiple photos to properly capture each element. The art was least 1.5 up, and I've a feeling some pages might have been twice up (Sean's art on Armitage was certainly twice up).

IIRC there is at least a page or two (or more) that Simon Bisley painted S/S - same size as the published comic - to save time. Think they're in Book 3 when he was up against it on deadline. The page(s) feature Ukko pausing in between writing his account, and are evident because the lettering suddenly gets bigger. Nobody told the poor letterer (Steve Potter?) to shrink his balloons or the next within them...

Wonder how they'll deal with that in the mighty tome?

Quote from: Max Headroom on 20 July, 2023, 07:38:19 PMIt looks from the contents that the upcoming 'Fiends of the Eastern Front' volume will only feature four stories compared with the Hachette Ultimate Collection version's five. The story 'Fiends of the Western Front' (Progs 2111-2115) is not listed as appearing. This is disappointing, as I would have at the very least expected it to match the Hachette book, if not offer more. Can anyone confirm that it will definitely be missing the aforementioned story?

I note the cover for the forthcoming Fiends collection now states VOLUME ONE on the front, suggesting there could be a second volume if enough further tales accumulate...

ISTR Dry Run has not the greatest ending; don't they just ride off a cliff or something?

Vanguard was meant to the first book of at least two, but I stopped editing 2000AD and Andy opted not to commission more - a new editor's perogative!

Seems I am fast coming up on my 21st anniversary of lurking. 18th February 2002 was when I first decloaked.

ISTR being present for the conversation with the shop staff where the Bowie comment arose. The JoG queue was massive. It might even have gone round the block at one stage.

it makes me very happy and i am sure it'll make the bish-op droid very happy too hes wanted the original vol 1 middenface strip back in print for ages

It does! Have known this was coming for a while [and about the 141-180 extension] because I get interviewed occasionaly about relevant strips for the back matter. Al's Baby might not be the only creator-owned strip getting a collection from Hachette...
