Excellent news.
It would be good to see more of the "lesser" known characters/ stories picked up to open up the tooth world to a new audience and show what a varied catalogue there is to explore.

Great news! I see that Button Man will be a Netflix Movie, but I think a series (in the vein of the Punisher etc.) would also work well. Hopefully there will be three movies, one for each book. Looking forward to this!

Splendid news. Rutger Hauer for Harry and Frank Bruno for Carl please.

Hope they don't tinker too much - books practically storyboard the film for them. That said I hope they don't go for a literal adaptation, that would be dull.

Hard to please loyal.

Fantastic. One of my favourite stories in all the years I've read 2000AD, and the final few panels of the first series will make a hell of a season ender / cliffhanger!

Really looking forward to seeing this come together.

Maybe Netflix have other 2000AD properties under consideration!

What was the last recent Rutger Hauer film you saw?  Dude's in his mid-70s.

Hobo with a shotgun - he's still got it :) Captain Marvel shows that you can do the de-aging thing with CG :P

You be sure and let us know when they cast a 75 year-old actor in the role, and use expensive - and probably dodgy - cgi to de-age him 30 years, instead of using an age-appropriate actor who still has a career and might actually bring an audience to the thing.

Hobo With a Shotgun is already 8 years old, and he was in his 60s. More importantly, the character he was playing in that film was supposed to be in his 60s, so Hauer was the right age. Harry Exton was in his 30s when we met him, so why would anyone cast a 75 year old?

I take it no one has a problem with our Buttonman's deeply sincere request for Frank Bruno as Carl.

Even Sean Bean is a bit long in the tooth to be Harry by now.  I find myself agreeing with lots of the choices here, then realising they would have been the right person for the job 25 years ago.

But Frank Bruno: well, what other choice is there?

Will it be a British actor or an American one? Brian Helgeland might opt for a recognised American actor on which to base his vision of Harry Exton. I hope not, but we don't know what plans he has for his version of the character or whose even interested in playing it. I don't want to be too much of a killjoy, but you have to consider it with the cold eye of commerce. Would an American actor sell it better to a worldwide audience than a British or Irish one? Jack O Connell would be goods if a little young for my pick.

My money's on an American Harry, though I'd prefer a Brit one.  Obviously a younger Mel Gibson with his hair bleached would look the part, if he had the right accent and wasn't such an appalling shitehound.

Does Rebellion have anything to do with this? It would be another great film they could make at their new studios. Or do they no longer own the rights to Button Man? I seem to remember that there has been a long running dispute over ownership of the rights to this character and that's why this film wasn't made a long time ago.

Where did you hear that? It's creator-owned by Wagner/Ranson — it's been optioned by various producers/studios for years and it's just completely ordinary Hollywood uselessness that explains the fact it hasn't got made before now. Wagner used to refer to the regularity with which the option would lapse and get renewed as his pension scheme.

AFAIK there was never a dispute over the rights to Button Man and the film-rights were sold by John and Arthur to Dreamworks over a decade ago. Rebellion did and maybe still do have book publication rights to Button Man but it has always been a creator owned comic so this current deal with Netflix would've gone through the creators John Wagner & Arthur Ranson and whomever currently owns the option for the film rights.

That doesn't mean they can't hire the use of Rebelion studios if it suits their purpose.

The current rights holders are Matt Reeves's production company 6th & Idaho who have a distribution deal with Netflix.

Well that clears that up then  :)

Thanks guys, oh and I'm really looking forward to this, Button Man is my third favourite all time 2000AD strip, right after Nikolai Dante and Judge Dredd.

Well, Matt Reeves is a very talented man those Planets of the Apes films are excellent. He's Filming the next Batman movie, and we all know which 2000AD character Batman met, so you never know. But seriously its looking very good for Button Man. Let's hope other Producers, writers and Directors see something worth pursuing in the 2000AD Universe. Hey, 2000ADMU sounds fine to me. ;)

Happy to know that Reeves is involved in some capacity. The rebooted POTAs movies were excellent.

I'd love to see Nicolaj Coster-Waldau cast as Harry! Excellent in Shot Caller, and pretty much anything I've seen him in.

Great idea.   I've only seen him in GoT but as a somewhat posh, blond, handsome psychopath, he doesn't have far to jump from Jaime to Harry.

I chatted briefly to John Wagner about Buttonman at Lawless.

"Congratulations on the Buttonman Netflix show!" I said in my ridiculous Sunderland accent.
"Thanks Pete!" He relied!
"Ah think Harry should be played by Sean Bean, like!" was my Mackem retort.
"Fuck off!" He roared "Too fucking Northern!"

Get Seans Bean and Pertwee both as rival buttons, and we could have some seriously gruesome deaths to enjoy. Not that I'm advocating Paul W S Anderson for director. Neil Marshall, on the other hand...

Neil Marshall would be an excellent choice for Director.

Failing that, we could give Alex Garland the job.

I was looking through a list of British Actors, and since Harry strikes me as an older man, Iain Glen of GoT Fame's face leered out at me. I doubt a stone-cold killer would interest him, but you never know.

And if Matt Reeves is still involved, I wouldn't mind seeing Iain Glen playing Alfred in his Batman movie.

Didn't think Harry was any older than early 30s in the first series, but I'd be happy with Iain Glen too.

I remember Tharg's choice, back in the day, being Rutger Hauer.  What might have been.

The film's being directed by Brian Helgeland (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001338/?ref_=tt_ov_dr#director). He made Payback and A Knight's Tale; his most recent movies were respectable period biopics, 42 and Legend. I sort of quite like all his films*, so I expect I'll sort of quite like Button Man when it appears next to the Liam Neeson flicks and Triple Frontier on Netflix.

Helgeland uses the same actors on different projects. If you get lucky, that might mean Tom Hardy as Harry Exton in a UK-based production. If things don't go to plan, you might get Mel Gibson or Jake Gyllenhaal doing accents or using the US setting of the second book to tell the story of the first book.

* Except for The Sin Eater/The Order (https://youtu.be/-EKjxTIRRtc), a Heath Ledger film I'd never heard of until now.

I'm getting carried away here. I was watching Black Sails with Toby Stephens-guess, which 2000AD property floated into my head. Again, more than likely he'd be doing the Lost in Space show rather than an unfamiliar character. As Frank states, an American 'star' might be more suitable, in the Producers mind for the role. I prefer a Brit or an Irish Actor, but if the decision is else wise, that's their decision.

Does anyone know where you can hire hitmen by the hour?  :P :)
