Howdy folks. Fresh from my success with making my own Gronk and Sensitive Klegg, I looked at my leftover wire and clay, and wondered if I had enough for another figure.
I played with the wire and found I could do a basic humanoid figure, so decided to go ahead with one of my ideas for another project - Don Uggie Apelino.
I bloody love Don Uggie, partly 'cos I have a thing about apes and monkeys already. I was particularly pleased to see him reappear in the recent Dredd/Mars Attack.
However, it is this rendition I'm aiming for:

You may have seen a bit of the process on my FB page already, but I'll go back to the start.
So here goes - wire frame Uggie!

Well I never hide my love of the ape, so I reckon you know I'm pleased about this one. Can't wait.

I'm going to hazard a guess that's from the Games Workshop RPG, but I'm outside keeping an eye on the BBQ so can't pop in and check...
That's a first world problem, right?
That is from the RPG, but I believe it's a panel pinched from Prog 39 (Monkey Business? The Ape Gang? Something like that), though may need someone else to confirm that?
Anyway, filling the wire frame with foil:

First layer of skin:

Working in some basic detail:

Looking a bit more recognisable:

One or two adjustments then he's going in the oven. I had to use a large safety pin for the finer detail.

He's out of the oven. As you can see, he's a bit smaller than Gronk and SK.

That's fantastic.
Thanks Richmond! I'm quite pleased with him, particularly getting in the detail with the safety pin.
I may have time to add a lick of paint at some point this week, but in the meantime here he is with my other guys.

Seems about the right size to me, comapred to the Klegg - Don Uggie's relatively small as the members of the Ape Gang go. He sure ain't no Joe Bananas.
The scale was a happy accident really, due to lack of wire and clay.
Wow - came back from work to this! You're a fast worker SM - beautiful job!
Cheers CFM!
Painting this guy Ida massive pain in the arse - so fiddly!

These are great but I'm a bit suspicious as to how they are being made so quickly. Shaker Maker?
wow that takes me back! They were shit weren't they? Mine all came out as rounded lumps, with all the pointy details left behind in the mould.
Loving Don Uggie, we need to have a whip round to keep you permanently supplied with sculpty and wire
Working into it...

Don Uggie joins my other models.

Nice, nice, nice! You've a definite talent for this, SM!
'Owzabout that then?! :) :o
Cheers all. I'll do a proper write-up of it on ECBT at some point.
Do you take requests.. Stuff I'd like to see, not stuff I want for myself, mind you.
Excellent work again. Out of interest, how long does something like this take you? Was this thread in realtime?

I posted the process on FB first, saw if anyone was interested, then posted the process here afterwards. ]
Here are the exact timings of his creation using FB as a guide, if you're interested:
Started building wireframe Saturday 16.24. Completely modelled and cooked by 18.45 same day.
Painting started last night at 20.35, finished 23.21.
So about 2 hours 30 mins modelling, and 2 hours 45 mins painting.

Happy to consider suggestions and ideas, but no promises! ;)
Blimey. I just automatically assume something like this would take days. Chapeau!
Only just saw these, nice job man!
Don Uggie looks fantastic, you really do have a talent for this. In keeping with the minor characters so far, how about a Grobbendonk..?
Thanks for all your kind words folks - I remain surprised at how appreciated these models are, given the general level of talent on this forum!

Uggie was very quick, as he was so small. It really suited my OCD streak - I start projects, and my brain burns with it until they're completed. I have to work on it NOW NOW NOW. However, if I have to leave it a few days or a week, the burn disappears, sometimes leaving projects unfinished forever. So the combo of creative brain burn and the knowledge it won't get finished if I put it to one side really speeds me up.
That almost happened with Sensitive Klegg - he took a good evening to sort the wireframe, foil filling, and first skin, then I had to put him aside to tend to other matters - sleep, food, work, family etc etc. You know, all those things that just get in the way. ;) Thankfully I found myself with a free day, the burn came back, and I completed the modelling and cooking.
Then I had to put him aside again, but the burn thankfully remained over a few days, and at the first available opportunity I painted him. That was six hours of solid painting with just one break for a cuppa, and one for a wee. I was hunched over the kitchen table painting for so long that the following day my back was bloody killing me. Such is the nature of these creative urges when they take me.
Quotehow about a Grobbendonk..?
He's definitely in my list of possibilities. I'm going away for a few days shortly, so will be considering my next move then. I definitely want to be doing SOMETHING again though. I haven't been this creative in over two decades, and I want to keep it going - it's very satisfying.

Well, if you ever do find a big project interrupted, make sure you post your progress to date here. Coz then we'll bully you into finishing it until it's completed :-)
Cheers - that might be the toe up my arse I need! :D
Here you go folks. A bit of an introspective one this time. Apologies in advance for my pretentious ramblings. :D

Wow... great work Shaolin! :) :)
