Title: Upcoming Gigs
Post by: CrazyFoxMachine on 23 April, 2014, 11:28:31 PM
Surely now there needs to be a thread for upcoming gigs - !

Might not be relevant areawise for everyone but it might perk yer ears up to bands that are touring  -

Here are mine - all Bristol stuff:

April 26th: Turbowolf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvnEtfYr_eI)

Incredibly catchy n' heavy trend-riders (who are also locals!!) playing this weekend at the legendary Fleece. Promising to be QUITE MENTAL and will break my dry gig streak quite brilliantly I reckonnn

May 1st: Noise Annoys (https://www.facebook.com/noiseannoysbristol)

Inaugral night of new noise-rock-based night in Bristol wot I designed the poster for. Featuring 'Langur, Nascar & Fires' - all sounds gloriously heavyhipsterlicious and for £4 is wallet-tacular.

May 2nd: Temples Festival (http://www.templesfestival.co.uk/lineup)

Likely can't afford this but a new heavy heavy festival in Brizzle with lovely bands like Electric Wizard, Neurosis, Clutch, Blood Ceremony, Conan, Gonga et etc

May 7th: BADBADNOTGOOD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_rp80qevsI)

Hideously young 'instrumental hip-hop' (i.e. = jazz) group who are known as the backing band for the slightly dicky Tyler the Creator. Amazing trio doing something that's quite interesting. Saw them at Glasto last year and found it to be most good.

May 8th: Bo Ningen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fimXT68YI4E)

Awesome noisy psych Japanese group who get lost in forests of fuzz. First saw them freaking out supporting my favourite recent(ish) group Chrome Hoof - love them to pieces.

May 16th: Jeff Beck (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ndyILodYwM)

Definitely won't be able to afford this but it'll likely be an amazing show - I never have seen the guitar god live but I love him to pieces. Also this is the day before my birthday. Maybe Geoffery has a Jeff-Beck-ticket shaped surprise for me? Unlikely though as they're quite a lot! :S

May 22nd: Electric Eel Shock (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlu4g1DKUeo)

Cult noisy metallic punk hard rock trio whose pronunciation is as loose as their energetic performances. Tickets for this are only £8 so this seems more in my range! :D

May 28th: Swans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs6m9HeWXck)

I'm a newbie to Swans but I was hugely taken with their ridiculously diverse recent album The Seer - anything that noisy n' bewildering is right up my alley. Live they look hugely intense also - so again - probably not within the O-price bracket but likely an unforgettable experience.

June 1st: 'Til Death Doom Us Part (https://www.facebook.com/TillDeathDoomUsPart?fref=ts)

Worth attending for the pun alone - a death/doom all-dayer in Stokes Croft. I'm very fond of the ol' Doom and me mates Baron Greenback (a very good stonery doom group) are playing so.... could be doable!

June 25th-29th: Glastonbury Festival

Always do this as I used to be a local and I love it to pieces. Line-up varies but Wilko Johnson, Seun Kuti's Egypt 80, Jack White, Robert Plant, The Sun Ra Arkestra, Rodrigo y Gebriela leap out at me from their first poster but there are likely to be some gems in there (especially on the mysterious small stages) it's not all NMEsters and pop acts ;) My blog of last year shows what manner of good variety you can root out of this most enormous of modern festivals (http://crazyfoxmachine.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/glastonbury-etc.html).

July 30th: Easy Star All Stars (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPT0zb82U5k)

Not usually a fan of the ol' dub but the group's inventive interpretations of Floyd, The Beatles etc make them an interesting live act. I had a few particularly transcendent encounters with them at Glasto a few years back - and I've been meaning to see them again.

August 26th: Karma to Burn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewPcHUxvsYQ)

The first stoner band I ever saw live way back when - I've got a lot of love for the largely-instrumental riffy trio - and they are phenomenally engaging live. Fully intend to see this.

October 24th: GONG (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U4XZm-_E7U)

Eccentric is an overused word really but that is the only way you can describe psychedelic psychotic 70s space pixies and radio gnome-chasers Gong. Saw them in Bristol last year at an empty-and-therefore-slightly staid 02 academy but at the smaller Fleece I expect a bit more liveliness. If not a crusty or two having an acid flashback. MARVELLOUS.

October 26th: John Mayall (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IeDN08OiCY)

The 80-year-old king of British Blues is rolling around at the end of the year and I've been dying to see him in his live element for aaaagges. If the above video is anything to go by he can still kick it out a little- it'll be well worth seeing I reckon.

So that's it for now - whaddya you got?

w...wait, where did my evening go.

I've failed to see Bo Ningen on a couple of occasions and what's this I see? I'm in Glasgow next week and they're playing there the week after!

I've been to the last couple of Swans tours and it's an exhilirating proposition. It's not just played louder, they really are setting out to create something which uses the acoustic properties and physical pressure of intense volume as an intrinsic part of the music. Sounds wanky; feels amazing.

Nothing much coming up for me at the moment although maybe going to this festival in Lyon next month: Nuit Sonores (http://www.nuits-sonores.com/en/). Fuck Buttons, Shed, Wooden Shjips and Kraftwerk would be the highlights.

Christ this is making me feel old! I remember when I'd have had a list as long as CFM's but I've not been to a gig yet this year and only went to about three (I think) last.

I did try to pull off getting to End of the Road this year, with Flaming Lips, Sweet Baboo, Yo La Tango, Steve Malkmaus (and at one stage we thought Deerhoof and Jeffrey Lewis but that was misinformation) playing I'd have been in hog heaven... alas other commitments intervened... and so it goes.

Think that's bad?  I genuinely can't remember what the last gig I was at was, but I think it may have been The Pogues, which is more than a few years ago now.  Certainly nothing since my youngest was born.  Bloody hell.

I'm off to see an all dayer headed by Iron Maiden this June. The main draw was my faves Opeth, who are relegated to third position before a band I've never heard of called Alter Bridge.

I know next to nothing about the Irons' music bar the songs most people know but I guess these are the ones they'll play since they're the most popular. I hoping they'll have the stageshow and enormous Eddie puppet they had in their heyday.

Does anyone here have the recent first hand experience to tell me whether Bruce Dickinson has still got the vocal dexterity he once possessed?

Last saw 'em live about three years ago, so I don't suppose it's that recent, but Bruce's voice was as good as its ever been - a little deeper, inevitably, but I'd say he's actually a better singer now than he was in the 80s (and I loved him in the 80s.)

I've only got tickets for two upcoming gigs, both in Leeds, but I'm really looking forward to both.

White Denim - One of the best new bands of recent years touring their latest album Corsicana Lemonade. Slurp! Now for lovely musicianship!

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - BLUES EXPLOSION! BLUES EXPLOSION! BLUES EXPLOSION! YYEEEEEAAAH! THAHNYUVERRMUCH! One of my favourite bands of all time and I've seen them about 7 times over the years. They're probably the best live band I've seen for energy and pure rock and roll.

Went to see the absolutely awesome The Stranglers at Manchester Arena a few weeks ago...
Just awesome, extremely loud, very, very tight band , played all the favourites and just amazing !!

If you can catch them next time they are playing locally,  you won't be disappointed !!
Cheers

One of the most terrifying nights of my life was spend trying to get to a JSB Explosion gig. Long story short me and four friends travelling over Snake Pass between Sheffield and Manchester in some hammering rain in a car with no windscreen wipes.

When we eventually got to the venue we reckoned we catch the encore to be told it was finished as they'd started a bit early. WHO THE HELL HAS HEARD OF A ROCK AND ROLL BAND STARTING EARLY!

Bad news Colin. I don't want to rub it in but you probably missed a blinder of a gig.

CFM - I LOVE Gong. Love, love, love them. I'm gutted that I missed the recent reunion tour with Steve Hillage. Which line-up will be playing at the gig you're off to?

I met Daevid Allen once and he was lovely. He indulged my fanboy fawning and even drew me a Pot-Head Pixie.

Decent band. I went to one of their gigs a couple of years ago.
Would've loved to have seen them play in Sister Ray records back in 2008.

Only managed going to one concert last year. None so far in 2014.

Noted about White Denim and Jon Spencer, I've stuck 'em on my listen list - as they both sound interesting!

According to Planet Gong its going to be "Daevid Allen along with Cardiacs guitarist Kavus Torabi, 21st Century asteroid guitar man Fabio Golfetti, virtuoso hornyman Ian East 'wind' on saxoflutes, plus sinuous bassist and sonic manipulator Dave Sturt trading sparks with flamedog drummer Orlando Allen."

About the same line-up I saw them with last time around - but Kavus Torabi is a new one - and an amazing one at that - he used to play with the phenomenal Chrome Hoof who are one of my favourite bands of all time. Also they had the legendary Gilli Smyth as well - but she was looking very frail and had to be helped on and offstage.

Bonus fact: We saw Daevid and Gilli eating in the Hatchet before the show but nerves and the fact that it'd be super rude to interrupt their meal got in the way

Oh I know - that's why we risked the high windy road crossing when we knew there was a high risk of rain (well we were going to Manchester) in a windscreen wiper free car.

Love a bit of live JSB Explosion.

Well jealous of that Soundgarden/Faith No More doubler! Can't make it along, but saw FNM on the last reunion tour and they were absolutely blinding, totally on fire.

Got Nine Inch Nails and Mogwai gigs both this month so very excited. Both bands are always pretty amazing live.

The Mogwai show is in Canada and just happened to be on while we're on holiday over there so figured why not! The irony of travelling from Glasgow to Canada and going to see a Glasgow band while we're there feels pretty good.

Hi new to the forum hence only just seen your post , last saw Maiden about 4 years ago (and to be fair I'm not madly keen on them ) but as said if anything Dickinsens voice improves with age and they put on a cracking show, Opeth well one of my favourites too cant go wrong with them  , Alter Bridge are pretty good lead guitarist /vocalist sings with Slashs touring band . Am seeing Maiden again at Sonisphere Knebworth in July , always a good festival .

Sounds like it will be good then. Just need the weather to hold out till next weekend.

After that, in July, Echo and the Bunnymen will be playing a free gig where I live. Here is another legendary band from the 80s of which I know only one original song, Killing Moon, and their contribution to the Lost Boys OST, People Are Strange. But it's free, so it be be remiss not to go.

It is the summer of legendary old men.

It's not quite as varied as that, I'm going to the third day of Rock in Idro in Bologna's charmingly named Joe Strummer Arena. Most of the other bands are washed up 80s thrash acts and Christian metal.

Nice one. I was at work late last night and almost couldn't be arsed getting the train to see EMA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLHAe46_1Uk). Glad I dragged myself through as it was a good gig in a really smart little place.

In upcoming gig news, it's taken him very nearly a year but Billy Bragg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgwU4zCEJtY) is finally coming to just over the border in Germany in July.

Hopefully some raucous fun at Cloud Nothings next Friday, Richie Hawtin in three weeks and possibly Dillinger Escape Plan too.

Tomorrow is the day of the mighty Soundgarden (supported by Wolfmother), a band slightly cheapened by the activities of their singer in the last few years but I'm still looking forward to it. Hope they do Jesus Christ Pose.

Jealous of your Soundgarden opportunity, isn't that the same bill as Faith No More? Amazing.

Just got tickets for the first day of this (didn't really fancy the whole weekend as it's pretty much entirely my Mogwai obsession that's got me going, mind you Fuck Buttons will be grand too) -

Really think I might end up back in Glasgow that weekend Keef.

I've seen Holy Mountain a couple of times and they know how to hold a doomy groove for ten minutes if they need to; been loving  Young Father's new album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7UmjvbmHQM); is it really Swervedriver?; can take or leave the Wedding Present but they were great the last time I saw them; James Holden is vastly underrated; first time I saw Fuck Buttons was supporting Mogwai at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh a few years ago and I initially assumed they were a similarly instrumented guitar band: I still think that Bright Tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMRhTMLHBLU) is the closest anyone's ever got to expressing the mix of drum machines and noise in my heart; Mogwai are Mogwai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSR2dC6fOLQ).

May end up going to the tweeest festival there ever has been: Indietracks (http://www.indietracks.co.uk/). Some friends are playing at it and some other friends are going and it's halfway between everywhere and there's probably enough decent stuff to make it worth the money.

first time I saw Fuck Buttons was supporting Mogwai at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh a few years ago and I initially assumed they were a similarly instrumented guitar band: I still think that Bright Tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMRhTMLHBLU) is the closest anyone's ever got to expressing the mix of drum machines and noise in my heart; Mogwai are Mogwai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSR2dC6fOLQ).

Ah I was at that Corn Exchange gig too, but only caught the last few minutes of Fuck Buttons, when they seemed to be winding down (or up - it was a bit of a noise crescendo). Only recently got round to checking out an album and I'm right on board now.

Hadn't seen that Mogwai Fear Satan performance and it's a particularly good one! Watched their Glastonbury set on iplayer and that track sounded incredible. Took my girlfriend to see them on our Canada trip recently, she wasn't familiar with their stuff at all so when that song exploded she got the fright of her life. Even knowing what to expect (and when - the patented Braithwaite nod always gives it away) it still blows my mind.

No, they were just doing the one date in Verona with Wolfmother. They were brilliant but I was disappointed to find out today the drummer wasn't actually Matt Cameron but a stand-in (I couldn't see him from where I was standing). It's my problem I guess because the drumming that night was excellent but it doesn't feel like I've seen the full group because Matt's sound is so integral to the songwriting.

Another reason to dislike Pearl Jam, since he was doing promo activities for them.

Ah yeah, I wondered how they would deal with Pearl Jam/Soundgarden clashes now both bands are touring. Weirdly I think the guy playing for Soundgarden now is actually the old Pearl Jam drummer. That Seattle scene is so musically incestuous!

Last Saturday, I saw The Dowling Poole play an intimate gig to about thirty people in the room above the Fox and Newt in Leeds. Spent an hour or so afterwards chatting to a variety of (to me, at least) bona fide rock stars in the most relaxed and friendly atmosphere you could imagine.

Then on Tuesday, I drove back up to Leeds and watched Pearl Jam play a three and a half hour slot in front of a packed-out Leeds Arena. Absolutely brilliant - although Eddie did get a bit pissed and fall on his arse... :)

I have to catch an early flight next Thursday, but Bardo Pond (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Al22i8N9k4) are playing a mere 100 miles away on the Wednesday night. There's a fair chance I'd miss either the last train home or half their set but it's the closest they've ever been since I've been aware of them. Hmm.

So, out of interest, how were these gigs which were upcoming?
Quote from: The Cosh on 29 May, 2014, 04:38:01 PM
In upcoming gig news, it's taken him very nearly a year but Billy Bragg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgwU4zCEJtY) is finally coming to just over the border in Germany in July.

Hopefully some raucous fun at Cloud Nothings next Friday, Richie Hawtin in three weeks and possibly Dillinger Escape Plan too.
Billy Bragg was as great live as ever. He managed to speak slowly enough to get his political points across but lost most of the crowd during a hilarious diversion about Kraftwerk being the spiritual heirs of Woody Guthrie.

Cloud Nothings were great too. Proper, heads down thrashing away with no time for chat between songs in an authentic, sweaty cellar bar while it was already 30 degrees outside.

Didn't make the others.
Title: Re: Upcoming Gigs
Post by: Colin YNWA on 11 September, 2014, 08:42:15 AM
Ah Billy Bragg live is a delight. Some friends who for whatever reason used to be my Billy Bragg gig partners used to throw their pants at him as at one gig many moons ago he complained he wasn't the sort of artist people throw their knickers at.

As you might image he found that an amusing distraction.

Got a few to look forward to over the next month or so.

Going to be back in Glasgow at the start of the month for the Simple Things (http://simplethingsfestival.co.uk/glasgow/) festival. The Bristol leg maybe has the slightly bigger names at the top of the bill, but the chance to see Chris Clark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5yfFKqugZU) and Autechre (http://youtu.be/EZFmZ0gZNZI) should make for some interesting dancing.

A friend bought me a ticket to St Vincent's tour with David Byrne last year. In the end, I couldn't go and she's never really forgiven me when people who did were banging on about the best gig they've ever seen. Shall be seeing the lady Godpleton once described as someone you'd like to invite for brunch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na7MC0Ff0hE) in a rather smaller venue this time around.

Read this article about Einsturzende Neubauten's intimidating new show (http://www.neubauten.org/lament) which makes it sound pretty intriguing but it's a long way to go to be banged at.

In a month, it's Bern for the St Ghetto (http://saintghetto.blogspot.ch/) festival. Never spent any time in the city before, so Ben Frost (//http://) and shouty local boy Sudden Infant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8_BYo9PUUQ) seem as good a reason as any.

Just to report that the Fields of the Nephilim were in fine form on Saturday night, with McCoy clearly enjoying himself (!) and fine renditions of most of the classics. Talk earlier this year of a new album gains some momentum with the addition of a previously unheard instrumental and a brand new song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9kbZj0U66I&feature=youtu.be&t=1m45s) to the running order.

I've been seeing this band whenever practical since 1988 and Saturday was as good as any gig since that first Rock City gig.

Cheers

So, it's a New Year with plenty of new gigs to enjoy. What's coming up for you?

Inga Copeland and others at Haus der elektronischen Künste this Friday. Can't think of many better tracks from last year than My Advice to Young Girls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pse2TOVAkT8).

Gazelle Twin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMiPD6EqbyQ) at the same place next Saturday. I wasn't blown away by her last album but it's the kind of thing which may well benefit from some live volume.

Might go to DJ Shadow on the 30th depending on whether or not I'm away for the weekend.

The big news, for me, is that the mighty Prolapse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P--PC85Hppw) are getting back together. A couple of gigs supporting Mogwai in June to start with and hopefully something more to come.

So, it's a New Year with plenty of new gigs to enjoy. What's coming up for you?

In Bristol in March the legendary Dr John will be playing as well as the glorious Lester Freamon himself Clarke Peters!

QuoteOriginally from New York, he began his career as a street busker in France before getting his first professional job in a French theatre production. In the 1970's, he moved to London and formed a soul band called The Majestics, singing on such classics as Joan Armatrading's Love and Affection and Heatwave's Boogie Nights, and he also wrote two musical theatre productions including Five Guys Names Moe which ran for over four years in the West End.

For this special show, Peters returns to his roots to pay tribute to the musical heroes who personally touched his life. These include Louis Jordan, a pioneering musician who wrote music for Clarke's musical, jazz vocalist Joe Williams and legendary swing singer Billy Eckstine.

:o Blimey. His creative output is not just doll's house furniture then...

Also - the amazing Turbowolf are playing an £8 show at the end of April which is a definite. They're an amazing live band.

Just 2 Anathema gigs lined up so far - first in March @ Winchester Cathedral, doing an 2 hour acoustic set and looking forward to that. Second in April, up in London, and that's going to be a doozy - will be covering all their musical output back to their death/doom origins and will have guest appearances from ex-members of the band.

MASTODON

Got the tickets today for a gig in June. Well pleased because I couldn't make their gig last November and I never thought they'd pass by here so soon after. It's always difficult to convince anyone I know to come and see heavier gigs but this time I managed it so the added bonus is I won't be Johnny No Mates. Seeing gigs alone is no fun at all.

Let's see if I convince anyone to see Napalm Death when they come here in May.

Managed to get tickets fro me and the boy to see Muse on their mini tour. Tickets released (Pre-sale) Wed just gone, gig next Thursday at Newport Centre (My home town!).
Last time I saw them was in a 35,000 capacity tour at Coventry Ricoh Arena so it will be nice to see them toned down in this smaller environment! The boy is the fan but I am quickly gaining an appreciation for their musicianship and showmanship as they are extremely good live!

The great voice that is Nadine Shah is this weeks musical gigette.

I'm seeing her at the Deaf Institute in Manchester, which I've never been to, but will be around my 15th venue in that fair city to watch gigs. looking forward to it, she's got a hell of a set of pipes...

Got the 2nd of these coming up on Thursday - and now that they've been on the tour for a few days, the setlist has made its way to setlist.fm

28 songs over 3 sets, starting with recent material and going back through the albums all the way to the first releases (EPs included) Based on the content of set 3, it's going to be a cracker.

Wire (http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/02/wire-announce-new-studio-album-stream-joust-jostle-listen), King Tut's in a couple of weeks. Nice.

Will cleanse the palate after Simple Minds last week in Edinburgh. Not terrible, but also, not my kinda thing. You do get a sensational receding hairline view from the Upper Circle.

Faith No More in Glasgow in June, can't wait. One of my all time life-long favorite bands, only managed to catch them once before and it was absolute gig nirvana so this should be fun! It's at the Academy though which is a downer, I've never heard a decent mix in there.

So, to try and makes things a bit more definite, I bought tickets to see Bjork in New York at Easter. Quite interested in any other potential rhyming gigs: U2 at the zoo, AC/DC at the bottom of the sea, that sort of thing.
Hilariously, this gig was cancelled.

Last week me and a mate went to see Twilight Sad. Arrived around 9:15, saw two and a half songs, then they finished and I've just realised I'm missing A Place to Bury Strangers tonight as well. Gah!

Still, hope springs eternal. Tickets purchased for Bob Dylan in July, Cut Hands and a trip to Les Nuits Sonores (http://www.nuits-sonores.com/prog/artistes/) in Lyon in May. Also contemplating Godspeed You! Black Emperor the night before my birthday and Body Count in June.

That sounds like a ridiculously early start! Been stung by that sort of thing occasionally, 9pm is usually the optimal arrival time if I want to skip the support bands but once in a while they'll catch you out.

Might look into Godspeed, been really enjoying the new record.

9pm as a rule-of-thumb sounds pretty risky to me  :-\
Been caught out by Dylan due to an "early" start and that's.... annoying.
Doesn't help that support acts are almost always terrible, and often excruciating!

Yeah. 9pm is always my strategy as well, unless they actually tell you it's an early start. I do have one mate who always insists on being there at starting time. I genuinely believe he's seen every band on every bill at every gig he's been to since he was 14.

I was aware that Dylan is always on stage early and never has a support these days. He played the SECC a few years ago with a 7:30 doors open time on the ticket. We got there around ten to eight to be told we'd already missed five songs.

Oh I don't know about support acts being hard work. I mean sure they can be, but you can also find some gems in there. They can be a great source of discovery. That's before you consider the numerous gigs were the support has been the reason I've gone and have in fact left before or during the headliners.

Normally I'll aim to get to a 7.30 doors gig for 8pmish to catch the support. After all in a decent venue there are worse fates than proping up the bar with ya mates!

I do like the increasing trend for bands to tweet/facebook the set times on the day of a gig, off to Therapy? tonight and they're saying an 8:30pm start so I know to be punctual! Can't wait, must have seen them a dozen times and always, always grin like a loon throughout. Fantastic live band, and the new album is a corker.

Just got tickets for Dog Fashion Disco in Glasgow later in the year! They're my fiance's favorite band and the only previous opportunity to go see them was a crowdfunded gig in London which we went down to. I hadn't been too bothered about them up to that point but they really won me over, and she was in tears of joy that she was finally seeing them so the fact it's come around again and is in our back yard will really make her day :)

Alas I've got shed loads on this weekend and so I'm committing the crime of living in Sheffield, but probably not going to Tramlines (I believe the main stages have sold out?). Billy Bragg, Da Wu Tang (though I've just read they've pulled out), Mike Skinner, Sugar Hill Gang... sigh so much good stuff this year but we've got so much to sort in the house before we go on holiday (having work done while we're away).

DAMNIT!

Have the Wu Tang ever actually turned up for a gig they're billed as playing? Sorry to hear you're not going to make it along to see Billy though. Is Tramlines your local Indietracks knock-off?

Tension growing here as there are only 9 days left for Bjork to cancel her Berlin gig. Might see Bonnie Prince Billy on Monday night if I manage to catch up with some life admin over the weekend.

Formerly upcoming gigs update:

Holly Herndon a couple of weeks ago was jolly good. Wasn't sure how it would go down live but it was fine and she had a pretty interesting interactive light/stage show going on.

Bob Dylan was far away and intent on bluegrassing everything to death but his voice was on good form and a raucous Ballad of a Thin Man and Visions of Johanna went down well.

It's a festival of the tweeest indiepop imaginable (http://www.indietracks.co.uk/) which takes place in railway museum near Derby so you can go on a steam train ride if you get fed up with all the floppy-fringed feyness. I just thought the names were quite similar.

True, it's a two-hour drive for me but if you don't support such nicely-curated events the bands will stop coming to these smaller venues. There were only about 300 in attendance for Mastodon a couple of months ago, so I doubt they'll be back. Depends if they got an up-front fee to make it worth their while or a cut on ticket sales, which wouldn't be so good for a band that size.

That said, a few years back Napalm Death inexplicably played a free gig in a dead-end rural village very near where I live (middle of nowhere), so I'm guessing they get a fee. When they played the Dead Kennedy's Nazi Punks F*** Off they got booed by a faction of barrel-chested secessionist farm lads!

Going to see Dog Fashion Disco next week which should be fun. They're Bea's favourite band but being very small they seemingly never tour outside the US. They did a kickstarter a while back to do a gig in London and we went down for it and I think for her it was a bit of an emotional experience finally seeing them! So to get to see them again so soon and in Glasgow is very nice.

Went to see Tracii Guns and Rudy Sarzo last night. Very good show as you'd expect from them both. Ears are still ringing though. Next up the Wildhearts later in the month

My mate posted this on FB and I knew you'd be as happy as he was.

It's gotten so I've had to set up a google docs spreadsheet to keep track of what's coming up. Highlights of the rest of the year include: Container on Saturday night; Kraftwerk in Grenoble; Neneh Cherry; Godspeed!; Heather Nova; Burning Star Core and maybe Jon Spencer.

My sister played Don't Go so blimmin' often when I was a kid that I still have it in my head from time to time but I never knew the words. I have: "Don't go / don't tre-rowrowrow" instead. She actually met the band a couple of years ago.

I Saw bon jovi last month at the F1 in Singapore,
they where CRAP!!!!!

forgot the basic rules of this stage of a large career over prolonged period of time.
SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS.
90 minute set, 6 of their high selling hits, and the rest the new album, giutar solos, and nonsense,
very disappointing.

BUT ELTON JOHN is in town December 1st so its a great day of the board advent calendar and great showmanship for me that day. (seen him several times always good)

 Iron-Maiden (http://www.blacksabbath.com/)

Black-Sabbath (http://www.ironmaiden.com/)

Who may both may be the very same band with different lead singers are touring next year or late this year, but in my country next year.

I thought it was Bruce ( Who walked up to me on Bondi beach one morning just ten yrs ago and poked me in the chest with ten dollar note saying in a strong German accent....

Get your self a meal...

Maybe another delusion of mine.

Now is my chance to pay him back by getting ticket to see his and Ozzy's show.

That may come to half a grand.

Not that I listen to a lot of their music personally, I still know they may be two of the greatest Heavy Metal bands from the U.K. and it would be folly to miss them on that one small detail.

Seriously, the only music of they'rs I remember liking is  Crazy-Train (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwDpAfFzcRQ) and think that was when Ozzy went solo....something I recall from the first Ghost-Rider movie while Johhny was doing his famous motorcycle stunt in front of audience in a very large tent. Made me envy his profession with that music blaring in my ears.

BTW, the undead mascot used in a lot of the Iron Maiden cover work belongs in a Slaine comic.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor on Thursday night, then Kraftwerk on Friday. Don't really understand what a 3D concert is (or why none of the others I've ever been to qualify) but looking forward to finding out.

Unexpectedly saw Acid Mothers Temple (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H2Qk9KyhY4) at very short notice last week. In a ramshackle concrete shed on an industrial estate under a railway bridge in the shadow of a football ground. I've seen them a few times before, but this was an absolute corker.

I love Acid Mothers Temple - they played an entrancing but oddly rather short show in Bristol last year and I'd love to see them again.

This Thursday I will be mostly watching KADAVAR

HORISONT

and THE SHRINE

Three retroheavy bands I got into separately all randomly playing together for like £13 - I've been up for this for months.

Bon Jovi.. haven't heard of them until I changed high schools after year ten. That was in 1986 and as some people might do. My attitude changed from that year onwards after that year. Including music. It was only through long conversations with some Italian during my spare periods, (It's kind of sad to know that my education meant so little to my self and the school, that I had these spare periods where I sit in the library and do nothing of any consequence which is that different from when I am doing a one of my main subjects!)

They were big in 87....when they possibly broke out into the main stream of music or that may have been the year before.

Thing is, I hadn't been aware of them before he said a lot about them before he said so and then I noticed a lot of girls at school were obsessing over this band as well. A few guys including.... as they were more popular with everybody rather than just girls.

With the smash hit of You Give Love A Bad Name and Living on a Prayer......every body in my home room within my ear shot was talking of their tour and concert at Boodall entertainment centre. Located in a suburb of the same name in northerly direction from the city of Brisbane. I'm just guessing they played there. It's the place to be for a large music gig when ever basket-ball or indoor hockey season hasn't taken too much space their during their seasons.

Any other little known venue or Festival-Hall would have been too small for these guys. Even though, I had seen my favourite band The angels twice at this other place. Nothing wrong with it if you don't mind the antiquity concert halls in  Brisbane (I recall the smell of second hand hemp-leaves...) aside from the The Roxy in the Fortitude-Valley in what pass's for Red-Light-District. This was across the road from a place I use to frequent and sometimes still do (http://forums.2000adonline.com/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Mind you, I just kept to the Central-Business-District during my latest school years and only on those special occasions.

So, I enjoyed their music too, but being on little funds in those years. I was happy to be paid five dollars pocket money a week (In those days!) and it's saved unless you spend it at the tuck-shop. Thus, I was never moved buy any of their cassette tapes as I would for other music I really liked.

I have very vivid memory of going to one of my first Ed-For-Leisure camping trips early one morning and in the small mini-bus it's re-petative backing vocalisation that were the most memorable part of Living on a Prayer. I didn't even care about the lyrics, it was just the right noise. Being played on the radio on the way to where ever we went back then and girls. There were girls there, that was nice.

Yet, by the time they did Bad-Medicene I had gotten over their hype and if my only memory of this song's film clip being just black-white. You might want to compare that to the tendency to show this in video games where your avatar is close to death (Or dead if you playing WOW) and I know those earlier songs were black n white as well. Just going by memory here. I'll not even bother to check You-Tube. Yeah, this band was well know for this art-quality back in the day.

In my opinion......

Finally saw Def Leppard last night! The first band I ever loved (been into them since I was about 5 or something, so 30 years-ish?!) so it was a bit special and very exciting indeed.

It was a co-headliner with Whitesnake, but Scotrail totally screwed me on my commute so we only caught about 5 minutes of them.

So who are the other two? And who's he touring with? I'm sure it will be a grand day out regardless but I saw him with Crazy Horse a couple of years ago and there were quite a few people in the crowd clearly bemused at the lack of gentle Harvest Moon type stuff.

A few coming up for me next month: Public Service Broadcasting, Bo Ningen supporting Savages and Saul Williams.

More excitingly, after several years of rumination, I've finally bought tickets for this year's Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona. Bardo Pond (finally), AR Kane (extraordinarily) and Jenny Hval (provocatively) look to be the early standouts from a cast of thousands.

Might also go and see old jazz dude Peter Brotzmann next Monday for the sole reason that the once had a Glasgow gig closed down by the police because it was too loud.

Well its funny you should ask that as I've mentioned that here and to a couple of friends and its occured to me that, yeah sure Tom Waits has always been there but for the life of me I can't think who the third is. Its always been in my head that I have three, Neil Young, Tom Waits and...

Now I fear the third might be Bruce S BUT I'm not sure if I could actually handle 3 hours of Bruce S anymore, for years I've always wanted to see him as I was a massive fan as a kid. Now I think it might be just a thing that got stuck in my head.

Oh I'm a Crazy Horse type person and I'll be disappointed if its not lacking in quiet Harvest Moon type stuff. I WANT WELD, I want 'Hurricane' to wig out on feedback for 20 minutes. Alas its with 'Promise of the Real' and I'm not quite sure what type of set that means as I know nowt about them.

If I get the quieter acoustic numbers so be it.

Very jealous about Primavera, when I was young and energetic always wanted to do one of the Barcelona festivals

Well saw Neil Young last night in Leeds and it was incredible. It was an almost perfectly constructed set, even if I was being fussy some of the individual songs weren't exactly what I'd have picked. It built from stone cold acoustic classics slowly and and steadily into full on wig out rocking and by the end it was Weld!

Jez though the fella's 70 its time he settled down a little, he still completely rocks. Force of nature that fella!

Fresh after seeing her play with Puscifer (which was fantastic and strange and brilliant), just twigged that Carina Round is doing a solo UK tour so will be seeing her in Glasgow. Should be great, Tuts so a nice small venue.

I did the Stone Roses thing last weekend. They were pretty bloody awesome, better than I expected & something I never thought I'd get to see.

Back in Manc for Tomorrows gig, which is Don Henley (for the gfriend) and then it's the big one on Saturday, the one & only Buddy Guy... man of the blues!  :)

A few friends came over to visit me and go diving in Guernsey this weekend. Added to that there was an 80's themed tribute concert at Castle Cornet, St Peter Port. Amazingly the whole of the castle ground where open for use, so we headed up to the east wing tower gardens where the concert amplified throughout the place. Phenomenal, one of the best venues you could wish to have.

I've been forced to listen to Rhianna and Beyonce recently, simply by virtue of living within a 10 mile radius of Old Trafford cricket ground.

Going to Blue Dot festival at Jodrell Bank in a couple of weeks, featuring amongst others Beth Orton and Jean Michel Jarre, along with lots of science-geek stuff

Beth Orton is always worth seeking out, especially as she gigs so infrequently these days. She has a new album out that's back to the electronica days and has many wonderful songs in her back catalogue to showcase. Enjoy!

Read about this a couple of weeks ago as one of my favourite bands - 65daysofstatic - are playing it. Sounds like a really interesting weekend. Think I'd definitely go if I lived nearby.

I find the fact that Steve Davis is mad into obscure Prog rock and techno (http://www.factmag.com/2016/04/15/steve-davis-snookerstar-dj-bbc-documentary-bloc-2016/) massively endearing.

Oh, and Patti Smith was amazing last week.

Yeah a friend of mine works in the electronics dept in Guitar Guitar and they had Steve Davis in quite recently buying synths and gear for some sort of show he was playing at. I had no idea he was so into music, and apparently a very nice chap to boot.

Just got tickets for Arctangent Festival - http://www.arctangent.co.uk/ (http://www.arctangent.co.uk/)

I've actually never done the full festival experience, I've been to 2 day things but always gone back to a bed at night, so this'll be the first time I've done the whole 'camp for 4 days' thing. Going with a good gang of mates and my wife is a seasoned Leeds Fest veteran so hopefully they can look after me!

Have always wanted to see GYBE and ASIWYFA so that's a big draw, and the fact I'm unfamiliar with most of the lineup is quite exciting.

I couldn't decide where I could post this, so the music thread seemed the logical choice.

I was snapping away in my liveable home last week and found evidence that Ringo Starr may have been using a stolen Lawgiver.  Also looks like McCartney may be getting prepped for Titan.

Going to see John Carpenter next month in Edinburgh and while loads of bands do the VIP meet and greet ticket thing I've never opted for it until now, but I figured what the hell. It's John bloody Carpenter. Not sure what to expect, think it just means you get some signed merch and get to awkwardly say hello to him and then pose for an awkward photo with him and then spend the rest of your life reflecting on how awkward it was (this is me we're talking about, for others awkwardness levels may vary or be non-existant).

The show itself will be tremendous I'm sure.

Lol , that sums up my own thoughts perfectly, I've got a VIP meet and greet for the Heaven 17 gig coming up in Liverpool with guests Glen Matlock and Mari Wilson and not sure "how to handle it".

Also got a ticket booked for the John Carpenter gig in Liverpool, seems a bit wierd him playing just up the road from where I live, Assault on Liverpool 13.  :)

Nice, I'm sure it'll be a memorable experience whatever happens. I've had some nice meetings like that and some more awkward ones and sometimes (when I'm feeling less pessimistic) I suspect even the ones I think were awkward are mostly just a case of me overthinking things after the fact, which to be fair I do with most regular day to day conversations anyway (the joys of social anxiety)! I'm sure the acts doing these meet and greet things are used to a bit of awkwardness and it just comes with the territory, and if Carpenter wasn't the grumpy guy I imagine him to be I might even be disappointed.

Really looking forward to the gig, so glad he's doing this and that we're getting a chance to hear this stuff live. Hope the Heaven 17 one is fun too!

Cheers for that, I may have a few scoops before the H17 meet, it "may" help ;).  Met The Stranglers a few times and spoke mostly with bassist JJ Burnel, initially I wasn't sure if I'd get the treatment some people/journalists have previously encountered with them over the years, but I ended up supping half a bottle of his fave wine as he was talking about his favourite French Vineyards, while I droned on about my lifelong passion with all things JAWS, a surreal night for the memory banks.

Meeting Christopher Lee really was an encounter to remember, he did a short UK signing around 10 years ago to support a DVD release of a movie he was in, it was at the Adelphi hotel in Liverpool where I asked him if he knew when another of his films "Night of the Big Heat" was due out (as it was to include his recent audio commentary) and he barked back at me "WELL I DON'T KNOW"  :o :-[ :), I realised there and then that you don't mess with the Count and he's as menacing in the flesh as on screen, Hammer Films didn't really have to do much back then than just let him loose on set lol.

Hope you enjoy the Carpenter gig/meet too, should be a night to remember.

Didn't really have them pegged as the type who'd go for that "play an old album" nostalgia market, but still delighted to see that Boris (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CjsaFBQA1Q) will be stopping nearby at the start of December. They're about 35 quid each but I'd take 50 for the pair from a Squaxx.

John Carpenter is this weekend! Very excited, but also still pretty nervous about the meet and greet bit. Got a mail with the details and the signing is strictly limited 'to 2 personal items'. My plan had been to get one thing signed for myself and one for a friend, so now I'm worried that'll be a problem, or that asking for a personalized 'To...' autograph might even be frowned upon and he'll say no.

Stupid as it sounds, I don't want to do anything that might make the experience awkward or regrettable so am probably over-stressing!

Off to see the evergreen Paul Simon this weekend. He says he's going to try and retire from music just to see what it's like after this tour and album, Stranger to Stranger.

Which is excellent by the way, some great songs on the record and a return to form for him after some patchy years.

I don't think he will be able to give it up, music, rythm and wordery are in his blood and he still sings and performs to a very high standard... those small fingers will get far too itchy...

It's usually the other way round - nowadays a lot of people will refuse to sign anything UNLESS it's personalised, to avoid chancers who are just going to stick it straight on eBay

And I'm jealous of Jaquesie., I'd love to see Mr Simon, only wish it could've been a couple of decades ago. haven't heard the latest - So Beautiful So What was okay but didn't blow my socks off - not a patch on Hearts &B Bones or Graceland.

Yeah, that's a good point. In the end my nerves were totally unfounded. He was more than happy to make them out to whoever, and went out of his way to double-check the spelling of names and to ask about the people he was signing for and if they would be at the show and stuff. He really couldn't have been any nicer about it, and when he saw it was the Lost Themes vinyl I had he went and grabbed his son and guitarist (who had also played on the album with him) and got them to sign it too which was nice.

I was genuinely really nervous about the whole thing (partly because he seems to have a reputation for being pretty grumpy about those things, and because the negative way my brain tends to reflect on things usually means whenever I've met someone I've been a fan of I've managed to find a reason to feel regretful or embarrassed about it in retrospect) but he was so cool and cheerful that the actual meeting was just a really nice relaxed experience. Still buzzing about it, and the show was fantastic too!

The Cure in Manchester - loved every minute - Bob's lost a bit of timber & was on great form

Rod Stewart (Don't laugh) - he made up for some of the schmaltz with some brill old faces songs

and The Wonderstuff - second time this year and they were full of beans in their revival

Can't remember if I put down Lush's final gig (?) which was amazing & hope they are just having another break from it all.

Think I need a sit down after all that...  :)

The Flaming Lips this weekend. 1st experience of those crazy guys & looking forward to seeing what it's all about!  :)

Seen the Flaming Lips any number of times (between them and Deerhoof for my most watched band I image) and they really are magnificent. I do wish however they'd pull back the pyrotechnics... well fluffy bunnies and what not, as its got to the point where it seems to have become more important than the material and I'd love um to strip it make and let the songs shine more.

Still no doubt you'll have a magnificent time. It is quite a show, or at least was last time I saw them.

We had such a great time at ArcTanGent last year that we're going back again, so that'll be a fun weekend. The only bands announced so far are Converge (who my wife loves but I find a little too relentless) and Explosions In The Sky, who I've never seen so looking forward to that.

Would be cool if Scott Ian turned up at least, he's the Dredd fan I believe.
I've seen them twice before but not their own gig. Saw them at Donington in 1987 and then supporting Iron Maiden in 1990!

It was brilliant - the unicorn, the showers of glitter and ticker tape with the huge beachballs were ace... but the show stopper was Wayne Zorbing across the crowd whilst singing Space Oddity in his giant inflatable ball... :P

I also managed to see The Blue Aeroplanes last month at the Leadmill, and they blew the socks off - with some young guns in the band alongside Gerald, it was the best I've ever seen them at 30 years young.

Now for the new Ride LP and tour fingers X'd!  :)

So out of touch these days. Can't remember the last time I went the Leadmill!

It was at Manchester Academy Colin - they only did a few dates this time round in the UK.

I don't mind heading off to Manc for gigs, I feel rather fortunate that including Sheff, Leeds, Nottingham and Manc are close by to get to see acts.

The Leadmill hasn't changed much & always has someone I want to go see every few months, then there is the O2 Acadamey, City Hall and The Arena (if you want to go and see Little Mix or somesuch...)

Mind you, saying that I'm off to see Iron Maiden there in a few months!

Got a few things on the way to look forward to! Currently sitting on tickets for Depeche Mode (at the Barras no less!!!), Rob Zombie, Jamie Lenman, Paul Draper, Insane Clown Posse (yes, really, although it's not until November so the longest to wait) and the ArcTanGent festival.

There are possibly more that I'm forgetting, but it's looking like a good few months of gigs.

Some really cool stuff on in Glasgow next weekend. I'm not a huge Mode fan but that should be great.

It's been a slow start to the gigging year for me. In fact, Ennio Morricone last week might even have been the first. It was pretty cool hearing an 80 strong choir all doing the "Huh-HUH!" from Good, Bad & Ugly together, but the stuff from The Mission was the standout.

Starting to get a few dates in the old diary now. Colin Stetson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWtmGRkL5cw) the night before my birthday, Sleaford Mods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udp6fZ9vWCI) a couple of weeks later then Afghan Whigs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSZKlAAUfR8) and John Cale later in the year.

That's a great bag! Like the rest of us, you will be able to hear it back on 6 Music too - good effort. Much better venue to see DM than the London Staduim too. I'm hoping the announce some more dates for the tour in the UK for the rest of us.

I managed a sneaky Elbow gig at Doncaster Dome of all places in the week, which was up to their usual fine standard.

Really looking forward to Elvis Costello at Sheffield City Hall tomorrow, never seen him before after missing his gigs so many times & finally I'm thrilled to be going.  :)

He was very good and played a solo set for 2 and half hours! I was wondering if he would do a tribute to Chuck Berry and shure nuff he did 'Riding Along...' with Chucks old guitar.

To get the lowdown on Gigs Colin, I use the promoter website and get emails with announcements almost everyday so as to keep up with whose in town. Also checking the venue sites and flyers is always a good source too!  :)

Hawkwind at Worthing or Dorking, not sure which yet but I will see them, for the 13th time.
Iron Maiden at the O2. Really loooking forward to this, I havent seen them since 2008.
King's X at Islington Assembly Hall. My favourite band and my 19th time seeing them.
Primus at the Roundhouse. Another big favourite of mine, I love everything Les Claypool does.
Flogging Molly at Kentish Town Forum.
Green Day and many many more at Hyde Park (My "sort of grandson"s" first gig).

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul in Manchester in June. Can't bloody wait - "Men Without Women" is my favourite album with an E Street connection (and I'm a huge Springsteen fan). It's the first time Steve's toured the U.K. with his own band in at least thirty years, and hell... the guys a legend. Download the Underground Garage app to hear his radio show where he plays just the greatest garage rock around. And he was Silvio. And Frank. And.... (gushes hero worship long into the night)...

The Bob of the Dylan was on Friday in outgoing gigs. He didn't say hello, or thank you, as is his way and he did a few great American songbook crooning numbers...

But that's all forgiven for the epic renditions of Desolation Row, Ballad of a Thin Man and Tangled up in Blue.

He had his rather fetching Rolling Thunder hat on too and I know that he'll be back this way again soon on his never ending tour (hopefully)

Always a good gig the Weddoes with Gedgy.

I also managed to get tickets for The National today in Manc, they sold out fast!  :)

I went to see Swans yesterday. It was the loudest, most musically intense thing I've ever experienced. Frontman Michael Gira was an apocalyptic shaman, both summoning up and surrendering himself to the titanic noiseforce he'd invoked. They played five songs in two and a half hours - the first one lasted fifty minutes. Afterwards, as I staggered out the door, I heard a fellow gig-goer falteringly exclaim "That was like.. therapy." He was right. Transcendental.

I'm off to see Depeche Mode on 3rd June, been a fan since the late 80's and their new album goes some way to recapture the level they were hitting in the mid 90's.
Be interested if there are any other DM fans on here, I get the impression there's a lot of metalheads!  :)

Cheers! Shame you can't squeeze 'em in, though honestly, if you can find any way to do so, you won't regret it. I have never experienced anything like it. Anyone with any interest in any kind of intense or extreme music has to witness Swans live at least once. I've never been so aware of sound as a physical force. (My ears are still a bit funny, two days later.)

Not so much upcoming as I just got back from it, but I had a fab weekend at Blue Dot Festival at Jodrell Bank - lots of great bands plus oodles of sciencey stuff, all in the shadow of the mighty Lovell telesope - Big shout out to Conor & Lizzie Boyle who I ran into for the second year running.

Friday's highlight was Leftfield performing the whole of Leftism, closely followed by a night of cosmic space insanity with Age of Glass and Henge. Pixies were okay, but not really my thing - their fans seemed ecstatic though. Most ridiculous amount of stage smoke I've ever seen in my life during their encore!

On Saturday, Shura, Soulwax and Goldfrapp were all pretty good but Orbital blew the fuckin' roof off :D (or would have done if it was indoors) -they even got the Radiophonic Workshop guys up to help with the Dr Who theme.

More subdued on Sunday, didn't get quite so mashed or see so many bands - spent much of the day in vampire mode, hidng Saturday's sunburn by flitting from tent to tent. Warpaint were intersting, and Hawkwind could deliver a festival set in their sleep. Caught up on all the lush festival food and real ales I'd not tried yet.

Didn't see as much science stuff as I intended (again) - the talk by Dave Prowse and Brian Muir (sculptor and model maker behind much of Star Wars, Alien, Bond etc) was full of inertersting subject matter but delivered by two uncharismatic and frankly bored seeming stars. Muir's CV is astonishing but the (out of sync) slideshow playing behind him was far more interesting than his talk which was largely lists of things that he'd made in famous movies , trailing off with "errrm ... and that's how we did that..." Dave Prowse was no more scintillating - Sample of the Q&A:
(Small child) "Was it hard to breathe in the Darth vader mask"
(Dave Prowse) "No. It was easy."
(another small child) "Which was the hardest scene to film?"
(Dave Prowse) "ummm .. none of them were hard really"
Yeah, top anecdotes there Dave.

Brilliant weekend overall but I've danced my aged spine and joints into oblivion - everything is stiff and painful today!

Nick Cave - Nottingham Arena (best ever arena gig I've been to)

Suzanne Vega - Manchester Bridgewater Hall (wonderful as always)

Riding (indeed) the showgaze nu-wave, I caught Ride a few weeks ago, where the audience were much more sedated than when I first saw them 25 years ago. I managed to look at my shoes a few times, but their presence on stage was much more aluring than all those years ago, fabulous stuff!

Upcoming gigs are The Divine Comedy in Manc and The Charlatans in Sheffield.

I'm starting to reel my gig spending in now as I've already booked far too may for next year already!  :)

In Tenerife for the week (have photographed some fish) and Kristin Hersh is playing a free gig tonight!

That's a great score! I missed Kristin Hersh when she was in Blighty. Still holding out for a TM tour one day, although Belly are coming back to UK in the summer.

I tottered on over to see some old rockers last week. Robert Plant at Sheffield City hall was, as you expect very good, some new stuff and some old Led Zep stuff made a great night.

Then I had a trip to Leeds to see Fish (of Marillion fame) - but the trains were crapped out so got there nearly an hour into his set. So I braved the snow to Manchester the next night and got the full show and helped me and a bloke get a ticket as it was sold out. He played the whole of Clutching at Straws on it's 30th anniversary which was ace, but it means we are all getting old!  :)

Hi Colin, yes I have a Belly ticket for the Leadmill, good that you have too. I did get one for Manchester and then realised that they were playing Sheff!

I am always wondering if the Muses will get it going again, but as you say, Belly are a pretty fine outfit in themselves, I might have to bump into you to say hello!  :)

Ha ha, yes that would be good to maybe say hello.

I did the Belle and Sebastian thing a few weeks back at Manchester Bridgewater Hall, backed by an orchestra and they were fabulous.

So it's back there again for Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) on Saturday to get back to my old prog rock roots.

Saw that Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs) is over in the UK this summer, so snaffled tickets for Buxton Opera house in July.

...the venues are getting grander the more we all get older it seems...  :P

I veer from really liking the Barnett to finding some of her stuff rather pedestrian. Still, she's doing good and I hope you have a brill gig.

I saw aging folk stalwart Micheal Chapman perform a great set on Friday in Sheff and it's the return of Gomez tonight in that there Manchester Royal Albert Halls, playing the whole of Bring in on... yes indeedy!  :)

I know what you mean, but I'm hoping that on stage she'll focus more on the upbeat material. She has a wonderful turn of phrase (and accent - I love the way she pronounces the letter 'o' at the end of words!)

Never actually seen a gig at the Albert halls, but it looks like a great venue now that it's been rescued from being a shitty club and refurbished - a mate saw Faithless there a while back and said it was a cool place.

In an hour our so setting off to see Goat Girl at the Sheffield Picture House, rearranged after the gig was cancelled in April. Anyway whats especially exciting about this is I know next to nothing about them. Its been an age since I just went to gig but my mate Jeff bought ticket after I passed on some vinyl and I'm so stoked to be just popping to a gig for going to a gigs sake... and having just listened to a couple of tracks sounds like it might be a good night to...

Just had a bit of a run of gigs from:

The Rolling Stones - amazing from Mick and the lads, so glad I finally got to see them

The THE at the Royal Albert Hall - a wonderful return from Matt Johnson and great new band

Belly - at the leadmill in Sheff, what did you think Colin?

Ray Lamontagne (snore)

David Byrne - one of the most inventive shows I've seen, so much creativity and energy.

Got a few coming up in July - Eels and Steve Winwood - both in Manchester a day after each other.

No summer festivals for me, I need a bit of a rest!  :)

Thought the second set was a big improvement on the first and by the end my white belly was indeed up.

I keep getting this the wrong way around - regailing gigs I've been too instead of ones I'm going to.

Posted the following in one of the prog slog threads as they'd got to the Nigel Dobbyn era.

I did see Death Ingloria not so long ago, at the Unicorn pub, Camden (not Camden Town, but on Camden Road, on the border with Islington North) - if you get the chance, go see them/her.  I also got a seven-page comic at the gig, written by Galina Ain (the person who gets up on stage) and Hilary Robinson, with artwork by Nigel Dobbyn.  The stage show itself involves artwork by Nigel Dobbyn (some partially animated) projected on to one of those circular projector screens.

Website here (https://www.deathingloria.com).

... Eels

a friend asked if i wanted to go to this - I'd love to see the Stones live once before I die but tickets were  a bit rich for me. I could hear it a bit from Hulme a few miles away, but have fond memories of the last time they played Manchester - a lovely barbecue at a mate's who lived next to Maine Rd - we saw nothing, but could hear it all.

Didn't know eels were coming here - would love to see 'em but sold out now  :(

The Breeders in Manchester last night. Heard someone say Cannonball was worth the price of admission alone and while that is such an anthemic classic it really shouldn't over-shadow the fantastic depth they have in their tunes. Just superb.

I saw them a few tours ago after a spur of the moment ticket buy. Likewise, not expecting anything, they blew me away. Apart from the great sound and players, the on-stage charisma of that man, decades later, is still something to behold.

That was my reasoning in 1995 when I couldn't afford it and even much more so in 2018 when I was lucky enough to go!

Some recent gigs:

Paul Simon - Manchester - sadly his swansong tour but such an amazing gig

Natalie Merchant (10, 000 Maniacs) - Buxton - So glad I finally got to see her

Ride - Sheffield - Sounding better than ever as their second coming continues

and one coming up next month:

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Sheffield Leadmill - who knows what performance will ensue!  :)

Having missed the last two end-of-year-ish Fields of the Nephilim London gigs*, I was determined to make the Halloween show at Shepherd's Bush Empire, and I'm glad I did, because they were really good. I've been going to Fields gigs since 1988, and I've never heard them sound better.

*Couldn't make the timing work last year, and the ceiling fell in at the Empire the year before forcing the gig to change venue and date to one I couldn't make.

I saw the gig the Astoria gig they did in 2007 (didn't realise it was that long ago!) and again a year later at M'era Luna (huge goth festival in Hildesheim, Germany, for those who haven't heard of it) - the M'era Luna one was far greater - presumably intentionally they sang Dawnrazor as the sun went down...

Have heard nothing but incredibly OTT hyperbole about these shows but have not been able to get to one . Perfect example: we're in Amsterdam this weekend. When we arranged it we decided the Sunday evening flight home was better than the combination of another night in the hotel and a 6am start on Monday. Then checked what gigs were on that weekend and it's Big Dave on Sunday night and Lykke Li on Monday.

I'm off to Def Leppard the week after next. I hardly ever go to any gigs. The last proper one was U2 in 2010.

As I understand it they will be playing all of Hysteria in order plus a few others to close.

After an aborted visit (due to the weather) to the Steelhouse Festival in July last year, we finally got our 2 girls to their first major gig on Wednesday night - Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators with Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons supporting.

Youngest (almost 9) loved the support - she loves Motorhead, so hearing Phil Campbell knock out a few songs (including her favourite 'Born to raise hell') hit the mark. She lasted 4 songs of the Slash set before managing to zonk out in her seat until the last song of the main set so she managed to hear that and the 2 encore songs.

Eldest (10) loved the whole thing - singing, dancing, rocking out with my wife beside her doing the same. Brilliant bonding for them, and they're already looking in to the what their next gig together will be (while I stay home with the youngest, natch)

Always thought that the Poppies had a great name, but the music never quite matched it.

Whereas the Neds were on fine form, the mixing these days means you can hear the vocals & the guitar gets turned down accordingly, but it was great to go bouncing again as we all killed our televisions...

Sebadoh at Manchester Academy 2.

Well magnificent as ever and check out Lou's 12 string.

Fantastic as they may be two things struck me.

Firstly how quiet in was, in terms of audience size. I mean Sebadoh might not be lauded in quite the same way as some Indie heroes of the 90s be damn they are a magnificent band and should be.

Secondly how lush Lou Barlow's hair is after all this time and turmoil. Rocks a glorious mop and maybe that's why it was so quiet all us aging expanding indie kids are just jealous of his lack of follical challenge?!?

I'd be really interested to hear how that goes. And what the mix is between old and new. The last two albums are understandably different to the ones before. They are without doubt amazing live. Where are you seeing them?

30 years ago as a 14 year old, a mate & I made my our to Sheffield City hall to see Marillion. I've always meant to go see them again, but at the time was rather infatuated with them and decided I'd better broaden my musical horizons.

So may gigs later and they are touring with a full Orchestra so I popped along to Manchester Bridgewater Hall last week and wow, what a wall of noise in an amaing show. They were outstanding and worth the long wait to return back to a band still on top of their live game.

Its RIDE in a few weeks back in Sheffield and its 27 years since I first saw them, and I'm starting to feel distinctly old!

Been a bit of a sparse year for gig, but I did get to see YONAKA at Mcr Academy last week and they absolutely tore the house down. Funny how I first saw them as a lead in gig for Chemical Bros years ago but now they're doing pretty good for themselves. Chuffed!

Not much now but next year? Hatari. Rammstein. Babymetal. All in 3 months?! Gonna be a good year 2020!

Saw BORIS play last night. Lovely to watch them play again. They played a massive set with focus on their latest album Love & Evol and some older songs, a good mix between calm somber songs and heavy drone numbers. They ended things amazingly with Farewell.

I went to two gigs* last year, the first since The Before Times™ and, although various lockdowns have somewhat exacerbated my pre-existing discomfort in large groups of people, I'd forgotten just how much I'd missed live music. Next up will be Eisbrecher in May, which I imagine is going to be really fucking loud.

*Both Fields of the Nephilim, as it happened. Booked tickets to see them at the Whitby Gothic Weekend because, when the gig was announced, it looked like it might be their only UK date that year. Then they announced a mini-tour in December playing the whole of the sublime 'The Nephilim' album, right through, in order... and I couldn't not.

Well not upcoming but went to see The Go! Team Friday gone at the Leadmill Sheffield and it was an ASTONISHING gig. I mean top 10 of all time and I've been to a lot of gigs as I'm very old.

I've just got tickets to see Jungle Rot in a couple of months - last time I saw them in the UK there were only three paying customers in a pretty big venue (Dudley JBs, for old Midlands gig-goers). This time they're at the much smaller and more suitable Black Heart in London.

Seeing Eisbrecher on Tuesday. Really quite stoked about it... although I'm utterly baffled (whilst being simultaneously pathetically grateful) as to why they're bothering. Notwithstanding the horrendous expense/hassle of getting not one, but two, bands from Germany into the UK post-Brexit, a little checking suggests that the venue (O2 Islington, capacity ~800) is less than half the size of the smallest venue they're playing in mainland Europe, while most of their German dates are 12-15000 capacity arenas.

I'm also a fan of Gong and Kavus Torabi. The modern Gong line-up with Kavus recently were Steve Hillage's backing band for his recent tour, and I saw them in Bristol recently and they were fantastic.

Speaking of Kavus Torabi, he was briefly in a band called The Monsoon Bassoon in the 90s and they did a great album called I Dig Your Voodoo. Well worth a listen.

Going to see Richard Dawson in London tomorrow, which I'm very much looking forward to.

Quite jealous! :) I think this might be their first UK gig, so I couldn't really pass it up. Support from Maerzfeld, who aren't top my of pick of NDH bands, but they have their moments. (https://youtu.be/s3--LaykyTo)

Well, that was fantastic. Managed to catch Maerzfeld's support set, too, and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. For all the macho posturing that Eisbrecher's music conveys, frontman Alex Wesselesky is self-deprecating and very funny. The band seemed to be enjoying the gig as much as the crowd and a splendid time was had by all.

(Although, I'm used to seeing old lags like the Sisters and the Fields, where you generally feel like you've done well if you get an hour out of 'em — a ninety minute set, on top of forty-five minutes by the support, proved to be pretty hard on my ageing knees and ankles!)

This was Eisbrecher's first UK gig, but Wesselesky promised it wouldn't be their last... although his unplanned wardrobe failure during the first encore means he probably won't be buying any outfits from Camden Market for the next one. :)

If you like your metal shouty and German, this is pretty much as shouty and German as metal gets... and it's fucking great. Cautionary note: if you think "sort of in the middle and quite near the front" is the ideal place to see the band, you're going to find yourself in the middle of the mosh, which looked pretty full-on!

I watched the video you linked and quite enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about NDH as a genre but based off Wikipedia I believe I've seen a bunch of bands that would fall under it's banner when I used to go over to Germany for Wacken in the early 2000s.

I'll confess that I did not mosh... but, even so, close on three hours standing, jumping up and down, and the occasional bit of head-banging has taken its toll on my-apparently-not-so-young ankle, knee and shoulder joints!

QuoteI watched the video you linked and quite enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about NDH as a genre but based off Wikipedia I believe I've seen a bunch of bands that would fall under it's banner when I used to go over to Germany for Wacken in the early 2000s.

A cursory Google suggests that Wacken kind of favours more... metally metal than the typical NDH style, which is also known as tanzmetal. It's pretty much literally metal guitars and vocals with a dance beat and often a synth/keyboard line running through it.

As with all genres/subgenres, it's pretty elastic — there are bands who identify under the NDH banner who (IMO) don't have many/any of the defining characteristics, and others who don't but tick all the right boxes. Whatever the ins and outs, they clearly love this stuff in Germany — my workout playlist now runs to eight and a half hours... and it's fantastic workout music. :)
Title: Re: Upcoming Gigs
Post by: Barrington Boots on 10 May, 2023, 10:14:59 PM
Oh yeah, Wacken is a pure metalfest. I haven't been in must be coming up for 20 years as it's no longer to my taste really, but back in the early 2000s it would always have a bit of a mix of bands on that Germans really liked. The guys I spotted on Wiki's list of NDH bands are what the press used to call 'Gothic Metal' - Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, Crematory, Atrocity (who used to be a death metal act).. I'm positive I saw Oomph! there one year and I've definitely seen Knorkator. It wasn't just this kind of stuff, I've even seen marching bands there a couple of times which the Germans adored.

Looking at what you've said about tanzmetal that sounds more the definition of what I thought this kind of music would be. My tastes generally lean to heavier stuff but I'm genuinely interested, I'll be checking some out tomorrow at work, I think.
FWIW My workout playlist is generally synthwave and more electronic leaning stuff. It's much better to work to than metal for some reason.

I hope you enjoy it! :)

It's kind of weird, because I'd always had this idea in my head of what 'heavy' is, but it's kind of hard to deny that Eisbrecher rock really hard (https://youtu.be/yNXMs_y7n9c) but in way that's sort of, well, disciplined...? I'm struggling to find the right word for it.

As with all 'scenes'/subgenres, there are always competing narratives but it seems to be broadly agreed that around '93/'94 the three foundational NDH bands formed: Oomph!, Rammstein, and Megaherz.* Oomph! definitely got an album out first, though. Rammstein, obviously, need no further explanation, but Megaherz are interesting because founding members Alex Wesselesky and Noel Pix then left to form Eisbrecher — the early Megaherz albums (https://youtu.be/5o_Y3OYRyBQ) share far more DNA with Eisbrecher than the later ones (https://youtu.be/dTjm_epL69U) do. I quite like their later stuff, but it's more 'straight' metal than the Wesselesky/Pix years.

If you're shopping around your streaming service of choice for more of this sort of thing, I also like Stahlmann (https://youtu.be/XRoi2_4ri0k) a lot. Unzucht (https://youtu.be/_dRra4786Ww) have some good stuff, too. Schattenmann (https://youtu.be/pYCGwu6yP-I) and Erdling (https://youtu.be/yjxByYD_q0Y) both started out firmly in the NDH camp but have veered off into 'symphonic rock' territory latterly. Heldmaschine (https://youtu.be/z86tMU7oGM8) put the emphasis more on the repetitive dance beat than most of these bands, but have some decent tracks... and I've recently discovered Maschinist (https://youtu.be/X1ToLn-HTdQ), who have an element of menace (https://youtu.be/Oib8d7Pj9nU) that I like a lot.

Honourable mention also to Hämatom, who (to me) seem to occupy an interesting middle ground between thrash and punk (that I find hugely entertaining (https://youtu.be/Bvhjx4-ilfw)) more than strictly NDH.

*Oddly, Die Krupps (https://youtu.be/JDE1T7rLoF4) never seem to feature in these sort of discussions, despite weaving a path between electronica and industrial since the early 80s.

Die Krupps have been popping up on playlists for goth nights I've been to since the early 90s, but somehow I never grasped exactly how long they've been around... until I found out that one of their founding members left to form quintessentially 80s electro-pop band Propaganda. Whilst I don't share your love of loud shouty Germans, catching up on this thread has made me realise how long it's been since I've seen any bands (too long). Barring a few pub bands, my last proper gig was Courtney Barnett in pre-lockdown times.

I lasted half an hour in the crowd till the sciatica kicked in, so I got myself a pint and moved towards the back. Along the back wall of the venue were many men like me, leaning and clutching plastic pints. "So is this the wall of middle-aged men?" I asked and they nodded. I finally accepted that I have become one of those people my teenage self derided, the ones who hang back at the bar and just listen rather than surge to the front.

Well, unless it's really shit-kicking. I can't stand still to reggae, ska, northern soul, or old fashioned rhythm'n'blues. In those cases, it's tomorrow-me that has to worry about the back pain, 'cos fuck it, I'm dancing

Hope you had seats for The Cure! Getting on for three hours and the bar was outside the main auditorium.

Hah. Three hours of The Cure sounds like my idea of purgatory! Never could stand 'em.

Still, that's certainly value for money if they float your boat...

Well again but seen a couple of bands at the wonderful Dorothy Pax in Sheffield last week. Mik Artistik's Ego Trip was genuinely inspiring - the man is a genius and can't recommend him highly enough if you get the chance.

Then Thursday saw the new (to me, they aren't new at all) The Burning Hell, who were introduced to me a couple of months ago by a friend from work. They are similarly fantastic and the atmopshere in 'The Pax' was just amazing.

To keep with the title of the thread off to see Kirsten Hersh after far too many years in October and might pp in to a Boo Radleys (less Martin Carr but a friend tells me they are still fantastic) around then too...

I'd never heard of The Burning Hell either until last September, when Bird Queen Of Garbage Island popped up on my Spotify Discover Weekly. Now they seem to be everywhere.

Jeff Walker is an absolute bellend.
Good looking tour though, some small venues should give great atmosphere. Be interested to know how the gig goes - hope you have a great time.

Yeah. If the tiniest bit of the allegations is true, he deserves to go to prison.

Just read up on that. I agree, if true, the guy is a scumbag and should go to prison.

Barbarians?

Mine is pretty good at pointing me in the direction of new stuff I like...or old songs I'd forgotten about. The other week, for example, it played me Love Your Money by Daisy Chainsaw, a brilliant song that I hadn't thought about in maybe 30 years.

Funnily enough Spotify has started playing that to me a lot at the moment as well?!?

You'll want to catch up with Queen Adreena if you havent heard the marvellous Katie Jane Garside in 30 years - throw in some Ruby Throat while you're there!

Narrowly managing to post this before the gig instead of after, but I'm going to this tonight:

Last July + Meg Lee Chin + Sex Bandit + Oogan + Guru Honey Badger (https://www.wegottickets.com/event/583758/) at the Dublin Castle, Camden.

I had no idea Meg Lee Chin was still a going concern. Love her album Piece and Love.

I'll tell you something, I'd be very happy if I was as energetic as Meg is at the age of 63 (leaving aside that I'm below fifty and not as energetic at the moment...)

It was absolutely mental. Carcass were loud as hell and the same goes for the first band , Conjurer, who I'd never listened to before but the impressed me so much I bought an album.

Highlight of the night was bumping into 'Barney' from Napalm Death!

Nice and nice pic! I caved and went to see Carcass here in Brum in the end. I'm not hugely sold on their newer stuff but still a really great set. I deliberately missed Conjurer - saw them in London supporting Obituary and they were absolutely appalling!
I went down to Camden for Jungle Rot this week. Drokk, it was hot. There was some onstage petulance over a mic that de-energised the second half of the set a little, but still a fantastic show: wall to wall old school DM.
