Title: Middle English...early 1990's...2000ad
Post by: EddieHitler on 06 August, 2019, 04:01:08 PM
I'm sure I have asked about this before but does anybody remember the children's education programme Middle English which in the early part of the 1990's featured an episode about a boy visiting the offices of 2000ad to see how an edition of the prog was put together.

I have the transmission date written down on the side of one of my old VHS tapes but recorded it over when Batman was screened that Xmas.

Just wondered if anyone had a copy or knew where I could view this or even remember it?

Thank you

Don't know about Middle English but I do know that there's a clip from the BBC's Artifax that has a similar setup...

...and while looking for 2000ad-based Middle English episodes, I found mention of an episode which featured a photoshoot for one of Eagle's Doomlord stories.

Somebody really needs to put more of this stuff online.

Presumably, the reason the uploader of that video had their finger hovering over the REC button was that the Nerve Centre of prog 813 (Dec 1992) mentions a visit from the CBBC show Artifax and even helpfully provides the transmission date:

Aren't Bishop, Burton and McKenzie handsome? Doubt it's Middle English, but I have another visit to the Nerve Centre on VHS, although I remember the clip being so brief it would hardly merit a Youtubing.

The one bit of interest was a quick rummage through those plan chests where Tharg McBurton hid all the strips that were too fantastic to actually print in the comic, but the only art visible was this Mike Hadley (https://i.imgur.com/t3sOm0t.png) page from Indigo Prime spin-off Fervent & Lobe's spin-off strip, Almaranda (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=droid&page=thrills&Comic=2000AD&Field=Artist&choice=mikeh).

It was def Middle English.  The boy is reading a copy of Starlord issue dated 30th September 1978 the one with the monster on the front and he is accompanied by the owner of a comic shop possibly Skinny Melinks and he talks to the editor of 2000ad at that time and it was def early 1990's.

I must look for the tape as it has the transmission date on it.

have we got a video now? Lol

I have been Eddie Hitler for some time but not the real Eddie Hitler lol I love Bottom......well you know what I mean......lol

Ps It was earlier than 1992...I think.....I'm sure of it!

Time to hunt the video tape me thinks....

Also remember This Morning paying a visit to Stateside Comics and 'doing a piece' in the studio about how much some of the more desirable comics were worth.....

Was that the one downstairs in the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street?  Unusual for a TV programme to visit a comic shop other than Forbidden Planet (FP still sell comics, before anyone piipes up).

Had a very quick search to find out if any of those guests went on to work in comics - doesn't look like it, though one of the doubters does appear to have stayed in the spotlight as a dancer, model and pro wrestler! Layla El-Barrami (https://prowrestling.fandom.com/wiki/Layla_El)!

Still my favourite opening line of any Star Wars movie, especially if read as Eddie Hitler, rather than (ahem) Capt. Edrison Peavey:

"We've caught them in the middle of their evacuation".

Helen, Margo and Oli remind me why I was an angry youth!

I thought Margot was lovely. She was brought onto Hartbeat to raise the glamour levels once the thrill of Tony's cravats was beginning to fade.

I remember some 2000ad collaboration with an Irish kids' show called Anything Goes, though I remember it more from a feature in a Sci-Fi special than the programme itself.

Said programme, by the way, was truly awful, as was painfully clear to any kid like me who was lucky enough to have 'the channels' (ie the British ones).
