Prog / Prog 1577 Covering Fire
10 March, 2008, 12:35:21 PM
Oh dear - the first fumble since Christmas. Goddard on Savage is a simply mimicking what went before and frankly I don't care. Dredd is meh, Dead Eyes - too soon to say - Stickleback I need to read it again.

Megazine / 1572 Mega Cities NIGHT MAYOR
04 February, 2008, 10:32:15 AM
Quick one this time.

A big "reveal" in Kingdom
Interesting developments in Dredd. Does this tie in with information gleaned from the Previews for the next lot of Megazines I wonder?

Not read the rest yet.

Not liking the cover much though.

Prog / PROG 1570 - Get Whet
21 January, 2008, 12:08:31 PM
The joys of getting progs delivered to work..

Details to follow but the lunacy in Shakara continues, although a holding episode Kingdom remains intriguing.

The cover is quality. How Elson has developed as a 'droid is astonishing.

First time I've done one of these so be gentle with me

Cover - The Galaxy's Greatest Comic tag line stays - although as per usual it's obscured. This time with a fairly stock Cliff Robinson Strontium Dog pose.

Dredd - Last progs Dredd was always going to be a tough act to follow. So this slight Alan Grant story about the return of a charactor I can't remember does even come close to matching it. David Roach's smooth if (something I've always thought) cumbersome art does nothing for me.

Shakara - Henry Flint at the top of his game. Still not sure where the story is going but frankly I don't care.

Kingdom - mmm not sure. Elson is superb as always but the last couple of pages don't really inspire me to think that there's much of a story - Perhaps the strange game of fetch suggests there's something more going on.

Stickleback - Wow! We get the set up and the reveal of the (seemingly at least) the villain of the piece. D'Isreali? Whatever Tharg is feeding him at the moment is really paying dividends.

Strontium Dog - Dunno about this. The setup seems run of the mill and Ezquerra's artwork seems to hark back to a bygone age. Still you never know.

A step down from last progs greatness, But Stickleback, Shakara and Kingdom show promising signs.

Help! / 2000AD Classic T-Shirts
22 April, 2007, 09:39:42 PM
Quick question. How big is the XL? Now I've loads of t-shirts and some XL shirts seem to be designed for people that are 7ft and weigh 30st (A Gerry Armstrong T-shirt I bought from 365 fits me twice over). On the other hand some size L are clearly designed for people slimmer that your average size zero model (I'm thinking a of MASH shirt I bought)

So what do you reckon given that I'm 5'9 with a beer gut (hey I'm not alone here surely)

Don't agree with the misty eyed view that 2000ad isn't as good as it was during the "golden years" but an interesting article anyway

Just wondering. If not can I suggest that they are collected and reprinted. I'm particularly thinking about the stories from the '81 and '82. The 1982 Annual has probably the best Dredd artwork ever and it would be great to see it in all it's glory. It would also be nice to see this without the fear of the pages falling out - a trick all three copies I had did.

General / Judge Dredd - Movie Question?
26 May, 2005, 03:33:17 AM
Here we go - opening that can of worms that we can't leave alone for more than 2 months at a time.

Something that puzzles me about it (okay there is a lot that puzzles me about it..)why in the opening titles don't John Wagner and Carlos Esquerra get a "created by" credit? Okay it's at the end - but if someone can get a credit for designing the "Judge Dredd Armor (sic)" (which is a moot point anyway) why didn't Wagner and Esquerra?

Another question - is it really 10 years ago. Christ on a bike I can't be that old......

General / Dredd Logo
28 August, 2004, 02:54:31 PM
Just reading prog 1404 and a thought struck me. Whatever happened to the classic Dredd logo with the Judges profile in the J and the badge for the U? Looking at the one that features in current progs - well to be honest it's neither one thing or the other.

I say bring back the classic Dredd logo - okay updated it with a badge that reflects the way it is currently drawn. It's a piece of Dredd iconography that should be returned

Astonishing - take one iconic tv show - remove all that made it iconic graft on Spy Kids and then complain when it flops.

Sounds familiar doesn't it???

News / Cronenberg to direct Wagner Comic Movie?
15 February, 2004, 04:09:44 AM
if this has been discussed before apologies but thought you might be interested in this from My Movie.net

COMIC BOOK ADAPTATION NEXT FOR CRONENBERG
14 February 2004
The notoriously weird and wonderful director David Cronenberg has found a new project to divert his remarkable imagination in graphic novel "A History of Violence."

The first in the Paradox Mystery line of books published by Paradox Press/DC Comics and written by "Judge Dredd" creator John Wagner, "A History of Violence" follows the upheaval in an ordinary family?s life when the father is suddenly thrown into the spotlight after he kills someone in self?defence. As national attention focuses on the seemingly average Dad, his previously unknown past is uncovered.

But the "eXistenz" director won?t be the first to bring one of the books in the Paradox Mystery series to the big screen: Sam Mendes and Tom Hanks beat him to it last year by adapting the second book in the series "Road to Perdition."

General / Raising the dead...has it worked?
04 February, 2004, 03:28:24 AM
Of late there has been a wholescale plundering of the tooths past charactors - ones that have long since been consigned to the great thrill power vaults that still do doubt remain in Kings Reach Tower. I have to be honest and say I've found these comebacks to be - well a tad (okay a very) disappointing - yes there is a certain fanboy thrill in seeing Robo Hunter / Strontium Dog / The Vc's / Rogue Trooper (er maybe not) etc back in the comic. But do they measure up to the originals? In my view they don't. Okay this could be misty eyed nostalgia  for the good old days but I don't think it is - When Robo Hunter et al were canned they were canned for a reason - that they had completely worn thin or the story was told - so why bring them back? Was there really a fan clamour for more Rogue Trooper? Was Tharg innudated for the continuing adventures of the VC's? Do we really want Bill Savage back (the Satanus thing in the Meg fills me with dread as to how bad Savage could be...)

The only one of these that has worked was Judge Koburn in the Meg (and then it wasn't "Major Easy" though) - Perhaps this is the way to go - the Rat Pack in Dredd perhaps?
