Title: Christmas Telly?
Post by: Proudhuff on 04 December, 2018, 03:21:42 PM
Anything worth watching this year?
I tried looking up the schedules/magazines but they seem to be filled with pointless celebs  :-\

It's a shame that top class Christmas telly isn't a thing any more - probably because you can find great stuff anytime now. Back in the day it was the only time you'd get great recent(ish) films and the rest of the year was so crap, this period felt like... well, Christmas . We used to get the double-size Radio Times (which was BBC only back then) and TV Times at Christmas only and the family would spend ages marking out their must-sees.

I haven't got a scooby what's on this year - scheduled TV is dying

If you like a ghost story this time of year, there's a one-off half hour spooky tale called The Dead Room on Christmas Eve, BBC 4, written by Mark Gatiss and starring Simon Callow.

If it doesn't have that fucking awful song in it, it'll have one up on the old version.

Another take on TV scheduling of times gone past...

They'd put some half decent stuff on in the summer months, to try to tempt people back inside instead of spending their days getting fresh air outside.

During the late autumn, winter and early (wet) spring they'd bung on all the stuff they couldn't face scheduling during the summer, knowing they had a captive audience.

Come christmas, they'd suddenly remember there were competing channels and rush to make a grab for all those viewers.

From the sounds of it, things have changed a bit since then?

That is very welcome news indeed.
I thought 2013's The Tractate Middoth was the last time we'd ever get A ghost Story for Christmas.

Same. Those bumper Radio Times were a sure sign the school holidays were just around the corner. VHS rentals gradually killed the thrill of the big Christmas Day movie (although I relied on a Christmas taping of Back to the Future for many years before buying a proper version), and nowadays, everyone throws their gifted DVD's into the mix and we decide between us what'll be the best thing to watch while the food goes down.

Oh no - I got that you were talking about a programme called Orville, which had gone into its second series - it's just the only Orvilles I'm aware of are the green duck that couldn't fly and the USA brothers who could!

There's got to be at least one Star wars film on though, right?  It's not Xmas without a Star Wars film.

Back in the day it was only the thought of watching ESB that got me through the festive season.  And Raiders.

When I say in work 'it's not Xmas unless Star Wars is involved somehow' they look at me blankly.  For the youngsters its all about how much tat they can get for their cash.  The true meaning of Xmas (ie our lord and saviour Ben Kenobi) has truly been lost.

Surprised they could raise the budget for a second season- McFarlane's hair and teeth alone cost the same as 26 episodes of Voyager.

*Glad to hear that its back, I quite enjoyed the first season.

A proper one? not a Scientology one?... I've been listening to this on Audible and enjoying the unabridgedness (word?) of it.

Meantime... looks like there's not much else (Black Mirror aside)unless Netflix is holding out on us  >:(

Have to say I'm with your colleagues here. Don't remember Star Wars being a notable part of Christmas telly (obviously it was a key component of Christmas presents right up until I was oh, 43.)

And let's be honest, Christmas telly has always been crap. Yes, you used to get a couple of decent films but at the price of all your favourite normal programmes being displaced by Festive Shite for ten days. God I hate Christmas University Challenge.

Pointless Celebrities is fine because it's the only quiz show that doesn't seem to water things down compared to the normal version.

I hate watered down celebrity versions of quizzes. On Celebrity Mastermind, Mylene Klass's specialist subject was 'Sex In The City - Season 2'!

I was surprised as she's not an airhead by any means.

Did teaser adverts like this not send you into a frenzy of excitement in the days leading up to Xmas?

https://youtu.be/uq60Mj51nw4

Yep, and Star Wars toys. Every Xmas since the release of the first film. Not nativity toys, not baby Jesus toys - Star Wars toys.

Xmas is about Star Wars. :D

Otherwise, yes - TV at Xmas is pants. But that was ok when all three films had come out, and TV stations were fighting between them about when to show Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. Best Xmasses ever!!!  :D

The Betamax copy of Star Wars I taped off the telly* featured the old STV logo with a bit of holly in the corner of the picture that flashed up to signify adverts were about to happen/had just happened.

Don't think anyone at Cowcaddens thought Wookies were especially Christmassy; the two big channels just rinsed the hell out of any films they bought and they saved the newest/biggest ones for Christmas. For around six or seven years**, a Star Wars film would have qualified as at least one of those.

* Which we watched 120 times - official!

** As TordelBack's discussed a few times, by around 1990, Star Wars was old hat. Couldn't give the shit away. It took a conversation with one of my brother's friends - the first hardcore Star Wars fan I ever knew - to make me realise it was actually a great film, rather than just another stupid thing I remembered fondly from a time when I couldn't be completely trusted to go to the toilet by myself. That and Alan Martin's memorable re-christening of the slacker demographic as Generation X-Wing, in Planet Swerve, positing that George Lucas had at least as much influence on the developing psychology of our 3-year-old selves as Kurt Cobain had on our 16-year-old selves.

I certainly associate Raiders with Christmas TV, but not Star Wars.  I'm sure I would have received Palitoy / Kenner toys for christmas, but the earliest presents I can recall right now are a computer-compatible tape player, the 1985 2000AD and Judge Dredd annuals and the Titan editions of the Ballad of Halo Jones (not all in the same year).

I have never seen the Star Wars holiday special, apart from clips. I didnt even know about it back in the day.

(Oh, I never saw the two Ewoks films either, although I do remember reading about the first in a magazine.)

From what I've read, that may be a good thing. But ... I'm still curious.

I wanted to see Caravan of Courage when it came out (though don't think it actually made it to any cinema I could have gone to).  In the decades since I've seen the Holiday Special and both Ewok films.  Possibly worth seeing.  Once.  And never again.

I'd quite go for that lineup this year!  Clambake is a great Elvis (secret shame: I love Elvis movies), we could have Christmas Dinner during the Holiday Special (never again), then Just William, out for a stroll during Rod'n'Dusty and back in time for Dick Barton and Cartoons, then boardgames, cans and a snooze until Only When I Laugh, which I loved ("I am H-A-P-P-Y, I am H-A-P-P-Y, I know I am, I'm sure I am, I am H-A-P-P, H-A-P-P...").

Ah for a whole day to play with my Imperial Troop Transporter behind the couch... "There's one, set for stun!".

It really did. Amazing piece of kit though - could carry at least 9 figures (depending on how many you jammed in the back, but still rather more than I had at the time...), opening doors, swivelling turret and so many sounds!  Albeit largely unintelligible.  If only it had been in the bloody movie!
