Title: Enniskillen Comic Fest 2017
Post by: Tony Angelino on 22 January, 2017, 10:23:41 PM
http://lewstringer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/dare-you-enter-castle-of-comic-creators.html

Any fellow Norn Iron dwellers should be interested in this one as both John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra are on the list of guests. I've never met either and find it hard to justify the cost of travelling to London etc for a convention.

Of course if you do live in Northern Ireland you are probably thinking "Enniskillen? That's miles away!".

I went to last years one, and it was shite. So cheap and nasty.
Whoever organised it couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

Who ever is trolling as Judgedreddrocks, could he crawl back under his fucking bridge.

Last years Enniskillen comicon was an amazing experience.  It focussed on comics and the interaction betwen creators and their public audience. It was locally organized by a truly dedicated bunch of people and this was well reflected in the positive buzz so many of us brought away from it.

This years convention is in the castle and has a plethora of writers and artists attending.  I assure everyone reading this and who is minded to attend, that they will have a fabulous time in the company of others like themselves who are here for the love of the medium.

I call you out on this Judgedreddrocks, you were clearly never at the convention....frankly you sound like some asinine wee prick with a personal axe to grind.  I'll not have the people who spent limitless time, love, money and effort in organising both last years wonderful convention and this years potentially even better one, be held up to public ridicule by you or any other nasty fucking pond life. Very tempted by this. Enniskillen is a grand town in a beautiful part of the world,  and I've never met even one of the Terrible Two. Must ruminate.

And always inclined to believe ZenArcade over most folk!

Zen,
I don't have an axe to grind. It just wasn't up to the standard of Belfast Comic Con.

If you don't have an ax to grind, you'd be well advised to fucking think before you start traducing people I know and respect on a public forum.
I have a fair idea who you are and you should piss the fuck off somewhere else and stop slandering good, well meaning decent people. Z

I just didn't like it, my kids didn't like it. It took ages to get there, and wasn't in the one convention hall, as other conventions usually are.
As for knowing me....good for you, cause I don't know you, and I'm glad!

Just so you know Zen, I'm not being hateful towards you. I've reported you to the moderators as your attitude is just nasty. Your attack seems to be pretty personal towards me. All I had a problem with was the event, but you had to make it personal between me and you.

You report all you want, this thread will hopefully be taken down and Tony can repost on the Enniskillen convention....the next time around you'd do well to keep the fuck away from posting on it.  Got that? Z

Post by: ZenArcade on 29 January, 2017, 02:07:19 PM
They aren't threats. They are a fairly tempered and apt reply to something that has reemerged from under a stone in order to crap on the excellent work of love and care currently being done by the Enniskillen organisers.  You're still banned by the way. Z

Title: Re: Enniskillen Comic Fest 2017
Post by: ZenArcade on 29 January, 2017, 02:59:58 PM
Having paid proper heed to Bolt-01's request, i would urge all with an interest in purely comic orientated conventions to pop down to Enniskillen this year.

There are a large number of writers and artists in attendance.  The panels held last year were hugely entertaining and served as a vehicle for both creators of international repute and local young writers and artists to engage and expand the audiences appreciation of the medium.

Last year people from all over Ireland and further afield converged on Enniskillen: old acquaintances were reaffirmed and new friendships were crafted in a delightfully convivial atmosphere. There were plans made for new enterprises, one of which is our new Belfast 2000ad forum which meets monthly (parts of it weekly) and has a broad church membership of local readers and creators, very much in keeping with what we took from Enniskillen last year.

We have plans to come to Enniskillen and produce a graphic/written piece of work as a gift to the Enniskillen organisers in true appreciation of what they are so successfully achieving.  So in summation ignore the negativity and come down/up/across to a fun, friendly gathering in beautiful surroundings. Pubs, restaurants, places to stay abound and are most affordable....and you never know, it mightn't even rain this year. Z

I'm hoping to make it down this year - would really like to support a local effort, never mind meeting The Big Two on home turf!
Title: Re: Enniskillen Comic Fest 2017
Post by: pauljholden on 29 January, 2017, 10:49:40 PM
It's a shame Judgedreddrocks didn't enjoy the enniskillen con, clearly didn't work for him (or his kids). Conventions are funny things, they all have different flavours and I've never known any convention to be the same thing twice.

"It took ages to get there" is a rather weird complaint though, which would have rather more to do with where JDR was based than where the convention was and I wish he'd led with the post about him and his kids not enjoying it because then at least you could address that and learn from it, rather than going straight for the jugular clearly riling up friends of the con.

Conventions like Enniskillin are not run for-profit (often they're run for a loss), they're usually run by fans for fans (and in the hometown of the fans who run them), they try and improve every single time they're on. Learning valuable lessons from each show, but they're not trying to be the Belfast Comic Con

And a note on that. There are two Belfast "Comic-Cons" the MCM Comic Con and the Belfast Film and Comic Con, run by different companies, run for profit and vast things that often have only a nominal amount of comic book guests - in fact, as a local comic artist, you'd think I'd be a shoe in for a table, and managed to get invited to both cons in their first year, not a peep in the second and despite actually asking if I could pop along being told in no uncertain terms that well.. The film and comic con doesn't really have any sort of comic presence and I'd be the token comic artist... if I still wanted to come along. I declined.

MCM have at least an artists table section and I know a few artists come along to that. Personally, I don't enjoy these things and so rarely if ever do them, and writers never go to them at all.

As it happens the Enniskillen con has a lot more in common with brit comic conventions of old, rather than the Monstrous cash extractors of MCM Belfast or the Belfast Film and Comic Con, less movie spectacle and more comics and the comic guests are actually treated as guests (rather than some appendix to the main event tolerated in order to validly use the words "comic-con" in the title) so we tend to be that little more laid back, happy to chat and you're far more likely to see a writer there as a result.

I hope you give it another chance, I don't think it's unreasonable to give anything or anyone another chance.

On that note, what do you think they could do to improve the experience for the kids?

-PJ

Enniskillen Comic Fest 2016 was a real throwback to a time when conventions were all about comics rather than being overgrown toy-shops.  Really looking forward to this year's event.  Here is a link to the Splank! blog which covers the fest and a few other things going on in the Irish Comics scene.

Setting my sights on this one now. While I would dearly love to meet the great MacNeil, an artist who the MegaCollection has  now convinced me is second only to the Squirrel himself in overall contribution to the Dreddverse (yes, even more than McMahon, Cam Kennedy and Ron Smith), I'm interested enough in the whole idea of the convention that his absence isn't going to put me off. And if I could slide a copy of The Amazing Maze Dumoir in front of Q Twerk for his signature and a chance to tell him how much that, errr, strip meant to me in less enlightened times, well that would be very cool.

Hmmmm. Generally I don't have much interest in conventions (and I do realise that is not the done thing around here, sorry), but freaking Wagner and Ezquerra in driving distance from my home? I very probably will, thank you.

Have to say that was a great day (and night) out! From what I heard there were somewhere in the region of 1000 through the door so hopefully that counts as a success for the organisers and it'll continue.

It was interesting having the creators split between several buildings and it meant it never felt too crowded, apart from the understandibly long, long queue for Carlos - he was slaughtered all day but was gracious to the last. It was between him and Fabry for my last sketch and I went for Carlos - I was literally the last person to get a sketch, but I think he kept signing. An absolute gent and every bit the legend.

I was a bit star struck by John Wagner and maybe babbled a bit to him and Alan Grant, but hey, these fellas are heroes!

Got an absolute belter of a Death sketch from Eoin Coveney, a Blackblood from a hungover Clint Langley, a top Dredd from the charming PJ Holden and Durham Red from King Carlos - my sketchbook has finally begun.

It was a real pleasure to meet the Sector House 13 crowd and marvel at their cos play, and David and Joe Soap (again) - sorry we didn't get a pint or two together fellas, hopefully next time.

Think Zen Arcade may have some copies of the fanzine still available for anyone who's interested, it was great to see them selling well.

Till next year then...

Fantastic weather; fantastic creators; fantastic fans; fantastic Strontium Dog. Fan film; fantastic 'refreshments '.
Many new friends made; many fanzine sales and as Michael says I really am annoyed we didn't catch Joe and Mary and David later at
the pub(s).  I'm sure the stellar gallery of creators et al kept them both in the craic.
We'll post on the forum soon about the fanzine and where you can get your copy....we were delighted by the reaction to it and hope it brings fun and a smile to people's faces. Z

I had a really fun day, great chat and pints with Joe Soap and Mike Carroll, and as they say chatted briefly to Zen and Mikey, missed them in the pub.
Had a long chat with Steve McManus, Clint Langley, Dan Cornwell, Alan Hebden, and briefly to Cam Kennedy and John Wagner and several small pressers, very impressed with some of the all age material produced by them.
The only problem was not enough time to get around to all of the great guests.
