Title: 2000 AD-related 3D models...
Post by: Mike Carroll on 16 February, 2007, 03:58:24 AM
I decided it was about time I showed off some of the 3D models I've put together over the past few years...

In a blatant attempt to also pimp some of my books, the link below is part of my website for my New Heroes series.

Aside from vanity, one of the other reasons I'm putting the pics on-line is because I'm looking for suggestions for other 2000 AD-based models. (I'm toying with the idea of tackling the ABC Warriors, but I don't think I'm quite up to such a mammoth task yet!)

It's a graphics-intensive page, so dial-up users beware!

You're welcome, Jock. It's a great cover!

> isnt the LandRaider the coolest toy ever?

Definitely! I could never afford one when I was a kid, but I bought one on eBay a couple of years ago. It's very bashed-up (doesn't even have the tank threads), but I still love it!

Shame that they never released a Judge Dredd version. Ohh, there's an idea for Termight Replicas...

There's a bloody good idea!

Soner or later I'll pick up a Land Raider, too, and leave it on my dust-gathering shelf...

Nice work, Mike, BTW.

I'm currently using version 6 of Cinema 4D. I got it free with a cover disc years ago. One day - when I'm rich - I'll buy the latest version... Probably.

I'm still looking for suggestions as to what to model next (though Carlos Sanchez Robo-Stogie is very high on the list).

Sticking with the Dredd thing how about a Manta?

Or a Blitzspear?

Yeah, do the Blitzspear!
Title: Re: 2000 AD-related 3D models........
Post by: Mike Carroll on 19 February, 2007, 12:39:02 AM
A Manta would be great, but there's never been a really definitive version, as far as I recall.

So maybe a Blitzspear is on the cards! There's more than one version of that, too, but I'm thinking specifically of the one on the cover of The Complete Nemesis, volume 1.

Here's the Blitzspear so far... And probably about as far as I'm going to take it! I got seriously fed up trying to figure out the colours and all the little fiddly bits: it seems like every time Mr O'Neill draws a Blitzspear he changes it!

It's a canopy fitted over the hole in the original creature.

So it is a window once it's been broken in and embalmed in metal.

Steve, get in touch if you want the Ro-Jaws model, or any of the others.

In fact, anyone who wants them can have them: the files and accompanying textures are pretty big so I won't be putting them on-line, but I've got lots of blank CD-Roms...

All I ask in return is to be credited if they're used. Oh, and I also everyone to buy my books. And I want unlimited power. And a sandwich.

Hi Mike,

cheers - I love your Land Raider, brings back memories...

I use 3DS Max.

In fact, you might find this thread useful - does Cinema4D have a smooth feature where you can work on a lower polygon mesh, and then subdivide it so it is smoother.

This thread (and it's long and a bit of a ramble) talks about the best way to model so it looks good if you subdivide it afterwards.

It's mainly useful for mechanical stuff, but it really helped when it comes to modeling that way.

Cheers,

Steve

Sorry, Wils... I don't even know how to do that! But I can give you the 3D file if you like.

That's ok. I haven't got anything that'll open it at the mo, for a start!

I've got redrawing the logos as vectors on my list of things to do, actually. A few years ago, I redrew the Robin Smith Dredd badge and it's been used of some of the character profile pages. Unfortunately, I've lost the bloody EPS files now, so can't do any more. I can't remember if I sent them to any other boarder, but I suppose I could always redo it. Perhaps some of us could get together and come up with some kind of 2000ad resource for these kind of things?

I've done some Rogue stuff, which turned out ok, and am yet to finish off redrawing the proper Dredd logo. As well as redrawing the original, I'm also attempting an updated version as well. Although I've no idea how it's going to be when it's finished, so far the 'J' has turned out better than I expected, at least. :)

Steve,

Thanks for the link - I don't even know what some of these guys are talking about... I can see that I've still got a lot to learn about modelling!

> does Cinema4D have a smooth feature where you can work on a lower polygon mesh, and then subdivide it so it is smoother.

I'm sure that the more recent versions have a mesh snoother, but I can't find anything like that in version 6! I've been using it on and off for a couple of years now, but it's only in the past month that I've been spending serious time on it.

3DS Max looks the business, but it's way out of my price league!

Cheers,
Mike
Title: Re: 2000 AD-related 3D models........
Post by: Steve Green on 24 February, 2007, 05:40:36 PM
Ah, there's always stuff to learn.

Looking around, it might be called HyperNURBS in C4D if it's there at all.

Yeah, Max is expensive - although if you're doing lots of paid work with it, then it pays for itself soon enough.

That said, Softimage XSI have a good range of packages from the Foundation version for a few hundred quid upward.

Cheers,

Steve

Looking at Mike's models of Walter and Ro-Jaws, you have to be struck by how plausible the design of both robots seems.  Wouldn't be at all surprised to find a Walter-alike dispensing coffee at a service station forecourt before my days are up.   McWild's animation of RoJaws also has a disturbingly realistic Segway vibe to his motion.

Here's the same thing with much nicer rendering: 3D motion blurring... It looks almost identical to the first version, but it took ten times as long to render. If I have to suffer through that then so do you.

The file is about 1.3mb (twice the size of the previous version).

That's great Mike - shame the motion blur takes so long...

Maybe you could try reducing the shutter to reduce the blur slightly and see if there are options to reduce the samples used? I've never used C4D but most programmes let you reduce the quality to speed it up.

I really appreciate seeing head of Tharg.

Thanks for acting on my request. Good show. I owe you one, there.

BTW, the Justice City One and both animations of Marlon 'Chopper' Shakespeare flying towards me at break neck speed is a sight to behold.

Mind you.........

Could you possibly mix those with soud samples?

I mean with the Judge Jet and Marlon whooshing towards you.

With the first, I would imagine the sound of a Harrier Jump Jet taking off.

With the second, I would imagine the sound of mega city babble and traffic. The sound of wind blowing fast at the high alttitudes and then whoosh with some sort of doppler effect.

I got some movie sound effects CD's. ( For radio plays.) I could ripp some sound samples off for you, though I'm not sure if vailating copyrigth protections. Then again, I guess thats what the CD is meant for.

 Being used.

Thanks for the link, ThryllSeekyr!

You're right - sound makes a huge difference, even to tiny clips like this! I usually find sound harder to get right than graphics, which is why I always leave it to the end!

But I'll try to set aside some time to add sound to these clips (I might even steal some Mega-City One sound effects from the Big Finish CDs!)

Mike

Thanks guys!

Thryllseekyr, you're right. The Blitzspear should be a lot faster, but that was about as fast as I could get it and still have it visible: the explosion in the background was culled many years back from a movie (stolen frame-by-frame using my DVD software's "capture a single frame very slowly" function). If I'd chosen to use a different background, I could have moved the camera along with the Blitzspear (like I did with the Chopper clip).

I'm going to have a go at creating some Termight-like tunnels along which the Blitzspear can travel at a great speed - should be fun!

Cheers,
Mike

I need some feedback!

The past few days I've been pottering around with my Judge's Helmet model and I'm getting closer to something that isn't entirely rubbish... But no matter how much I tinker with it, it never looks quite right (of course, it doesn't help that every artist draws it differently...).

At the moment it looks pretty good from the side, but I'm not happy with the front and three-quarter views.

Any suggestions on how to make it better would be much appreciated!

Hi Mike,

I think it's maybe the scale of the visor, the gap between the inverted V and the side the helmet, maybe make the whole helmet a bit narrower from the front view.

Good start though.

I was just wondering which Joe Dredd you are basing this one on.

It does look good, though there is something not quite right about the face.

Perhaps the mouth needs to be little bigger. There mayb e room for few more character lines.
Though I'm not tryiing knock your design, just offering alittle constructive critism.

Considering it's Mike's 3D model of a Judge's helmet, I'd hazard a guess at "none".

Guys, thanks for the feedback... Here's the modified helmet, with which I'm a lot happier! I've reduced the "standoutyness" of the red parts, pulled the edges of the face plate closer to the centre, and darkened the blue bits a little.

I still need to fix where the respirator meets the top of the helmet, but that's a relatively easy job.

I dread to think just how difficult the 3-D modelling would be to do, i find it hard enough just to draw stuff.

Steve Dillon used to draw his helmets like that too. The top line of the red stripe is still in line with the top edge of the nose piece - it's just that the line is narrower so the lower edge is different.

Thanks you all for your kind words! I'm not a great artist or modeller - I know there are people on this board who could do this better and in less half the time, but I think I've got it right now (well, as right as I want it to be!).

For the "nose bits" in the centre I decided to match Wake's judge helmet, so they're now a continuation of the "eyebrow bits".

I've also increased the size of the gold part of the respirator, also to match's Wake's version.

The second last picture of Judge Dred is near perfect.

Except the upper lip looks way too narrow,

The mouth could be abit smaller,

The chin could be alittle more pointy and jutt out more.

Otherwise it's a pretty good render.

I was also wondering if bothat picture  of Judge Dred and Johhnny Alpha were based on real life models?

People you know.

Was there a Judge Dredd action figure like that back then ordi you just make that one up?

More grea twork, Mike.  The crease in the corner of the packaging is pure genius.

On the excellent Johnny head, it's worth noting that the boss on the front of his helmet is a vid-camera, complete with removable slugs- so some form of aperture and hinge-line would work well as detail.

Unbelievably great suff - great Living Axe accessory, lovely touch with the peg-holes intact/removed!

Aren't they supposed to be nose guards, like on a Spartan helmet.

Well yeah, but their position in many, many versions would seem to partly block the wearers vision - which I imagine many real-world noseguards do too, but must be unacceptable for a judge.  Hence the suspicion that they may be transparent from the inside.

Heh! I thought it would be a nice touch if it looked as though the toys were designed by someone who didn't quite "get" the comic... Hence Dredd's lack of elbow pads and proper gloves.

And did anyone notice what's in Tharg's left hand?

Thanks for the kind words, guys... I've been toying with the idea of adding to the line-up: MACH One, Bill Savage and Earl Regan (from Flesh) are the obvious additions.

But they're a little more tricky to create because of the clothing (it's easier to fake skin-tight costumes than loose-fitting clothing) and because they're not instantly recognisable.

I want to restrict the line-up to only characters that appeared in 1977 (so nothing after prog 45).
That does give us quite a few great characters, though: Mr Monday, Rok, the Mekon, and the two-headed guy from Dan Dare whose name I don't remember, Hitman, Bear, Call-me-Kenneth, Walter the Wobot, Dredd in his Lunar Marshall outfit, a whole bunch of Harlem Heroes (pretty easy to do now that I have Giant), Claw Carver, Silk (from Invasion)...

But the one who absolutely has to be done is the Harlem Heroes's arch enemy Artie Gruber!

Now if only there was some way to turn them from 3d models on the PC into real toys that we can play with...

That is a thing of beauty! If I had a hat on, I'd take it off to you. I look forward to seeing it with all the finished details. How long did it take you?

The only teeny tiny suggestion would be that the forehead's a little tall - Hammerstein has never been what you'd call a thinker and he just looks a bit too cerebral - but if you shrunk the forehead, the whole head may look too small, so what do I know? :)
Title: Re: 2000 AD-related 3D models...
Post by: TordelBack on 28 November, 2008, 10:34:10 PM
Outstanding!  In any future revisions remember that Hammerstein has three little lights in his belly, secondary arm mounts at the base of his ribs, and odd little laser things on top of his hips.  No-one else does.

it blows my feeble old fashioned brain that you guys can do this stuff, I fantasize about being able to put characters in 3D so I can then move them around anatomically correctly to use for 2D references... but would have an aneurysm at one glance at the software required.

Are these all Zbrush, Woolly?  I really fancy getting Zbrush myself, but it means either investing in a new Mac, or a PC that I'll only use for Zbrush.

They look great, by the way.

Post by: Woolly on 17 December, 2008, 08:29:15 PM
Mainly using 3DS Max Design, but with the help of Zbrush every now and then for a more 'clay-like' approach to the modelling.

If your worried about the performance of Zbrush on a low-end Pc - dont!
Due to the incredibly small program size (30 megs or so!) I can happily work on a model with a million polys on my 5 year old PC (1GB memory, old GForce graphics card, single 2.2 processor), which in comparison would make 3DS Max fall flat on its arse and run out of memory.

If nothing else its a great, fun, yet incredibly powerful program to play on and i couldnt recommend it more!

Follow this for a gallery of Zbrush stuff....  :)

Z-Brush is fun but they do need to read the book on designing interfaces. It took me ages just to find where to save things as it's not intuitive at all.

I've tried ZBrush 3. I will say that the video tutorials on the Pixologic site are very good, much better than  the downloadable in-line help.
With those tutorials it would have become very frustrating very quickly but, there again, I have little patience.

I attempted  a Ukko in Spore.......

Before the full game was released just using the Creature Creator....

And last night with the full game using the clothing option that available at Civilisation stage...

It's actaulley standing up in all of these pictures, though the application of parts of clothing might have some poeple thinking otherwise.

Oh, I was really aiming for the Leprehaun theme however inaccurate it may be for Ukko.

As Spore just doesn't have anything more specific.

As for the colouring, it's difficult, as you just can't colour the diffrent part indicidually, you have a choice betwent stripey, poker dot pattarns, just are that uneven patches of colur of your choice.

Which is why it has shades of green ( from it's clothing.) and yellow ( From it's hair.) on it's face.

Then again, when your painting a vechile or building this isn't such a problem.

I don't know what the creators of Spore meant by placing such a uneven set of restrictions in this game.

About Ace Garp sans clothing.

Mike Carroll reassures us that.......

QuoteDon't worry - he's not naked. He's wearing socks).

Were you hinting about what Jim Carrey used to do on SNL. I remebr his um sock segment.

Despite some other similarities,

I thought there was touch of Steve Martin inthat image. Partically with his facial expression.

I based the pose on an Ezquerra sketch over at www.200oad.org (http://www.200oad.org) (//http://www.2000ad.org/functions/image.php?Comic=artwork&choice=Ezquerra_Gronk) which, incidentally, doesn't feature the Gronk's full complement of arms, so I decided to stick with just the two.

I completely agree: I'm currently re-reading 2000AD from the beginning, and the Spacefort is the least interesting of all the ships in Dan Dare. I constructed the Eagle model ages ago...

... but most of Mr Gibbons' designs from the strip are excellent, and I've added quite a few of them to my "must do" list. The Crusader in particular is a beautiful ship, so that'll probably be next up!

Mike Carroll pointed me this way, I'm teaching myself Blender and I've currently got a Ro-Jaws in progress, will post pics when he's a bit more than just a green blob :D

Introduction time: My name's Mark, age thirty-mumble, living in Leeds where I work as a web-monkey and coder. I started on 2000AD back at prog 7 IIRC, drifted away in the mid 80s though. (The thrill suckers got to me I guess lol.)

So yeah, hi.

Hello Mark, and welcome.

I'm at work so can't see any pictures on this thread- so I don't even know why I'm looking at it!

Hello Mark, that's coming along nicely.

Welcome to the board.

You're damn lucky to have a mentor of Mike's calibre to look to for advice.

Actually, rather than repeatedly posting, I'll post the link: http://www.markfiend.com/images/index.php?folder=rojaws (http://www.markfiend.com/images/index.php?folder=rojaws)

If anyone's interested, you can keep up with my progress there. :geek:

That's coming along brilliantly!

I quite like seeing things develop on this thread, but often don't bother following links. Just let us know when there's a significant development and I'll look in.

Thanks Dan (If I can call you Dan? )
Anyhoo, I've made the teeth look even more manky: rust toward the points and greenish grime at the "gums". Head temporarily removed to show teeth in full disgusto-mode

Link as previous post.

I found a great UV painting tutorial here (//http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=46&t=373024&page=1)

That's Mr Dontdare to you!

Nice teeth. I took a peek at that tutorial but when I read sentences like:
"After laying out a good set of UV's (in this case nothing but a planar map) I render an ambient occlusion pass inside 3DSMAX.
all I actually hear is:
After laying out a good set of rhubarb (in this nothing but a rhubarb rhubarb) I rhubarb a rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb inside the rhubarb

I'm glad there are people like you and Mike Carroll out there who know how to make pretty things to entertain the likes of me, but it means nowt to me - may as well be witchcraft!

It's shameless self-pimping time again!

The finished version of the Judge Dredd Belt Buckle is now available from http://www.termight.co.uk/ (http://www.termight.co.uk/) - order one right now! - but for those interested in such things, here's the final 3D model:

And there's lots more 2000 AD 3D stuff on my website - http:/www.michaelowencarroll.com (http://www.michaelowencarroll.com) - for your perusal!

Coming to this a bit late - but had to say nice job. I knew when I joined the site there would be people into the same sort of thing as I am, but there looks like a lot of fellow 3D user too - great!!  ;D

Resurrecting this thread 'cos it's more ecologically friendly to reuse an old thing than to discard it and create a new one...

Great stuff Mike. Working in education, I have access to Autodesk programs including Maya and 3ds Max, both of which I've tried out. I've also experimented with the horrible-to-learn blender and it's all way to complex and non-intuitive to use that I've pretty much given up on it all. As a result people who can do this stuff are like wizards to me and it really impresses me no end.

I can make a disc out of a sphere in wings3d

Dog - I've checked out Blender a couple of times... it really is incredibly confusing! I'm using Cinema 4D version 10. It's a few years out-of-date but I've never found anything else that's as powerful AND as easy to use. One day, when I'm rich, I'll upgrade to the latest version...
