Title: Judge Dredd: Toxic
Post by: sheridan on 30 August, 2018, 12:21:05 AM
No, not a crossover with the early 1990s British anthology comic, this is IDW's latest stab at the lawman.

Full-page ad at the back of Judge Dredd: Under Siege says it's by Paul Jenkins, Marco Castillo and Mark Buckingham.  My guess is it'll be a miniseries along Under Siege lines, rather than the longer-running IDW JD series...

What I would love is a crossover with The Toxic Avenger.

IDW wasting no time releasing this mini, she lands next Wednesday.
Have to admit, I like this series-of-mini-series approach.
Easy to jump on / off, and a chance to try out new creative teams on old Joe.

Paul Jenkins is an interesting choice. One of the few Brit comic book writers that didn't cut their teeth with The Galaxy's Greatest, I've enjoyed his work previously.
This guy can turn The Inhumans into a compelling read ffs.

Now if only they could've managed to get Mark Buckingham on the interior art....

Shame they don't seem to be as good as putting out decent ongoing series...

Seems to me that they're adapting their approach precisely because the last two ongoing series didn't do too well.

OK, to counteract my moans over on the Prog thread, I'm bumping this - Just got part two and it's a bit of a travesty that we arent discussing this at least as much as the prog - for my money, shave off  a few seemingly inherent USA Dredd errors (supercillious Dredd being the most glaring) this has been vastly more entertaining than the progs.

Some really good ideas here that actually explore some modern issues - the importance of immigrant workers chiefly.  Add in some xenophobia and some scenes were you really feel the tensions are running dangerously out of control, with Dredd precariously stuck in the middle in a way that feels refreshing and dramatic.

I think if this had been edited by Matt Smith and the continuity/USA offness issues filed off, it could stand as the best non Wagner Dredd I've read for a good while.

The art is decent as well - still has a few of those  seemingly USA inherent issues with how teh City and the Judges look, but also gave me a bit of a Colin Wilson vibe this issue.

Ha! I couldn't have a more polarised view than Leigh right now. I'm adoring the Prog and thing The Small House has been superb. While as I discussed briefly over in the Comicbook day Megathread I'm finding this very sub-par.

Gotta love the diversity in opinions that 2000ad positively encourages.

When isn't Dredd supercilious?

Yeah.

I picked up the first two issues on the back of a points redemption scheme my LCS (the ever wonderful Big Bang Comics) was previously running.
The points system seem to have been scrapped. I won't be bothering with the remaining two issues.

Despite my enthusiasm for this, you might be right! Part Three really lost the plot for me, literally, as the stroy takes all kinds of turns to throw me off.
