My god, there are some creative types about. The only ones you get round here are giant snow boulders, shabby snow lumps, and snowcocks completely lacking in artistry.

But the Doctor's mother is human...

Actually, among the few good things to come out of the RTD era is a suitable retcon to explain away the half-human guff from the Movie - it was a Chameleon Arch problem thingy that caused him to seem half-human for some convoluted reason.

Of course, now you have to acknowledge the existence of the Chameleon Arch instead of pretending it was a bad dream.

Just got back from a-viewing of it, and it's exactly like you'd imagine a Guy Richie Sherlock Holmes film to be, ie lots of shootin', fightin' and talkin' but with "you slaaag" replaced with "you caaaad". Still, enjoyable fun all round.

Also, Robert Downey Jr plays the same eccentric genius he plays in everything, so if you like that you won't be too disappointed, even if he is totally gay for Jude Law.

For what it's worth- I can see the faults in RTD's Who- but to me, they are no worse than the many faults in old Who.

You may be right. I think where Nu Who often falls down is that its writers (mostly RTD, others have been guilty of same) seem to be trying to get the same level of plot, character development and such out of one 45-minute episode that the old series would stretch out over ninety minutes at least and it all just comes out rushed. That and the failure to provide internally consistent science.

Pure pish!!! at least with Star trek you get some good solid science behind each episode not this mumbo jumbo.

Dunno what Star Trek you've been watching.

QuoteTom Baker just wasn't TRYING back in Logopolis

This made me laugh. The rest of SBT's post made me cry.

Though having made my earlier gushing statement, I've just watched the DVD of Remembrance of the Daleks, which still shat all over New Who.

Since the TARDIS has been all blown up, is it too much to hope that it will be broken again like in the old days and he won't have a clue where he's going?

You know what, I absolutely loved every minute of that, even the bits which I should have sworn at the telly about. Full credit to RTD for pulling off a new angle on the regeneration kerjigger and thinking about what regeneration must feel like for the outgoing incarnation.

Sure RTD Who has had its faults, so many faults, but this was a nice send-off, and it's a good reminder that he did put in all that effort to bring back this show we all love so much and hand over that love for a new generation to discover. I know I've torn New Who apart on many an occasion, but it's a better world with it in. Looking forward to what Moffat and Smith will do with the show.

I'm not high, by the way.

Games / Re: PC Dredd vs Death on Steam for £1.19 (31/12)

Steam's sale is chuffing lovely. I picked up both Max Payne games, both Freedom Forces (ah! would that there had been a third!) and KOTOR for less than a tenner. Happy days.

That was just as groovy as the first half, and most enjoyable. The following two things didn't ruin my enjoyment in any way, though they are headscratchers:

1) If I understand it correctly, the plan to defeat the Triffids was apparently to make sterile ones, and then have them breed so that the sterility spread. Eh?

2) Where did that teenage girl get a flippin' Sten and a crapload of ammo anyway?

I thought that was mothershitting terrific, especially Eddie fucking Izzard. In fact, it was so tosswanking good I had to add all these nobcheesing expletives into my post.

Cunting yeah.

Complete toss as it was (particularly the Obama circle-jerk for no good reason), the reappearance of the Time Lords gives me a glimmer of soon-to-be-dashed hope that next week they'll decide to erase from history the past four series and reset Earth back to being like the real one.

That trailer looks friggin' tasty indeed. Looking forward to this immensely.

QuoteWas the thing about the psychic twins and the quest for the world's foremost Triffid expert (who's coincidentally the lead character's estranged father) from some sort of sequel to the original novel?  I only read the first one and the new stuff is slightly at odds with what I recall.

It's been quite a while since I read it, but I seem to recall the main character being a Triffid expert in the novel. That's why he was in the hospital at the time of the storm; because one of them stung his face.
