Title: Future Shock (etc)Submissions
Post by: Mardroid on 05 June, 2008, 02:23:49 PM
Hi,

I read the guidelines on this site concerning submission, but there are still a couple of things I am not too clear about.

I understand a writers submission essentially involves sending in a script and 1 page synopsis, the script being read if the synopsis is liked.

However, if the writer already has an artist available already, (i.e. like 2 mates teaming up, or the writer doing the art him/herself) is it acceptable to send in the artwork with the script?  Or should that be treated as a separate application and hence sent in separately bearing in mind stories are bought from writers, but artists are employed?

Concerning artist submissions- I understand they tend to be based around essentially sending in a few pages of pencils (and/or inked work) based on 2000 AD characters, the artists own interpretation of one of the scripts available. I was wondering if a future shock would also qualify for this too since the characters are original.

Apologies if there is a specific thread for this. I did do a search but nothing came up.

If you're submitting a script DO NOT send artwork. You're only wasting the time of the artist involved. (Unless you're Alan Moore and he's Dave Gibbons).

Only pre-established art teams get the opportunity to double pitch.

If you're submitting artwork - I'd stick with characters that already exist in 2000AD - such as Sin Dex, Dredd, Dante or Rogue (and even then, I'd probably stick with Dredd). The idea, I think, is to quickly see if the artist is someone who can draw in a '2000AD house style' (which is a pretty open book, but you can instantly tell when something ISN'T 2000AD art style, usually it's too American)

Hope that clarifies it. Though, having said that, it's only my opinion.

What PJ says. You might also try joining the Yahoo Scriptdroids or Artdroids groups - lots of handy tips and info there:

Thanks guys. Basically I've written a couple of scripts.  I have a friend who is interested in doing the art, that's why I was wondering if it was worth sending it all in together.

Judging from the answers here, I won't do that. I'll just send in the script and synopsis and see what happens. I don't have a problem with other artists doing it, just thought I'd give my friend first choice, if that makes sense. (I'll inform them and they can choose the conventional way of applying for artists, if they so choose. Who knows they might end up doing it anyway if the editor likes their Dredd art.)

I will check out those links as well.
