Almost two years after filming began. Lots of post production time, that might be a good thing.

September 2012?

Shit, I'll have run out of helmet jokes long before then.

Anyone ask the obvious questions:
1. Why so fucking long? and
2. I want it now now NOW!!

I realise the second one isn't, technically, a question, but...

Aw man, I'm doing a half day today and now I'm going to go home and cry.
And masturbate, but that's about something else.

In all candor, excitement is not the emotion I got from the post.

I'm not going to be a whiney bitch about it though (I've already done that), thanks for the update and nice to have a firm release date.

Well, there's lots of good news with this announcement:

The first half of any year leading up to Memorial Day (The traditional start of summer blockbuster season) in Hollywood is where the studios send their movies to die. That is, movies they have no idea how to market or movies they think are going to fucking tank. Think the likes of Green Hornet, Priest, The Rite, The Adjustment Bureau, Battle: Los Angeles. That this is being released on the tail-end of the summer season, and avoiding the summer's big-guns, means they must have some faith in what they've got.

Of course, the shit news is we have to wait over a year to see it now...

Now that I'm parked up I can say that the release date has made me happy. Mainly as I was worried that it may happen over the weekend of Hi-Ex and that would be BAD.
As said in the above post, it is now well away from the Marvel/DC films that are coming out and so won't get lost in all the hype that comes with them.
I do think the title of this thread should have been the release date as a few forum members may feel cheated, thinking teaser trailer, Anderson pics, etc...

Still, a few of us all nighters enjoyed the torture of waiting for Molch-R to say his second post!

I shall now have to sort out some leave over that period, just so I can enjoy the telly build up   ;)

Pretty surprised the Dredd release date is so far into 2012, but this is a good thing, hopefully means the visual effects- and by that, read as MEGA-CITY ONE- and the 3-D are both going to be top-notch.  The bad thing is we're unlikely to see a teaser trailer anytime this year, hope y'all have a lot of coffee on hand, we're in for the long haul on this one...

At least they are not rushing it so the SFX will be up to scratch.
Gonna be about 10 months before we get a trailer though i bet.
Title: Re: Stay tuned, earthlets - exciting Dredd movie news ...
Post by: TordelBack on 22 July, 2011, 06:56:59 AM
That certainly explains the drip-feed of publicity so far.  Good to get a date, but more than a year, oh my heartses, won't somebody think of the obsessives?  Hopefully this is a positive thing, based on extended post-production and clever scheduling.

Too much to hope for a Christmas teaser trailer, maybe?  In the meantime, I think I'll be avoiding this thread for a while...

That may not be the reason at all though, they'll only spend the time on FX that their budget was allocated for unless they got more money. It may be just a scheduling decision to avoid all the big films released during the first two quarters and just before 3D box-office singularity 'THE HOBBIT'. Warners just put back the Man of Steel to Summer 2013 to avoid all the other 2012 men-in-tights flicks.

Well, that of course sounds far off, but sensibly avoids spider-mania, batmadness and hobbit-irritation. So we can expect a teaser trailer 14/9/12 then i take it?
But no, at least now we have a firm release date*

SBT

*subject to change, of course.

Over a year to wait but that will give them plenty of time to prepare a marketing campaign plus polish up the special effects. :)

Trouble is according to the Mayan calender the World ends on 21st of December 2012 so we'll only have a few months of Dredding before the Apocalypse boys ride into town.   :-\

At least Judge Minty will be out before it (hopefully)!

And there's more time to save up for a sudden flood of merchandise.

And... ummmm ... more 3D screens around (maybe!) to show it on, leading to more profit?

Its opening weekend competition is Sony's Hotel Transylvania, a CGI Adam Sandler flick in 3D, which may be competing for 3D screens.

I dunno, it's temping fate, what with the ageing readership - doubt half of us will be here next September - Commando Forces and Proudhuff already look halfway to the knacker's yard!

I'd rather they took their time and made it great rather than rush out some half baked turd. At least if it is rubbish it'll be fully baked. And it won't be, it'll be gem. You heard it here first.

That does sound like utter bollocks.

Why release it in a small territory, allow it to get pirated (or even an official DVD release) and kill its US Box Office entirely?

Makes no sense. Even stinkers don't get US theatrical releases nine fucking months later. Dredd could have a stubbly baby by then!

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say Lionsgate probably wouldn't have left such a vital piece of information out of their official press release...

Almost two years from when it started filming.

This strikes me as a bit odd and does not bode well.

Excitement levels have now dropped quite a bit.

Straight to DVD perhaps?

What I'm on about is that post production on a movie usually doesn't take 18 months to complete.

A film sitting on the shelf is a film losing money. I'd have expected it to be out on DVD by next September.

Films that are delayed in release are usually delayed because the studio doesn't have faith in the film.

Actually that's the average amount of time for a genre SCI-FI film.

Talk about jumping to conclusions. The 18 months ain't about post-production, it's a non-argument.

Unfortunately/fortunately 2012 happens to be the biggest year for genre/comic adaptations in film history out-the-gate almost from Jan/Feb with Star Wars 3D, Ghost Rider, Wrath of the Titans & John Carter, right through the Summer with Avengers, Batman 3, Prometheus, Star-Trek 2, Spider-Man, Bourne Legacy, Total Recall, G.I. Joe 2.

The Hobbit, Django Unchained, Bond 23, Halloween 3D, Twilight, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D all pencilled for the Nov/Dec.

September is the only real window for Dredd that doesn't have BIG competition unless you count Looper, Resident Evil or the Expendables 2.

The only possible reason for such a long wait is - that there actually is no film. It's all an elaorate hoax and you guys are falling for it.

Yes, when a "film" takes a long time to release like this it always means that said "film" doesn't actually exist. Dre3d will actually turn out to be some sort of new fragrance for men or something. This would explain all the pictures of cars and why Karl Urban has so much stubble in the official photo.

MARK MY WORDS - THERE IS NO FILM.

Well if it's bad it's bad and there's nowt we can do about it.

John Wagner,   Judge Dredd's Co creator  seemed pretty positive about what he'd seen on the Films set so surely that's something to consider. No idea what he's said recently since I will never have a twitter or Farcebook account. Any gossip about the Movie either good or bad tends to get reported here on the threads pretty quickly so the Intel hub will report any mis givings if or when they come out.

This sums it up very well, timing is everything. As for you Buddy think of it like releasing your beloved pet (project) into the wild, you wouldn't release into a dark wood full of wolves who would rip your beloved pet into little blooded shredded pieces now would you , no?No ,you would release it in open clear fields ,where it could run, run free , run Forest run ..erm sorry wrong film -but you get my point  :D

Oh Good grief people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

John Carter Of Mars finished shooting before Dredd even started filming- its been in post for nearly over two years.
Batman was only a few months behind Dredd too, and its a month or so ahead of Dredd's release- but then its got much more $$ to push it through the mill faster .

The fact that its release date is set for September is in no way a sign of anything to do with its quality or predicted success- as has been clearly stated before- its the sign that the studio WANT it to do well and as such have moved it out of the 1 week wonder summer blockbusters and into a much more competitive time slot, thus giving it far more chances or being a financial success. The film is quite a small production compared to the likes of Batman etc, and to even think it has a chance of grabbing bill boards, TV slots and the like along with the promo spent behind Batman is pretty silly- it cant compete with that amount of promo and would just get lost.

People need to stop being so defeatest...... :o

Think Star Trek's back to Xmas 2012, Joe. No script yet.

Still 2012 though, a full year.

If 18 months post production is the average amount of time for a genre SCI-FI film don't expect Star Trek 2 until well into 2013.

I never said 18 months post-production is the average amount of time for a SCI-Fi film. As I said Post-production ain't the issue. The Amazing Spider-man aint too far off the Dredd production/release time-frame either -won't be out till next July, it started filming last December- but that has a higher budget and larger resources plus would you rather them release Dredd to go up against Spider-man in July/August?

I don't see the point using whatever new info is released about this film as an excuse to beat it -especially something like a release date- or that every decision that is made is an indication that it's badly made and that it hasn't a chance especially since none of us know, there's no reason in that...or maybe you just want it to fail.

Chill, people. The film will be as good as the team can make it.

If it turns out to be awesome, I'll be a very happy squaxx.

If not, I've still got a bajillion back-issues and TPBs within easy reach and no shortage of new comics to keep me going.

I don't think anyone can say with absolute confidence the release date is because it's the best slot in 2012. No-one here knows how long Dredd's post production has taken.

The filming ended in February. Assuming post production started in March, how long would that take? Let's take an uneducated guess of six months maximum to add the soundtrack, the audio, the CGI effects, to do the editing, and any modification of the 3D effect. The film would be almost complete around August plus any extra time added to do trailers, posters and other promotional stuff - interviews for magazines, perhaps a promotional website. Let's say the film is totally complete by September or October. That means there's an eleven or twelve month gap before the film's release.

The problem with a September release is kid go back to school, teenagers go back to college, university. The mindset could be "summer's over, I'm less inclined to go to the cinema."  This may explain why there's a big drop in September's box office.

A spring release could have been better? Maybe. It's not the same as the summer season when the big budget films are out but April is the last month before the first big releases in May. April may have been the best month for its release?

The long gap could be because Lionsgate have seen the rough cut and not been impressed. It's possible. That may not be the reason but nobody knows why the film has got such a long post production period. Perhaps the film is a stinker or perhaps it's going to wow people in the September slot? Who knows.

It's not a kids film though, it'll  be R-rated in the States and 15/18 in Ireland & UK. It's a genre film for an older audience and September is a better time to release a film like that after a Summer of popcorn. I'm surprised Prometheus is scheduled for June though there will be both PG13 and R-rated cuts of the film to be viewed by Warners and that may change the release date.

Spring is similar to Autumn but Dredd has more competition in Spring with John Carter, Star Wars 3D, Ghost Rider etc.

That wouldn't really explain the September release though and I don't think they'd be be willing to throw a load more money to fix anything like that, they'd more likely just finish and release it. There'd still be time anyway to address reshoots if the release was next Spring. All indications from the crew are that the shoot, at least, went well.

I know District 9 took two and a half years to produce but the shoot started in Spring 2008 and it was released in August 2009. Not too far shy of Dredd and D9 was released in a less jam-packed year for genre films. The director had all ready tested the waters with the short 'Alive in Jo'burg'. Not sure if the Stallone Dredd is particularly comparable.

Here's a small glint of hope to ease the pain away of another year waiting for DREDD. A New Scientist feature states someone has built a working time machine.

SBT

The Stallone Judge Dredd movie began filming in July 1994 and finally wrapped in late January 1995- I remember the time frame well as I was avidly following it's progress at the time- with the completed movie released in North America on June 30th, 1995.  That means post-production looks like it only lasted for an insanely tight five months, but they could have been assembling footage and working on effects shots prior to production wrapping, I have no idea on that regard.

The new Dredd movie is being released in September 2012 so the visual effects and 3-D can be rendered to their fullest potential, and also so the distributors, Lionsgate in particular, can create an effective marketing campaign to make the wider audience aware and interested in the movie in the immediate months leading up to release- and I for one am glad they seem to be taking their time with this, do we really want a re-run of 1995...?
