Talking with Locustsofdeath the other day, we thought it would be a good idea if we tried our hand at a new comic, trying to capture the flavour of the 70s Marvel comics like Tomb of Dracula and the 80s comic, Scream!
Now we can't do it all ourselves (well we could but we don't want to) so this is where you all come in.
Any writers out there care to contribute short one-off terror tales, or episodes of six to eight pages (which would basically work as stand alone adventures) for a recurring character?
Any small press artists want to join in? Any budding Alfredo Alcala or Gene Colans out there? We need strip artists and pin-up artists.
And if there is anyone willing to create the title logo that would be fantastic too!
Email or PM me (or Locust) if any of this appeals and we'll let you have more details.
You could also let us know what you think of the idea - would you buy a copy? We want to know if everybody else is as keen on the idea as we are!!
Email sent :D
Well, as a both a profound Scream! fan and a shameless self-touting writer-whore, I would happily both read and write for such a publication. Yes.
WRITERS: there are two types of scripts we are going for.
1. One-off Terror Tales from 1-4 pages. Must be self-contained, beginning, middle and end, with a considerable twist. Send your completed script.
2. Scripts that will contain recurring characters. These characters will feature in self-contained 6 or 8 page scripts. We do not want scripts for these quite yet - what we want are descriptions of your character and his world, his ambitions, goals, motivations. Bad guy or good guys or anti-heroes or anti-villains. If we like your idea, we'll ask for scripts.
Absolutely no sci-fi - this is a pure horror mag. Monsters of all kinds are allowed, but we want gothic horror along the lines of Tales of the Zombie, Tomb of Dracula, EC horror comics and scream. All we ask for are original takes on horror themes. You want to do zombies, yeah cool, right on, but please do not give us the usual rundown of cliches. Vampires, same thing, but give us something different.
Cheers guys. I look forward to hearing from you.
Bagsy be in it.
ARTISTS: We are also on the look out for covers, pinups and illos for features. We could also use a logo designed!
WRITERS 2: Every mag will have a write-up or two on gothic horror, be it comics, literature or movies. For example, issue 1 will see a write-up on mummy films by Davey, and the history of Scream! by maryanddavid. Interviews are also welcome.
We are shooting to have the first issue released Halloween 2012.
Cheers

There were, you just have to slog through a lot to get to them. I have an inexplicable fondness for the film... much like 'Burial Ground', it's got
something...
Originality? Pah! Throws away script for Druffy the vampire slater.
Have a idea for this just need to get my story into script form. Very intreated :)
I'd be interested in doing some arty stuff for this. Follow the weblink on my profile to see my portfolio.

Lovely work, DoomBot - would love to have you on board.
That IS a great idea, for sure. I'll dig out some horror stuff I've got in the backyard and send you a script.
By the way, there's a friend of mine who'd like to have a go at the logo. Is there a name or any idea yet?
If nothing else this has sent me on a fabulous nerd-google gawping at Tomb of Dracula's art. Absolutely astounding stuff.
Thanks for the fantastic response so far chaps! Everyone who has volunteered their services - we'd love to have you all involved! I'll get back to you all individually tomorrow with more detail - cheers!
I'm sure to have a horror script or two festering in the vaults somewhere.

I'll mull it over and see what i can come up with.
and as usual if u guys need any design work or letters give us a shout sure.
I'd like to do something for this too
Chimp, Johnny - be delighted to have you both on board.
Writers - we are already receiving reams of Terror Tales. Bear in mind that the magazine will be focused on its recurring characters; only one Terror Tale will appear in each issue. Figure that this is going to be a quarterly mag at first, so your TT has either got to be arsom (because we've already got several arsom scripts in the mail) or it may sit unpublished for a while.
We'd like to see more characters. This is an opportunity for you to do a bit of world-building.
i'm on it like a car bonnet

Prof, you've still got my email address, right? If not, potential contributors can send scripts or portfolios to
locustsofdeath@googlemail.com (I'll let Davey decide if he wants to put his email address up here.
I'm up for doing something for this - will get cracking!
Of course you realise I am 100% Game On for this. Would be more interested in the recurring character deal than the Terror Tales. Will have to get the old thinking cap on though. Nevertheless, consider me on board.
Just e-mailed LoD. I'm up for this.

Right guys - lots of submissions so far, and several good ones.
We need monsters. Good monsters, bad monsters. Monsters.
We have some surprise contributors as well. I'd like to mention then right now, but...oh, you guys are going to be floored. The interest in this has been great.
Yup - the talent rosta interested in this has been amazing - I don't know whether to skip around the room in excitement or just swear at the screen like a tourettes sufferer watching porn.
We have most of the line up for the first issue worked out, but that doesn't mean stop the ideas coming - there's still one story space up for grabs!
ive got some ideas for this. i best get cracking

And the Terror Tale for the first issue hasn't yet been decided, though we've got several very strong submissions for it!
I've sent a script to Davey but I'd also quite like to draw something too. Thing is, I'm about to start something quite large (30+ pages for next bristol) so I'd like to volunteer for a short script if there are any.
Cheers

Did you get the mail I sent locusts?
Ate, Van Dom - did you not get my response? If not, I'll get you back today!
I've sent an email to Dave and one to Locusts - did they get through?
I might be interested in doing something for a later issue of this, but right now Hallowscream (http://www.backfromthedepths.co.uk/thetheatreofterror/2011/news/hallowscream-submission-deadlines/) takes precedence, (which is more about the terror tales than the recurring characters).

We'll take submissions - both series pitches and Terror Tales scripts - through Hallowe'en night for the first issue. And then comes the difficult task of sorting through everything and arguing our favorites. Thanks everyone for the interest so far!
Ah, recurring character sent! See if I can work on a Terror Tale over the week. Do you need a synopsis or a full script for this?
I'm interested, I'll get cracking on a reccuring character story
:)
One question though, I may have just not read any of Locust's posts properly, but is this going to be a publication we see on the shelves, or an online mag?

Oh I'm sure, I just wanted to check that I hadn't dropped the ball at some point, no rush on getting back to me as it sounds like you're run off your feet.
Also, I shall be sending you my recurring character story within the next week I should imagine, would you like a synopsis and first 5 page instalment? That is if the instalments are five pages, or just the sypnopsis?
Cheers again
:)
Synopsis only at this point - and whatever other materials you feel we'll need. Characters designs, details on the characters and his world, ect. Remember, character stories will be self-contained 8-pagers. There can be an overall arc, but the first episodes, while the mag is new, must be absolutely self-contained so that a new reader can jump on at any point.
Okie dokie, I'll jump into the ideas pool and start something :)
Sent Locust a concept, however I forgot to put a subject in my haste, I hope you'll excuse the mishap

Did some one say Horror Comic? Count me in. Got a few story arcs which should fit the bill.
Not hijacking this project but don't forget Hallowscream (http://www.hallowscream.net) is always on the lookout for horror scripts and strips. We got plenty of story submissions for the 2011 issue but there's still time for any artists who want to draw a story from the scripts we already have. Hey guys. I'm about finished my October deadlines, so I offer my sequential artistry... um, abilities. And not, obviously, my grammatical artistry, abilities.
Cheers, Davey, will go and sort that now. I thought Locust might be up to his wotsits with the move,
October 31st is the deadline for submissions! At that time Davey and I will gather everything we've got and make our selections - that's right, as of this moment nothing is set in stone. Lots of great ideas so far, however; we can easily make a great mag out of what we've got!
p.s. Please, no more Lovecraftian scripts; we've got enough of those piled up to sink R'lyeh next time the stars are right.
Four more days to halloween, halloween, halloween.
Four more days to halloween and that's the deadline!
Get your submissions in by the weekend folks - there's still time to wow us!
Ooh! After having given up on this, I've just had a brainwave about a good character. Are there any arty types out there willing to do a sketch of something before Monday? If so, PM me. If not, well it'll just need to be a written thing I send off. Bah.

THAT'S IT -submissions closed!
Huge thanks to everyone who offered their services and talents. Locusts and I will start sifting through the offerings and let y'all know who are the lucky ones very shortly.
UPDATE: Davey and I have selected MOST of the winning submissions for the magazine - but have no fear if you've not heard from us yet, as we're going to decided on a "second wave" of stories that'll start up as the first wave finishes...we have a few tasty treat in store for you lot, promise.
Gentlemen! The first issue is almost decided upon!
However, we would like to include a 3 or 4 panel droid life-like horror-comedy/comedy-horror strip in each issue - anyone any ideas? (Scripts only please - this is something I want to draw :))

Strong characters. We need strong characters. Think about Droid Life - such a short strip but all those droids are unique and we have really gotten to know them. That's what we need! Now get writing!
So when are you guys going to choose and match up artists to scripts? Or have you done that already? :-\

We will also have two terror tales (scripts now with the artists) and a story called Dark Alliances by Dave Withers (currently doing a slight re-write and yet to have an artist assigned)
Not to mention a 3 panel comedy strip and text pieces on Scream comic and Mummy films!
But we won't tell you the title of the mag until we have the logo designed...
Has that whetted your appetite?
Davey forgot that there's also the ICE CREAM MAN in the first issue!
That's:
El Bigote by Locust and El Chivo.
Last Road to the Backwoods by Emperor and Mygrimmbrother.
The Major by DodeC and Proudhuff.
Ice Cream Man by Van Dom and Uncle Fester.

Hey, that's a lot of stuff. Eager to see what comes out of this!!
Just wanted to update everyone on this - we're rolling. Several strips have already been drawn, and they look great. Others are in production. We look to remain in target for a release sometime in October-November (one of those chilly, autumn months for atmosphere).
I'd like to get one more strip going, one that would kick in issue 2. Again, it needs to be horror, and it should feature a great character. Please contact me if you have any ideas, or email me a short synopsis including a character description. Self-contained episodes, but there can be an ongoing/overall story arc. 6-8 pages per epsiode, at least three episodes will need to be written before one of our artists starts on it. Thanks!
Chaps!
The juggernaut is rolling and stories are coming in! :)
We still hope to have this out in time for a Halloween launch
Can the creatives involved give me a quick PM to let me know how you are getting on with your contribution - first issue is only a couple of months away!

(*tut* I don't know, these artists who decide to take on paid work instead )
but that means we have moved a one-off story up from issue 2 to take it's place and may have more room for more pin ups - how are they coming along chaps? Anyone finished theirs and not sent it in yet?

I've got a marvellous script that needs a marvellous artist to draw it in the style of Misty comic or House of Hammer's Van Helsing Terror Tales
Anyone willing to take on a six pager for the next issue of this fantastic horror comic, AAIIEEE!!!?
I find my passion reignited for this project and I'm looking for contributors to the next issue of AAIIEEE!!! the horror anthology :)
The first issue was a loving tribute to Scream! comic, the second to Amicus films of the 60's and 70's.
This new issue will honour the fantastic 70's magazine Hammer House of Horror, created by Dez Skinn.
If you want to contribute, get in touch! :) :) :) :)
ARTIST NEEDED for a six pager in the style of Misty comic. Any volunteers?
