Just saw this over at CBR and thought it looked a bit... well silly... which given that its about a 50 foot gorilla is a bit daft but it was all so ... over the top. Then the reveal and by gosh have they lost their sense of scale!

Mind wait until you start the King Arthur thread Goaty - now that looked just plain gash!

I wonder would he has been made that big due to the supposed Kong vs Godzilla movie that is supposed to come out? Simply so that they are of a similar scale from the outset. Otherwise a movie watching Kong bite Godzilla kneecaps may not be as exciting??

Surely Sam Jackson has enough money by now? Doe he really need to do stuff like this? He comes across as a lovely guy, but  he clearly just shows up and plays the same character in every film: it's a cool character admittedly, but he's entering Sean Connery territory at this point... Anyway, Skull Island looks potentially entertaining, even though I rewatched the Willis O'Brien Kong with the kids last week and it blew me away as always. You can never have enough Kong.

Yeah, that.

Although pretty sure the 2014 Godzilla is still twice the size at least, so I'm guessing they'd have to scale him down a bit.

I thought it looked entertainingly silly, with a real Lovecraftian vibe to the giant skeleton and giant bloody handprint, as well as a wee touch of Evangelion.

This film will either be so bad it's good or so bad it's bad!

The comics been surprisingly good, though it does have quite a disconnect with the film.

Has no-one seen this yet?

I utterly, utterly loved Kong. Lots of problems with script (lots of "But.. [character] you're [character's background details we don't know] and [bit of exposition to move us along]!") and many of the characters could've been more interesting / fleshed out, but I was grinning from ear to ear through most of it (and actually burst out laughing at the audacity of some of the bits). So much of it was just stunning to look at too.

Good fun, would double-plus recommend.

(In a peculiar way reminded me of the Rock, stupid, stupid but really fun - it wouldn't for example, be that tough to imagine a world where Tom Hiddlestone's retired SAS officer is, it turns out, actually Sean Connory's disgraced former SAS/British Secret Service officer...)

Get thee to the Last Movie Watched thread!  But yes, it is a fantastically enjoyable film.

I went after someone described it as basically Death Planet, was not disappointed.

I'll gladly echo this endorsement, PJ. It's fucking awesome. Pulpy, loud, stupid, bombastic, beautiful and exciting. Most importantly, it's fun. Cast have virtually nothing to do, but they look like they're having a good time. I had written this off as of the first trailer but I was delighted to be proven wrong. Go fucking see it, you lot. Your inner twelve year old will thank you.

I was surprised what a good (and somewhat complex) story the Boom Studios comic turned out to be. Is either the comic or the movie tied into that Joe DeVito illustrated hardcover novel of 10 years ago or so?
