Side-on or facing, whatever, from memory, no referencing.
If you look at it and be honest, whose style are you biting?
I did it over the weekend, and I was very surprised to see that I appeared to be channeling Brendan McCarthy (coincidence regarding christain names, I'm sure) from c 1984, just before the wok-helmet got too absurd.
So I'm McCarthy. Who are you?
i think evidence should be submitted so the board can decide if you are more Shakey Kane than McCarthy the Master.

Heh
Well, it *was* rather rushed......
Actually, I'd be happy to, but I'm afraid the dark scanning arts etc are somewhat beyond my mortal ken.
Brett Ewins on an off day.
I've done an Ewins Dredd since I got a sketch of Skeemer from him at UKCAC years ago and learnt how to draw that THEN just added a helmet and bit of chin work and you had yourself a nice little Dredd sketch.
14 minutes 34 seconds, Wacom tablet, Pshop, sore fingers, quite rushed...
I used to copy Bolland , Ezquerra and Ewins Dredds as a nipper
It was some time before I figured out that the white circles on the helmet were light reflections

Yay!
Lovely. Er, I dunno what to say about this. The eye bit of the helmet is actually very, very early Ezquerra/ McMahon isn't it?
I always thought it was more pracical than the later "slittier" iterations, from a pure practicality POV.
Nicely Old school.

Nice chin!
Don't know who this reminds me of. Maybe you're a bit more original than I am.
And it would deffo take me a LOT longer than 15 minutes on a coputer, as opposed to a graphite pencil on white paper.
I might give it a bash later....
Cool idea!

Fab little challenge. I'd normally not take part in these sorts of 'board' drawing activities, but this was just the right kind of warm-up task to get the creative juices flowing! No idea whose Dredd this is reminiscent of though.

Steve Dillon could probably have drawn 5 pages of Dredd in 15 minutes, though.

Bill Ward. That's zackly who I was thinking of!
That great frame where Dredd's pointing his finger right at the reader and snarling something
Who's Bill Ward?
Bill Ward: Artdroid who drew one episode of Dredd 'The Mega-City 5000', set on the moon if I remember correctly. He wasn't a typical 2000ad artist if there is such a thing. I think he got off on the wrong foot with me by daring to draw the Lawmaster with skinny wheels. Er, let's say his art was a bit YMCA – lots of bearded guys in leathers. Looking on the web I see there was another US artist of the same name, but drawing on the opposite end of the scale. One would draw buxom women, the other, hairy men. I think both of them passed away years ago.

Jim has got Letratone. Looks like a retro Gibson visor.
Cheers Ctaylor - I'd be happy to be even fractionally reminding people of Colin MacNeil! Jim - thats a Dave McKean Dredd if ever I saw one.
Radiators is really cool - is that done on one of those brown bags you get the coffee in? If so, you earn double bonus points! And IAMTHESYSTEMS, as others have said, has the best snarl of all - both pretty unique.

I'd like to see a full strip with this very Euro-spaghetti-style Dredd.
Thank you for the compliment. (Although I don't know what Euro-spaghetti means!)
All I see, however, is the thin neck, head too far forward, unfinished far side of the helmet, shoulder pad too low, chain and chest too loosely defined. Also the circle should be moved more to the left, and I don't like the nose or the nasolabial folds. I've had a few more stabs since, and it's still pretty tough to get it all done in 15 mins, even with brushes and colours on "speed-dial", but of the ones I've done I think this one still has the most energy and "potential".
I'd be a LOT happier with a 30 minute time limit, but then that rather stetches the point of the exercise.
You're being too hard on yourself. I would give my left arm (or, at the very least, someone elses left arm..) to be able to draw like that!

yeah, that's a pretty good example of the artists curse right there... you might se that in your own work (all you'll probably ever see are the shortcomings) but that's not what everyone else picks up on - it looks fantastic. lovely feel and form.

Just shy of 15min- didn't get chance to ink it.
Blimey, action shot ! Very good considering the time factor. I say if your time's limited just bung down a colour in photoshop and try to think of the most recognizable trait of the character in J.D's case his chin and helmet and take it from there. I just bung the colour on top of the blue black background because it will cool it down though it looks a bit grubby. CraveNoir- it just gets better every time I see it man!
YOU CHAPS ARE IMPRESSIVE!

What I find amazing is how you're all able to include the shading in that time. No doubt that's a practice thing though.
*ahem* some of us may have spent a few minutes in a time-stretcher... I think as long as the main drawing is done in 15 mins, it's ok to spend a little extra time tidying up...
Oh, that radiator is a cheat – goes around drawing pictures on moving trains!
Haven't picked up the pencils for far too long so thought I'd have a go at this. Made a complete mess of the nose bridge.

Hi Kerrin, yeah I ve drawn Dredd before
I had tried a lot in the mid to late 90's to get a job at 2000ad and failed so I went to art college and got caught up in learning 3d and have ended up working in the games industry. Lately if been going through all my old work and really want to get back into doing more frequent comic pieces. The comp is tempting it all depends on my free time. Thanks for the welcome

Matt that is a great homosexual Dredd you drew in 15 mins.
Great take on Dredd's lid Matt. Almost like an early style one but with a later flavour round the bottom edge. I know some people prefer the smaller/slittier eye apertures in the visor on a judges helmet but in reality (and yes, I know we're not talking about reality) you'd be able to see bugger all. When you've got some futsie perp hopped up on zzizz taking pot shots at you with a blaster you're going to want to be able to see as much as possible.
Nice sketch chap.
Homosexual Dredd?!?

I like the way you picked up on a good idea of using a scrap, challenging yourself to go the extra mile. Accentuating the visor tenure bringing weight to the glass and overall gravity of the helmet. An involvement with construction further than mere design, gracefully pinpointed in the short time you had to nail it.
A paused silence on the face of Dredd not common with the lawman, and maybe a hesitancy in the skin and facial moulding from yourself. A quick get out by dashing the neck through to the shoulder, finishing in what my uneducated guess is Doherty resemblence.
Thats what I meant.
Looks more like Quentin Tarantino to me.
Is this thread still valid? What a cracking idea! I wanna do one!
Go for it Grimm. Think I might try another one as well.
lovely, if i get a chance tomorrow evening i'll have a crack. it's 15 mins just to draw it right? I mean, that doesn't include scanning and so on?
Sketched a few quick Dredds last night and today, but I can't be arsed to scan them tonight, so I'll try to upload em tomorrow. Been trawling through the entries and I'm really impressed! Talk about unsung heroes!
My favourites are as follows:
Iamthesystem - man, you can seriously draw!
Cravenoir - love the looseness of this
paddybrown - another great sketchy, craggy Dredd
Leigh Shepherd - like the man said, reminiscent of the great MacNeil indeed
Matt Timson - 15 minutes????? Wha???
Seriously, well impressed fellas. We should deffo have more little comps like this!
Pah. Tried it. No idea how to upload what I was able to complete.
Hi Eric - i make my jpegs 700pixels wide and usually 200dpi or thereabouts, upload em onto photobucket (which is pretty user friendly). Once theye are on there you can click on the image code, which copies it, then you just paste it in to your message, and it appears! I know that sounds very long winded, but if I can work it out I'm sure you will! Have a go sir!
Here's some of my attempts:

Still haven't worked out how to draw my Dredd, there are so many styles and takes on the helmet and chin! This was a bit of an experiment, each one about 5 mins:
And finally another 15 minuter:
Anyway, that's enough from me! Toodlepip.
Cool beans Grimm!
Of the Dredd head 5 minuters I like the middle top the best, kinda old school.
thank you very much sir! yeah, some were more successful than others - i think i prefer 2 & 5 out of those. anyone fancy starting a similar doodle thread?

Heh. I very much doubt there's anyone here as confuser illiterate as I am. Even so, I took the Emperor's advice because I like it dirty.
Et voila.

Good work all round. Grim's Quick Dredd #1 seems to capture the essence of our favourite future lawman in particular.

Mr Plumrose, that's brilliant. I like his teeth.

That's bloody good Eric, very accomplished sketching. You should have a bash at the art comp.

Grimm, that second 15 minuter is class. Its got a great chin / face ratio! Just what I try (less successfully) to achieve on my Dredd pics.
And Eric, thats a great take on old stony face.
Thanks very much Darren! I guess that's the dream - to achieve the perfect chin:face ratio! This is currently my favourite thread - it's quite staggering how many talented boarders there are out there.

Thanks for waking up this thread guys. There's something addictive about trying to nail the Dredd look. Good exploration of Dredd heads there, Grimm.

Superb, Surfer - what a chin!
That really reminds me of Jim Baikie's Dredd. Very cool.

Great stuff - it made me wish Tony Hart had gone "today I'm going to draw Judge Dredd using only chalk on black paper" only it is better than TH could do.
Yesssss! My favourite thread has been bumped! Truly superb work, Crave.
Blinding.
Nice work Monsieur.Noir!
Great sketch Crave, I love that visor design.
Bloody good, CraveNoir.
Nice one.
Very impressed. I know what Emperor means by mentioning the late great Tony Hart - if he'd have done a spot on Joe, this is the approach he'd have taken.

Excellent! Glad to see this thread revived! Excellent stuff as ever from CraveNoir, and I think Mr Girls is going to be one to watch in the art comps going forward ...

I be a Manga Studio man for pencils and inks, sir. Colours (not that I do much of that) are Photoshop, and lettering is Illustrator, although I have dabbled with drawing in Illustrator.

Totally unique, Rad. I like it.
I have often wondered though, would Dredd have bum fluff? He is a stickler for discipline, so other than in Cursed Earth conditions, would he somehow always find the time to shave?
Was never sure if it was McMahon's and Ezquerra's shading style's that led other artist to think that Dredd is often unshaven.
Great pic anyway.
I think he probably would have stubble after a 23 hour shift!
Seriously though, I don't tend to think about it too much - I just think it looks cool, as long as it doesn't go completely overboard.
Grimm, that's fantastic, such energy and a great choice of pov, makes him look like a suitably hulking figure without going all muscle bound.
Radiator, more damn fine goodness!

Sketches on lined paper. Now that is proper doodling. Interesting trick there Mike to sketch the cross part of the helmet. Think I'll have to try that as mine end up all over the place. That helmet design is just great - unique (i think) and very stylish - takes the classic and somehow tweaks it to look very modern, without actually changing things much. I was just about to post how that look would suit a movie Dredd, then Jock appears.... uncanny.
To be complimented by Jock on your Dredd must be like being told you're a bit grizzled by Clint Eastwood. Talk about complimentary, I don't think anyone would protest if you were to print that out A3 and plaster your walls with it.

Don't tell anyone, but that sort of thing is <whisper>
really easy</whisper> ... draw a rough silhouette in a dark colour. Sketch a bit of detail round one side in a light colour, then the other in a different light colour. You've only got two colour choices to make, and the viewer's eye fills in most of the detail for you!

Its something to do with the style of shading and the contrast between light and dark or B+W because there is no intermittent shading and like Jocks work it reminds me of the effect you get when you transfer a B+W photo onto Lithographic film.

Superb Kev, 15 minutes for a full action pose, you're just showing the rest of us up now! ;)
I think your Dredd's inproving too, here he looks tougher, there's more of a gritty hardman look, I think it's the mouth. Now go forth and ink it my son!

Stolen from/Homage to Ron Smith - I always furrow the brow on Dredd's visor - I wouldn't do that with other judges though. It's partly to differentiate him and also I think it helps with his expression.
Good stuff Kev. If Iron Man could frown, so can Dredd.

A classic Eastwood sneer elchivo! The man himself would be proud of that.
As for vzzbox you got the colouring pretty much right particularly on the right hand front facing Dredd. The orangy skin tone is the perfect complimentary colour of the Blue helmet! 8)

Top work guys, glad to see this thread revived again.
Been meaning to try a different look for Dredd's helmet (oo-err!) so I thought I'd give it a go.
Pencils only took about seven minutes:
So I decided to ink them ... which tool quite a bit longer than the remaining eight minutes, so I stuck the result up on my dA page instead. Click here (http://jimcampbell.deviantart.com/art/Dredd-Head-Shot-150847809) for inks.
Cheers!
Jim
very nice Jim!
Hi. First post!
This took just under twenty minutes what with the inking and all. I might need to try again, and give Dredd a bit less of a pointy chin...
Looking good Shetland. Yeah, you might wanna up the chin to visor ratio, but I really like how you've inked the visor itself, really unusual (In a brilliant way)

And yes, he's *much* easier to draw in profile ;)

Love your work in general, Radiator.
Great shouty/yodeling Dredd there, Mygrimm.
Love the Dredds through the ages, Radiator. I always liked flashback scene's to show Dredd as he appeared back then. Whenever done, it has tended to have been a bit half hearted. I think only Ron Smith showed Dredd in a flashback scene as he appeared drawn by early Ezquerra/McMahon. Not sure about the top left one though : )

Now I'm not really an artist type but a couple of things inspired this one being a doodle I did in a meeting, second the way Mybrothergrimm was drawing the lighting on Dredd's visor and third a determination to draw Dredd doing something other than stirring.
Anyway I'm not a artist so please forgive a couple of cheats - the doodle I did has helped a great deal and when I realised the helmet was wonky I started to go over the 15 minutes and then stopped. Anyhoo all that said I am quite pleased with this.

I like that Colin. He looks like a right grouchy bastard, ready to bust some chops!
They all have 'something' that is so totally Dredd. It's fascinating because it shows that each artist brings out a different element of Dredd's character. It is also true that some of you should be more confident about your work than you are. Excellent!

awesome you gotta post the rest of this!
The rest is wonky. I tried to make it work but it initially began as a doodle, growing to develop a little bit of charm, so there was no foundation on which to paint, and I wasn't paying much attention to light sources which is what'd make this style "pop". But here's another slice.

This one is actually a coupla years old, one of my first wacom doodles and the last Dredd I drew until today. I remember knocking ths one out quite quick, well within the 15 mins.
Love it. I'd wear that on a t-shirt

Haha exactly :D
Everyone knows that Dredd is just Desperate Dan in fancy dress.
As a long time lurker, and only very occasional poster (I just checked and last time I posted was 2007... hello), I've been meaning to do this since this thread started. I had time on my hands this week, so I have done. This was 13 mins, with a Wacom Bamboo and Artrage.

I love the sculptural quality of his face. Really, very nice.
Hi everyone. I thought I'd throw my hat (head) into the ring...
think the helmet might be a bit small.
Very good spaceghost a great Dredd. Looks a bit like explorer Bear Gryliss so he'll be crunching a few frogs between his teeth. :)
Nice inks there woooh, im gonna do my Dredd but it wont come up anywhere near as special as yours.
Sorry about the crap attempt on the other page.
Thanks for the nice comments.

I thought your Urban Dredd was great!
Kevlev: Nicely defined three-dimensional quality to yours. Good stuff!
Spaceghost: Looks kinda like Ezquerra inking MacNeil. this is a very good thing, obviously! My only quibble would be that you neglected to include a Carlos-style dotted outline :)

While on lunch break at work. In me car. :P

Lovely dramatic shading on that one, Krom.
Cheers Darren, ha- it don't half feel naked seeing how much I can do in 15 minutes. First Time-Trial I've done on the MSDebut4.
15 mins photoshop

Absolutely brilliant :D

And what a way to do it. Great stuff
Seconded - a great sketch. Scrolling up, KevLev's was amazingly cool as well.
Haven't drawn anything in fkn ages

17 mins. my pen ran out so went hunting.(http://i1040.photobucket.com/albums/b410/danjackota/DSC00313.jpg)
no chain!!!
I don't think the missing chain is the thing that's going to upset folk - - He has DENNIS THE MENACE HAIR.
Shadowy though. Lovely and shadowy.

Finally got round to doing this during SKETCHERSIZE
Unfinished, but I only had 5 minutes

In honour of my new Bamboo, here is my first attempt at properly sketching a Dredd Head (after a bit of practice to get used to using a tablet).
Blimey you learn fast! That's ace.
Cheers. Took a wee while to get the hang of it. Now to learn how to ink!
Awesome thread, some cracking Dredds on display - heres my effort. 17mins I'm afraid, never mind. God bless the chain pattern brush in Manga Studio says I. ;)

Eerily good NeilFord.
That is brilliant Neil.
Thanks! Dunno about brilliant, it's somewhat raggedy... good fun though! :)
Just under 15 mins (ish) with good old black pens and a Japanese brush pen.

Brilliant stuff SS, you've done a great job of creating some atmosphere in such a short time frame.
Love it - beauteous halftones

10-15 min warm up with 2 pen sizes.
I really like that - BOLD
Done in twenty minutes (I'm sorry), using a biro, a pencil and a rubber.
SBT
First Dreddhead in a while. Did this about 2 weeks ago to warm up (hadn't drawn anything at all for a few weeks before that).
That's absolutely great Mygrimmbrother
10 minute warm up, happy with how it turned out, might ink this sucker now.
Felt tip and Hobby Crafts cheapest paper (all nicked from my little girls craft cupboard SShhhh!)Took about seven minutes and I'll admit it is a little skewed.
http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h331/Archeyoap/DreddHead1.jpg (http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h331/Archeyoap/DreddHead1.jpg)
My first Dredd in 20 years!
Very reminiscent of Trevor Hairsine!
Thanks for the compliment Strontium71. I have to admit I'd no idea who he was and had to google his name. Bizarrely he was the cover artist to the first Judge Dredd book I'd bought last month.
Anyway thought I'd try again. The cheap paper went all wrinkly and I never made the 15 mins. It took more like 20/25 and I rushed the end as can be seen by the collar. I actually prefer my first effort it seems more fluid and has more depth.
http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h331/Archeyoap/DreddHead3.jpg (http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h331/Archeyoap/DreddHead3.jpg)
Hate to say it but it actually looks better saved as B/W image. Ah well you live and learn ::)

Quick warm up sketch here.
Not planned and just kind of worked.
I like it. Did you get warmed up enough to draw anything else?
It's CamKennedytacular :O

I did actually. A(nother) Star Wars character based commission, although this is for a family member's birthday.
I'll post it in the Art Big This thread once I've finished it later.
Hey.
Here,s my 15 minutes Dredd head.
Marker and watercolors.
It,s my cheesy avatar too.
Another one.
This took me 20 minutes.
Ballpen and PS.
I love the style and colouring but it looks like Judge Underactive Thyroid.
Does he look better after surgeon?

Judge Cake.
Not quite a complete Dredd head as I started on the wrong part of the page but here is my humble effort......
