Title: Wiki Beta, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the community
Post by: VinceBot on 19 January, 2010, 04:49:53 pm
http://wiki.2000adonline.com/ (http://wiki.2000adonline.com/)

Yes, we now have a Wiki for the community to fill up with all things 2000AD!

It doesn't feature on the front page or have any links to it on the flashy banner, but thats a technical issue rather than laziness. While it's in beta and contains hardly any original data it'll stay off the front page.
Hopefully you guys can adopt the Wiki and before long it'll be up there alongside the News button.

The stickied thread (http://2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,27317.0.html) explains the majority of all things related to interaction, so give that a read if you've never used a Wiki before, or want to know whats special about this one.

Where we're at

I've spent the last week setting up a converter to grab all the data from the Vault and jam it into the Wiki - 99% of the data make it unharmed, but there are still some sketchy elements. If you spot any, feel free to fix them.

Progs, Megs, Creators, Characters and Series all use templates to organise their data. You can see this by going into a Prog and hitting the "Edit" tab.
I'd like to keep all progs, megs, specials and graphic novels using these kinds of templates, so please keep using them where possible.

All articles are missing data, or have terribe, terrible images. Feel free to browse through characters and series and things and update their pictures, or fill out their statistics and whatnot.

Stories, all 3,319 of them, are missing a synopsis and list of character appearances.

Speaking of character appearances, feel free to name or create articles for not only main characters but bit-part characters and villains and things. The Wiki, unlike the Vault, has room for everyone.

Progs and Megazines all need their Captial field filling out, which is the prominent themed text line that features on the front of the cover.

All specials and graphic novels need adding, even by name. If you happen to have a 2000AD graphic novel set next to you, type in the title into the address bar and create a new page for it.

Finally..

Don't get angry or moan about other peoples utilisation of the Wiki - its a collaborative effort and anyone can edit it, including you. If you spot claring mistakes, feel free to change them.

Be civil, be patient, and report any problems you can't fix yourself.

Have fun guys, I hope you can make something good out of this.

I've worked out the Recent Changes issue is due to the Liquid Threads extension, but I can't find any information on it. It might simply be a case of updating to te latest version, but it's not going to get done until tomorrow.

The link here said presents!!

I don't seem to be able to log in - it takes me to the forum login, I log in and it takes me to the forum main page and the wiki doesn't seem to recognise me as being logged in.

Also - is there room for things like Class of '79, Dogbreath or Zarjaz in there? There is a section for the small press feature (http://wiki.2000adonline.com/index.php/Small_Press) in the Meg and it might help with that too.

I want to contribute, but, like Emperor, I'm in an endless need to login/already logged in loop...

Very excited though, AT LAST, 2000AD individual issues can link to online reviews AND the clickwheel website for downloading those issues. Which means I can point someone from my website to 2000AD work I've done and give them a chance to buy it!

HURRAH!

Not sure about the login loop, when you go back to the wiki try pressing ctrl-f5, or shift-f5 to force a refresh.

I'll take a look at it tomorrow morning, and hopefully I can fix it in a better way.

I will have a go at this one day. I had plenty of wiki practice on Uncyclopaedia back when I had an office job that gave me unrealistic objectives and unlimited internet access, unlike the office job I have now.

Part is synonymous with episode.

Hi Vincebot,

Loving this so far! But is there a proper way to link back from a story to the prog (or meg) in which it appears?

Title: Re: Wiki Beta, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the community
Post by: VinceBot on 20 January, 2010, 02:35:05 pm
There's no way set up to link back from a particular episode to a particular prog, however under a story (such as A Bullet In The Head (http://wiki.2000adonline.com/index.php/A_Bullet_In_The_Head)) you'll notice on the right hand side in the InfoBox is a "Featured in - X Publications" link, which bring up a category showing each publication the story has featured in.. which I hope fully include any reprits of that story, too.

If you need to link to/from a story/publication for any reason, just use a regular link.

One of the many reasons this is great is that I've been wanting to unload Touched By the Hand of Tharg for some months now - the inability to get progs last year was a big factor, and now I can simply copy over everything (slowly!) and add a little code, and leave it behind for somebody else to carry on.  I'm starting with ABC Warriors:

Thanks, VinceBot!

Yeah, seems that if you hit 'EDIT' within the body of a subject (esp if based on a template) then the template itself becomes editable. Which is weird and annoying.

You need to hit 'EDIT' at the top of the entry - where it says PAGE | DISCUSSION | EDIT

Bit weird this, but are are the flash navigation buttons not working when you're in the wiki? (work fine in every other location, but the wiki leaves the button unresponsive)

Also: can something be done in the backend to fix all those Slaines? (rather than Mad Mike Carroll editing every single entry - you mad man...)

Unfortunately not - wiki media stores the data as a binary BLOB, so there's no query or script I can run. I'd have to set up a bot to locate and change them, which I unfortunately havn't got time to do.

Still, only 224 to go. You can do eet.

Yeah, seems that if you hit 'EDIT' within the body of a subject (esp if based on a template) then the template itself becomes editable. Which is weird and annoying.

Oh wow, that's annoying. I can't see a way to fix it without locking down the template though.

Bit weird this, but are are the flash navigation buttons not working when you're in the wiki? (work fine in every other location, but the wiki leaves the button unresponsive)

They use relative paths, which was fine for www.2000adonline.com but on wiki.2000adonline.com the destination doesn't exist, so the buttons don't work.
As I said before, there's a technical issue with updating the banner - we're working to get it sorted out but it might be a while before we can fix the links or get the Wiki added to it.
For now, you can use the links at the very top of the page in the red bar to navigate if you need to.

Do you think adding an automatic link to click wheel would be worth doing for the issue template?

The following, should link via the issue number for individual progs:

http://www.clickwheel.net/features/219?query={{{Issue}}}

(and if clickwheel ever change how they work then, at least, in the template, it should be easy changed?)

The link may have to say something like "Check ClickWheel for Availability of Digital Download" (just in case the prog isn't on there...)

Post by: VinceBot on 21 January, 2010, 11:55:29 am
I'm amazed that works and din't know about it, so sure. I'll fudge it into the template.

Edit: Done, added as a "See Also" link. Only shows on progs that are edited from here onward.

Woohoo!

However, I don't think we're quite out of the haunted woods yet: searching for "Slaine" doesn't return entries where it's spelled "Sláine".

Likewise, some of the story titles are spelled "Slaine" (e.g., "Slaine: The Horned God"). So should those titles also be changed to "Sláine"?

Depends what mood you're in. Story titles don't matter so much and might be more trouble than they're worth.

Slaine and Sláine are technically different, so the search results are correct (they shouldn't be ignorant of unicode). It's a bit of a bugger if you don't know, I guess, but I don't think there's any way to fix it.

Hey Mike, I noticed you deleted the content out of the "Back to the F##uhrer" page with the correupted name, then created it anew in "Back to the Fuhrer".

In future, instead of blanking the source page you can just click the "move" tab and change the name to what it should be, then change the data in the page to match. this will keep the modification history.

I'll sort out a template people can include which can be used to mark pages for deletion.

Redirects. They are awfully handy for picking up such variations in spelling and where there are accents, like this case. A button for them should be available in an extended version of the editing tool bar you get across the top of the page.

I added some now, so searching for "Slaine" will get you to the disambiguation page, searching for "slaine series" will take you to the series and [[Slaine (series)|Slaine]] will create a link to the series article.

They are created automatically from the character box - fill in the series field. I assume you can add others (as Devlin Waugh is a character in Judge Dredd and his own series).

See, for example:

.. wait. It's all well and good adding these guys to categories, but we should probably simplify/automate and organise.. whatever it is we're trying to do here.

The Stories have a field for Character which is expandable, the idea being that you can list each character which has appeared in that story.

The Characters have a field to represent what series the character belongs to, not what they've featured in.

Surely the stories field is the one you want to fill out in this instance? I'm not sure we can successfully tie the Character noted in the Story to a Series, though.

Otherwise you'll have to add each series reference to the character template for each little appearance they make, and you'll have no record of WHERE they made the appearance. If we went that route then we should probably introduce a new field, like "appeared in", where you can list series.

Ah ha, and this is where you come down to how you define something like "belong" is going to be a tricky beast - Judge Anderson belongs in both the Dredd and her own series I'd have thought (ditto Hammerstein and Ro-Busters/ABC Warriors). Thinking it through there aren't that many characters who have crossed over (and often it'll largely be Dredd characters who had their own spin-off series) and usually only into one story, so it is probably not going to be that confusing (or require an extra field, unless you want one to differentiate between characters who belong to more than one series and those who have only appeared in a series).

I was wondering if be a way to import collection information? It'd obviously be handy to have something like the Extreme Editions listed but very useful for things like the Case Files where you'd want an overview page and one for each Case File - all you'd need there is the ability to list the stories and include links to reviews and the like.

It'd be handy as we could link to the various characters/series (and trade collections if the previous idea works out*).

*I have a list of trade reviews saved off if you want me to drop them in here so they can be incorporated as you go along, I'd also include such recommendation as this (as bring such things together so someone can look through them at their leisure could help swing potential buyers):

What an amazing idea.  And it's going so well, too.  When I have time I'll be sure to join the fun.

If I could make a suggestion... is there really a need for separate pages for (character) and (series) at all?  Why not just have one page, and leave room for a "fictional character biography" - as Wikipedia terms it - there for us to fill out?

Some series aren't characters, and some characters aren't series. This is a descendant from the Vault (front page) setup, where it doesn't make sense database-wise to mix the two into one entity.

Really though, the wiki is free for you guys to figure out. Can you make a separate topic about it?

Just one thing that could lead to confusion, if you go to a creators page and click on edit in one of the sections you don't do to a box where you can edit the section, you go to the template and edit that bit of the template (which then inserts that text in every page using the template). To add content to a page you need to edit the whole page.

Is there any way to kill the section [edit] links in the mainspace to avoid this problem? If anyone wanted to change the template they can still go to that specific page.

You'd need to edit in the magic word (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Magic_words) "__NOEDITSECTION__", which hides edit section links, into each of the templates.

I might do this myself if I get some spare time.

OK cool. I've added that to Character, Creator, Megazine, Prog, Series and Story.
