Would have been good if there was a Judge Kwan rather than Judge Chan. A nice little not to the Apocalypse war.

I respectfully disagree; wether it is a nice nod or not depends on what Judge Chan's role in the movie actually is.

If he appears as an ordinary judge who acts as backup for Dredd or something like that, then yes, it's a nice nod.

But if he on the other hand is one of the corrupt judges in the script, which I think he is, it would be anything but.

That sort of namechecking for what could be a random corrupt Judge who appears on screen for a single digit amount of minutes precludes putting the actual character to much better use in a potential future sequel.

Same with Judge Guthrie, if he also is one of the corrupt judges rather than the Guthrie of Wally Squad fame we know from The Pit, I don't think that's a nice nod either.

I'd rather they stay with random names for random characters rather than diminish the names of actual characters who made a genuine impact in the comic.

I fully agree. The way Judge Dredd '95 had every chief judge ever on the council of five was a prime example of how, really, NOT to do it.

I'm not being funny -- there are whole films that look like this now; does anyone honestly look at a shot like that and think the colour scheme is in any way naturalistic? What's the point being a costume designer or a lighting director any more when some fucknut in the digital grading department is just going to push the whole thing into this one limited colour register?

Gaah!

To be honest, while teal and orange is far too prevalent these days and lazy, many directors shoot flat lighting on HD to expose as much detail in the shot as possible so they can push things more (either way) in the grade. In other words they shoot for the grade. T'wouldn't be the grader's fault generally since it's the director, sometimes the editor too, who oversee the end prduct. Not every film-maker goes for the "natural" look either; "natural" is a style rather than a prescription.

No, I agree. I'm not arguing that everything should look naturalistic, but this damn colour scheme is everywhere. I can barely get through a trailer without seeing it. Seriously -- go pick three at random from here (http://trailers.apple.com/) and I'm prepared to bet money that at least one, and more likely two, will have a noticeable number of shots in orange and teal. It's so overused, it's flattening out entire movies -- they might as well be shot in B&W as far as I'm concerned.

Bah!

It's a bit like every second drama in the 80's was shot with a blue filter or everthing being green or saturated in the 90's. It starts with a notable film then spreads everywhere until it's a default TV grade. I've yet to see someone recreate the 70's film-stock look -my favourite- properly though; it produced a lovely glow around bulbs and lights.

What movie is that still from Goaty? I ask because I was watching the brilliant In Bruges the other night (again) and the girl in that shot looks like the lovely lovely lady from that, who I don't think I've seen in anything else.

That'd be the woefully underused Clemence Posey, indeed in In Bruges, here playing Fleur Delacour, bride at the Weasley wedding in HP and the Deathly Hallows.  She's quite smashing.

I caught a bit of Tears of the Sun the other night - dear lord, everybody's face was a strange orangey-green colour throughout, and I confess my first thought was of Jim's torment.  Not an extreme example by any means, but is this the first Treen/Human hybrid?

Since the script is only a piece of paper and not the actual film -which is what will be the intended/official version of the story made for an audience 99.9% of whom will never read the script- does it matter she's no longer fat?

John Rhys-Davies talks about how when he auditioned for the role of Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark, he was concerned since the script originally described Sallah as a "5-foot-2, skinny, Egyptian digger" Does it matter now?

Would it have mattered to the character of Ma-Ma if in the original script she wasn't fat to an audience?

Things always change from script to screen. The screenplay is the plan, it's not the end product.

The film-makers may have realised that a character type Lena can play is better and more convincing for the part than a fat broad, plus they actually got Lena Headey to play the part.

Considering Headey is officially playing Ma-Ma, I don't see how she's Chief Judge now.
: Re: Dredd Film Cast list...
: FuzzChile99 02 February, 2011, 10:46:41 PM
Then again the script that's floating around the web may well be a red herring ,I kind of visualised Ma Ma kind of like Liz from GTA4 type of character , things change once a film goes into production , but Lena would be a great Hershey or McGruder.
: Re: Dredd Film Cast list...
: JOE SOAP 02 February, 2011, 10:54:44 PM

No, it's the real, genuine reading script.

I think they are more concerned with the success of this film than any sequels at the moment so they're trying to get the best people for the most on-screen relevant characters. The Chief Judge isn't really a character in the new film, she's in the background.

Getting a good actor to play the part of the main villain is what is most important now not a background character who hardly appears. The stronger the role of the adversary -played by a strong actor- the stronger the conflict will be, resulting in a stronger, better film. Lena Headey fits the bill and I'm sure there'll been many more script changes as the shoot continues and throughout post production too. I would say the character of Ma-Ma has expanded a bit. Making this film as goo as possiible is what will help sequels become a reality.

Lets hope that's the case . To tell you the truth I hope we get to see a little more of Mega City than whats suggested in that script (it dosen't have to dominate the story but most of the action happens within a block) so a little more of M.C.1 would be nice .
: Re: Dredd Film Cast list...
: JOE SOAP 02 February, 2011, 11:46:22 PM
I don't think we need to see much of the city apart from the opening and some exterior shots, it's not imperative to the story- an unenlightened audience won't be too peeved as long as it's a good film and for us a good film that actually has Dredd in it.
: Re: Dredd Film Cast list...
: Mardroid 03 February, 2011, 01:18:08 AM
Besides, we don't know yet that Ma ma won't be fat! They might stick Lena in some kind of fat suit.* and goodness knows what prosthetics.

But yeah, as long as her acting fits the character personality well it shouldn't matter. It's not as if Ma ma is an established character in the comic, they're inventing her form the ground up.

*I pity her if  that's the case, out in the South African heat!
: Re: Dredd Film Cast list...

No I honestly think an audience should get a idea of the scale of Mega City perhaps you can  in a opening shot , but after that an audience may forget  once the main story kicks in(The action is mainly interior based  , intentionally perhaps)but  I'm thinking not just about  the film itself , i'm thinking about the game that may come out at same time as movie. An audience which may not be so much into films may need a idea of how huge a Mega City is , I hope a game is coming out with release of movie and that it depicts Mega City in a way readers will recognise, a film lasts around two hours but a decent game(with a decent story) lasts longer which is just as important these day's .

You really don't need to feature the city that much to get a sense of it's size. I think the fact that the city-block has 200 floors is enough to convey the idea, subtly, of millions of humans packed into utilitarian housing blocks, a few wide shots showing many of these blocks collonaded would suffice, crudely you could end with a pull-out to a vast city-scape. I'm not sure it's that important to the story in the middle of the action and I certainly wouldn't want the audience thinking about it when trying to convey the feeling of imprisonment.
