Brilliant!!!

Love FCBD... well obviously I love getting free comics. But love it more cos we make a family thing of it too. Me, my son  & his fiance. We trek round Leeds together, compare our haul. We make sure we get what we all are after. We give doubles away to folk.

This year we went to Royal Armouries straight after for their Arms & Armour of Super Heroes & Villains weekend. Saw Pete Doherty there doing a 'How to Draw' thingy. Ellis got photoed with Iron Man. THEN we saw Iron Man 3. Brilliant Day!!!

We'll try to find some extra fun in 2014 too.

Jan Duursema, now that a blast from the past. Like Colin's guilty pleasure in KaZar, mine was Arion, Lord of Atlantis, which she created and drew. In my teenage years, with thoughts of being a great comicy type person, I wrote several continuing adventure of Arion, thankfully long lost! It will be nice to see her art again.

The cover is fantastic, and fair play to all involved, the effort look to be great that has gone into this.

I had a wee look at this beauty today and can't wait for the actual day itself now, so I can pick up mine :'(

The artist on Dredd was excellent, reminded me a little of the Mega-City Two stuff and someone else but I can't place it (sorry can't remember the name, I only flicked through it).

I thought the mix between new and old stuff was well placed! I couldn't tell if the Slaine was a new strip but it may have been, as I didn't recognise the art.

I also thought the one page strip at the end was very reminiscent of those funny Future Shocks from years back, this was Henry Flint and Annie Parkhouse. I would've loved the reveal to be on another page though, as I couldn't help but take in the whole page as I flicked through.

I wasn't on the forum this time last year so didn't know how to order the FCBD 2000AD. Is there any way to get it now or indeed any from previous years (not sure when it started)?

Very reminiscent of the space fleet eaten by a small dog in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, though with a rather disgusting twist.

picked mine up this AM, FP was heaving.
Dredd a fine post DoC story, with a couple of blasts from the past nicely worked-in , only complaint was the black ink in my copy for the first four and last four pages was very very pale so the Dredd story and Daily Dredd were tricky to read, but hey its free stop moaning right?
Nice to visit Gibbons' RT again, While Durham Red's Red Sonya outfit looks incredibly dated.
Had hope Absalom was going to be a new tale, but no.

Damage Report: poor thing!

Got my FCBD Prog today and have just started diving in.
Thoughts so far-the Dredd story is really fantastic and the art compliments the writing superbly!
Much kudos to the Smith, Burnham, Fairbairn and Parr droids!

Flicked through the rest of the Prog, which appears equally superb!

Well done to all involved! The bar has been set very high for FCBD issues in the future!   :)

As usual I got to Forbidden Planet waaay too late to get my 2000AD (Dunk very kindly got me one last year). Probably just as well, as the queue this morning was around the block apparently, and with three kids in tow that would have been grim.

My girls did well out of it when we eventually got there though:

A really nice starter prog, and I rather liked the touch of the back cover being a Thargian seal from one of the mid 80s annuals.  Took me right back.

One thing I really loved though was the fact the cover was glossy.  This is pretty much the only change I'd make to the regular prog (especially seeing as the postman always manages to crease my subs prog putting it through the letterbox, except on weeks when its a glossy cover relaunch prog).  It just looks and feels much better.  Wonder how much difference it would make to the cover price to do it.

I got mine at the signing at London's Forbidden Planet, when Matt Smith, Henry Flint and Tiernan Trevallion had already been signing away for an hour and a half. They must by that time have been pretty tired and bored, but I very much appreciated their perseverance, because otherwise I would have missed out. Could Michael Molcher or whoever moderates this post please pass on to them my thanks?

In an article about the best FCBD2014 books, io9 says about 2000AD:

"The best value this Free Comics Book Day has to be 2000 AD, which is offering a full magazine-sized issue which contains all the 2000 AD greats: Judge Dredd, Rogue Troopers, Slåine, Absalom, Durham Red and even a classic Judge Anderson story. The two best are Dredd and Absalom, as the former advises a young new Judge how to survive his first five minutes of the job, and Absalom, who's like John Constantine's grumpier, bitterer grandfather."

Didn't think I'd make it this year, but on my way to a day out, I persuaded my friend that I just HAD to stop off in town for something essential - she wasn't too impressed at driving round the block while I dashed into Travelling man and came out with armfuls of free comics!

As per last year, TM was fast and efficient - felt momentarily guilty at snagging two progs, but the spare is going to a fellow boarder, not on e-bay. Also like last year, the gestapo-controlled queue at FP was round the corner, and I'd pushed my luck already, so didn't bother with them.

The 2000ad was great, but I've flicked through the rest of the pile and there seems to be a whole heap of *meh* out at the moment.

That's the way I feel, except the Mouse Guard for me was charming as always. I'm a fan of the Tick, so I enjoyed that even if it was thoroughly average, but nothing else was worth bothering with for me.

Last year's group was a lot stronger, IMO.

Buggrit! By the time I got to my local (Excelsior in Bristol) mid afternoon on Saturday 2000AD had long gone :(
Was rushing for a train so no time to pop up to FP.
In Maidstone today and popped into The Grinning Demon - a few copies of other things (only bothered picking up Hatter M) but no 2000AD left - Graham said it'd gone very fast on FCBD.
Bah! Missed it last year too. Must try harder!

Finally got around to reading this and have to say its a blast. Two of the three (yes three count um) strips are quite brilliant. The Durham Red one didn't really work for me on either level, or story, but did feel like an old annual story so gets points for that.

Henry Flint's Future Shock wasn't too shocking but was so glorious and such rollocking fun that frankly I didn't care.

The Dredd by Matt Smith and Chris Burnham is the absolute standout though. One of the best one shot Dredd's I've read for sometime, quite, quite brilliant and a wonderful introduction to Dredd and his world.

Love this.

I ordered on the link too and it was waiting for me when I got home this evening.

A very nice quality issue. Thankfully most of the old strips were before my time so with the exception of Absalom (and that was still a good read) it was all new to me. I liked most of it although the Slain stuff seemed rather slight. I got the impression it was mainly intended as a taster advertising the trade though.

I enjoyed my day out to the capital to get some stuff signed by Tharg and droids at Forbidden Planet. I didn't think it was as busy as last year, but that might have just been me. Perhaps Ron Smith proved a bigger draw? Anyway, it was still a good event and by 2pm they had run out of adult goodie bags, with just the kids ones left. My 10 year old enjoyed his goodie bag, with The Simpsons and Teen Titans going down well.

Good to see The Surfer there as well. Sadly didn't catch any other forum members.

Looking forward to next year already!

I went down to my local comic shop here in leafy Richmond, RayGun. Lo and behold it was bloody packed! Swarms of the juves (who were alright) but their protective mams were a bit much, lineblocking the other kids from the table till their little one had grabbed what they wanted.

Still got what I wanted - 2000AD sampler! Rather enjoyed it, particularly the Dredd strip. Best of the bunch in my book, certainly much better than Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. They haven't quite worked out the best way to incorporate the MCU into the actual comics I feel.

Also of note, Rufus Dayglo was there drawing pictures of Tank Girl. He is exactly how I imagined a comic book artist to look.

Very nice issue, Tharg writes a mean Dredd. And hadn't read The Glass Zone in over 30 years...  :)

I've taken advantage of Disposableheroes FCBD stuff in the past,, so I can't be hypocritical, but I'm curious - What's their deal?

Do they have a special arrangement to sell these online; do they cream a few copies off all their associated comic shops, or do they just gather and re-sell fan-collected copies as soon as they're out?
: Re: 2000AD FCBD 2014.
: Bat King 10 May, 2014, 01:41:52 AM
They are a shop, albeit an online one, and get FCBD products the same way the LCS do - they buy them.

99p for a free comic is pretty much just covering P&P.

99p was for the comic; the postage charge was added at checkout.

but I thought the whole point of FCBD was to physically get punters into local comic shops - I'd have thought that online "shops" would be excluded by definition.

They only charged me 99p.  Nowt was added at checkout.

Had a message from them saying it's on its way so will keep looking.  With bank holiday post can be a bit odd.  (Ok, more odd than usual!)

I'm sure I read somewhere on their site that the charge was to cover the P&P. And I think they are free P&P anyway. However, where this model breaks down is ordering multiple copies. A friend of mine couldn't get to FCBD, living nowhere near a comic shop, so ordered three comics he wanted from this site. Cost him £2.98. Far more than the postage and cardboard envelope...

I generally like DH as a company and their service. But can't help but think they are making money from the FCBD comics.... I don't like that...

Same here. I paid 99p in total which covers postage...*just* Can't ask for more really.

Likewise.
And 99p postage is cheap - no charge at all would be odd.

As far as getting people into shops on FCBD; I tried that last year. By lunchtime the prog was gone.

Will the FCBD issue ever be made available digitally? I understand that it should be physically exclusive in an attempt to get people into shops but what about releasing last years as a free teaser for the digi service?

We don't release our FCBD editions digitally - there's already a huge freebie on the iPad app and we give away PDFs through the weekly newsletter every so often :)

That's fair and I can see how releasing it digitally could be seen as going against the concept of FCBD.

On a similar note, do the FCBD stories get collected in the relevant graphic novels?

At a guess as previous Dredd FCBD stories were collected in 'the restricted files' which would be the relevant graphic novel, I'd say yes

I got my copy of the FCBD 2000AD from DH at the weekend and I must say it is impressive.  This is the first FCBD I have got my hands on and as others have already mentioned, the Dredd tale and Future Shock were particular standouts along with some great reprint material.

I'm sure I read somewhere on their site that the charge was to cover the P&P. And I think they are free P&P anyway. However, where this model breaks down is ordering multiple copies. FCBD is a great idea but it is a bit of a pain in the arse in practice.  DH provide a fantastic service for those who can't get to the comic shop first thing on the day.  No offence Sim but I wouldn't say 99p a comic is ripping folks off at all and the example of £2.98 for the time to pick and wrap three comics, cost of labels, the comics themselves, a comic mailer and cost of postage doesn't really leave much for them to profit from.

Restricted File 4 wrapped up on FCBD prog 2012 I believe. To compile another will take at least another decade, though naturally if the summer specials become regulares as well then they'll be lumped in to.

I just got a quick look at this tonight and like the Future Shock very much.

Back in 2010, on this very forum, there was a thread about submitting one-page FS-type stories to Mark Millar's Clint. I got together with the wonderful johnnystress to produce a strip called "World Hunger" which has since been available here (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,28305.msg511467.html#msg511467) and is reproduced below...

I never got to realise my ambition of getting a Future Shock in 2000 AD, but it's nice to know I was on the right lines at least...!

Lovely art from Johnnystress/Johnnymc there - and also from mr Flint (the FCBD issue is about 80 percent him which is like a dream :D) but I DO BELIEVE Marvel got there before both of you ;)
