Title: The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast - the official podcast of the Galaxy's Greatest Comic!
Post by: Molch-R on 22 January, 2015, 10:38:12 am
PR droid Molch-R brings you to the first ever 2000 AD Thrill-Cast! In this inaugural episode, he chats about the first edition of the Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection with special guests Douglas Wolk (Judge Dredd: City of Courts) and Judge Dredd: America artist Colin MacNeil!

Downloadable or listenable to at https://soundcloud.com/2000-ad/the-2000-ad-thrill-cast-episode1-20-jan-2015

Thanks to audio droid Mechanoise for his recording expertise and fabulous hair.

A feed via iTunes will be forthcoming just as soon as the droids assemble podcasting machine RSS-01. His instructions are a bit complicated...

Looking forward to listening to this!

Does anyone know how to download it on mobile? The Soundcloud app and mobile site doesn't have the download button.

Normally for podcasts I subscribe using a podcast app I have, it checks for new episodes and downloads them. When I give it the 2000AD podcast address it can find the podcast and subscribes but then doesn't show any downloadable episodes. Think it uses the RSS feed or something (I don't know how that stuff works) so is that functionality that'll appear once the itunes stuff is sorted?

I believe the RSS droid is still being unpacked and assembled...

(Molch-R says so in the opening post)

Great podcast - Colin's comments had me flipping back through America and seeing it with new eyes. Long may these podcasts continue.

The plan is to have six initial fortnightly episodes to coincide with editions of the Mega Collection, then - and only if the format proves itself worth continuing with - it would shift to a monthly series with a more general 2000 AD focus.

Sounds good to me.  Personally, I think the format - informed host talks to talented creators about 2000AD - works just fine (what's not to like?), so for me it'll come down to who's available to appear on it.  Colin and Douglas were a great start - both hugely interesting and engaging.   You were alright as well, I suppose.

That was great stuff - perfect mix of guests in Colin and Douglas.  I almost said 'looks like Molcher missed his vocation', but it's more a case that he found it.

How do I listen to this on my i-pod? I can get it to play on my PC and I've signed up for 'soundcloud' (whose search function then disavows any knowledge of anything with 200ad in title), but how do I transfer it to i-tunes?

There's a download link on the original page Molch-R linked which lets you grab the mp3. You should then be able to transfer this into iTunes as normal.

By a strange coincidence, if I search 2000 ad (with the space (https://soundcloud.com/search?q=2000%20ad)) on Soundcloud, the first result is somebody I'm aware of from another forum.

Still haven't figured out how to subscribe to the podcast or download it on mobile (on Android). Soundcloud mobile app doesn't have a download option for it and podcast apps can find and subscribe to it but can't find any downloadable episodes. I can probably download on PC and transfer it over to my phone, but been used to just subscribing on a podcast app and having it pull in new episodes.

Anyone had any luck with it?

Is there a way to subscribe and download on Android? Still haven't managed to get my podcast app to find any episodes (think it searches by RSS feeds usually, does that need set up for the podcast?) and soundcloud has no download link on mobile. To be honest I'm a bit stumped - there's a Soundcloud app and downloads on our SC account are enabled. If you need the RSS feed it's at http://2000adthrillcast.podomatic.com/rss2.xml

Thanks, putting that address in manually has done it. I'm relatively new to using podcast subscriptions but so far I've just searched in Podcast Addict by the name of the podcast and it finds it and pulls in the episodes, which didn't seem to be working for this. All good now though, subscribed and downloaded. Thanks for the link!

Not a complaint, just a thought: While forcing my husband to listen to ep 2 in the car, I had to adjust the volume a bunch between you and Matt -he's a bit quiet in comparison- and was dismayed to see his attention waning because of this. Mayhaps equalize the voices a bit more in future eps to avoid marital strife?

Yes, it's something Mechanoise brought up and will try and adjust for when we have guests in the studio rather than down a phoneline. I clearly benefit from too many years on the stage, dahling ;)

How are you doing the interviews? If you Skype them, you could get everyone to record their end using something like Call Recorder for Skype, which can force each person to a separate channel. Balancing levels is then pretty simple and the quality stays high.

We already do that with Skype - the problem mimikeke mentioned with last week's episode wasn't Skype, it was just that Matt, Pye, and I were sat in the sound booth together and the sound guy didn't realise how much quieter Matt was. Sorted for next time though ;)

Listened to the second episode a few nights ago and was delighted to hear about some of the upcoming books that aren't the main Dredd strip, which Matt talked about. One of my concerns before deciding to subscribe was that I have just over half of the Case Files volumes and a couple of other collections set in the universe, and I was worried I may be picking up a lot of what I already have. But I was very happy to hear of some of the collections being put together reprinting some strips for the first time and that stories yet to make their way into the Case Files will be making an appearance. It all sounds very up my alley and, if I had had any concerns about how the books would be getting put together, they would have been thrown aside too after listening to the way that not only the books are being arranged thematically, but how the contents of each volume are too.

It's gonna be a belter of a collection, this. Although I'll no doubt continue with the Case Files at some point (moreso if they decide to slowly reprint volume 2 onwards in hardback as well, if the first 10th anniversary reprint sells well, presuming that's how such decisions are made), I really think this will be a great compilation of the essential Dredd tales and stories from the rest of the universe too.

More of these podcasts too, by the way! Loved listening to Pye explain why he's designed the books so and the difficulty with certain covers to some books and of course, more creators would be great to hear from.

Compenetrate: to penetrate every aspect of a persons being....don't even think it is Spanish (massively subject to correction), but it is a beautiful term and judging by the closeness of the intelluctual; if not philosophical relationship between Carlos and JW, it seems apt. Z

Yeah, really really enjoying these and I'm pleased to hear they're going to keep going. There's a whole stack of people I'd love to hear from on there - Wagner, Grant, Ron Smith, Bolland, Mike MacMahon, Al Ewing, Gordon Rennie, Mike Carrol, Henry Flint, Rob Williams and loads more.

The only downside is it sounds like Molch-R sounds like he's having a great time doing them, but you can't have everything.

Finally caught up with the Thrill Cast - love it! I imagine they're quite time consuming, but I hope they continue throught the (two?) years of the partworks and then beyond...

Any chance of some Ennis on there? He's a good talker, as I recall. And Carroll, definitely Carroll.

Thanks Molch-R and the thrillcast team.

Listened to the third podcast this morning.
It was excellent. Only ruined a smidge by Molchy constantly referring to Block Mania as Block War  ;)

Will listen to #4 this afternoon.

These are superb. Keep up the good work!

Caught up on the thrillcasts at work last night (staring into a hole in the ground at 2am in a blizzard, warmed by glow of thrillpower), really good stuff, long may they continue. Although passersby may have been disturbed to hear me shout 'Mania! MANIA!' at frequent intervals.

Just read your comment after I posted mine.

I feel your pain, Brother  :)

Yep, it's the same livery as the iTunes ad - which Apple chose from a variety of designs. It's also from the cover of Origins, the book we're talking about.

Another great episode. You ought to bring Carlos back for every story arc of his that's reprinted - and the same goes for MacNeil, especially as his style undergoes significant changes in different books - although I hope some writers will be involved in the future too.

Up to this point I've already read all the material, so I'll be reading the next volume before listening to the next episode of the podcast, which I hope Arthur Ranson can make a guest appearance in as I absolutely loved his work on reading Buttonman for the first time earlier this year, and as P.F. is one of my favourite Dredd one-offs, I'm of course very interested to see what all the hullabaloo about his work on Anderson is about.

He's probably my favourite 2000 AD artist but, sadly, he's decline my invitation to take part in the Thrill-Cast :( However, he was *very* helpful with and generous with his time for the feature in the Shamballa edition of the Mega Collection.

Very good to hear. Have to admit that I don't bother with podcasts though. Prior to tuning into these, all I've listened to in full are a small number of episodes of ECBT2000AD - a few of its normal episodes (admittedly, just because they're a laugh and not for the weekly reviews - sorry, guys!), its Everything Starts... episodes but mostly its creator interviews, the latter-most of which is a big part of the reason that I've been tuning into the Thrillcast. Like Everything Starts... though, it also helps that the stories being covered aren't new ones being released and can thus be discussed in either the context of the time - very interesting - or in greater depth as to how they, for example, tie into later tales.

All to say: as long as there's more good guests, creators or otherwise, and further discussion of the stories in great depth, I'm in for as long as these continue. They've been a lot of fun so far.

I've enjoyed the 2000 AD series so far. I don't really care for podcasts in the main—they're usually far too long and full of self-indulgent tosh. The Thrill-Cast deftly avoids both of those issues.

I started listening to Sunnyside round about the time when our youngest was born, and I'd be up all night catering to her every whim - the headphones drowned out her caterwauling and and I could take comfort that somewhere out there people were able to take time to reflect on the doings of superheroes rather than the consistency and quantity of human excrement (little bit of satire there).

She's 5 and a half now. My needs haven't changed!

Indeed, I look forward to more funny openers when you feel so inspired. The thought of everyone greeting each other with "Borag Thungg" is going to be a hard one to top, mind.

Count Alan Grant as another person to be dragged back for more of these when relevant. Quite an interesting episode, though a little bit startling in my case when he mentioned his supernatural experience of seeing his dead gran as a child, something which also happened to me the night after my gran died, although unlike Grant, I'll happily account it to being completely sleep deprived and my insistence that I saw the ghost simply a child's confusion of emotions (she was the first family member that I had met and known for years to have died and I didn't immediately cry about it or really display any clear feelings about it at all until that point). The explanation for all his interest in the religious themes was especially insightful. Going to Sunday school from the age of three to sixteen really sounds like the sort of thing that would drive most young people away from actually believing in what they're being taught, especially if it was on top of regular school, which I don't believe he mentioned (I was taught all through primary and high school, which was difficult enough to put with - a Sunday school on top of that would've threw me over the edge at an even earlier age), but it's obvious why a fascination with the subject would at least be maintained and with research into other religions and what he was taught, why one might feel a bit cynical about how we delightful humans tend to act in god's name.

If there were any flaw this time around, it was a shame not more was said about Arthur Ranson and the process between him and Alan, if there was one, in creating some of the more jaw-dropping pages; but I guess such questions are better answered in his own interviews, probably on the web somewhere (or perhaps in this particular volume's end article, which I haven't yet reached).

Other than that, top stuff. Should be a fucking miserable episode next time when covering the Dredd story that has depressed me the most to read.

A weekend of lots of jobs around the house has meant I'd finally made the time to catch up with these. Fantastic stuff and really nice to hear a presenter who allows there to be a conversational style that opens up what the creator says without talking all over them. Something others could learn from!

Clearly not necessarily in the remit of this Podcast but would be lovely as things progress if as well as talking about the Mega-collection maybe a mini-feature about other 2000ad stuff could be dropped in. After all if the MegaCollection is succeeding in drawing in new readers would be lovely to point them to some of the other good stuff from the Galaxies Greatest?

So for example when talking to say Alan Grant you could drop in a five, ten minute chat with someone or other about say Mazeworld and those books? Kinda a ...

"And if you did like Shamballa you might also like to try..."

... thing?

It is a good story, but I can see why it could instil feelings of misery and depression in those who read it (especially if you're from a military background).  i.e. not because it's a bad story, but because of the themes and content.

Yeah, what sheridan said. It is a good story, a great one in fact (I feel less strongly about the sequel unfortunately), but out of all the darker Dredd tales I've read, I have to say that this one is thickest with a sense of hopelessness and nihilism. You'll no doubt see what I mean when you read it but I think that the reason it's so effective in this way compared to other darker series' I've read set in the universe is because, like America, Mandroid's focused on the lives of the citizens with one key difference being that Dredd is a more sympathetic figure at first towards the main character, which means even he is emotionally involved in his own way. That, and there's a greater sense of normality to Nate's family finding themselves in a poor block in the middle of the Big Meg, as well as what happens to them. i.e. This is the kind of thing we see all the time in Dredd but really up close and personal.

Been listening to this today and thought Pat Mills sounds different, and I don't think I have ever heard Simon Davis. (Have seen and heard Michael Molcher and Matt Smith

Not sure who's in charge after listening to both artist and author. Wether artist draws to the literature or if the literature is written to the art.

I really need to listen to this a second time, but have heard Pat Mills say his piece twice and thought about wether he was serious about some of what he said. Remembering when his talk of giants in found in Albion then and the rest of Tir-Nan-Og in the past is about Titans (If anybody noticed I left a comment on another thread about using the Greek name for this....well, anyway, I hadn't finished saying my piece about that one!) he did say -words to the effect- that in the past, episodes of Slaine giants seemed young or were drawn in a certain way. (If memory serves me correctly...) and just now I thought maybe the meaning of Tir-Nan-Og would later become Land of the Giants.

Not sure how to alter the original language there. Maybe a expert could help out with that.

Those other pocast I started listening to as well... both Kev Walker and Alan grant remembering the latter's talk of Dero's or Derro's

His saucy Sid James laugh is awesome - gets me thinking his interviewees are making dirty jokes if I zone out a bit while listening. It was great to hear Simon Davis and Pat Mills this week. Great Podcast - I hope the ones about the Mega Collection carry on as well. It's lovely to hear a new (to me) writer's take on Dredd & Anderson. I thought the discussion of humour in stories was apt. The recent sensitive klegg was a welcome break from Chaos Day misery. I'd love to see Anderson find some kind of happiness & regain her flippancy.

Part 2 was great - more of the same but much fun. I'd really like to hear from John Smith in future. I've never seen him at a convention but I'd love to hear about his thoughts on Devlin Waugh, Tyranny Rex, Indigo Prime etc

Johnny Vegas and Dirk Maggs are our VERY special guests on the latest Thrill-Cast as they talk about their love of 2000 AD, writing Judge Dredd for radio, any why Johnny's unlikely to appear in any movies soon! Plus: Gordon Rennie on swords and sandals epic series 'Aquila', this week's release from 2000 AD, your feedback, and 'My first Prog'! Yarp.  Johnny lives with Kreelman until he's twelve, in a 'Salisbury Mansion', then he's with the Mutant Army based near Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain until he's 17.  Then he's in prison (also apparently somewhere in Salisbury) before he leaves Earth altogether for the Doghouse.

Durham Red is from Milton Keynes? I thought she was from......er......Durham?

Red flashbacks to her 'first visit home' in prog 768 and walks past a 'welcome to Milton Keynes' sign - I suppose that could mean her first visit back to Earth, but she's come to see her sister...

It's later revealed that Durham is actually her (married) surname and Red is her nickname, but someone cocked up on her registration papers.  But that might not count, as Peter Hogan wrote that one.

For some reason I thought it was Clacton Fuzz and the Fenmen who came from Milton Keynes, but I'm probably just confusing that with the Milton Keynes Mutant Ghetto.

Anyway, I thought that podcast was excellent - very entertaining from start to finish! I loved all the reminiscing from your latter guests. I may go and listen back the audio version of Apocalypse War now,  with a nice cup of PG tips.

Interesting. I don't remember any of that. I'll have to have a look at the relevant Progs now.
I assumed the names were related to their hometowns like Clacton Fuzz etc.....

I thought Clacton Fuzz was from Essex (along with his son, Frinton - a couple of towns along from Clacton on Sea).

Milton Keynes is a Ghetto... Ghettos are usually where a population are forced to live. They might originate from all over...

So Durham Red was from Durham BEFORE the Ghetto for example. Frinton Fuzz and the Fenmen were almost certainly from the coast... That's where Fens are, well currently they are at the Wash, I'm guessing he either moved from Clacton or they got a Fen 'now'/'then'.

ETC...

The army comes from all over to get together. I don't have it to hand to check which bits actually get identified. But yeah...

Great to hear the Ian Edginton interview this week. Reading his Stickleback in collected form was one of the things that got me back into the prog. Looking forward to Helium - Edginton's worlds are always fascinating and D'Israeli always brings them to life beautifully. It was fascinating to hear more about how writers and artists team up to realise their stories after the glimpse Pat Mills provided when he talked about Slaine a few weeks back.

More wall paper stripping, more Podcast listening and this one was a gem (Ian Edginton one) really nice chat with Daniel Dwyer who really comes across as the fan made good. Some great little snippets from Mr Edginton, the connection to come with Helium and ... another of his strips, the vague mention of more Scarlet Traces type stuff to come. The dnagling idea of one day getting a character to tranverse the Edgi-verse BUTBUTBUTslipped in there, a little un-noticed did I not hear mention of a potential return to Leviathon, no ones mentioned it, did I dream it.

That would be great... well we don't need it as its complete on its own but if done well how can that not be great news?

Was the most entertaining so far for me, Edginton and Dwyer good guests. All I remember of Leviathan is the comment that it can't be continued; doesn't mean that sly Edginton droid didn't drop a hint. He's just the type.

A great listen, Ennis came across very well and far more modest than he has any right to be. The thrillcast gets better and better.

And as for the interloper heard to shout 'Are You Ed?' early in the proceedings ('Um, no'), I felt he was probably mistaking Tharg's PR droid for this guy (http://www.comicvine.com/ed-brubaker/4040-41468/).

To celebrate the imminent release of Dan Dare: The 2000 AD Vol. 1 we talk to Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons about 2000 AD's reboot of this venerable British character, which began in the first Prog in 1977! Pat discusses the battles getting the strip right and Massimo Bellardineli's staggering artwork, while Dave reveals how his childhood love for Dare filtered into his work on the series!

I have no ties to Dan Dare no real connection aside from a few strips I read as a pre teen and no knowledge of the 2000ad era at all prior to this so this episode had it work cut out but once again Thrillcast delights, hearing Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons talk with so much affection and passion really brought it to life and made me want to know and read more. Mission accomplished Molch-R, great stuff.

Just ordered Dan Dare after reading a bit of it in FCBD prog and enjoying it, and then hearing about the Hardback collection on the Thrillcast.

Would like some Thrillcasts tailored around the mega collection as I would like to hear Molch-R and others opinions on some volumes like Simping Detective which I am really enjoying and also Dead Man after hearing Simon Pegg saying he enjoyed it. Also hearing about current and upcoming prog and Meg stories would be cool.

Amazing that all the original art-work for Sooner or Later has been found by Kathryn Symes; its absence was one of the reasons why Brendan McCarthy preferred it not be collected and why only a few chapters appear in The Best of Milligan & McCarthy (http://www.amazon.com/The-Best-Milligan-McCarthy-Peter/dp/1616551534).

On the latest Thrill-Cast, Annie Parkhouse and Simon Bowland join us to discuss the invisible art of the letterer as we honour this often overlooked part of the comics industry, from the old days of paste and scalpels to modern computer techniques. Plus Tharg the Mighty returns to the podcasting sub-basement to answer YOUR questions!

Great stuff, as a matter of interest on who could potentially appear in upcoming thrillcasts, how many people who we haven't 'met' work in the Command Module?
- Tharg
- Cyber-Matt
- Molch-R
- SAM 2.0 + OZ-BRN-1
- graphic novels editor Keith Richardson and head of publishing Ben Smith (absence of droid names (that I can recall) suggests they work more for Rebellion than 2000AD, if that makes sense?)
- reprographics droid Kathryn Symes
- K-T Rex (has appeared in a thrill-cast but it was ages ago and I can't quite remember what this particular droid does, sorry!)

I know that at some times in the past thirty-eight years the editorial staff seems to have been very small - two or three people crammed into an office on the South Bank - though the list I've quickly compiled above doesn't feature an assistant editor (erm, apart from Cyber-Matt assisting Tharg, of course).

Yep; John Wagner is always a hoot.  (And doesn't Alan Grant's mother sound a lot like Middenface's granny?)

I've been binge-listening to these lately; I really love the creator interviews.  I got a bit of a thrill to find out that Simon Davis calls the prog 'Two Thou', which my brother and I used to call it when we were kids.  And that Brendan McCarthy used to sniff aerosols, hence 'chroming' in Mad Max. Also love how Cyber-Matt very casually drops expressions like 'longterm squaxx' into normal conversations (I remember being a bit dismayed at how Bish-OP tried to  get away from all that Thargy stuff; great to see it alive and kicking).

Keep up the good work, Molch-R and all else involved!

On the subject of John Wagner interviews (I'm enjoying the podcasts btw) it seems as good a place as anywhere else to post this. Interview with John Wagner, Jon Sanders and Alan Grant from the Sunday Telegraph magazine. Found it in my tat and scanned it. Undated, but I guess it's probably from late 1983 as it refers to the launch of the Dredd Eagle comics.

Apologies if I bust the width of this page, but hopefully people can read it.

(Must confess I'm curious about the Koo Stark Dredd t-shirt photo mentioned in the article.)

I was a bit confused when he was saying that he doesn't read comics. This is something that I've heard in a few interviews with artists and writers. I can understand that working in the field might mean you wouldn't read them for pleasure, but wouldn't you look at others' work out of professional curiosity at least?

I suspect John reads some occasional stories rather than reading comics. I can imagine that Tharg might occasionally ask him to read a story just so he knows what else is happening, especially now other writers are taking a bigger role.

[First up, great interview and always great to hear JW]

Yes, creators do tend to deny interest in reading comics (not just the mainstream ones, but everything). It's bizarre and veers towards snobbery which is odd in that it's the field in which they choose to work. Worthy of a follow-up question, that didn't happen.

Chaykin has said he doesn't read comics, there's no enjoyment there for him. But he [still] loves the craft of putting them together. This viewpoint does make sense to me.

As for the character to be killed off, a couple spring to mind. Knowing Wagner he might do the cool thing (I hope) of being a bolt from the blue, and avoid foreshadowing as far as possible. There is a problem now in that Wagner tales this year will include a virtual question mark on Dredd's supporting cast as things unfold. People have already starting guessing in this thread.

A common reason is to allow plausible deniability if somebody accuses them of stealing ideas.

But surely that logic would also mean that a writer shouldn't read novels or watch films?

Good God, it's not snobbery, it's a simple exercise in sanity-saving. You think chefs go home and cook the stuff they spend the whole day cooking up in the kitchen? It doesn't mean they don't appreciate a nice, well-cooked meal, but it does mean they have a very different relationship with the product to that of the punters.

I spend all day, every day looking at the pages of comics. I love comics. I love my job. But if you think that when I knock off at the end of the day, reading more comics is anywhere near the top (or even the middle) of my list of recreational activities, you're off your rocker.

Cheers

Jim

Well, quite, just as writers often do. I spend my day writing and reading non-fiction prose. I therefore rarely feel compelled to read non-fiction prose in my downtime. The important thing for a writer is they take in stories and ideas from elsewhere, and I can't imagine the Wagners and Rennies of this world never read anything.

I guess it all depends on the individual being interviewed and broadly sweeping all writers, pencilers, inkers, letterers, colourists, and whatever role you wish into one camp or another isn't doing anyone in the industry any favors. Just my two pence as someone who doesn't work in the industry, obviously.

The Wagner interview I have yet to listen to (well, part 2 and 3 anyway) it all but John Wagner seems like such a pleasant individual.

Glad you all enjoyed the Wagner interview, Squaxx! This week, writer Guy Adams and Jimmy Broxton talk to me about the new collection of Goldtiger, the iconic 60s comic strip that never was... An obscure Italian artist and a down-to-earth British writer came together to create a rival to Modesty Blaise that has lived in infamy.

This enthralling book lifts the lid on comics' most unsung creation and includes letters, scripts, interviews and sketches - all documenting the creation of the strip and the outlandish lives of its creators - plus its connection to 2000 AD!

The new Thrill-Cast episode is online and we're chuffed to welcome award-winning author of Zoo City, Shining Girls, and Moxy Land - Lauren Beukes - with her comics conspirator Joey Hi-Fi - otherwise known as book designer, artist, and writer Dale Halvorsen - to talk about growing up reading 2000 AD in South Africa, how Johnny Alpha helped them understand apartheid, bizarre censorship by the South African authorities, what it meant when Halo Jones got out, and how the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic affected both their careers.

He’s joined by co-conspirator, artist PJ Holden, to talk about ‘Grindstone Cowboys’ and 'The Lion’s Den’, what’s happened to everyone’s favourite lawman, and what’s in store for Mega-City One.

Veeeeeeeeeery happy to reveal that the legendary Mick McMahon is to be a guest on a future episode of The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast. Got a question for Mick? Post it on this thread and I'll do my best to include them in the interview...

On the latest 2000 AD podcast, we bid goodbye to 2000 AD reprographics droid, Kathryn Symes aka Kat-Scan, and discuss the challenges of breathing life into the comics of yesteryear, whether it's Judge Dredd, Dan Dare, or Misty! Kat's work on our graphic novels has been tireless and usually goes unnoticed by most readers, so we're sad to see her go.

We also talk to writer TC Eglington and artist Boo Cook about their new Dredd-universe series, Blunt, which has been years in the making and debuts in this week's Judge Dredd Megazine!

A seminal Judge Dredd artist and a towering figure in British comics, Mick McMahon is a remarkably humble and down-to-earth guy.

Originally brought in to mimic co-creator Carlos Ezquerra's art on Dredd's first stories, he went on to develop his own unique style and was responsible for the 'big boots' look of Dredd's outfit as well as many iconic covers and key moments for the future's greatest lawman.

He also brought new and inventive styles to Sláine and Ro-Busters before going on to co-create the incredible The Last American. The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast sits down for a two-part interview with one of the greatest 2000 AD artists of all time.

Great podcast as ever. The Thrillcast is always a highlight of my week when it comes out. It's fascinating hearing about the creative process and the talk of how comics were run back in the day is always an eye-opener.

This was a particularly interesting one for me as I have really clear memories of Scream and I'd always assumed I read the whole run as a 7-year-old, but hearing about stories here I realised I didn't really recognise any of them. I might have picked up one or two issues here and there but I doubt it was more than that. I seem to remember adverts (that I guess I would have seen in Buster or whizzer and Chips). I seem to remember an image of a kid reading the comic and a legion of ghouls and ghosts lining up behind him, presumably to get a read themselves.

I do have a clear memory of getting the 1985 holiday special, though, and I only knew from this podcast that the specials were kind of a cash-in after the comic had folded. I looked it up after listening to the podcast and recognised the cover image.

One thing I did manage to get the whole run of at around the same time is the comic School Fun. I kept them in a special drawer and had a vague idea they might be worth something in the future (in my mind at the time that probably meant 1989 or so), but of course my mum threw them away one day. I think the Scream holiday special suffered the same fate.

It's amazing that so many comics came out of the blue and disappeared just as fast in those days. It just seemed part of the fabric of the universe at the time (comics magically appeared on the newsagent shelf every week like milk on the doorstep, and sometimes they just weren't there anymore), but it was interesting to hear the inside story so many years later. The weird business shenanigans are just as fascinating to me as the stories about how the strips were created.

Really tempted to get that Monster graphic novel...

Brilliant bumper thrill-cast this week, with some great insights into how the comics were run and the censorship they went through. Enjoyed listening to both interviews, with Chris Lowder making me laugh out loud numerous times.

Looking forward to hearing Ben Wheatley next time, a film-maker whose work I enjoy very much. High-Rise was brilliant.

Been away camping for the weekend and while catching up with a mass of ironing finally got around to listening to the Ian Rimmer, Chris Lowder podcast and it was as interesting as I'd hoped.

We're so awash with interviews and what not these days that its really exciting to get a fresh perspective and Chris Lowder certainly provided that. Wonderful stuff. I'd love to hear more from Mr Lowder as there were hints as how he'd provide an alternative to the Mills' history of things - which while I love Uncle Pat there are always two sides to ever story.

Thank you, as always, for the feedback - particularly the kind words about the last episode, which was a hoot to do. Speaking of which...

This week I talk to Ben Wheatley, the acclaimed director behind Sightseers, Kill List, A Field in England, and High Rise, about his love of 2000 AD and the influence the Galaxy's Greatest Comic has had on his work - he talks about his films, his memories and the impact of reading 2000 AD classics, and reveals his current work with one of the all-time legends of 2000 AD.

Really interesting interview about Outlier - it made me think the story had depths to it I hadn't really appreciated until now and made me want to go back and take another look.

Also Pat Mills is always fun to listen to. I remember being fascinated by the girls' comics my sister read in the '80s. They seemed so much more grown up by the stuff about boys with catapults I was reading. The Four Marys was always a favourite of mine, mainly because I liked the title.

Yeah, there were some great stories. There was a strong fantasy or horror element to a lot of stuff and many of the stories had a bit of social commentary in them. Well, more than something like Buster anyway.

And the art always looked amazing after turning to them from my humour comics. I guess it's like Pat said: the artists had to handle a wider range of emotions so they were stretched a bit more with characterization. The boys' comics were all about either cheeky chappies playing pranks or hard men having fights. That said, being exposed to the realistic art and slightly more complex storylines of my sister's comics was probably my gateway to 2000 AD.

I right enjoyed this one (actually, I've right enjoyed all of them so far).  I definitely like the historical ones - casting light on stuff from my childhood and youth that, at the time, I had no idea of the creative process behind.  And Ben Wheatley was another good one - a non comics view of the galaxy's greatest.

If you haven't taken the plunge yet, do so. You won't regret it.

Another great podcast. The Chris Burnham and David Brothers interviews were the highlights for me. It might be a bit unfair, but I did think Frazer Irving gave the unfortunate impression that he is the chairman, treasurer and social secretary of the Frazer Irving Fan Club.

Just got to the six days of Fat City in The Daily Dredds Volume Two - as general wisdom is that a change in artists is due to something going missing, I'm guessing the first six went missing and were replaced by Steve Dillon.  How fast an artist is/was* Ian Gibson, anyway?

*'was' due to semi-retirement.

With the publication of The 2000 AD Script Book, we talk to four 2000 AD writers about how they create stories for the Galaxy's Greatest Comic http://www.2000adonline.com/post/1054

Rob Williams (Judge Dredd, Low Life) chats about how important choosing the right artist is, how he structures stories, and the differences with working in US and UK comics. Pat Mills (Sláine, Savage) discusses the changes in scriptwriting since the dawn of 2000 AD, how he balances research with storytelling, and how he works with different artists. Robbie Morrison (Nikolai Dante, Shakara) talks about the influences on his style, what he learned from working on epics such as Nikolai Dante, and about trusting artists. And Kek-W (The Order, Dreams of Deadworld) reveals how he turns ideas into scripts and overcomes writer's block.

Yeah would love to do something like that, unfortunately the limitations of the technology mean that we're unable to have more than two guests and a host on at any one time (bloody Skype) but I'll certainly see how we might be able to do that in the future.

“It’s real Roy of the Rovers stuff!” has been a cry of football commentators for decades – and in the latest episode of the award-winning 2000 AD podcast we talk to Barrie Tomlinson, the man who helped make Roy Race of Melchester Rovers a British institution http://2000adonline.com/post/1180

With the IPC Youth Group titles now part of the archive at 2000 AD’s publisher, Rebellion, in a two-part interview The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast talks to Barrie about the heyday of British comics, from overseeing 2000 AD and Battle to launching titles such as Scream, Speed, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Mask, Ring Raiders and many more.

With his uncanny knack for securing celebrity endorsements – which saw him rub shoulders with everyone from Paul Daniels and Eric Morecombe to Geoffrey Boycott and Suzie Dando – Barrie was probably one of the most successful editors in British comics.

As an editor at Fleetway/IPC, Barrie launched Roy of the Rovers as a stand-alone title selling 300,000 in its first week and also relaunched the venerable Eagle, introducing a whole new generation to Dan Dare alongside now legendary characters such as Doomlord and Max, the homicidal computer of The Thirteenth Floor.

Barrie’s influence on British comics for 30 years cannot be understated and it's a great time to hear a different perspective on the seminal period of the 1970s and 1980s.

The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast is the award-winning podcast that takes you behind-the-scenes at the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic! As well as interviewing top creators and famous fans, publicity droid Molch-R brings you announcements, competitions, and much more! You can subscribe to the Thrill-Cast on iTunes or listen now at www.2000ADonline.com/podcast

In Mega-City Zero writers Ulises Farinas and Erick Freitas took Judge Dredd from the streets of Mega-City One and into a bizarre inverted world where neither the city nor even the concept of law exist - how did the lawman survive in a world turned upside?

We talk to the writing duo about their vision of Judge Dredd and his world for IDW, pushing characters to the extreme and upsetting expectations, American attitudes to Dredd, their plans for the future, and writing Dredd against a background of controversy over police tactics in the US.

Yeah finally got to this (ironing again) and its a great listen. Interesting to hear them confirm so much of what I was thinking about the series. I appreciate its not for everyone but I've really enjoyed it, taking it for what it is, a great comic about Dredd in a completely different situation and the impact that has on him and its been nice to hear the thought processes behind it.

I'm also really looking forward to 'Blessed Earth'.

As the editor on Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing and the creator of Vertigo Comics, Karen Berger is a legendary figure in American comics. In this episode we talk to the renowned editor about her time as DC Comics' UK creator liaison, bringing 2000 AD creators such as Moore, Morrison, and Ennis over to the American industry, and the impact 2000 AD has had both on Vertigo and on the wider comics industry.

Just finished the Karen Berger interview and it was as fantastic a listen as you might image. Its no surprise that she has such a clear and rounded view of the 'British Invasion' and its impact but also the great work that was happening anyway at that time in the US, she mentions Matt Wagner who I think gets very overlooked from that time. There are others of course from Bob Burden, Dave Sim, Pete Bagge, Mike Baron, Paul Chadwick and many many more.

Its very easy to get a slighty narrow perspective on the shift in comics that took place in comics from the late 80s (a little surprised Karen mentioned the hailed three of Dark Knight, Watchmen and Maus all FANTASTIC comics but alongside so many great contemporaries) and focus on the undoubted impact 2000ad had. Comics were changing and 2000ad's impact on how that was shaped is massive, but the change was happening anyway.

You may suggest it but not being blessed with precognitive powers I did not know I wasn't going to enjoy it before I started.

I subscribe to the podcast and listen to most of them. I usually enjoy the Thrillcast.

As I wrote in my post, being a sensible chap, I didn't listen to two hours of it. I stuck with it until the Dante is Trump comment which I thought was bizarre (I think the co-creator did as well) and decided, not being a particular fan of the character, it wasn't worth me listening to it any further.

You said you didn't like Dante. That might have tipped you off to the fact that a two-hour Dante-specific podcast might not have been to your taste.

I've already said I thought it was going to be a challenging listen but feel free to cherry pick parts of what I've said to make a point. Call me a maverick but I decided to begin listening to the podcast anyway.

I don't like most of what Garth Ennis did for the prog and have read very little of his work elsewhere. However I find him really interesting to listen to.

Was great to hear Mills and Bisley chat about Slaine. Every image they mention came into my head straight away as they were talking, fully formed. Just shows how powerful and memorable the imagery was. I can even remember the severed fingers flying through the air.

And Simon Bisley has the delivery of a stand-up comedian. I'd pay to watch an Edinburgh show of just him talking.

Yeah just to echo this one of my favourites to date an absolutely fantastic listen. The stories of John's early days I could have happily kept listening to for hours, alas Molch-R had to go on about comics!

But yeah another order of Marney off the back of the podcast as event though I love John Stokes art its not a strip I know or immediately caught my imagination. On the back of this I'm sold.

I think the word used most often in their chat is lovely, which seems like the most appropriate word to describe the episode itself.

Highly recommended, if only as relief from the usual comic creator biography of youthful enthusiasm ground down by a cruel and exploitative industry.

I had no idea who Stokes was when I reluctantly pressed play, so I was surprised to learn I'd been enjoying his work every month in the greatest ongoing comic of the nineties*

As well as being an all round lovely bloke, what comes across in the interview is his delight in the medium and how he has embraced change. I loved the image of him swearing away in his office while he learned to use Photoshop in one day.

The Kelvin Gosnell interviews were really interesting.
He's an interesting character - very sharp - great recollections from so many years ago.
Shame that all the talent don't see eye to eye after all these years but it happens in every workplace.

Very small point - Star Wars did come out in the UK nearly a whole year later in 1978.
I think Mike pushed the 1977 line (I know its a very QI alarm ringing wrong answer!)

Star Wars premiered on December 27th 1977 in the UK, so technically Gosnell was correct.

It didn't have I wide release until '78, which is when I caught it.

Fascinating two-parter with Kelvin Gosnell there! And sobering to remember that although 2000AD is clearly something he's dead proud of, it's just one relatively small part of what sounds like a pretty high-flying career in UK journalism.

Must make for quite an interesting relationship with your senior managers when you know that all them have faced death and killed people on a daily basis.

I think the word you're looking for there is "sobering"...

Great stuff.

Digging the potato beds today so got through The Last Jedi and the two part Kelvin Gosnell thrill casts.

They were great - especially learning the older history from Kelvin and the changes (or not) to style and work ethic made by Jock and Chris Weston. Who is Tonchy btw?

Just caught up with the Mark Russell (writer of the upcoming IDW mini) interview and it confirms everything that made me so pleased that he was having a crack at Dredd. The fella is so smart and insightful and i'm really looking forward to this now.

Cracking stuff.

Yes the new IDW Dredd by Mark Russell looks good. Hopefully this time around IDW do not stuff up Dredd.

Surprised no one has talked up the Arthur Ranson Roundtable - what a treat that was! It has fired me up to dive back into my trades of Button Man and Mazeworld yet again to unpick more artistic goodness.

I imagine it was quite a bit of work to set up with all those guests, but would love to hear one of these on some other 2000AD / UK comics greats. I can't see it happening, but if a panel of comics experts was ever bold enough to tackle the output of Mr. Pat Mills it would be a wonder to listen in on...

While doing some window cleaning today I've been catching up with the Thrillcast and have to say two of the San Deigo panels have been brilliant.

Both the British Comics and the Supercop or Satire panels were fantastic. In both cases the panel members took the opening ideas and moved the conversation into fascinating insightful places. Both were fantastic listens.

More of this type of stuff please.

Fantastic tribute. Lovely to hear from all the superstars, but Matt Smith's kind words (https://youtu.be/ee7WeArQQGw?t=1184) were especially welcome.
