Cadet Anderson: Teenage Kyx
"When the psychically powerful three-year-old CASSANDRA ANDERSON killed her abusive father, she was taken into the custody of Justice Department, who blocked the memories of her traumatic childhood. Inducted into Psi-Division as a cadet, where the Judges use telepaths, empaths, precogs and others with psychic abilities to aid the fight against crime, Anderson is thrown in the deep end as she faces up to the worst Mega-City One has to offer."

2000 AD's Greatest: Celebrating 40 Years of Thrill-Power!
"From humorously twisted Future Shocks to the dystopian escapades of Judge Dredd, 2000 AD has inspired generations of readers and has spawned some of the greatest talents in the comics industry. To celebrate the creative droids behind the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, a selection of writers and artists from across 2000 AD’s forty-year history were asked to choose their favourite one-off story by a fellow creator and explain why they chose it. The result is this incredible anthology featuring work by Alan Grant, Kevin O’Neill, Rob Williams, Brian Bolland, Chris Weston and Steve Dillon selected by creators such as founding editor Pat Mills, celebrated artist Jock and recent newcomer Tom Foster."

The Order: Die Mensch Machine
"In 13th Century Germany, while reading the papers of her dead father young Anna Kohl uncovers a shocking secret – that defending Earth from an other-worldly menace is a secret cadre of warriors known only as The Order. Now she, and her father’s rag-tag former comrades, must do battle with the sinister forces of these eldritch creatures!  From Teutonic Knights with robot heads to gun-toting warriors in high speed pursuits on the streets of Elizabethan Engand, The Order is an incredible genre mash-up of medieval and Renaissance history, action movies, Michael Moorcock, Jack Vance, and Hammer Horror!"

Kingdom - Aux Drift
"In the far future, mankind has been all but destroyed and survivors are forced to hide from ‘Them’ – giant insectile creatures that have taken over the world – with only savage genetically engineered dog-soldiers like Gene the Hackman to guard them. Having travelled the Earth without his pack, Gene now leads a band of mongrel “aux” warriors known as the Wild Bunch. They live alongside some human survivors in The Kingdom. But ‘Them’ are growing in number and the Kingdom is getting harder to defend…"

Duncan Fegredo only ever drew two stories in the prog The Bad Juve and The Runner (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=droid&page=profiles&choice=duncanf) - both Dredd tales.  He did a few more for the Meg and some work in Crisis, but I think that's it for the House of Tharg...

This has come up before. I'm pretty sure Rebellion are confident that their legal advice on Zenith holds true for Luke Kirby as well. ISTR some comment on FB from MacKenzie that the new collection was news to him…

Si Spencer & Jake Lynch’s Scando-thrill HAVN debuts in Meg 382.

Has anybody mentioned elsewhere that this is the very same Meg that sees the fruits of Rebellion’s recent IPC purchase make it’s presence felt in the floppy? First cab off the rank is The Lawless Touch by Kelvin Gosnell (aka Starlord) & Barrie Look Out For Lefty Mitchell from the pages of Tornado

Jumping on Prog 2023 sees the start of a run of Dredds by John Wagner (remember him?)
First up is Get Jerry Sing with Carlos, followed up by the Mechanismo story with John McCrea which is entitled Harvey.

Also beginning in Prog 2023 are:

Pat Mills & John Higgins re-unite for the final series of Greysuit: Foul Play
The Fall of Deadworld: Cursed by Kek-W & Dave Kendall
Scarlet Traces: The Cold War Book 2 from Edgy & D’izzy
Defoe: Die Hards courtesy of Mills & Colin MacNeill

Oh & the FCBD 2017 Prog features:

Judge Dredd: Forty Years of Hurt courtesy of Matt Smith & Phil Winslade
Anderson vs Trapper Hag by Dabnett  & the wonderful Euro-stylings of Dani
A Blackblood solo story from Mills & Kel Zama
Hope by Guy Adams & Jimmy Broxton
The Dreams of Deadworld again by Kek-W & Dave Kendall

If there is nothing above that sends your thrill circuits abuzz then there is something wrong with you

Very excited and not entirely surprised to hear that the IPC stuff is being used to pad out the floppies. Tharg was getting low on the 2000ad stuff and not all of it will be commercially viable (I'm guessing) on its own and this is a wonderful way to get it out there and hopefully will have a bit of a boost for the Meg as well.

Good stuff Tharg and his minions.

Skizz - hopefully this will be complete. Titan/Best of 2000AD/RebellionDC reprints have all had either 1 or 3 pages committed. Where the missing pages were reinstated, amendments to the opening text of the following page remained edited. Given that this is a stylistic feature of much of More's work, I'd hope that the original text can be reinstated, as well as the missing pages.

40th Anniversary Special (https://forbiddenplanet.com/213093-2000ad-40th-anniversary-special/)

"To celebrate an incredible four decades of continuous weekly publication, 2000 AD marks its 40th birthday with a 48-page bumper special, packed with all-new stories from the cream of comics talent.

"There’s a brand-new case for Judge Dredd courtesy of John Wagner and Steve Dillon; Hammerstein and Ro-Jaws take their revenge on Howard Quartz in ‘Ro-Busters’ by Pat Mills and Clint Langley; we return to the mad, mad world of Zombo by Al Ewing and Henry Flint; Nikolai Dante gets the party started in ‘Devil May Care’ by Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser; a young Slaine shows that he’s got what it takes to join the Red Branch, courtesy of Pat Mills and Simon Davis; plus much more!"

And look!  Carlos Ezquerra has even drawn some dots around the guns for us!

Wow!

FP's listing is out of date - Steve sadly passed away before he could start work on the strip. I believe it's now being drawn by Carl Critchlow.

Very sad that there won't be a postumous strip.

How many variant covers are planned for this 40th Anniversary Special or will it just be the one?

Sounds amazing.

A damn shame Steve Dillon never had the chance to contribute as planned.
Can I take a stab in the dark that the story will feature the return / final appearance of Judge Prager?
The Critchlow Droid was the only other artist to draw that character, and it just feels like something TMO would do.

The Alan Moore book is superb, and it's notable that a lot of it includes Time Twisters, too. (I suppose they might be in the FS volume, but who knows?)

So we can assume that the Mind Wars, Timequake & Starlord Stront in colour collections are scheduled for the 40th anniversary of Tooth’s sister comic in 2018 then?  ;)

Considering I have little experience with FS and comments like yours, I think I'll get the Alan Moore book to begin with - thanks. I have not heard of Time Twisters, although I assume they are similar to FS if they are included.

Regarding that Starlord cover above, what kind of badge did it come with? If I was a lad in the late 70's that would have been very enticing!

My copy doesn't have a badge, but I believe they had one of six types of sticker, each depicting a different regiment of starlord troopers.

So obviously by Kevin O'Neill.

I think that somehow I ended up with two of these. Robot regiment and Tank Commander. I drove over one with an armchair so it's a bit battered.

Thanks for posting the images of those badges - they are very cool and would make good t-shirt graphics. Who wouldn't want ro be a Tank Commander or Time Warden!? The B&W Photos dosent do them justice as they look much more vibrant in colour.

I would be more than happy to have the excellent Mind Wars story bound in one lovely volume.

BTW never mind Kevin O'Neill's badges, who's responsible for the dreadful depiction of Johnny Alpha (at least I assume it's meant to be Johnny Alpha) on that Starlord no.1 cover?

Edit: Just checked Barney, it's Ramon 'Flesh' Sola. Hmm. He should have used line art.

Same format, more or less – just more time-travel oriented. The Moore book includes all his shorts – Future Shock, Time Twisters, and a few other bits (such as the complete Abelard Snazz). If you can track down a copy, it's one of the best Rebellion volumes you'll find.

Suffering from an inoperable cancer, he’s also the head of a special squad that enforces The Accord, a diplomatic treaty made in the sixteenth century between the throne of England and the powers of Hell. Together with the psychotic Guv’nor, Harry uncovers a secret demon-killing cadre working on behalf of the church…

But as the apprenticeship begins a new, bestial horror begins to stalk those unfortunate enough to wander alone at night in the woods. Will the burgeoning magician be powerful enough to confront the monster? To enter this world of wonder, childhood innocence must be sacrificed…

Beyond Watchmen and Judge Dredd: The Art of John Higgins
Watchmen, Judge Dredd, Hellblazer, Before Watchmen, Razorjack: John Higgins has been the artist or colourist on some of the most iconic comic books of recent years. Here, collected together for the first time, is the best of Higgins breathtaking work. Alongside never before seen preliminary drawings of now iconic characters, the book includes insights into the career of the comic book artist. Before Coloring the Watchmen [earlier title? - Dash] is partly an essential book for all enthusiasts and partly an instruction manual for those wanting to understand just what it takes to land a contract with DC Comics.

Woo-hoo - the only thing not making me wish March come earlier is the 40th anniversary special (and all the progs, etc).

What is their target demographic for a cover like that...

You realize a good chunk of MLP fandom are teens and young adult males, yes? Because the show is exceptionally well made apparently. I didn't get into it (ended up getting pulled in by Adventure Time, and Homestuck, myself) but the demographic is 'young adults'.

Personally I'm more concerned that from a casual glance at a distance, ol' Judge Pinkie Pie there looks like she's ejaculating. Clearly channeling Judge Dredd's more homoerotic side.

Why a man would ever watch MLP I will never understand. You can make the worlds best quality cartoon about little girl ponies or princess fairies or what have you, but I still wouldn't watch it. The subject matter is more important than how well made it is. I don't judge what others watch (that's Dredds job) but I personally don't get the appeal. The only cartoons I watch on occasion are the ones I grew up with, namely GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man etc.

I agree that, at a quick glance, the image does look as you described...but isn't that where glue comes from? :o

... a man ...

Is there such a thing?  I don't really care for MLP myself, but I enjoy plenty of 'cutesy' cartoons - the Tinkerbell movies, for example - so I can certainly see why others mighy. The 'subject matter' isn't really talking ponies (or fairies), it's friendship and family, perseverance in adversity,  integrity and forgiveness, the ability to learn and change and accept change: much like all drama.

To read or care about fantasy fiction in general requires a modicum of whimsy in a person's heart.

It's been 30 years since those glorified toy commercials aired, cartoons have grown up a lot and are more nuanced then ever. If I'm honest with myself, animation is the best it's ever been right now, at least in terms of writing. I'm not saying MLP is for everyone, but I I'm saying Stephen Universe is.

Everybody has some solid points and I don't disagree. Note the part where I said I don't judge what others like, but that I don't necessarily understand the appeal.

Good points Cosh - I have nothing against kids stuff, I read a ton of comics (and collect the odd toy) for gruds sake! The subject matter of the books i read, however, differs from ponies (more death, less ponies. not that ponies are bad). However, my daughter loves Pepe Pig and I watch it way more often than I would like!

Oh, and Happy birthday Tharg!

Maybe it's to do with honoring Steve Dillons recent passing? I think it was one of his more popular stories.  And also yes, this was probably easier to sell than fungus Dredd...although I hear he's a funguy. Sorry...

It's Matt Smith's favourite Dredd story - I don't know if that's raised its profile at all, but it can't have hurt. And no-one ever drew a better werewolf than Steve Dillon (not least on the terrifying cover of Scream! issue 8.)

Damn straight. Not sure Cry Of The Werewolf is obscure at all; outside the epics [2], it'd be first on most people's list of stories to read, alongside The Midnight Surfer, Pirates Of The Black Atlantic, and The Haunting Of Sector House Nine [3].

It's one of the stories even casual readers always remember, which is presumably why when IDW asked McRea how he fancied following up Mars Attacks, this is what sprung to mind.

Me and my pal laughed our wee heads off at the idea Dredd could have been stuck as a werewolf if they hadn't found the cure. We aren't creative geniuses, so I assume the same thing occurred to wee boys in Belfast too.

[1] Dillon died October 22nd. McRea's quick, but it would have to be a very quick turnaround for this to have been written, drawn, and published in response to that sad event.

[2] ... and PJ Maybe/Dark Judges, obviously

[3] My personal list of longer Dredd stories worthy of attention would include Crazy Barry/Banana City, Requiem For A Heavyweight, Revolution, The Executioner, Our Man In Hondo, The Black Plague, and The Alabammy Blimps

Good point regarding the turnaround time Frank. I naturally saw this as paying respects to Dillon but that would have been very quick. I would have liked if cry of the werewolf was longer as it was a fun idea and drawn incredibley well, but i suppose the fast pace plotting and high action is one of the reasons it is so great. Regardless, Im looking forward to this one shot! (Have we seen any interiors yet??)

As always Frank, I appreciate your detailed responses (and the links/images you include!). So much thrill power to look forward to!

According to this thread Case Files #30 comes out this November, 2017 (released at the rate of 2 a year). At this rate, shouldn't Case Files 34 should come out in two years (not six)?

Also, this cover by Ryan Brown looks amazing! If they are shipped in 50/50 quantities I will pick up Brown's cover.

Just home from Forty Years of Thrill-power, and two art droids had covers to show for the IDW Werewolf, plus John McCrea had interiors sans dialogue.  I tried to look through without paying too much attention to what was actually going on so it isn't spoiled for me when I read it with words!  Looking forward to it even more - though it's anybody's guess which of the covers I've seen I'll actually end up owning, depends on which one IDW sends to my local comic shop.
: Re: Forthcoming Thrills 2017
: Mardroid 12 February, 2017, 03:54:54 PM
I don't tend to follow the IDW stuff much, preferring to stick to our 2000AD 'verse(s), as it were... I did get Matt Smith's year one stuff, and the Anderson stuff. I reasoned that as the a 2000 AD creator was on board, and the Dredd story covered a time period that hasn't been covered extensively in 2000 AD and the Megazine, than there was no reason the story couldn't have happened in both continuities. (Is that personal head canon?) And the stories were pretty good.*

I am intrigued by the werewolf story though, branching as it does from something in the 2000 AD continuity. I also remember after reading the original story, feeling a bit disappointed they hadn't spent more time with Dredd as a werewolf.

And I like werewolves. The big nasty ones with proper wolfish type heads like depicted here...

Hmm. I might get this...

*I guess another reason is that I'm so invested in Dredd already, reading 2 comics and the collections (mainly the Mega-collections in my case rather than the Case-Files, although I have a few of those.), etc. If I read other comics outside of 2000 AD, I'd prefer it not to be related worlds and characters, as a bit of variety is nice. I don't intend this as a criticism of those who want to read everything Dredd. (I can understand the obsession.) This is just a personal preference.

It's not just you - to me the Year One / Matt Smith Anderson are in our continuity, not IDWs.

I couldn't get through Transformers when I tried to re-watch it years back. Bar the movie, it's badly written crap. But now with mini-IP, I'm very much taken by a small number of shows for kids. That fair - I think the only reason I find some of these watchable is due to nostalgia. I have some nephews who are starting to get into these old cartoons (or commercials as some have said haha) and get to watch a little here and there with them.  I have never heard of most of the cartoons people are mentioning, Including Hey Duggee - I will have to give it the ol google/YouTube search.

How Comics Work
This "How It's Done" series reveals insider hints, tips, and tricks from one of the world's greatest comic creators in his own words. The artist behind juggernauts like Watchmen and The Green Lantern, Dave Gibbons is here to teach you scriptwriting, page layouts, lettering, cover designs, and more, and he's doing it with scans of original artwork and rarely seen workings to illustrate his personal creative processes.

How Comics Work covers both Gibbons' hand-drawn and digital design techniques in depth. An early adopter of computer design in comic creation, all his lettering is digital, and he even has his own 'hand-lettered' font. This is your chance to gain insight to Gibbons' digital work, from his computer coloring and 3D modelling with Angus McKie on Give Me Liberty, to his work on The Originals using digital greytones. You'll learn how he layers text for editing, creates effects such as flares and neon glows, and prepares artwork for print and online.

Same format, more or less – just more time-travel oriented. The Moore book includes all his shorts – Future Shock, Time Twisters, and a few other bits (such as the complete Abelard Snazz). If you can track down a copy, it's one of the best Rebellion volumes you'll find.
It leaves out his two non-Snazz Robo-Tales and his earliest Future Shock, 'A Holiday in Hell!'

Also 'Southern Comfort', but no one seems sure if he wrote that one or not.

'A Holiday in Hell!' was in the 1980 Sci-Fi Special. It's almost his first professional work under his own name, but was beaten to it by 'Black Legacy' in Doctor Who Weekly by a couple of weeks.

'Southern Comfort' was in the following year's special. It's credited to the pseudonymous R.E. Wright, but Moore's supposed to have had at least one hacked-about script go out under a false name, and this has been identified as a likely suspect.

'Killer in the Cab' (Prog 170) and 'The Dating Game' (Prog 176) were his first contributions to the weekly, went out under the Robo-Tales banner and were missed out from the Complete Future Shocks.

Bloody annoying 'How Comics Work' priced at £20 on Amazon UK but only $16 (£12) on Amazon US where I accidentally went first. Bloody Brexit / Trump / Daily Mail! (delete as appropriate)

Still not 12 quid but the price is slightly improved:

How Comics Work (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/2888933411) - £16.99

That granite-y title font is reminiscent of the classic Judge Dredd logo and the "Rogue" part of Rogue Trooper.

Yes, indeed.

Never had chance to read more than a few episodes of this strip before, but super glad it's all being collected. Something I hoped would happen at some point.

Prime Steve Dillon art - so an essential purchase, I'd say.

Sorry moly and Spikes, that was a joke of mine.  Obviously not a good one.  The other Laser Eraser is from one of the Fleetway funny comics. :-[

I'll drop the reference off the next list.

I'm intrigued by that Dave Gibbons book. Is it going to be how comics are made or more Scott McCloud, Will Eisner type terriitory? Be interesting if its the latter and from Mr Gibbons I could well see that being the case.

The Third Law (Rico Dredd: The Titan Years)
"You know about me. I’m Rico Dredd, Joe Dredd's big brother. I'm the clone that went bad, that brought shame on Judge Fargo's legacy. I was a Judge, the best the Academy of Law ever turned out. The very best. But after less than a year on the streets of Mega-City One, I was brought down, taken in. It was Little Joe who caught me; second-best Judge there’s been. Broken, sentenced, stripped of office, I was shipped out to the brutal moon Titan, to do my twenty years' hard labour. Yeah, you know about Rico Dredd. But do you know what really happened? Why I did it? What it was like, out there on the edge of space, doing time in the Bronze? Truth is, mister, you know stomm about me."

Scarlet Traces: Empire of Blood
"The first novel set in the War of the Worlds universe from the cult comic book hit Scarlet Traces, picking up the story directly from the climax of H.G. Wells' classic.

"November 1898, four months after the Martians' failed invasion of the United Kingdom, leaving priceless technology scattered among London's ruins. As reconstruction begins, Germany sends men and resources to aid in the recovery; not entirely trusting Kaiser Wilhelm's goodwill, the Queen's spymaster sends his trusted agent Ampney Crucis to spy on the German workers.

"In the shadows of the city, mutilated bodies are turning up in the new slums. With so many still missing and so much still to be done, the case is all but overlooked, handed over to the police department's most junior detective, Valentine Bey. As Bey begins his investigations, he crosses paths with Crucis, and the two men discover a plot that could change the world.

Something survived the War of the Worlds; something that lives still under London. And there are many who would kill to get their hands on it..."

He's a write-for-hire type, if that's the correct phrase.  He's contributed short stories and novels to various lines (Sherlock Holmes, Star Wars, Skylanders, etc), he's written scripts for Big Finish audios (Doctor Who, Blake's 7), written for the Beano, etc.

I'm sure I've got a BBC CD somewhere (radio pantos?) that he did the liner notes for.

He's been writing Doctor Who media since at least the early 2000's, when he wrote his first Doctor Who audio for Big Finish. He's certainly done a few Doctor Who comic strips in his time.

It's one of the story strips Rebellion acquired last year in their buy-up of part of the IPC/Fleetway back catalogue.  They're releasing these under a separate (non-2000AD) Classic British Comics line, which also includes The Leopard from Lime Street and Ken Reid's Faceache strips.

My apologies guys, I've been fooled by the Amazon UK listing.

There's definitely two separate books listed on Amazon, one for the classic Hookjaw and another for the new version with Si Spurrier (which I didn't link to, but here (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/178276805X); also coming from Titan Comics).  If I had bothered to look I might have noticed Amazon UK have the same internal spreads showing for both books.

Look Out For Lefty is now scheduled for floppy with Meg 386 according to the latest issue of Previews.

In the Meg proper there shall be:

The return of those Dark Judges in Dominion by John Wagner & Nick Percival.
More movie Dredd with Furies by Arthur Wyatt, Alex De Campi & Paul Davidson - not to be confused with the Hunted storyline of the same name that will be running in the prog simultaneously.
But more importantly Harry Heston is back!!! in Ape Escape, once more from Wyatt & Lynch.

Scarlet Traces say what now?? Has it been retroactively revealed that other Edginton series like Stickleback, Leviathan, Ampney etc. actually take place in the same universe as ST?

It never occurred to me this could be, but I only discovered Scarlet Traces when Rebellion released the first volume trade pb. I just thought they were all slightly alt-reality parallels of our own history (and of each other as well). What all might that include? I vaguely recall reading something about a Time Traveler (Wells' chronic argonaut) strip in 2000AD somewhere, not sure if that was IE.

They are mostly separate worlds, (referred to by some fans as the 'Edgiverse' although I don't think that's an official name)  but there is a bit of crossover. I remember a librarian in Stickleack appearing in Red Seas the for example, I but he lives in a place with many doors, to other worlds. A kind of hub,  if you like.

I might be getting those stories confused with Edginton's H.G. Seward stories... EDIT - Sorry, I meant "Sewell", not "Seward"... I guess the character from Stoker's Dracula must have popped into my head at that moment. Now that I think about it, "Sewell" is an anagram for Welles, not Wells, or maybe Edginton's intent was to have him as an amalgam of both?

I know that's what's featured on the cover, and presumably the first (and probably the longer) of the two stories reprinted.

I didn't know if they sometimes filled out those Extreme Edition reprints with some other thematically-related story (the second story is "Tempus Fugitive", which is a pretty obvious pun, so it was a long shot), just to make the page count add up correctly.

But of course since Edginton wasn't credited, I already suspected as much... it's just what showed up when I searched the 2000AD shop for "Tempus Fugitive". I'll have a look at Barney and try to find the title as a Judge Dredd story.

I did feel sorry for old Sewell (Wells) though as time after time (ahem) his escape plans were thwarted by mean old Dreddy. I loved his facial expressions each time Dredd put the boot into a new futuristic version.

Maybe one day we shall see the return of him and he will get his opportunity to beat the system and tell Dredd tempus fugit...

Stickleback looks REALLY interesting and I can't believe that's all there is to the character, simply a sockpuppet for Holmes. If Stickleback were to (be allowed to) return, then a revelation that all is not as it appeared would be prerequisite... otherwise, it's just a Holmes story in mufti. What if "Holmes" turned out to be Sewell? Or one of them, anyway...

I checked out D'Israeli's art on the link to his blog you provided, and it looks really different in Stickleback, compared to Scarlet Traces. It almost looks a little influenced by artists like Richard Sala and Peter Kuper (which is a very good thing).

I guess the real question would be whether the apparent reveal/ending of the series has poisoned the well as far as the potential audience is concerned.
: Re: Forthcoming Thrills 2017
: positronic 07 June, 2017, 06:54:32 AM
I just read MISTY Vol. 1, "Moonchild" and "The Four Faces of Eve". Moonchild was good but it seems to me the art suffered by reduction in size (and, I'm just guessing here, but I suspect some of the fine detail has dropped out). The artwork in Four Faces of Eve fared much better in translation. I enjoyed both stories.

The little biographical sections at the back got me very curious to see Misty (pictured on the cover of the trade, but not inside except for a couple of small spot illo's). I had no idea she was an actual character with a strip of her own, although I guess I would have suspected she might be the comic's host, making some brief appearances, not unlike Tharg in 2000AD. I mention this as a way of leading up to asking what the contents of MISTY Vol. 2 might be (obviously I'm hoping to see some actual stories with Misty, as I'm very curious about the character now). Anyone know?

I've read a good chunk of Misty over the last few years and I don't recall Misty appearing in a strip beyond the art poem introductions and some introductions for specific strips - like a Tharg's Future Shock. I may be wrong though.

Volume 2 will contain The Sentinels which personally I love. Twin tower blocks dominate a ruined post-industrial landscape. People start to go missing.
Every review then spoils it but I'll refrain here.
It is a good dark story though. ]
I'm not sure what the other strip collected will be.
: Re: Forthcoming Thrills 2017
: positronic 08 June, 2017, 12:37:50 PM
I think I was misled by the phrasing of the biographical text about Shirley Bellwood... something to the effect that she'd "illustrated every appearance of Misty in the comic" (not an exact quote as I haven't got the book right in front of me), which led me to believe Misty had appeared in actual stories. I was very disappointed to find that pages like the one I posted above, some few poster giveaways (as used on the cover of Vol. 1), several covers and small pictures used on the letters pages are all there were. Still, it would be nice to see an extensive gallery of those intro pages, covers, and posters of Misty as drawn by Shirley Bellwood, whose work really impressed me.

The merest hints about the character Misty imply that she's somewhat of a more girl-friendly version of Warren Publishing's Vampirella (although the precise nature of Misty's being remains a mystery), and Shirley Bellwood's illustrations would certainly have made her a worthy contender by comparison to Warren's star Vampi artists like Jose Gonzales or Enrique Torres, so it's a shame Misty never got any actual stories, even if they'd been only illustrated text short stories such as many comics carried in past decades.

"I guess the real question would be whether the apparent reveal/ending of the series has poisoned the well as far as the potential audience is concerned."

I think the delay in following it up has robbed the tale of some of the momentum. Those seven days which followed the reveal of the Dead Man's identity dragged. If I'd had to wait three years for the next episode anything that followed could only have been anticlimactic.

: TordelBack 08 June, 2017, 09:12:46 PM
My only problem with the Stickleback reveal is that it was done at a time of Peak Sherlock, so it was a bit... obvious.  The bigger issue for the strip is that it has essentially been recast as a ground-level follow-on to War of the Worlds, and the Edgy/Dizzy gestalt entity has done/are doing elements of that already with Scarlet Traces and maybe Helium... throw in Ampney Crucis' (and Jack Dancer's) occult interdimensional shenanigans (never mind LoEG) and the ground seems quite (very) crowded.

The Holmes reveal per se didn't bother me (I thought from the start he was a Holmesian character, although I was guessing Moriarty); if he'd suffered some horrific accident/amnesia/transformation/etc there still would have been plenty of stories begging to be told. It was the fact he literally steps out of a body suit and there's Holmes in his tweed and spats - 'Right-o, let's save the world.'

Not massively excited about the strips running up to 2050, thouhg happy to see more Grey Suits and a Cornwell and Wagner Dredd is a nice prospect. BUT having Indigo Prime back is fantastic news, especially if John Smith is still on board.

Judge Dredd: Case Files 30
"The remnants of East-Meg One want Judge Dredd to pay for destroying their city. Who better to hunt him down than Orlok the assassin – the man responsible giving the East-Meg an upper hand in capturing the Big Meg during the Apocalypse War.

Meanwhile, crime lord Nero Narcos puts his lethal plan to depose the Judges into action. Even with help from the  Brit-Cit Justice Department, Judge Anderson, DeMarco and a brand new Mark II Lawgiver, Mega-city won’t be able to get out of this crisis unscathed!"

Misty vol 2
"Following up our hit first volume of the ‘horror comic for girls’ with another collection of two stories: The Sentinels and End of The Line.  Misty was a revolutionary concept by 2000 AD’s creator Pat Mills in 1978 and left its mark on a whole generation of young women. The two identical tower blocks, known as  ‘The Sentinels’ to the locals, stand tall over the town of Birdwood – but only one is occupied while the other remains mysteriously empty. When Jan Richards’ family lose their home they decide to hide out in the abandoned block so they can stay together, only to be sent into a parallel world where the Nazis conquered Britain in 1940… In End of the Line, Ann’s father was one of a group of engineers believed to have been killed whilst working on an extension to the London Underground but when she and her mother are invited to the opening of the new train tunnel, Ann discovers a mysterious time portal through which several workers are being kept as slaves by an evil Victorian called Lord Vicary."

The Beatles Story
"The original long-lost Beatles graphic novel!

This was the very first graphic novel to chart the creation, evolution and break-up of the fab four, first published in 1981. The Beatles Story is an exceptionally drawn account of the band from one of the UK's leading artists of his generation, Arthur Ranson (Batman, Judge Dredd, Button Man). Written by Angus Allan it includes fascinating insights into Paul McCartney and John Lennon's first encounter, their early gigs in Hamburg Kaiser Keller, in Hamburg, through to the recording of the legendary Abbey Road album to the band's break-up.

First published in the pages of legendary UK youth magazine Look In, this beautifully illustrated account is a treat for both the devoted Beatles admirer and new fans alike. This new edition is published in the Treasury of British Comics line, a series devoted to restoring lost comics classics."

Great to see that Brass Sun is continuing in reprint form, albeit in a rather more slender volume.

As for Devlin Waugh, I hope it'll be great, but to me that's one of those characters so closely aligned with its writer that it seems very odd someone else is taking it over.

To be honest, it doesn't really seem all that odd when you realise the last story was ten(!) years ago. Ten years...!

I would fervently hope that John's given this his blessing, but by this point I would prefer any Devlin stories to none.

Ten Years Ago, with a... if not a cliffhanger... a set up for a return that has never materialized. Devlin was one of those characters that got me into 2000 AD, with the DC collections, and when that story ran early on when I started reading the Meg I got really excited.

Then 10 years passed.

Its tough when a writer gets replaced (and a bit odd, when that writer is still semi-active. See: Indigo Prime). Hopefully its got Smith's blessing at least. At the very least I'm curious what the new writer's got in store for us.

It does kinda make me hope Rebellion might try bringing Luke Kirby back somehow. Maybe with Emma Beeby writing?

I wouldn't say no to that. Despite Luke's diminishing returns, Summer Magic was an outstanding piece of work; writer and artist working together perfectly to create a truly unique and original 2000ad story. Respect to the Tharg of the time too, for publishing something very different from the usual blend of future weapons and sci fi tough guys.

I suspect it would be difficult to disentangle it from the Harry Potter phenomenon if it were to come out now.
: Re: Forthcoming Thrills 2017
: The Adventurer 06 July, 2017, 05:20:36 PM
But it's so 'not Harry Potter', with its strict rules and headmasters. It's almost the anti-Potter, being all hedgemagic and shamanistic.

I think I'm just annoyed that it was building up to some big... thing... with Kim it never got to. Like we never got to the 'Empire Strikes Back' moment when everything goes wrong and the training wheels come off.
: Re: Forthcoming Thrills 2017
: Richard 06 July, 2017, 05:30:46 PM
I take your point about it not really being like Harry Potter. But it's still superficially close enough to Harry Potter that a new story would never be able to shake off the comparison. Just as they could never make a film out if Firekind because everyone would say it was an Avatar rip-off, even though that wouldn't be true.

Never quite got the idea that Journal of Luke Kirby had diminishing returns issues. I mean sure the first one was just sublime and note really topped BUT I'm pretty sure last time I read that last one with the Devil and Steve Parkhouse and what not I really enjoyed it. I felt it was alway at least good, at times, including the last story, very good. Its just that first story is so good folks lose perspective?
: Re: Forthcoming Thrills 2017
: The Adventurer 06 July, 2017, 08:55:59 PM
I didn't see 'diminishing' I saw 'ramp-up/set-up', and then no pay off. That last story was there to give Luke all the tools he needed to deal with whatever crisis came next. But we clearly never got that story.

Summer Magic was an outstanding piece of work; writer and artist working together perfectly to create a truly unique and original 2000ad story.

As Alan McKenzie points out, John Ridgway isn't a creator. McKenzie did all the hard work - thinking up the character's name, age and height - while all Ridgway did was follow McKenzie's instructions.

Like a bricklayer following an architect's plan.

Of course, all McKenzie did was write the story. It was editor Richard Burton who told McKenzie 'yes, please write a story, Alan', and therefore clearly deserves sole creator credit. The rest was just typing.

I got the One Eyed Jack reprint but it only covers the run in Valiant and not the stories from the merger wth Battle. I know Titan own the rights but they are pretty slow when it comes to reprints. Don't really know what you're getting at. You're talking almost as though Absolom was an acknowledged bad strip or something...? Or are you just not a fan?
Oh, no, not dissing Absalom or anything like that. It's one of the strips (cf. the 'Not sure if it's me or the prog... (http://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=44597.0)' thread) that I tend to skim read each week and like for what it is but due to the gaps between series couldn't really tell you what happened previously, so my knowledge of the plot is kind of patchy, which only enforces the 'skim reading' habit.

Normally I wouldn't consider buying the Absalom trades, which would improve the ability to 'catch-up' when a new series starts, because I have the back progs (if I could be arsed to go back and read them), hence my comment. Contrast this with the trades for Jaegir, Lawless & Deadworld/Tainted which are definite buys for me because they're strips that 'grabbed' me when I read the Prog/Meg. That was the only point I was making (to myself as much as anyone).  :)

Smith's posting on social media doesn't suggest there's continuing animosity.

Nobody can be sure exactly what happened, but (from outside) the problem appeared to stem from the controversial subject matter of the three episodes of Indigo Prime Smith completed.

While everyone understands that Tharg is entitled to do whatever he likes with the properties published in 2000ad, hopefully he and the author can agree to shed light on however much of the background to this as both parties feel comfortable with, to forestall the inevitable speculation.

Yeah, a careful explanation of the situation now could save a lot of trouble later. As it stands, I have no interest in reading non-Smith Indigo Prime, so it's already struggling uphill before it starts. And that's not any reflection on the new writer, I'd have no interest if Alan Moore himself took the gig: a huge part of the appeal of IP right from the Foundation & Basalt strip  has always been trying to understand the way the organisation and its multiverse works, something that appeared to exist in some shifting kaleidoscopic fashion in John's mind: or at least that was the illusion created. That puzzle in someone else's mind doesn't interest me.

Pah! You call this speculation?

Given where Smith was going with episode three, there'll be conspiracy theories involving Cliff Richard and the Duke of Edinburgh turning up at the Command Module in a white Fiat Uno, armed with a satsuma and a syringe full of amphetamine.

Mills was canny enough to substitute Johnny Sahib for Jimmy Savile, and lived to script another day. Although Greysuit was cancelled anyway, so obviously Lords Britton and Jenner have been putting the frighteners on Tharg from beyond the grave.

Robinson's Meg Interrogation from June last year (372) makes for interesting reading:

"Richard Burton said to me 'I don't like you and you'll never work for 2000ad' ... Writing for 2000ad was my dream job ... Nemesis The Warlock was my favourite story ... Our Man In Hondo was fantastic ... Harry Twenty I remember as the greatest thing ever ... I loved the VCs, Rogue Trooper, Halo Jones ... Robinson would become known at DC for bringing superannuated characters back to life ... Tell them I'd love to do something for 2000ad ... It would feel weird doing it after all this time, but I never had the chance back then, so why the hell not?"

Well, it will be interesting to see what approach they take.

My memory is hazy on Rogue, but did writers ever go down the route of the biochips themselves being important to either side?

Seems like GI training, memories of milli-com etc might be something to be sought after, at least for the Norts.

It came up the other day, that and whether Rogue was a product with a limited lifespan, constantly being fixed up by Bagman to counter him running past his warranty.

That was the gist of Rennie's original run - one of the gene genies and the GI's CO trying to find Rogue before his lifespan wore out, given he'd not been designed to be out in the field on his own for so long.

I do like James Robinson.

I was going to say its cool to see an American comic writer featured in 2000 AD, but then I checked his wiki and realized Robinson has been a Brit all along! Who, much like Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman, and Simon Furman, managed to break into US comics without 2000 AD credits under their belts. Very cool!

I'm curious if this new Rogue Trooper will be its own self contained thing, or play into what's going on in Hunted. I suspect the former, since the latter is pretty clearly Rennie's thing.

Yes, I'm always surprised Ellis didn't write more for 2000AD, I always thought of him as another ex-2000AD writer, before realising he hardly ever actually wrote anything for the GG.

Not to backtrack and split semantics too much, I guess I mean the Prog didn't necessarily make them names in comics before heading to America. Ex, Morrison/Ennis/Millar/Milligan/Moore/Grant/others.

On the latest 2000ad Thrillcast, Bisley swears blind he's going to start it soon. Pat Mills laughs in the manner of a man who's heard that one before, describing Bisley as "very convincing":
