: Mario Odyssey
: JamesC 27 October, 2017, 01:40:22 PM
I've spent a couple of hours playing Mario Odyssey this morning. I can confirm that the reviews are correct and it's absolutely amazing. I've turned it off now but it's the type of game I could easily spend all day on. I think I'll have to limit myself to short sessions or I'll start getting addicted.
I think they've done just about everything right on this one. It feels like it's taken inspiration from the best bits of all the Mario games of the past. Bloody brilliant.

It's a lovely, lovely game.

How are people doing? I'm currently on 279 moons.

Such a great game.

Currently on about 350 Moons, but have been pacing myself and trying to get as many from each world before moving on (I figured out quickly enough that several Moons are 'locked' at an early stage of the game- there will be some backtracking to come).

I also spent an obscene amount of time trying to get the 2nd Beach Volleyball Moon, then rage quit for the first time in about a decade

Amiibo are useful for getting free tips, and the Peach (Wedding Outfit) Amiibo is dead handy- tap it for 6 x life segments at any time, indefinitely.

I haven't had much time to play since my first session - just 5 mins here and there. I'm not sure how many moons I have to get but I've just defeated the big centipede thing in New Donk City. Have a way to go yet!

Yeah, that beach volleyball bit sucks. Even getting to 15 is really hard. Didn't even attempt the second one.

Currently on 314. I pretty much went straight for completion asap, as I knew taking a glance around the levels that the sheer number of moons would mean a lot of backtracking either way. I like dipping in and out of each level, grabbing a few then moving on once I get bored. Favourite levels so far have got to be Metro Kingdom and Mushroom Kingdom.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is the best Mario game since 64....

Thing is, I know I'll have to get it some day.
Tried to get it again last night for an hour, and ended up hanging my head like Dredd at the end of Day of Chaos.

Definitely the best Mario game since 64, and it may surpass my nostalgia for that game yet.

It's great. I was initially a little worried that the game would be too easy, but it's amazing how the difficulty gradually ramps up over time - I'm approaching 350 moons now, and I've hit a few really quite difficult challenges. I can see that getting every single moon is going to be a real test of 25 years of Mario-playing experience.

What's really nice though is that the game doesn't needlessly punish you for failure - ie having to restart an entire level if you die. I also really like that the moons, as opposed to the stars in 64, are all fairly bite-sized, manageable challenges. The variety keeps it from getting tedious. What I really love is how much emphasis the game puts on exploration, something that has been almost totally lost on the last 15 years of Mario games. I feel like the conventional wisdom was that the joy of exploring a 3d virtual space became passe very quickly after 64 hit (and the linearity and lack of true exploration in modern games is a big contributing factor to my waning interest in videogames as a whole). Odyssey makes that concept feel novel and special all over again.

A masterpiece.

Spent more than a few hours on this now, and can thoroughly agree this is the best Mario to date.

The smaller, and more numerous, challenges work in the same way Zelda's shrines work - if you get stuck, move on, it's never game breaking.

Loving it!

No. No.
We're all staying on that beach until we've completed the second volleyball challenge. All of us.

Yep, this game gets hard.

I'm currently attempting some of the Dark Side of the Moon bits... Wowzers. Already it's approaching the difficulty of the very final stages of 3D Land, and there are still somehow another 500 moons to collect after this?!?!?!?!

The bunny boss rush was pretty nightmarish, but doable with a little patience and persistence. These platforming challenges where you don't have the cap tho... Sheesh.

Go shoppin- I bought about 100 Moons post end-game.

Approaching 700 Moons now- it is indeed getting hard, and I've played so much I'm seeing that little f*ucker doing backflips when I close my eyes at night.

I wasn't sure about the whole buying moons thing - ie is it a cheat? Are you buying moons you'd otherwise have to find?

Also, anyone know what the '2' icons on the map are?

Ah no, nothing like that- the purchasable Moons are there to pad out (what I assume to be) the gap between approx 800 achievable Moons and the final tally of 999.

When you see a '2' icon on the map it shows the location of two Power Moons (normally inside a warp pipe mini-level).

Ah! Cool, thanks.

505 now. Man, Darker Side is a barrel of laughs, isn't it?

Got very far in it using the Peach Amiibo as a life-giving cheat, but still haven't completed that one yet.

I'm only about 80 moons in but what an utterly charming game. I've not seen anything difficult yet but glad it gets real later on. I doubt I'll manage 999 moons, I usually take a break at some point from Mario games then when I get back into it everything is too hard as Im rusty :D Hopefully wont happen with the versatility of the Switch where I can get a couple of moons in before bed to keep my hand in. Can I let you into a secret? I love Mario games but only ever get to about 50% complete.

I hit the 850 Moon mark last night, but have hit several bumps in the road.
Some of the 'Master Cup' Koopa Races are seemingly impossible.
Its looking very like I'll fall short of 100% completion by about 10 Moons.

Hmm.

I'm currently at around the 650 mark.

I haven't 'cheated' by googling anything (or buying any hints from Toad) yet, but I'm just baffled as to how there can possibly be 15-20 moons left on some levels when I have seemingly picked them clean and explored every single nook and cranny.

There are also a few missing ones that I just cannot fathom, such as the single outstanding moon on the ruined kingdom level. I've searched high and low and just can't find any hint of where it might be.

Yeah, some of the races are incredibly tough. Generally I've found that success lies in finding a quicker alternate route. The bouncy race in the snow level is extremely frustrating - in fact there's a hell of a lot of hellishly difficult bits I'm putting off for now. Some bits of this game border on trolling in how they are calculated to punish you - especially the deliberate lack of checkpoints, which seems uncharacteristically mean-spirited for a Nintendo game. Darker Side in particular is an absolute nightmare in this respect - I just don't have the energy to even try again for the foreseeable future - ditto the jump rope and beach volleyball.

360 moons in and I can see there are ones I'm just not going to bother with at this point. I just cba with races (I avoid them in games like AC too) If I can get to Link Primes count I'll be happy I've had my moneys worth though. Still awesome.

I wouldn't consider the Toad / Amiibo hints cheating Rad- I used that a few times only to find the Moon location, but obtaining it generally remained a challenge.

Google is of course definitely cheating, and I'm afraid I'll have to go the Cheaty McCheaterson route from here on in- over 950 Moons now, and the remaining few are more frustrating than anything else.
Like the disappearing road on Dark Side- I mean c'mon...

I've actually got to the end of that fucker twice now (the key is using a combination of triple jump, long jump, roll and mid air dive to maximise speed) but just missed grabbing the first moon both times. It's heartbreaking.

Generally I'm relying on the free parrot hints for now. Seems like he'll dish out three at a time, though some are so vague as to be meaningless.

That 2nd skipping rope Moon is a joke- I had zero moral reservations using this glitch; https://kotaku.com/super-mario-odyssey-players-use-glitch-to-break-jump-ro-1820622068

Get it done before its patched!

I'm with James Stacey - about 320 moons in, and reaching the end of my Mario skills (or lack of).
Christ, but it's been a blast so far. Sheer gaming bliss
: Re: Mario Odyssey

Even with the Toad hints I'm still finding the last few moons on each level frustratingly vague, and it simply isn't fun any more going round and round the same levels fruitlessly searching, so I finally snapped and resorted to googling the solutions on a few odd occasions.

If I had to pick a fault with this (nigh on perfect) game, it would be that some of the challenges aren't what I would ever call 'fun', with a few being outright tedious slogs that just need to be endured. I'm thinking especially of the koopa races, the trace walks, the jump rope and the volley ball as well as several others.

the trace walks

Da Vinci would've had a meltdown trying to achieve the perfect circle for the 2nd Trace Walk in the Moon Kingdom.

Think I (eventually) got 96 on that one!

I've found the trick on those is to use the rocks as reference for your position, and shift the camera angle around as you walk to get a better sense of spatial awareness.

After that it's just a case of perseverance until you finally luck out.
