You'd have to imagine that the twin avalanches of the Mega- and Ultimate Collections, not to mention the Treasury series, have slowed down the schedule of compiling more conventional collections.

Not to mention the concern that buyers have finite resources, especially when you had the overlap of the Mega-Collection and Ultimate Collection.

Bigger Than Biggs (Judge Anderson: Rookie Book 4) (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bigger-Than-Biggs-Judge-Anderson-ebook/dp/B07H32HSZ9) - Abaddon Books, 3rd December 2018.

Mega-City One, 2100 AD. Psi-Judge Cassandra Anderson’s second year on the streets as a full-Eagle Judge.

There’s trouble brewing in the Eee-Zee Rest; biker gangs, kidnappings and riots are all pretty standard in Mega-City One, but the block is off-limits – the owner’s just too clean to investigate.

Seconded to another division, Anderson gets suspicious: something’s terrifying the residents, and it’s not your average perp or bouncer. When biker Vex returns a kidnap victim and asks Anderson for help, the Psi-Judge knows this is the opportunity she’s been looking for.

But the thing that lurks in the basement is something new. Something greedy. Something hungry.

Not only Complete, but they'll include the first Absalom story, too, which may help to somewhat smooth out the abrupt ending of Cabs (by seguing neatly into Absalom).

Oh no missed that. Well at least if that's right it will be a nice contained story with a beginning middle and end but damn it feels like it has so much to offer and explore and I could happily read a long with them as long as they wanted.

Also does the fact that Counterfeit Girl has a trade mean we're not getting any more of that as well. Shame as I felt that strip had other places to go and would loved to of had it back.

Yes, it’s pretty much a trilogy. Book 3 “High Society” debuts soon. But the world is so rich, we’ve found we have strong ideas for at least three more volumes after that. We’ll see how the audience reacts. It all builds into one, big ghastly picture, whichever characters are ultimately around to witness that. We’d love to continue exploring the Brink.

Judge Dredd: Toxic! (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Judge-Dredd-Toxic-Paul-Jenkins/dp/1684054753) - paperback, 4th June 2019, 96 pages, IDW

Dredd's investigation into the death of a seemingly unremarkable sewage worker spirals into a waste management crisis that could destroy all of Mega-City One!

Mega-City One has long used genetic modification on its waste workers to control the deluge of filth that flows under the city each day. When Dredd discovers that some of them have foregone that disfiguring procedure in favor of hosting protective alien symbiotes, it sparks a groundswell of anti-immigration fervor. Soon the toxic atmosphere spills into the streets, undermining the very infrastructure that makes the city tolerable. Can Dredd find a solution to save the now indispensable aliens from the angry mobs?

Never have the satire and social commentary of Judge Dredd cut so sharply, nor repudiated hate so emphatically, as in Toxic! And never has that statement--or the humor and entertainment with which it is delivered--been more necessary.

Collects the complete four-issue series.

Ha, brilliant! I'd always hoped we'd get a chance to reprint Invasion 1984, so I'm delighted to see Rebellion jumping on that one - it's a great tale with some lovely Eric Bradbury art, and it's going straight on my list :-)

Fantastic to see Death Wish turning up too, as that's a cracking strip even in its later Eagle run where it all gets a bit bonkers.

Only read the run in Eagle but will get it for sure. Always liked the character. Was the original Death Wish strip drawn by Vanyo brothers (whatever happened to them, they were great) as well ?

when is the next Slaine and defoe starting again?

is there a specific reason sinister dexter is not being collected completely ?

Why aren't we getting more judge dredd case field per year and why doesn't it atlas collect years worth ( around 450 pages)? are they not selling that well or is really time consuming to produce and two a year is what they are able to pump out?

Thanks

Stewart Moore's slaving over the next series of Defoe (https://www.millsverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/defoe1-Stewart.jpg) as we speak. Chris Weston draws a comedy Slaine short* in this year's end of year prog - I think Simon Davis said the most recent book of Brutania was his last work on the strip.

Conventional wisdom seems to be that Sinister Dexter (like Dante) doesn't sell well, but that's only me repeating what others have said here.

Tharg puts out books at a rate he reckons the market will support. He could carpet-bomb Amazon with six Case Files every year*, but then his small-though-discerning readership might struggle to afford the non-Dredd books and comics he publishes that year.

That lesser-known material might not sell as well, and then it would be stuck with a reputation as unpopular/unprofitable. Like Sinister Dexter.

* I think it's actually an Ukko story?

** Maybe he can't - it takes time and money to prepare old material for print. Plus, there's reader fatigue - if you'd spent £100 buying six books of Ennis, Millar, Morrison and Steelgrave Dredd stories in a single year, I can imagine you'd be overwhelmed by their general mediocrity and not very enthusiastic about forking out another £100 next year just to see if 1995-1998's crop of stories was any better

Death Wish has an amazing cover and the blurb sounds super awesome. But is it actually any good?
And by good, I mean is it full of the violent pain and death I've come to know and love from 2000AD / early Action, or is it watered down?

    : Tjm86 23 November, 2018, 07:11:07 PM
Well, it managed to get a resurgence in the 80's Eagle.  Compared to Action / Tooth, aye it is quite tame.  Worth reading though?  I would say so.  Not exactly full of the violent pain and death Tooth fans are used to but enjoyable nonetheless.

To be honest I think its a good thing. Its always had the sense of something that that a single finite story to tell and it will be nice to have it wrap up as a solid chunk of goodness. So many writers have so many plates spinning its nice to see some get wrapped up.

Much as I love Ian Edginton's work right now he could well benefit from doing this as well. Which from his recent thrillcast he might be aware needs to happen.

I loved the gruesomeness and despair of Death Wish when it ran in Tiger (which my brother got), but lost interest when Blake had his face perfectly reconstructed by a plastic surgeon... only to immediately have another accident disfigure him in the exact same way (anticipating Moe Syzlak's career as a soap star by some 20 years).

Rather than start a separate thread...

I was wondering if we're ever likely to see large format collections of Nemesis the Warlock. We've had the Mek-Files and Ro-Busters collections and various other large hardbacks, and I would have thought Nemesis an obvious next step. Yeah, I know I've already got the Titan reprints and the Rebellion phonebooks and the Best of 2000AD monthlies and... but I'd like some large format hardbacks.

Same goes for large format hardback editions of the Dredd epics. Cursed Earth was great, but let's have a few more. I know there's all the Hachette stuff, but I'd prefer something that approximates the original page size.

    Regards,

    Robin

On the latest ECBT2000ad podcast Pat Mills is interviewed and while he's coy about who the new Slaine artist is, he does say that it’s a South American artist that is well established in comics and was eager to do Slaine.

Leonardo Manco I'd say. Which would be terrific.

Kingdom, too.  Abnett's in demand elsewhere, I suppose:

'Dan Abnett: Yes, (Brink's) pretty much a trilogy. Book 3, “High Society” debuts soon. But the world is so rich, we’ve found we have strong ideas for at least three more volumes after that. We’ll see how the audience reacts. It all builds into one, big ghastly picture, whichever characters are ultimately around to witness that. We’d love to continue exploring the Brink.'

Yeah, that Judge Death story looks very tasty - nice slap in the face to the FCBD people too - I no longer need to bother getting up early on a Saturday to queue up for loads of glossy adverts and excerpts - 2000ad was one of the very few creators who really made an effort to produce something new and worthwhile.

Well it always helps starting at the top but worth remembering it takes a while to really get going (well if you ask me). First stories I don't really like. Next to longer form stories, with Simon Davis art - Gunshark Vacation and Murder 101 are pretty good but not quite there. There is then a series of shorts after that however which are just superb.

Thanks for that Colin I know that establishing a story and gets it going can take time. Most of the classic stories started with a lot of one part stories as well. If Rebellion publish this collection I will grab it (or in my case download it) even if it is just to watch Davis wonderful painted work.

Both Ladykiller and Small House is actually the end of long running story lines. Both these stories are excellent.

Ladykiller started in Prog 1991 ending in Prog 1998. It is about a serial killer PJ Maybe the original story was published in Prog 534. You can always get the trade "The Complete PJ Maybe" (it does not contain Ladykiller) https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/graphic-novels/more-dredd/GRN279 (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/graphic-novels/more-dredd/GRN279)

Small House you might have to invest in the trades Titan (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/graphic-novels/more-dredd/XB573) and Trifecta (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/graphic-novels/more-dredd/XB476). If you can hold on theirwill be a Small House trade coming soon and it might contaion the complete story line including the above mentioned.

Is there any news about if the Judge Pin from SJS storyline will pick up again this year?

The following is a quote out of prog 2100 where Rob Williams mentioned Judge Pin:

'This talk of Trifecta and Dredd’s secret little team prompts
us to wonder about the prospect of seeing a few familiar
characters in The Small House – perhaps Judges Pin and
Gerhart from the other ongoing slowburner series he’s been
developing with Chris Weston? ‘No Judge Pin in this one,’
he replies. ‘That’s very much my and Chris Weston’s story,
which is largely separate from this. Chris and I have plans
for Pin, we know the end of that story, we just need to get
    Dredd there.’

So I am sure that we will see her coming sometime 2019

For those who enjoyed Laura Bailey's take on DeMarco in the Summer Special last year, Tharg's given permission to share a sneak peek of the series we've created for the Judge Dredd Megazine which should be starting in July.

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first time that Thought Bubble competition winners (we both won in 2017) have been paired up for a series so it'll be interesting to see how this is received!

I've just bumped into Mr Dan Abnett, while walking back to the car in Eastbourne, and after a) being shocked he recognised me,  b) introducing him to my wife and c) fanboy gushing at him for a bit, I had it confirmed to my actual face that Grey Area isn't over, The Out isn't connected to it, and SiniDex continues. The third was for my own peace of mind because I live in fear of it ending, and the first two were because my slightly panicked mind knew you lot were concerned. I completely forgot to mention Kingdom or Lawless to him, but fear I may have ended up just crying, so I'm kind of glad.

I do fear if I met Dan Abnett I'd just hug him and weep with joy, thanking him endlessly through sobs and snot... until the police arrived.

The Floppie for Meg 411 is Defoe 'The Damned' now hasn't Defoe been collected? Have I missed something? I looked at the shop and Amazon and discovered the later Defoe doesn't seem to be collected and judging my this is considered fodder for the floppie. Given how much there is of it this really surprised me... well okay not interesting but it caught my eye.

Anyway what is interesting is The Returners is ... well returning - WAYHEY - loved that first time round.

Decent line-up in 2000ad too in July Indigo Prime will no doubt continue to divide opinion and we get more Sinister Dexter which always cheers my day and Steve Yeowell is still on art to boot.

Absolutely.  The Meg still seems to be holding its own when it comes to quality both of writing and artwork.  At the risk of exploding the Interweb it's great to see a broader gender balance on the writing front.  Two female writers in this edition.  Given the sometimes negative response to last year's Sci-Fi 'all female' special, this seems more like valid recognition than a gimmick.

The artist roster is also encouraging.  Lynch's artwork has really progressed over the last few years and I'm assuming that this is going to be a continuation of the intermittent storyline he and Wyatt have been working on over the last couple of years.  Be really interesting to see what Pleece makes of Brit-cit.  Been a long time since we've seen his work in tooth or the meg.  A very welcome return.  Goddard is always a pleasure and another outing from Paul Williams .... Looks promising.

The arts good but I've never liked the SJS uniform.  The helmet looks like it rides too high and the upsized badge is just too big.

I can't tell from the frame that she's a woman.  She still looks pin-thin to me, though having studied it further the arm and gloved hand reaching into frame on the third panel now makes me think of Mickey Mouse.

Hoping for a twist on Death Of A Legend, where Dredd kidnaps Hershey from the hospice but this time they embark on a wacky road trip, crossing all the items off her bucket list as they go.

Pat Mills's loss is Tom Eglinton's gain; only MacNeil sits on a higher shelf than Flint and Simon Davis in Tharg's cabinet of treasures. The pairing of a relatively new writer with a Rolls Royce artist reminds me of Tharg handing Mike Carroll the keys to Colin MacNeil for Grindstone Cowboys and warning him not to damage the paintwork.

Might as well post this again; might not get much more use out of it:

That panel is from the previous series, in prog 2055. Lee shared it on Twitter in leiu of being able to post any new artwork, but there is indeed a new series coming.

My bad, but damn it still looks cool.

    Troubling news about Wagner.  :o

Why? He hasn’t specified either a timescale or a number of stories he still intends to do. As has been obvious for a good number of years, John’s happy to leave the week-in-week-out grind to newer models of script droid and contribute the increasingly occasional story when the mood takes him.

And, one day, he’s going to retire. Or are you saying that Wagner should literally work until he dies so that you can read Dredd strips penned by him? That seems a mite… I dunno… selfish?

I didn't say anything of the sort. I only said I'd be sad when he finally packs it in.

You're often quite aggressive to other people on this board. I respectfully suggest you tone it down a tad.

I didn't say anything of the sort. I only said I'd be sad when he finally packs it in.

With respect, that's not what you said. I asked why you thought the news was troubling because those were the words you used. You can tell those were the words you used because you typed them and I quoted them in the post you replied to. If that's not what you meant then that's something completely different but I'm not psychic.

You're often quite aggressive to other people on this board. I respectfully suggest you tone it down a tad.

For a long time, I'll admit I wasn't in a very good place and ran on a very short fuse. I've mea culpa-ed for that more than once and have been making an effort to do better. I'm sorry if you thought my tone was aggressive, but I don't see it. I asked you a question, based on the words you used to express a position. If those words didn't express that position, all you had to do was explain what you did mean and clarify a misunderstanding.

However, I'd like you retract your claim that I'm "often quite aggressive to other people on this board." Whilst I have freely admitted that I was much more bad-tempered than was good for either me or the forum in the past, I'd invite you to take a trawl through, I dunno, the last three years of my posts (you can find them here (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?action=profile;u=524;area=showposts;start=0)) and come back with enough examples to show that I'm "often aggressive."

If you can't, or if you just can't be arsed (which is fair enough), then I'd like you to withdraw that accusation because, frankly, it's quite hurtful.

    Well, this...

    ...was a mite uncalled for.

A little, perhaps. I must be the first person on this forum to ever take someone's words to their logical if improbable conclusion in order to make a rhetorical point. I'm amazed it's never happened before.

I would also dispute "aggressive" here, but even if it is (and it certainly wasn't intended as such) one data point doesn't make a pattern, which is what I'm objecting to Richard claiming.

I love all of the above, although I'm not sure I'd recommend them as ripsnorting narratives. McCarthy's solo work is best enjoyed as decompressed variations on his Artoons (http://tearoomofdespair.blogspot.com/2017/04/brendan-mccarthys-artoons.html); a series of wonderful images, ideas and evocative phrases.

Tharg's wise to pair McCarthy with structure-monkeys. Kek-W seems like a natural fit for McCarthy's psychotropic aesthetic, but I can see why their differing outlooks on life might make a working relationship too interesting to prove productive.

“The last police academy in the country has just passed out its last officer. That’s you.”

All Errol Quon ever wanted was to be a cop. Friends, family—even the instructors at the academy—urged her to quit, but she stuck to it, becoming the last cop ever to graduate.

Quon’s assigned to Golgotha, Alabama, and partnered up with Judge Unity Kurzweil, hunting a lead on an old case. And there’s still a few things the last cop can teach one of the first Judges...?

Although if his star rises, perhaps that’ll boost Brass Sun sales and mean we’ll get a hardback follow-up to the lovely first volume that came out – *gulp* – FIVE years ago now. Mind you, we’d need another 10 episodes or so to fill it, unless it was a skinnier edition (like the upcoming Deadworld one is going to be – 96 pages compared to the first book’s 144. And, yes, I’m still going to buy it, obviously).

I love Defoe so hard. It's supplanted everything but Nemesis for me in terms of 'favourite Mills thrill'. Cracking worldbuilding, great characters, and even the dreaded politicking largely works, given the hero is a post-Civil War Leveller working for the Crown.

So, so glad that it's still a going concern after the changing-artist debacle looked like it might sink it completely.

Really looking forward to this special - this year's themed specials have been fantastic, and a Thirteenth Floor-themed one-off is right up my street. Lovely cover work from Kyie Hotz too...

(Teasing, but that's an iffy choice of typeface with the missing leg on the "L" - fiddly to read, as the instinct is to scan it as "VINCE IOCKE", "KEIIEY JONES", "HENRIK SAHISTROM" etc. Always a risk with OTT horror-themed type where the exaggerated/distressed/etc. forms can be pushed to extremes), but this is particularly awkward.)

“The one in which Gillian Anderson c. 2002 plays Judge Anderson, dressed in a futuristic leather catsuit that doesn’t conform to known physics, and so directly maps out the shape of her boobs.”

If nothing else, I do wish comic book artists would get a better grounding not only in basic anatomy (you can break what the human body is capable of, but only once you know how to accurately portray it), but also how materials work.

Anyway, more Brink is very welcome, and I’m looking forward to the Wagner Dredd.

Joseph Linsner is renowned as the comic book Da Vinci of the buxom wench, so I'm sure Tharg wasn't too surprised when he got the print file.
That cover isn't the best example of his work I'll admit, but it's pretty eye catching. Good choice for a jump-on issue.

Looking forward to the return of Brink too. The Culbard Droid must be sucking down the Energon Cubes - he's a new series out with Dark Horse at the moment too ('Everything').

All of the new Thrills look great in fact, and new Dredd by the premier league is always welcome, but I find that's it's Hope: Under Fire I'm most looking forward too. Really enjoyed that first series.

Jovis. I've just Googled 'Joseph Linsner' - I wouldn't recommend doing so at work.

I can see the guy has... talent, of a very specific kind, but based on his abilities he seems a poor choice and has produced a poor cover, especially for a jumping-on prog.

However - he does have some form of 'name' draw for the US readers, similarly to Mike Allred & George Perez, both of whom have delivered covers for TMO in recent years.

Perhaps it’ll work in that regard, then. Having scrolled through a few pages of his art in Google Images, it just made me a bit sad. May as well just write TITS in massive letters on his covers.

Beat me to it (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=covers&page=artist&choice=RICHL&Comic=usreprints). Cheesecake doesn't bother me, but that's a wonky image.

Dredd's a difficult character to draw, even for people who have been trying since they were kids. Geniuses like MacNeil (https://i.imgur.com/ronj9qT.png), Weston (https://i.imgur.com/BcpCdq8.jpg) and Walker (https://i.imgur.com/xqYsKQl.jpg) turned in wobbly Dredds at the first attempt, so asking a rookie* to do a cover is a bit mean.

All the attention is on Anderson: Size 44DDivision, but Dredd's got a thigh where his right bicep should be and I'm not sure what his left hand's doing or why it's growing out of his abdomen. The whole aesthetic isn't really my thing, but the top team on Dredd, SK Moore's debut on Defoe, Culbard and Broxton balance that out.

Hogan doing Zaucer is interesting. A pity Ewing’s not doing another series (and isn’t back in the Prog), but Hogan writing again for 2000 AD is fantastic news. And, yes, Resident Alien is superb. Here’s hoping Hogan might pitch a new series as well. I get that people weren’t thrilled by his slower-paced strips, but RA has fantastic storytelling, and Brink has showcased how the Prog can house variety. (I keep hoping – in vain, obviously – that a future product will be a Brink omnibus-style HC. I’d buy that in a shot.)

Delighted to have Hogan back in the Prog - I really enjoyed his Vertigo / Sandman stuff and the majority of his previous work for Tharg (including Strontium Dogs / Durham Red).
A collaboration with McCarthy on Zaucer should be a fine weekly read.

Random thought - if TMO is intent on bringing classic "It shoulda ended with..." character Durham Red back into the fold then there are worse ideas than giving Hogan another crack at it.

I hope it's okay to mention the 'competition' here!

    Starblazer volume 1 (https://www.dcthomsonshop.co.uk/starblazer) - November 2019, 132 pages, DC Thomson.

"Out of this world Space Fiction Adventure in Pictures. An interstellar title not seen in almost three decades, Starblazer returns in Heritage Comics’ latest graphic novel. Collating two classic issues from DC Thomson’s archives and blowing them up to full graphic novel size with a brand new wraparound cover, this is something no Sci-Fi fan or British comic collector can do without!"

Includes "Operation Overkill" by Grant Morrison, plus "Jaws of Death".

I can't recall those stories but judging by the cover, at least one features occasional character Mikel Kayn (or however it was spelt).

Don't think I've ever heard of this before.

It was the SF equivalent of "Commando" - one standalone story every issue in the same size digest.  They ended up with a few occasional characters who would appear in a new story every so often, but not many.  Later on the run they broadened it to fantasy stories as well.
