: Help me Hive Mind, you're my only hope...
: Bolt-01 22 August, 2018, 09:37:02 AM
... and here I am asking for help because I'm at work and an artist on a strip has asked about ref.

Can anyone conform for me that TEK judges have two std pads (no eagle) and that the badge says 'TEK'?

Please and Thankyou.

There's no standard uniform for any of the departments, other than street judges. Even the SJS are always fannying around with skulls and asymmetrical eagles. Here's Tek Judge Brufen getting his in Oz:

On the other hand, when introduced, Brufen has a hexagonal badge that says Tek in a black circle, worn centrally. Both shoulder pads are non-eagle.

Arguably there are two Brufens. Since he looked entirely different and died twice. And more pertinently, he's a Dept head rather than a rank-and-file Tek, so not the best guide.  But then Stitch, of Mechanismo fame, rocked something similar.

I'd go with the full Carlos meself - rounded pads and soft helmet with goggles, as seen in The Starborn Thing.  Dillon's Tek Judge Cassidy in Cry of teh Werewolf just had a green smock with his name on it. McCarthy's teks on Atlantis (and in Oz) had mad helmets with any number of lenses, aerials and servo arms

Or to put it another way, as long as its distinct from street uniforms, you just can't go wrong.

Died twice?  Don't remember that!

I'm surprised that Cassidy wasn't a med-judge rather than tek-judge - guess there's some overlap in some areas...

I exaggerate - he died during Oz,  but was still alive and on the Council when Dredd resigns in Tale of the Dead Man. I'm only assuming he died in the Big Nec cos he doesn't appear again...  It is also quite hard to reconcile the older spindly Robinson Brufen with the bulky McCarthy version,  who looks more like one of his successors,  McTighe.

I wouldn't use Brufen as a reference because (1) he was a head of division and (2) heads of divisions haven't worn breastplates since Necropolis (1990).

Every artist has his own interpretation. As long as you can tell it's not a street judge it doesn't really matter.

Hey there, Squaxx!

Got a question for the wise hive.

Sugar is illegal in the big Meg, so what 'is' used? I'd hate to have to use 'Aspartame' when there must be a much more MC-1 term out there. But I can't remember it for the life of me.

Help?

Good question (and one I don't have an answer to).  If you don't get an answer, I'd invent something - probably playing on the words 'synthi', 'sweet' and/or 'sugar'.  Or 'psuedo' - would 'psuegar' be too difficult to decipher without explanation?

I suggest Syntharin (synthetic saccharin).

It's the 1993 Megazine Readers' Survey (they were giving away pages of original artwork by the likes of Ian Gibson, Frank Quitely and Peter Doherty, so that one's actually quite difficult to find intact.)

another plea for information from the hive mind!

Several years ago Marvel put out a ridiculously huge book spanning the history of Marvel (possibly for the 75th anniversay?). It was the size of a coffee table, very expensive and contained lots of inserts, pop ups, and loose-leaf additions such as FOOM membership cards etc

I cant remember what it was called or find any information using different Google searches - can anyone help me/

I love that story. The humour's so cruel and the characters so selfish, venal and unloveable. This was my introduction to the much-discussed concept that MC1 stories could work without Dredd.

I had it in my head that all of the chapter titles in Zenith were songs and I thought it would be cool to make a playlist of them.

But looking through my collected Phase I hardback, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Or was it the "Next Prog:..." which aren't printed in this version?

As some of you know, I live in a shed for reasons too convoluted to go into here. Anyway, during this recent spate of torrential rain, it's sprung a leak and damaged my Judge Dredd Mega Collection, which is a huge testicular twinge but not really a disaster.

What is worrying me now is the future of the Strontium Dog page that Carlos gave me as a thank you for pulling together the Supersquirrel Undefeated Get Well Comic which is, thank Grud, undamaged. My shed is no place for this priceless piece of original artwork. I feel I should donate it to a museum or something, somewhere it can be looked after properly. (I don't want to sell it because it was a gift and to do so feels all kinds of wrong.)

Anybody got any suggestions (apart from "I'll have it," that
is!)?

Help! I'm being assailed by midges ( or something that's got wings and is equally annoying ). They've just started to swarm about the flat in the last day or two. I thought that maybe it was down to something rotting in the flat - I've been struck down with a flu / chest infection for the last four weeks, so my normally, relatively okay standards of hygeine have admittedly slipped a little. So I've given the gaff a good clean-up but so far it's made no no difference. The little bastards are flying around and annoying me even as I'm typing this.

I'm beginning to feel like that kid in the Charlie Brown cartoon with a permanent swarm of flies around him.

Thankfully I'm escaping now for a few hours to a friends flat, so I'll have some respite at least.

Any useful suggestions most appreciated.

Cheers! -

Having lived in a few typical British rental properties in the past I certainly know the fear that damp, flooding or mould will get to some items I have.  If I was you I'd keep it in as safe a place as I could but also put in place a will so that the page goes to a comic museum (the only one I know of is the Cartoon Museum (https://www.cartoonmuseum.org/)).  Was there talk about a museum to Carlos in his hometown, or was I imagining that?

Fortunately, the page has gone to a person of impeccable character for safe keeping - and we've both written some very gloomy "if anything happens to me..." letters. Nothing else I own is really irreplaceable so I'm content for now.

I think I had the same dream about a Carlos museum - I hope it comes to pass.

Dredd's uniform is black (they just sometimes use blue as artistic licence, like with Superman's hair). The follow-up questions are just because this is one of the perennial questions that always comes up from time to time. There's a whole thread somewhere about Dredd's uniform, but if you can't be arsed to search for it, the evidence is: (1) Ezquerra always did it entirely in black and never used blue, and (2) John Wagner wrote a line of dialogue in The Judge Child where Dredd is about to kill a suicidal psychopath, and the psycho says something like "Death in black! Excellent! Black is my favourite colour!"

Yes, plenty of options like that (though that one looks like from the rebooted films) but I was wondering if any of the cosplayers on board had recommendations. I bought a TNG uniform off Amazon about 5 years ago which looked good but needed massive alterations to it so it didn't look like an unfolded sack of washing.

The 1987 Sci-Fi Special has a Strontium Dog story in it - it's a 15-pager with art by Ezquerra. It doesn't have a title but it features a megalomaniacal computer named McIntyre.

It's got to be a reprint because the Ezquerra art is definitely pre-'87, and the credit card says "blueprinters" and doesn't look like 2000 AD.

It's not from the weekly Starlord, because it's 15 pages straight (not episodic), which means it must come from either the Starlord Summer Special or one of the three Starlord annuals. Does anyone know which it was originally published in?

It is from the weekly Starlord.  I covered it in my prog slog blog (https://sheridanwilde.wordpress.com/2019/07/18/star-lord-no-8-nazi-world-2478-a-d-time-control-85-million-b-c-torn-between-impossible-worlds/) last year.

They must have taken out the logo from episodes two and three when they reprinted it in the Sci-Fi special. Barney lists it for the special as McIntyre and for the Starlord issues as Planet of the Dead.

There's a Strontium Dog tale in the 1980 Sci-Fi Special (#3), which is mostly text story but has some comic panels interspersed. It's six pages long and has no sub-title. I named it (or someone else did but I forgot my source) "Kurtiz on Krillion-6", and it's clearly inspired by Apocalypse Now.

Can anyone identify the writer or artist? I think it's early Ezquerra, because the final panel has that bumpy edge thing he did, around Alpha's helmet cam.

(Barney has nothing on it, and neither does Touched By The Hand of Tharg (http://www.2000ad.org/thrillpower/).)

1980 Sci-Fi Special (#3) has a story "The Steel Claw", with no subtitle and no credit card. Perhaps a reprint?

It's 8pp, and has a weird alien machine that looks like a giant hairy eyeball on four spindly metal legs landing in Orkney and taking out some hapless crofters. Nuking it does no good - so, in many respects this is heavily inspired by the US movie version of War of the Worlds (1953).

Anyone know who the creators are on this one?

Not only have they taken out the logo, but they have bowdlerised the art somehow in taking out the original colour from the colour spread - at the time I assumed someone had traced the art, but thinking about it now, possibly they just used the black separation sheet thingammee - where's Jim Campbell when you need him!

Here's another puzzler - the FCBD 2016 has a Strontium Dog tale in full colour with art by Ezquerra. It's six pages long, clearly a reprint and (being full colour) must be from an annual. It features a mutant who collects other mutants on a big moth-shaped spaceship.

Is it from the Starlord Annual 1982?

Hi guys, my question is this: does anybody have any info about which issues the page count of 2000 AD changed?

The reason I ask is I came across, in my stash of old 2000 ADs, prog 889, a relaunch issue with a new logo, and it felt surprisingly weighty (for a prog) in my hands. So I counted the pages and lo and behold, it’s a whopping 44 pages, and I believe this page count was kept up for a few months. When I started my rum and uncanny 2000 AD journey back in the halcyon days of ‘83 the count was, and is now, 32 pages. I think around prog 650 ish it went up to 36 pages and stayed at that count for a number of years. I know I could spend some time with Barney to work this all out, but does anyone already have a list of page count changes? If not I’ll do it myself and report back on this very self-same posting, should anyone express an interest. Ta

32pp: 1-588 [36pp: 500]
36pp: 589-949 [44pp: 889; 52pp: 920]
44pp: 950-973 [Double Whammy - Double Dredd!]
36pp: 974-1076 [44pp: 1023]
32pp: 1077-present day

In that last section, there are re-sized special progs (apart from the obvious seasonal 100pp ones):
48pp: 1084, 1111, 1124, 1150
36pp: 1350, 1351, 1362, 1384, 1387, 1400, 1450, 1500, 1526, 1550, 1650, 1700, 1750
52pp: 1771
36pp: 1800, 1850, 1874, 1900

My count only goes up to prog 1923 at the moment.

Oh you absolute star, Mr Solo - that’s exactly what I was after!

So, if I understand you correctly, it went back to 36 pages for prog 890, and the 44 page count was just a one-off?

: Funt Solo 11 May, 2020, 06:04:05 PM
Yeah, that's it exactly.

Prog 889 was a jump-on with HMV vouchers, a reservation insert, a new logo and was the biggest prog published at that time. 888 and 890 were both the (of the time) normal 36pp.

Beautiful work - I loves me a good nerdgraph.

The thing that struck me most was the surprisingly low page count in the early glory days - so much thrillpower in so few pages.

It's interesting that whilst most forms of entertainment have become more compressed and speedy over recent decades (watching old Dr Who can seem painfully slow now), comics have gone the other way and become more bloated and extended. The British comic tradition, exemplified by Mills and Wagner in those early days, was a masterclass of compressed storytelling and delivering stories that could be enjoyed as standalone episodes without needing endless backstory; whilst nowadays (particularly in mainstream American comics) splash panels, extended page count and more indulgent (is that the right word?) storytelling, all fuelled by the trade market, mean that skill has been lost to some extent.

So, The Valiant. After being a bit over/underwhelmed by the first issue,  I really enjoyed the wrap-up in the current Meg, and I'm going to pick up the Legacy issue shortly. I'm leaning toward the Dr Mesmer and Von Hoffman collections too - those two lads are hilarious.

However,  I have the nagging feeling that there's been more of these versions of some of the other characters somewhere, but Barney isn't helping. Was there a Death-Man strip, or a 'modern' Dr Sin? Tharg's Terror Tales: The Death of Death-Man, FCBD 2016 - this has the writer as "Barry Island", which I presume is a pseudonym of Al Ewing. Art by Henry Flint.

Doctor Sin, 2000 AD Annual 1979. Barney says maybe it was written by Pat Mills, art by Horacio Lalia.
Doctor Sin: The Strange Case Of The Wyndham Demon, 2000 AD Action Special 1992. John Smith & John Burns.
Doctor Sin: Don't Call It A Comeback, FCBD 2015. Rob Williams & Luca Pizzari.

There’s also Death Man:The Gathering in the 2017 Scream/Misty special. That’s credited to Henry Flint and “The Feek” which I thought at the time was that guy Martin Feekins but from what I hear now it looks like it’s a direct prologue to The Vigilant.

Definteily written and for my money, Dr Sin is 100% Judge DreAd, (or would be if Pat Mills himself had confirmed it rather than sitting on the fence!)

Witness!

Judge Dread is a story confirmed to be drawn by Lalia.  The first 4 pages of the Dr Sin strip are by Lalia, then another artist comes in to finish off the story abruptly and to art bodge certain features on the earlier pages, talking of which:

The original Judge Dread tale opened with a chap being shown his brother's body in a mortuary, only to question "Where is my brother's head??" Dr Sin opens similarly, but it is the brothers hand that is missing - note though, that the art is bodged and the later artist has drawn the head on the corpse - there is no sign of a missing hand as they are still covered by the shroud and the guy is looking at where teh head is/should be.

The original JD story sees the guy meet up with Judge Dread, and they go off and disrupt a satanic ritual at Stonehenge/a Stone Circle.  This plays out exactly other than it not being Stonehenge - it's this point that Pat got hung up on when he was asked about the strip, as he is adamant that he scripted it to be Stonehenge (though whether that translated to a foreign artist?  Maybe didnnt get the reference or did not ahve the reference so fudged it?  Maybe art bodged to make it somewhere more generic)

The original JD story then has them visit a local lord and cliffhangers the end of part 1 when Judge Dread recognises the lord as a man who he had seen hang years previously.  Here same story plays out, but rather than JD saying he recognises the guy as a dead man, he gets all shook up about seeing him, but then in the final panel says something bland like "I sense he is a bit of a rum one" - this makes no sense of the dramatic way it is drawn as it if it a massive cliffhangery revelation.

The rest of the story is then by a different artist, calls the characters by different names and gerally just wraps it all up very abruptly.

If this ISNT Judge Dread, then I await a better explanation for Lalia drawing just 4 pages of a story that follows the story beats of the original Judge Dread to the letter, and why the other artist had to draw a head on that corpse!

"That's not Stonehenge" doesnt really cut it for me as enough weight against the rest of the evidence

Was Doctor Sin the character originally called Judge Dredd, before Mills leant that name to some other character?

I mean the penultimate panel of page 4 has the guy say to JD "You look like you've seen a ghost" to which JD replies "perhaps I have, perhaps I have..."

a complete set up line for him then to say "For I saw that  man hang not 10 years ago!"  instead of "that man looks evil, dont trust him"

He is Mr Morden on page 4...

https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?Piece=1147930

On page 5, he then says the guy IS undead, so go figure! (He is also immediiately changed his name to Arnot La Gross!)

https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?Piece=1147928
Page 5 itself appears to have some major bodging going on to - the giant pic of Dr Sin vs the shrunken image of the guy meeting the Lord and some weird lines and a missing speech bubble inexpertly removed that suggest there may have been a logo and such excised?

More evidence  - this from the Judge Dredd Mega History book:

The basic plot concerned an eerie guy - Britains last hanginng Judge - who, along witha young companion, comes across illegal black magic practices being carried out at a place like Stonehenge. The Judge recognises the man at the centre or the ritual as someone he had previously sentenced to death.

"As for the original hanging judge sttory, the only trace is a brief entry in the 2000AD Make-Up book Prog 1-44 which relates to a four page Mills script (for which he was paid £30) calle "Black Magic: Judge Dread Original Installment One", and was drawn by Argentine artist Horacio Lalia. A Pencilled entry reads Unsuitable  - maybe except in Annual.

From Thrill Power Overload

(again Pat quoted)

It featured a vampiric hanging judge called Dread who leads occult investigations. The first story had something nasty going on a t Stonehenge.  Judge Dread recognises the leader of teh Satanists. "The last time I saw him was at teh Old Bailey, when I sentenced him to hang by his neck until dead".
: Re: Help me Hive Mind, you're my only hope...
: Leigh S 01 July, 2020, 07:58:36 PM
Gah - lost half of that quote

continuing:

That was the cliffhanger of the first episode.  I suspect Lalia screwed up the art

As in screwed up by not drawing Stonehenge?
