Film & TV / New Dr Who Trailer
« on: 20 September, 2018, 09:12:29 pm »
Maybe it's the fact that I've just finished binge watching Capaldi's last season and been pleasantly surprised but I find myself incredibly ambivalent about the trailer BBC have just released.  I know it's just a teaser and it's hard to take it too seriously with Whittaker constantly waving the sonic screwdriver at the camera but there's something 'off' about it for me that I can't quite put my finger on ....

The worst thing about this is that with all of the fan boy rage over the casting, it's going to be hard to be appropriately critical about the finished product.  Even in the short segments we see in the trailer Whittaker's Dr appears nowhere near as commanding as Capaldi's.  Is that a conscious decision to go with a differently gendered approach to 'crisis management' that ignores standard cliches about women in authority?  Is it a mistake on the part of writers who have fallen into cultural stereotypes?

I know that early days with a new regeneration are always 'peculiar'.  Colin Baker's first few episodes had him as a complete twonk.  Capaldi was a dithering idiot to start with.  Could it be the 'regeneration reset'?

I do hope that I'm over reading / interpreting what they've released.  Certainly will give it a shot and see what it is like.  Let's face it, whoever the actor in the hot seat there have always been quality episodes and ropey ones.  Even Tom Baker had his share of clunkers.

Hey All,

I'm wanting to post in the prog forum and edit my profile.  Do I need to get further permissions for that?

I may be wrong but I think the correct protocol is to commit to sacrificing your first born child, donating 90% of your worldly goods and pledging to being Molcher's indentured servant for the next millennium.

Although I hear that if you offer him a nice pack of choccy biccies he may give you a pass on the first born child and settle for the third offspring instead.

I think that he mentioned at Lawgiver that his hands weren't in great shape at present.  His signings were more his initials than full signature.  Of course this is a somewhat hazy recollection of a rather awestruck conversation so could be completely wrong.

The Future Shock has to be the best one we've seen in a long time.  A truly disturbing and twisty take on a couple of standard Sci Fi tropes.  I know it's hard to write a good FS and a lot of the time it's less about shocking and more about delivering a gruesome pun but this one definitely deserves a couple of reads.

As for next week's line up.  If the postie has trouble delivering it then I think I might end up seriously throwing teddies out of the pram!   :o

Aye, congrats.  Not a small achievement at all.

Don't beat yourself up about how things are affecting you.  I think it's fair to say that we all know how easy it is to be tripped by the most innocuous event, sometimes without us even realising it has happened.  It's easy to feel guilty for feeling down when actually there are perfectly valid reasons for it.

The last couple of weeks have been a bit of a roller coaster for me too.  Finally back in work after six months, it's been quite an emotional experience.  It's hard to let go of the experiences of the last two years and simply see this as a fresh start.  Keeping things in perspective and remembering that whatever the validity of the criticisms I faced, the methods employed were unjustified at best ... Still, it does shape my perception at present.  Then I remember that this is a different situation and feel guilty / annoyed at myself.  Then I remember: "Small moves."

To all who are still moving forward with this baggage, stay strong guys.  To all who have provided supportive voices, thanks.

Reading medical supply companies and health professionals working through their Brexit projections and preparations on Twitter is a lot like the end of the first third of a Stephen Baxter novel: ...

I'm not sure that using a Baxter Novel as an analogy for Brexit is the best choice.  Especially when you consider how many of them end up with the death of every character.

Luxury! Mine came with a dictated transcript inside a rolled up newspaper...

Wot no Betamax?

And will they remember to name the thread properly?

Good point.  I think I might have buggered that in the past with a colon instead of a dash.   :-[

Go digital it is always on time

There is something very satisfying though about having a solid, physical object in one's hand though.   ::)

Bank holiday last week.  Normally doesn't turn up 'til tuesday or even wednesday when that happens.

Don't worry, Thrill Suckers don't set in until after the fourth day.
