Links / Torrent files into MP3
« on: 14 September, 2016, 11:50:17 pm »
OK folk, who here knows how to convert torrent audio files into MP3 format (via Audacity preferably, can't find anything online of help more fool me) so you can actually listen to the damn things in VLC? I've tried everything from resetting the bit-float to switching from split to mono, can't seem to find a way to do it. Do I somehow have to extract individual files from the Torrent file first?...Hhhmmm...

Film & TV / THE GUYVER to get BD release, cover by Nick Percival
« on: 09 September, 2016, 04:31:30 pm »
Well here's an unexpected surprise, now the first Guyver movie (adapting the 80's guro manga classic) is utter cack but I still love it the same way I love the TMNT movies. It's silly. The sequel, however, which one would hope came as a rights bundle, is a perfect live action take on the manga, so fingers crossed THAT gets picked up.

Oh, and did I mention our man Nick Percival did a damn fine cover for the release?

Over the last few months i've been practicing coloring in both Manga Studio 4 on my PC and Procreate on my Ipad Air. Though i'm fairly confident with where my progress with the Bamboo and MS4 is going, i'm not getting my head around using my fingers for Procreate and would like to invest in a stylus for the Ipad Air, can anyone recommend a (relatively inexpensive but i'm not privy to the price of quality) stylus that NOT the apple pencil! I know it's supposed to be good but lordy i'm not spending THAT much!

« on: 17 August, 2016, 07:08:39 pm »
OKOKOKOK I know i'm getting it in early this year but, this is too big to just give it one new thread...so...

Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottleys INVINCIBLE will be ending with issue 150 in 2017.

Is it too soon to raise a glass or should I enjoy the ride first?

Oh, and too bulk the thread out a bit:
- Bacchus Omnibus 2 by Eddie Campbell
- Kane by Paul Grist
- Jojos Bizarre Adventure Part 9 by Hirohiko Araki
- MORE Corto Maltese and Valentina by Hugo Pratt and Guido Crepax

Books & Comics / What does it mean to be a Superhero?
« on: 30 July, 2016, 03:12:28 pm »
Over the last 18 months i've seen a steady but very noticeable change in my comic reading taste, namely the addition of 'cape comics', which i'd so derided for years before. Maybe it was a cultural distance but I could never get into the Marvel or DC mainstays, and that partially still hold true, however i've found myself accumulating a steady stream of favorable indi and mainstream superhero books...well, 'cape comics' anyway.

And by this I mean, with the restraints of corporate attitudes to 'good and bad' lifted, creator owned cape comics have been able to elevate somewhat beyond what the 'superhero' genre is often perceived as and has brought into the question what defines a superhero comic. Brightly colored and/or intricate costumes? A force for good? A rogues gallery? With each new book I read by an indi writer the more these old hat definitions loose their meaning. Look at Nexus, for example, and Colin made a great point by PM, because despite owning higher powers, it is in fact Horatio who is the 'hero' in this book, whilst the Nexus mantel has been held by several individuals of varying morality (bear in mind I have not read Next Nexus yet), meaning that Nexus can not by all accounts be considered a superhero comic. Contrast that to Zenith, that by all accounts IS a superhero comic, with a superhero protagonist...but is it/he? Zenith is merely a pop brat lucky enough to be born into stardom, lived long enough to let his powers garner him further fame and then squander them on a petty and short lived idol career. He's no 'hero' despite his super powers.

Flipping back into one of the more groundbreaking mainstream titles, Suicide Squad, often labeled as a 'superhero comic' posses among it's ranks very few truly outstanding bastions of justice (Bronze Tiger and Nightshade get a free pass) and instead is populated by super powered amoral monsters, yet combined they've saved the world more times than Batman. So, heroes after all? This can be further extended to Grendel (specifically Hunter Rose), who fights against a drab, oppressive society by living within his own rules, a figure head for rebellion not dissimilar to V, despite being something of a ruthless killer and veritable anti-hero in his own way he's a pioneer to the world he lives in, and their can be no better description to this kind of person than that of a 'hero'...Grendels kind of an interesting case now that I think about it.

Then their are further, increasingly bizarre additions to the genre. Flaming Carrot, for all his insanity and seeming ability to defy definition is most certainly a superhero in both character and comic. The Maxx initially appears to be sold as a superhero book but quickly morphs into something completely different. Then there's poor Concrete, trapped in a world unkind to his skill set, what is he...a superhero or something else all together?

I guess what I was trying to say with all this rambling is, what is a 'superhero', and what defines who is and isn't a member of that Superman led group of icons in a genre encompassing an increasingly varied list of titles and attitudes to the genre.

General / Hanging plot threads you would like to see addressed
« on: 24 June, 2016, 04:47:15 pm »
When you've got a weekly comic thats been runing for 40 years, and a sister magazine thats been runing for 20 odd, there are bound to be a few dangling plot threads you'd like to see concluded.

In terms of Dredd alone there are a shit ton, Rico and Koburns curse by Gilla Bruja, where Michal Carroll was going with the space corps story line, former chief judge Silver's ghost, so on and so forth.

Heart breaking news but let's keep our thingers crissed and hope he pull's through, my thoughts right now are with him and his family.

Comixology have a sale of Cooke's work right now, i'd advise we make the most of it and support hom whilst we still can.

Books & Comics / Michel Fiffe's COPRA
« on: 24 February, 2016, 04:44:46 pm »
Well now, are you all ready for a glowing endorsement? You better bloody be, because it's fan-frickin'-tastic stuff, and that stuff would be none other than Michel Fiffe's glorious tribute to 80's Suicide squad and Doom Patrol comics, COPRA.

Fiffe is very his own artist, theirs nothing quite like his style on the market. However he's not afraid to wear his influences on his sleave and the general worldy aesthetic to COPRA is an odd amalgamation of the two previously mentioned DC titles and Masamune Shirow cyber-punk. It's a brilliantly unique look, the two worlds acting as contrast and magnetically attractive at the same time, to form a beautiful collage of vibrante art and grimey textures. It's quite unlike anything else i've ver seen in comics.

I've only devoured the first TPB thus far, collecting #1-6 but will get on to the next two as soon as I possibly can as it's that rarest of things I look for in comics, FUN!

Games / The 2D Fighters thread
« on: 31 January, 2016, 12:28:24 pm »
Figured it was about time someone opened a thread for the vast back catalogue of 2D based fighters out on the market.

I'm currently punching up about 2 hours of gameplay on Ultra Street Fighter IV in the build up to Street Fighter V in a few months which i'm not 100% certain could possibly live up to the smooth gameplay mechanics of IV, despite much improved graphics. It already appears to have a stunning and essential roster of characters, mind you, though i'm still uncertain who'se daft idea it was ot make Guille and Juri Han DLC only! And where the hell is Dudley?!

There is also a new King of Fighters game on the horrizon, however I have never played a KoF game in my life despite knowing i'll very much enjoy them. I see theirs a tri-bundle pack on steam for a very reasonable price, so is that the best entry point for a new player? Is the gameplay more akin to Tekken than Street Fighter (i.e. hand to hand combo based rather than projectiles)?

Books & Comics / The Digital Comic Museum - Public Domain Comics
« on: 10 January, 2016, 08:42:24 pm »
Thanks to a delightful video on what is arguably the firstsuperhero comic book, Spring Heeled Jack, I discovered that tou can read a bunch of golden age comics at The Digital Comic Museum, where a huge mass of public domain comics from the likes of Lev Gleeson, Joe Kubert, and John Biro are avialble to read and download, free of charge. They even compiled character based "archive" editions for the likes of Blue Beetle, Phantom Lady and Silver Streak. I'm reading the Daredevil and The Claw collection via Chunky and it's quite bizarre to think these are over 80 years old and I can read them on my Ipad!

Classifieds / Wanted: Batman/Grendel
« on: 29 November, 2015, 09:15:33 pm »
About to give Wagner's Grendel saga a read and the only missing volume from my collection is the DC/Dark Horse Batman vs. Grendel, featuring two different crossovers.

It's somewhat hard to come by, but if anyone has a copy and is willing to name a price i'll be a happy man.
