Games / 3D or not 3D, that is the question
13 June, 2017, 01:02:13 PM
One of the major things people took away from the Xbox One X is that there seems to be no 3D support, after it was a key pitch during the early days of Project Scorpio.

Sony seems to still have dev support going by what was shown at E3

So my question to you is do you think that 3D has a future in console gaming? Sony say yes, Microsoft seem to be saying no. What say you?

Games / Xbox One X E3 Reveal
12 June, 2017, 08:29:15 AM
and what are they using to hype it?

MINECRAFT! IN 4K!

:O :O :O :O :O

oh and a bunch of indie titles. Nothing wrong with indie games, but if I'm shelling out for a new console I want to be able to see where that money went on screen.

I've got very little to go off other than it featured anthropomorphic animals in a fantasy adventure setting and isn't the Redwall series or Watership Down. I know it was a series of books and I think Rabbits seemed to play a big part. Any ideas what else it could have been?

Of course I could just be imagining things in my old age. That is possible.

Music / Guilty Pleasures

I've just found myself singing Spandau Ballet's Gold in the shower. Followed by The Devil Went Down To Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band.

Does anybody else have any embarrassing songs like they to sing when no one is listening?

Help! / Book Publishing Question
30 May, 2017, 01:45:37 PM
Hi all, I'm looking at self publishing my first book via all the usual digital delivery services and would like to know from anyone who has experience in this the best way to go about securing cover art. Are there artists who specialize in this and if so how does payment/use rights work? This isn't a big budget venture so keeping the cost down is of high importance to me. All help is appreciated thanks.

Off Topic / What's your avatar all about then?
25 May, 2017, 01:10:47 PM
Curious as to peoples chosen avatars and why they picked 'em.

I'll start I suppose

Mines a crap render of Iron Man. Chosen because when I was thinking about what I wanted as my avatar I happened to be listening to the song Iron Man (yes I know the song isn't about that Iron Man but anyway) so there he is. Otherwise it was gonna be a Xenomorph or The Supreme Leader (not Diana Ross)

anyone else?

Creative Common / Dictaphone recommendations
20 May, 2017, 02:22:32 PM
I come up with my best ideas while driving and so have decided to invest in a Dictaphone. I see they have different types for different situations. Does anyone know what kind would be best for recording whilst driving?

The machine I have my eye on is a Sony ICD-PX470 which is recommended for recording conversations. Any input is appreciated.

Film & TV / People who don't like Star Wars
20 May, 2017, 02:15:18 PM
I'm referring to the Disney era of Star Wars in particular. Although 1-3 could also fall under this category.

I was reading this (old) article on Star Wars merchandising (https://www.forbes.com/sites/natalierobehmed/2015/12/16/how-disneys-star-wars-merchandise-is-set-to-make-billions/#1b051c1e7314) which helped to affirm my belief that the modern day Star Wars films are a vehicle for selling toys/clothes/theme park tickets. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I can't help imagine that the new films would be so much better without having these things influence the production of the film.

I know this is nothing new, just another reason for why perhaps the new films don't seem as good as the old ones.

(yes I know I seem to have a thing for moaning about how much better things were in the olden days, no need to point that out to me)

Help! / Music file format question
17 May, 2017, 04:26:11 AM
I'm about to being ripping my cd collection to my PC to make accessing songs easier, since most cds are in storage right now. What file format would you suggest I rip them as? I currently use windows media player and will be streaming to wireless audio devices, so sound quality doesn't have to be audiophile quality, but it wouldn't hurt to future proof. I'm not an apple person so Itunes is out

any advice on file formats, ripping software and playback programs is appreciated

(Ideally I want a file type that isn't likely to be obsolete in the future)

Games / WH40K
15 May, 2017, 11:15:36 PM
Well a new version of 40k is coming out...not a revised edition but an all new edition. Meaning that all my codex's will now be obsolete. Thanks games workshop.

At least my current models will still be usable (!)

Film & TV / IMDB IS SCUM (so is rotten tomatoes)
22 April, 2017, 09:48:36 PM
I know of a few people who will use internet ratings of films to argue if a film is good or not. I hated Logan. Most disappointing film I've ever seen. But apparently it's just me because rotten tomatoes has it standing at 92%

But if you were to believe IMDBs rating system :

Fight Club is better than Alien
Gladiator is better than The Shining
The Departed is better than Taxi Driver

and Batman Begins is a better film than Raging Bull, Heat, Blade Runner, The Big Lebowski, The Deer Hunter, Fargo, No Country For Old Men, The Life Of Brian, Jurassic Park....

Regardless of if you use the scores these websites give to decide on what film to see, the fact is these numbers do impact film viewing for a lot of people. This is one of the reasons we have 8 (BLOODY EIGHT!) Fast And Furious films. I'm not sure where I'm going with this...but there is a point somewhere. I'll leave it to you to figure out.

Off Topic / Modern Life Is Rubbish
20 April, 2017, 01:59:54 AM
I'm curious to hear what everyone else misses from the olden days, or what you could live without today. I'm about to throw this iPad out the window because you can't uninstall this game from the cloud*

Nintendo 3DS is something else I could live without. Maybe it's because I've got long fingers, or because the thing is designed for children, but after more than an hour of playing I get really sore thumbs. And 3D is rubbish.

So if anyone else is having a bad time with technology please rant along with me, might make me feel better.

*I'm trying to reset the game because I'm at level 30 and it's boring and I want to start over. Delete the game, reinstall, still lvl 30. Delete from cloud storage, reinstall, still level 30. I've checked all the forums and such and there seems to be no way to delete it. You can hide it, but not delete.

Website and Forum / Can't post on specific boards
18 April, 2017, 09:37:49 PM
Hello. I was going to reply to the 4k release date post on the film discussion board but there was no option to reply. I went into the main board and there was no option to start a new thread. I've checked and the others seem to be fine, just that one for me. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

(I wasn't sure to post this here or on the Help! board, but this seemed more appropriate because it's about the forum. If I was wrong please move to the correct place) :)
