Events / Moniaive Comic Festival - June 10th and 11th 2017
« on: 30 April, 2017, 11:03:17 pm »
I've decided not to do Glasgow but will instead head to Moniaive Monitor on Saturday 10th June.

I'll be taking the car so if anybody wants a lift from Glasgow, let me know.

Film & TV / LOST HIGHWAY or MULHOLLAND DRIVE
« on: 13 April, 2017, 12:13:21 pm »
I've a chance to catch up with some of the Lynch I have missed at the GFT this month... but probably only manage the one movie.

So which should it be?

LOST HIGHWAY or MULHOLLAND DRIVE?

(I've seen all the other ones they are showing - except for TWIN PEAKS: THE MISSING BITS but I can't recall enough about TWIN PEAKS to make that a worthwhile investment of my time).

Anybody going to this?  They have a movie Lawmaster apparently.

I know most of you will be still glowing from the 40th birthday party but I'll be through on Saturday 18th so if anybody fancies meeting for a couple of pints, let me know.

Events / Frank Quitely Exhibition at Kelvingrove - April to October 2017
« on: 10 January, 2017, 07:39:27 pm »
http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/museums/kelvingrove/exhibitions/Pages/Frank-Quitely-The-Art-of-Comics.aspx

So this looks like a great excuse for another aborted attempt at a get together.

Let's start by noting who is interested in coming along and then we can work out a date. We have a six month window for this so should be able to manage one or two dates that mean different gangs can turn up.

My thoughts for the sort of day would be:
1100 - Meet at Gallery for a coffee
1115 to 1215 - wander round exhibition
1215 to 1230 - gift shop
1230 to 1400 - the 78 for lunch and beer
1400 until going home time - a West end pub crawl.

Or something like that but better.

So who is in?

Creative Common / Influences?
« on: 14 October, 2016, 06:41:51 pm »
Have we got a thread that talks about different artists influencesInfluences?

I've just been to an Alphonse Mucha exhibition at Kelvingrove and, probably just in my head,  all the way through I kept thinking "Frazer Irving".

Film & TV / DUNE
« on: 20 November, 2015, 06:34:41 pm »
I'm rereading this at the moment.

And because (take away my geek card) I think books are more valid when you make a cool film or tv show out of them, I'm wondering what to pick up.

I have a soft spot for the Lynch version despite its many flaws. Is there a good bluray with juicy extras and deleted scenes?

And what about the TV mini-series?

Plus how cool is it to say MUAD'DIB.

Go on, try it on for size.

Anybody else going?

It'll be my first day back off the wagon.

So this looks like about as good a match as you could get.

So apparently it's moving to the Concert Hall next year so everything will be under one roof.

CCA will still be 'a hub' showing films and stuff In the run up.

Sounds like good news to me - especially for those who were stuck up in the art school.

Excelsior! As they say.

Film & TV / SPACE:1999
« on: 25 September, 2015, 12:33:04 pm »
Annoyed that, twelve days back, I missed the 16th anniversary of our moon blasting out of orbit, I thought I'd check out some Space:1999 stuff.

I recall (and I haven't watched it since I was a kid so could be wrong)  absolutely loving Season 1 as a kid - oddly I liked Season 2 less even though, if I recall, it had more monstery stuff in it and was a bit more run down corridors.

So I watched Episode 1: Breakaway and actually quite enjoyed it.

The Production Design (and effects) are pretty much top-notch and still mostly stand-up. The pacing is a little off but, hey, that's how they did telly back then.

Things I didn't remember:
  • The whole focus on the planet "Meta" and how that might be a home for them.
The whole "space radiation madness" plot which led to the blast off.
    Philip Madoc!
How interchangeable all the leads are: they struggle to display much emotion and characterisation apart from the avuncular Barry Morse.
How little effort they make to try get back to earth. "Oh, we blasted out of orbit. The computer says we're screwed. Never mind." was about the level of it. They could have at least shown an effort by earth to reach them or vice versa.
How completely stupid the concept is. But, fuck it, I ran with it.
How, if you didn't know what the concept was, and if they hadn't given it away in the titeles, you'd have been suckered into it being a space mystery stopping us starting a Star Trek mission and then "Bang! Bloody hell! The whole moon has gone"

Things I did remember:
  • How fucking cool is the "electroknux" style phaser and the Eagle!
As much as I love the Enterprise and the Millenium Falcon, the Eagle is gorgeous piece of design. Possibly my favourite spaceship as a child (until the real Shuttle came along).

I shall be watching more. Which season is it that has an alien beastie in the back of an Eagle?  And when do Christopher Lee and Brian Blessed turn up.

Oh and any good "Making Of" documentaries that people would recommend?

Help! / facebook help?

Is there a setting that I can use so that I don't see when friends comment on other people's stuff (who I am not friends with). Can I tailor it to JUST taht one friend or will it impact all?

TL: DNR version
A friend of a friend keeps posting the most dreadful islamophobic shite under the guise of being concerned about christians and jews. She comments on it and I see it.
I really don't have the time, energy or smarts to go the source and challenge this person.
I should probably just unfriend her (her religous views also make her more than a little homophobic) but still have to see her and hubby and child in real social situations.
So, for now, ignoring it is my preferred option.

General / The "L" has fallen off my Judge badge...
« on: 30 June, 2015, 12:34:22 pm »
So now I'm Judge Gaswell.

Which given my diet, is funny.

But can I glue it back on with araldite?

It's one of those resin type ones from Planet Replicas (or is it Termight replicas?)

And would taking a letter out of your Judge badge make it funny?

(OK, I dropped an S as well to make the joke work)
