Help! / Printing advice
« on: 05 February, 2016, 06:58:19 pm »
Ok, this is a random one, but i think a couple of boarders here work in graphics/repro so thought it would be worth a shot.

Basically, i'm thinking of getting some illustrations printed onto kraft paper or board (that recycled, textured brown cardboard type stuff) for an exhibition type thing, but google isn't really coming up with anything. It'll just be simple blackline pen and ink type drawings.

Anyone know of a reputable online company that can do this kind of thing?

Creative Common / Drawing Productivity Tips
« on: 19 January, 2016, 07:34:29 pm »
Wanted to see if anyone has any kind of warm up routines or specific practices to keep productive when it comes to drawing/painting etc (or really any other creative endeavour).

My problem has always been that I'm not the speediest artist at the best of times, but also that almost every single time I sit down to draw I have to spend/waste 2-3 hours, sometimes even an entire day, churning out complete and utter shit and banging my head against a brick wall until I feel like I can actually produce anything halfway decent, and often by the time I'm through the barrier and have found my mojo again it's late and time for bed. I'll sometimes spend ages and ages grafting away on a picture that I think is really working, before suddenly the scales fall from my eyes and I realise its unsalvageable crap. This knowledge starts to play on my mind and really puts me off even bothering to try because I know I'll have to go through the whole painful process before I can even do anything worthwhile. Its enormously frustrating and is a large part of the reason that I have never seriously pursued a career in comics or illustration.

Now, largely this is down to not practising enough and having long periods of inactivity (which I am trying to address) - but it isn't just this, as often one day I'll be really productive, then the very next day it's like I have completely forgotten how to hold a pencil again.

So any tips or habits over creatives and professionals have of how to get round this would be much appreciated. Or even just some reassurance that it isn't just me that has this problem...

Creative Common / DREDD 2: A Fan Poster

Here's a little something I've been working on for a while now - I had the idea for the image and thought it might be a fun little 'what if' type project.

It was also a personal challenge to myself to learn a bit about digital painting, and to do something way out of my comfort zone, that isn't in my usual fallback, goofy drawing style. It's also probably the first big thing I've done that is pretty much 100% digital - aside from a tiny 1x1" thumbnail I scanned in as a starting point, everything was done in Photoshop.

Film & TV / Game of Thrones Season 5
« on: 13 April, 2015, 05:18:00 pm »
It's baaaaaack!

Very solid opening episode, I thought. It's astonishing how they keep ramping up the stakes, and how each season seems bigger and even more visually impressive than the last. It seems like they won't be doing anything else with Mance and that's probably for the best - I can't imagine the switcheroo they pull in the books working on screen and it's yet another plotline they wouldn't really have time for.

They're obviously going to be doing a lot of consolidating and cutting to get the plots of books four and five down to something manageable, and I totally get that. For the most part it works, I think. They're obviously fast-forwarding Tyrion's plotline, which is a no-brainer. The teased prospect of him meeting up with Danaerys really got my girlfriend (a far more casual viewer than me) interested so it makes sense to progress to that as soon as possible to keep up the momentum. I enjoyed books four and five more than most people seemed to, but they do feel like that episode of Itchy and Scratchy where they never make it to the fireworks factory.

A couple of minor quirks - did I imagine it or did Sansa and Littlefinger ride right past Pod and Brienne? Because if so that's more than a little silly. And I wasn't entirely happy with the way they're playing Stannis and Melisandre so far. I hope they don't portray them as straight antagonists for Jon Snow, as the tension, then subsequent burgeoning mutual respect between Jon, Stannis and Mel really showed another side to them and made them really likeable figures for the first time - to the point where I was really rooting for Stannis for the first time in the series.

Really looking forward to Theon's storyline this season, which for me was the standout of A Dance with Dragons. He's probably my favourite character in the whole series. During Dance it really dawned on me  - Theon is ASoIaF's Gollum/Smeagol isn't he?

Games / Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
« on: 25 February, 2015, 08:08:33 pm »
Jazzed for this... any love for Hotline Miami on the board?

After what seems like an eternity of delays and waiting, Hotline Miami 2 now officially has a release date - March 10th.

If you haven't heard of or played it, imagine if someone made an ultraviolent NES game based on the film Drive. I gather there's an actual plot to these games but really all you need to know if that you play as a weird misanthrope and have to murder your way through floors of buildings to pounding electro music.

It's currently 10% off if you pre-order now on Steam.

Help! / Wacom Advice
« on: 01 December, 2014, 07:15:43 pm »
I'm thinking about investing in a new Wacom, as the one I currently have (an Intuous4 Large) is just too big and unwieldy for my current desk space to use comfortably, and I also want the wireless capability to reduce clutter.

The 'small' (either Intuous5 or 'Pro') would be perfect size-wise, but I'm concerned it might be too small, considering I use a 27" monitor.

Ideally I'd be able to try it out myself, but failing that does anyone here have any hands-on experience of using smaller tablets on a large screen?

Books & Comics / Star Wars Digital Comics Humble Bundle
« on: 29 October, 2014, 04:21:51 pm »
Not my cup of blue milk, but Humble Bundle are currently offering a shit-tonne of Dark Horse Star Wars Comics tpbs in their latest deal. No Wagner or Cam Kennedy as far as I can see, bu the roster does include several Omnibus collections.

It's a pay what you want deal for the first 6 tpbs, (currently) $10.72 or more to get 15, then the whole set of 16 books for $15 or more.

Thought it might interest some of you lot....

Usagi fans, by popular demand, here's the latest version of the proof of concept short film that we created and presented to Stan. This is the short film that allowed us to procure the feature film rights!

It's a still a work-in-progress and about 90% complete. We're currently working on the sound mix and refining the film for the DVD release which will include behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, deleted scenes, and interesting details regarding the making of the featurette.

Books & Comics / Humble Image Bundle
« on: 29 April, 2014, 09:37:14 pm »
Just saw this on the Twitters, and not 100% sure if it's available in the UK, but check it out:

Humble Image Bundle - pay what you want for digital editions volumes one of East of West, Fatale, Lazarus and Morning Glories, and if you pay the average (just over a fiver) you get volume one of Saga, Revival and Chew too!

Well worth a punt.

Games / The Board Game Thread
« on: 21 February, 2014, 03:13:04 pm »
I'm gambling that there's a fair few board game players on this board, so thought I'd start a thread for general discussion, tips, news and especially recommendations etc of all thing board game - primarily 'serious' board and card games, but also happy to chat RPGs (though not a RPG guy myself) or the more common varieties (your Parker Brothers/Waddingtons/Hasbro etc).

I've recently dipped my toe in the board game waters when I, on a whim, requested a copy of Carcassonne for my birthday. It remained in its box for 6 months, and everyone I showed/told about it were very skeptical, but eventually I managed to convince a few friends and relatives to try a game with me, and it turns out it's fantastic fun - seriously, if you've never played it I can highly recommend it - it's extremely simple and quick to learn, gently competitive but not too much so, and really fast-paced too - an average game lasts about half an hour.

Its got to the point now where I've started a mini craze for the game in my social circle (had my family visiting recently and it was lovely that every night we'd all gather round the table for a few games, prying them away from their phones and tablets for a couple of hours!), and I've also bought the first two (of many) expansion sets - 'Inns and Cathedrals' and 'Traders and Builders'. I've also bought the iPad version, which is great for practice, but is a somewhat tweaked version of the board game.

I have a friend who's into the more hardcore side of things, and have played the Walking Dead board game with him, which was really good fun, but I tend to find it can be really hard to get a game of the more complicated games going as the average person is put off by the complexity (though funnily enough most people will play a game of the - imo - tedious and long-winded Monopoly - go figure).

I've heard good things about The Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and Fluxx - and I'm sorely tempted to buy the Fantasy Flight Game of Thrones board game too (despite fearing that I'll never be able to convince anyone to play it with me!). The new Star Wars X-Wing/TIE Fighter game looks intriguing, but perhaps a little too nerdy/expensive to bother with.
