Film & TV / True Detective
« on: 01 March, 2014, 10:21:46 PM »
Anyone else watching this?
Wasn't quite sure about the first episode, so I thought I'd give it two before passing comment. Problem is, I'm still unsure about it.
Well shot, good lead actors (as expected), compelling (if a little Hannibal-ish) plot.

I just...don't actually know if I like it or not.
Only 8 episodes in total (each season is planned to have a different story / cast) so it won't be a huge commitment either way.

Anyway, my guess after 5 minutes was that Woody was the killer. Too obvious?

Classifieds / Help a brother get some Garth Brooks tickets!
« on: 31 January, 2014, 12:20:40 AM »
One for my fellow Republicans:
I was tasked with purchasing Garth Brooks tickets for my lovely missus and her sisters this morning, and like many others, faced the most frustrating two hour trudge of my life; staring at an unmoving and unforgiving Ticketmaster loading screen.
I reported my failure at 11.15am, and suffice to say, she hasn't taken it well (she hasn't spoken to me all day!).

She's obviously a huge fan (I'm not- I couldn't name more than two songs the guy ever sang, and am a bit taken aback by what I can only call a frenzy to get tickets for these gigs).
If any Irish boarders out there have 2 - 5 tics for sale, I'd really appreciate you helping out a fellow boarder.
Prices on some ticket websites are ranging from €300 to €800!
Don't be cruel (hey, that was Elvis wasn't it)?

Seriously though, this is a genuine request.

Cheers,
Richard

Events / The Gaffer hits Dublin!

A must-attend appointment for me: Pat Mills will be signing the newly collected 'Book of Scars' (and everything else I throw in front of him) on Wednesday 4th December at 6.00pm.

Location: Big Bang Comics, Dundrum Town Centre.

Free 2000AD print for the first 100 peeps, though I'd say attendance will be high, and I won't get there from work til after 7pm, so likely not for me!

Off Topic / Good Drinkin'
« on: 10 October, 2013, 05:15:43 PM »
Dunno if there's been a thread on the topic before, but I haven't seen one, so here goes:

Drinkin- I'm pretty sure the majority of us enjoy it.
You really can't beat a good pint.

This is the kind of thread that could veer off-topic quite easily, so lets keep it to beers / ales / stouts; your top three pints, and locations you've had the best one in;

I'll kick it off...

Porterhouse Red- this ale is unbelievably tasty & delicious. I literally crave the stuff. There are a few Porterhouses around Dublin (and one in New York & London too I think), but the best pint of it I've had is in the original Porterhouse in Bray Co. Wicklow.
Great place for a summer drink, especially with a bit of live music outside.

Guinness- Ye can't beat a decent pint of the Black Stuff! In my opinion (and pretty much the majority of Dubliners too) the best pint can be found in Mulligans. Don't visit Dublin without stopping by for one- its smoother than a glass of milk.

Galway Hooker- calm down there Mods, I'm talkin bout the newest & tastiest ale on the block. Only tried this for the first time in Galway in early 2013, and have since seen it on tap in a few other bars.
Best place to try it is The Bier Haus in Galway (a drinkers utopia).

Looking forward to seeing some recommendations from the UK, as I'd visit a couple times a year.

Off Topic / Luck o' the Irish; Part II
« on: 30 September, 2013, 01:46:37 PM »
Howdy peeps- fancy some free signed comics?

Have the following from last weekend's DICE;

2000AD Prog 1850 signed by Mike Carroll (Dredd script bot that week), PJ Holden, John McCrea, Mike Molcher & Si Spurrier.

Two asides;
Si Spurrier insisted on signing Dredd's crotch.
Someone (I think Mike Carroll's wife) asked Mike Molcher why 'Legion' was on the cover. Molcher twirled his mustache then explained that "its a 2000AD fan- blown away by Thrill-Power". Despite his current position, tragically unaware that the average 2000AD fan more closely resembles Phil Mitchell.

Totally free to enter comp; as with last year, each reply to this thread will be assigned a sequential number, winner is the first of those numbers to be pulled for next Saturday nights Irish Lotto.

Film & TV / Cliffhangers
« on: 02 September, 2013, 02:45:45 PM »
My youngest sister got in touch recently, asking if I had any good DVD's or Blu-Rays she could borrow, in particular TV show box-sets.
We somehow got into a conversation about TV shows we watched together years ago (being the oldest kid in the house meant I had the first-born privilege of deciding what we watched on the 'spare' TV, and her tastes had to align to that).

Something we always agreed on was this; a good end-of-season cliffhanger was the highlight of any TV show arc (the denouement rarely living up to the set-up of course).
This obviously had more of an effect in the pre-Netflix / box-set / access to torrents time period when you had to actually wait 8 months to find out what happened next.
There are so many cool moments from so many cool shows (Star Trek, X-Files, Buffy, Angel, Farscape, Lost, BSG etc) that immediately spring to mind. It's almost impossible to choose one.

Well, after a bit of mulling it over, here's mine;

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQR1qLyG94w

The end of DS9 Season 5; The 5-years-in-the-waiting re-take of Terok Nor by Gul Ducat.
Goose bumps people, goose bumps.

So...whats yours?

Games / GTA V
« on: 16 August, 2013, 08:51:28 PM »
So; it's a mere 4 weeks away, and I'm busily trying to clear the decks of any other games currently in play (Darksiders 2, will you ever end?) to ensure all available gaming / real life time will be furrowed into this.

From what I've seen so far, I'm excited. Predictably so.
The announcement yesterday regarding an online mode akin to 'Red Dead Redemption' is the icing on the cake.
Nothing warrants your devotion like those first few days playing a new GTA- lookin forward to cappin somma you fools in the near future!

I had a pretty great time at my first 'real' convention last year, and am looking forward to this year's just as much (28th & 29th Sept).

Several really cool guests already announced (Greg Capullo, Paul Cornell, PJ Holden, Will Sliney, Becky Cloonan & Doug Braithwaite), and have just heard that Jock will be attending too.
Can't wait to get a Dredd sketch from him!

General / Luck o' the Irish
« on: 02 October, 2012, 08:54:54 PM »
Since there were several Zarjaz 2000AD creators in attendance at last weekends Dublin International Comic Expo, I couldnt pass up the opportunity to get a few multi-signature Progs.
I have a spare copy of Prog 1802, topically signed by that Progs Dredd creators Mike Carroll & PJ Holden, and also signed by Rob Williams, Si Spurrier and former Mighty One Andy Diggle.

100% Free-raffle time Ladies & Gentlemen; just indicate your interest by thread reply and you'll be assigned a number by numerical sequence.
Winner wil be by a fair method such as using an upcoming lottery number.

Best o' luck!
Richard

Anyone know when it's available?

Books & Comics / Legends of the Dark Knight (2012)
« on: 23 June, 2012, 01:24:19 PM »
Anyone else getting this?
Its a very cheap (€0.79 / £0.69) series being distributed as a digital exclusive on a weekly basis on the Comixology / DC app.
Just finished the 3rd issue, bloomin great stuff.

I know it was mentioned previously on other threads, but this kind of format would be a great supplement to 2000AD / The Meg.

Based on the quality I've read so far, it seems I have a second default weekly purchase to make.

Books & Comics / Grant Morrison Sale
« on: 28 May, 2012, 10:32:35 AM »
Looks like a 5 day Grant Morrison sale just started on Comixology.
All the usual suspects (The Invisibles, JLA, Batman), but I'll be goin for the as yet unread Doom Patrol.

Also, you could pick up WE3 for €2.37.
There shouldn't be an iPad or laptop on earth without that little gem downloaded.

I find EBay mildly tedious...

Books & Comics / Joe Casey @ Image
« on: 21 April, 2012, 12:23:58 AM »
Just saw a 3 day Comixology sale on Joe Casey's Image stuff.
Anyone read 'Godland' or 'Officer Downe (Bigger Better Bastard Edition)'...looks good, but I don't wanna impulse buy a shed load of digitals without the Squaxx seal of approval!
