I like the whimsical Hogan of Timehouse and RoboHunter very much.
Less keen on the portentous Hogan of Dragon Tales and Strontium Dogs.
(I retain a soft spot for the villainous Alphabet Men, though)

I've not read any of his post-2000AD work, but get the feeling that a) I should have and b) Bish-Op was wrong to throw him out with the bathwater!

That's the thing though, Hogan was a good writer. I'd take his Strontium Dogs over Garth's any day (I am preparing myself to forgive the latter for demystifying and slaughtering the Lyrans, as well as giving Feral a silly and predictable backstory.)

Didn't Peter Hogan write that Steel Claw in the excellent Action Special? Between that the Cursitor Doom story, it showed that two writers whose normal stuff was just ok were capable of brilliance when given the right characters.

They used to speak about his 'Robert Redford good looks' back then.  Gold-tinted glasses, it would seem.

At least Otto was only ugly on the outside.

Also I should point out that AyMajji's first post is a cut-and-paste of one of mine.  Mods?

Can I just check before I take offence, was it intended to be insulting or just a bit of baiting?

Neither! I just couldn’t work out what it stood for! Reading it back, I can see why you might have thought that, though. My apologies — no insult intended.

Either way up, I love the expression Galumphing King of Shite and will be using it in the near future.

Tbh I find the overuse of 90s cultural signifiers very jarring and breaks any notion that it’s a real futurescape rather than one drawn by someone who really likes Rik Mayall. One or two Easter eggs is fine, an image of non-stop late c-20th references isn’t.

On the other side the bike and Clara Pandy look turbo.

It works for me.  There's a long tradition of MC1 citiblocks being named after obscure pop culture flash-in-the-pan celebrities, which is very much part of the comedy side of Dredd's world.
There is an Andrew Ridgely Block in Wagner's MC1.

Durrr....

See the points where I said ‘overuse’ and ‘one or two...is fine’.

But thanks for pointing out what is clearly never grasped in 30 years of reading  ::)

Didn't mean to patronise you, and I apologise if that's how it came out. I was just trying to point out that I had a different view to yours, and explaining my reasons, rather than trying to inform you of something you as a reader obviously already know.

That Boris speech. Sweet Jesus.

When we run out of Mars bars, will the UK finally see sense?

It's only a suggestion, but it might be an idea if we all stopped calling him Boris, which plays into his own carefully constructed image of a cuddly, matey lad-next-door.  He's a cynical, calculating fuck that has never known anything other than how the entitled rich live.

He can have his surname like every other politician, or even better, that word I used for Farage that got me a week's ban from the forum.

Speaking of that particular profanity, Trump has his bovine followers shouting 'send her back'.  Where is it all going to end? The west is broken now, and it won't be fixed any time soon.

You know the one person guaranteed not to win this Ian Gibson competition?

Is it Buttonman?  It's Buttonman, isn't it?
I believe professionals are disqualified.

How could anyone compete?

I really didn't like it at first. One of the main reasons was Robbie's tendency back then to put all the wrong words in bold, making the dialogue all jerky and weird.  Also I thought Nikolai was a wanker.  But RM fixed his dialogue, and his main character,  and it turned out bloody brilliant.

2) generally revolve around a strongly defined central character, usually a titular character (and if they have one or more memorable catchphrases, all the better)

Well, as long as the catchphrase wasn't squeezed in long after the strip lost its way.  Let's knife!

Amazing stuff. Well done, I love it.

This is what the first Dredd film should have looked like. Although ideally it would have had different actors, a different plot and different dialogue too. And a different director.

But I digress.  At the risk of being given an inch and expecting a mile, do you have an animated version of it, Dan?

I love it anyway, and I'm looking forward to seeing more  They remind me of that Brendan McCarthy colour Dredd in one of the annuals - can't remember the name but there were hot girls in it and someone called Chivon.

The new Lawmaster and slimline H-Wagon are lovely too.

For me, it wasn't Millar's Robohunter that pissed me off.  I only had very vague and distant memories of the original at the time.  I feel obliged to point out that sex-bomb Cutie was a couple of years before the rise of the lad mag (Our Bish -OP surfed the waves of that one more).

No, it was Garth Ennis's Dredd.  Shallow, boring tat almost to an episode, and in every single prog (the return of Wagner hadn't been planned:yet at this point).  I had a friend in university who knew him; I just hoped she wouldn't ever introduce me as I just knew I wouldn't be able to even pretend I liked his work.

To be fair to Garth, he admits he dropped the ball and has since become one of the best writers in the industry.

Also, I quite liked Kola Kommandos.

Go back where you came from.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that because a lot of people agree with me.

Disgusting.

It's unbelievable, isn't it?  A few years ago we would have been all over this thread in shock and dismay.  These days we're just shaking our heads sadly.  The water's getting pretty warm but we're staying put; there's nowhere to hop to.
