General / Comixology IDW Judge Dredd sale!
« on: 07 May, 2019, 01:39:16 am »
I couldn’t see if this had been posted anywhere:

https://m.comixology.co.uk/Judge-Dredd-Sale

I’m not sure of the quality of the IDW Dredd stuff, except the Mars Attacks one, which is currently an absolute bargain!

Does anyone have any other IDW Dredd recommendations?

Events / Lawless Model Raffle
« on: 11 March, 2019, 07:48:09 pm »
I am pleased to announce I will be creating a Lawless exclusive clay model, and raffling it at the event. All proceeds will be in aid of Save the Children. More on the model as it is created, although it will fit with the theme of the event - watch this space!

In the meantime, I am also raffling three existing models in the run up to the event, via the JustGiving page below (also for Save the Children). The draw will take place at Lawless, alongside the draw for the exclusive model.

It’s £2 per raffle ticket. I’m hoping to reach £300 ahead of Lawless.

Please give generously, and good luck in the raffle!

Film & TV / Kingdom - Netflix
« on: 12 February, 2019, 06:08:02 pm »
Blimey - Kingdom on Netflix! A Korean period drama set in feudal times, like Water Margin, but with SHITLOADS OF ZOMBIES!!!!

It’s bloody brilliant! With the emphasis on ‘bloody’.

Film & TV / Russian Doll - Netflix
« on: 04 February, 2019, 01:20:48 pm »
Anyone watched this?  I think it has been added recently.

I chained it on the weekend - lots of nice half hour episodes.

Basically, it's a Groundhog Day-style story of people stuck in a 24 hour time loop, where at the end of each 24 hour period the protagonist dies in a more unfortunate and horrible way.  The loop is a narrative device, rather than anything blamed on aliens or other-hand waving stuff, as it allows the characters to moved inwards (like a Russian Doll!) as they explore their own damage and how they get past it.

The characters are excellent, particularly the lead role, and the humour is dark as hell, and laugh out loud funny.  On face value it may appear shallow, but it's multi-layered as hell, with any number of ways to interpret the events and key things that recur - the loss of her cat, the importance of the book, mirrors etc.

Very much recommended.

Help! / Introducing a youngster to Philip K Dick
« on: 13 October, 2017, 01:05:52 pm »
Hi all

My daughter is really into the Electric Dreams series, and has asked if she can read some of my PKD books.

The thing is, I’ve no idea where to start! I don’t want to put her off by shoving something like The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch under her nose. I was thinking maybe a book of short stories, like Beyond Lies the Wub.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Help! / Pat Wagon? H-Wagon? Manta? What are the differences?
« on: 27 October, 2016, 09:47:26 am »
The vehicles Justice Dept use have always confused me. Some are used to collect perps, some are offensive, some are at the scene of riots, some are airborne, some are ground based, some just seem to provide surveillance.

Which are which?!?

Could someone help me get to grips with the vehicles and what they do please?

Is there a write-up somewhere? Or could someone give me a quick summary with links to pictures or pages from the progs?

Events / Prog 2000 signing - Cardiff Forbidden Planet
« on: 02 October, 2016, 11:19:33 am »
An excellent crowd for the signing in Cardiff this weekend! The queue was constant. It was great to catch up with some folk too!

Judges Purcell and Pal were on protection duty, plus Cadet.

Here are some pics, with David Roach and Patrick Goddard.

Help! / Snow in 2000AD
« on: 02 July, 2016, 03:08:44 pm »
Howdy folks! I've been thinking about when snow appears in 2000AD stories. Random, I know.

Do you have any favourite scenes or stories from the Prog that featured snow in some manner or another?

Off Topic / Vegetarian meal help needed! (with drawbacks)
« on: 07 January, 2016, 03:50:40 pm »
I have been tasked with creating a straightforward vegetarian meal for two, but for a person with some quite severe food allergies.

I need a recipe that DOES NOT contain the following:

Eggs
Mushroom
Peppers
Tomato
Celery

Can anyone suggest anything please?

I need to be able to gather the ingredients and get it cooked between 6.30pm and 8pm, so time is short!!

Film & TV / Whovians - web tv series
« on: 04 November, 2015, 10:07:52 am »
Hi all

Seeing as we have some Dr Who fans on the board (most of you presumably?  ;) ) I thought I'd flag up the new web series, Whovians:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9bB5kUDBlibTePkBuieI8w

http://geeksin.wales/2015/11/03/whovians-web-series-for-doctor-who-fans/

It follows a group of Dr Who fans, their lives, loves, and conventions.  There will be a new episode each week, with the final coinciding with the last in the current series of Dr Who.

You might spot a certain Planet Replicas Judge in episode 4...  ;)

Creative Common / Making my own (non-2000AD) Sun WuKong!
« on: 28 August, 2015, 02:28:06 pm »
At least one of you seemed amenable to me posting a non-2000AD creation, so here he is.

I'm still working on him - had a nasty accident after baking him which  left him in pieces on my kitchen floor, but after some repair work he's ready to paint.

Some of you may remember the tattoo I have of the Monkey King on my back. He's been with me ever since I saw the Japanese TV series as a child.  I've also read a couple of the translations of Journey to the West, and seen quite a few films. I have countless bits of Monkey King tat scattered about the house.

Anyway, I wanted to do a homage to the source - the TV series.  However, I wanted to add my own flavour.  As such, while he's wearing the TV outfit, the rest I made up as I went along.

Anyway, here he is so far:

Creative Common / Making my own... Judge Dredd! (ish)
« on: 24 August, 2015, 11:38:53 am »
It was only a matter of time before I turned to our favourite lawman of the future!

I have actual built this already, and it's ready for painting, but I'm going to gradually post the progress shots over the next day or two to see if you can figure out which Dredd I've gone for.

For those of you who've seen it evolve on Facebook, don't let on!

Anyway, this time instead of recreating a particular panel I have instead chosen an artist and a story, and created Dredd as a composite of several panels.

While it doesn't quite ape the artist's style, it's there in spirit.

It's a beast of a piece, bigger than Sensitive Klegg.  I thought it would either turn out well or go to the dogs real quick.

Anyway, here's the first pic:

Any initial thoughts?
