Big ) in a nutshell (ie, without me googling for the names of individual creators and companies involved):  At the end of 'series 1' - the original Japanese creative team called it a day and moved on to other projects, leaving behind a thirteen-episode mini-series that could happily sit alongside the likes of overrated boreathon Evangelion as a giant-robot show with a brain.
Unfortunately, as they often don't - the guys who buy shows for transmission on Cartoon Network in America didn't get that the seemingly abrupt ending was actually THE ENDING of the show, and offered silly money to the company who produced the thirteen episodes to see the show 'completed' - at which point the creators rushed out thirteen follow-up episodes that spoon-fed the backstory to the audience, rather than let them figure it out themselves, and filled the show with navel-gazing philosophical meandering and biblical references.
The second half of the series was terrible, and the first half might have had an abrupt end, but Joss Whedon thought it was good enough to rip off for the final ever episode of Angel.  About the only good idea in the second half of the series was the moment when Roger Smith realised he was a fictional character in a tv show, but the people in charge of the English-language dubbing ruined that by seemingly failing to understand the concept themselves.

Robohunter at some stage
Atavar after the first series
Durham Red before her last appearance
Chopper before his last appearence

Not Skizz....sure Skizz II was a rambling mess, but Skizz III was great fun, really good shaggy dog story
