What do people here go for. A bit of story, or a great single image of a character or event?
Greg M has this pretty well covered but I'll still add my thoughts...
For me, it starts with the artist. Some artists I'd love
anything by (as in I'd settle for a single decent example of their work - O'Neill and Bolland, pretty much), a few artists I'd take pretty much all I can handle (McCarthy & Cam Kennedy being my main weaknesses) and others I look for a good representative pairing of the artist with the character(s) I associate most with them (Ewins Bad Co., Ezquerra Strontium Dog, etc.). For the latter group, given a choice (money, availability, patience) I'll wait until I come across a page that jumps out at me for whatever reason; I've picked up some great splash pages as well as pages that crackle with wonderful dialogue. In the end, there are always far too many memorable images, scenes or stories and far too few opportunities to buy the original artwork associated with these, but when you find a page that really resonates with you, you know it.
Looking at my art collection it's really hard to pick a few favourites as the diversity of the artwork (the styles, characters, stories, pages - and panels and the details with those) are what makes this such a fascinating and infuriatingly moreish habit.
One other thing I'll say is that with contemporary art, I really miss the lack of dialogue - as much a part of the artwork as the brushstrokes on the page. Some things stand up perfectly well on their own without dialogue (the McCarthy Walking Dredd page I have is fantastic in this respect) but others just feel a bit flat without the chat.
