Yeah my boy child read it when he was seven. Absolutely devoured it in fact. My copies still live in his room!

Another vote for Calvin & Hobbes- my daughter started in to it when she was 7 or so, and my full collection still wanders in and out of her room at 10. "Bats - Giant Bug Terror of the Skies" has influenced her homework ever since.  Ageless and timeless.
