Solaris has released a free online copy of one of the British Fantasy Society Award-nominated stories from its celebrated anthology of horror stories set in and around the Underground.

'The Lure', by Nicholas Royle, is now available as a free download. Both it and The End of the Line anthology were nominated last month for the prestigious awards

'The Lure' – an erotically-charged tale of voyeurism and dread sparked when someone sees an unusual stranger on the Paris Metro – is a stand-out tale in an anthology that The Times described as "...an excellent sampling of the best writers in this field...".

'The Lure' is available to download as a PDF from Solaris' website.

Royle's first novel for Solaris, Regicide, will be published in September.

Released in October last year, The End of the Line has been nominated in the Best Anthology category for the 2011 awards while The Lure has been nominated for Best Short Story.

This collection of 19 new stories includes thoughtful, disturbing and terrifying subterranean tales by Ramsey Campbell, Christopher Fowler, Mark Morris, Pat Cadigan, Adam Nevill and Michael Marshall Smith, amongst many others.

The title has received widespread critical acclaim: 'Fallen Boys' by Mark Morris was chosen by Ellen Datlow for Best Horror of the Year Volume 3 and by Stephen Jones for Best New Horror 22. Datlow said of the anthology: "The variety and quality is admirable... One of the best of the year."

The end of July is the deadline for voting by members of the BFS, as well as attendees of the annual FantasyCon event – where the winners will be announced in September.

Confirming its commitment to new digital formats, Solaris announces that it is to release a free eBook ahead of its newest fantasy series, The Hadrumal Crisis, by Juliet E. McKenna.

The Wizard's Coming serves as a prequel for The Hadrumal Crisis – McKenna's upcoming trilogy from Solaris, hitting bookshops in August.

Originally published in Solaris' anthology The Solaris Book of New Fantasy in 2007, the book introduces some of the characters and events leading up to this stunning new fantasy series from a major voice in fantasy writing.

The first book in the trilogy, Dangerous Waters, will see McKenna tear into her fantasy world in a thrilling re-invention of the genre.

The Archmage rules the island of wizards and has banned the use of magecraft in warfare, but there are corsairs raiding the Caladhrian Coast, enslaving villagers and devastating trade. Lady Zurenne's husband has been murdered by the corsairs, and a man she doesn't even know stands watch over her and her daughters. Corrain, former captain and now slave to the corsairs, knows that Zurenne's guardian is a rogue wizard. If Corrain can only escape, he'll see justice done. Unless the Archmage's magewoman, Jilseth, catches the renegade first...

Jonathan Oliver, editor-in-chief of Solaris, said:
"Juliet E. McKenna is up there with George R.R. Martin and Steven Erikson in terms of intelligent and involving epic fantasy. This e-book will pave the way for new fans to come to the series as well as giving something extra to those who have already been following the career of this brilliant writer."

Juliet E. McKenna said:
"Every series of books I've ever written has started with the question, 'what if?' After a decade of keeping magic out of warfare, I began wondering what if the Archmage's authority was challenged? Initially the answer was enough to underpin this short story. Writing it then showed me just how far-reaching and how dramatic the unexpected consequences could be. I'm delighted to have this chance to share the first step on the road to The Hadrumal Crisis with both new and established readers – this free eBook is the perfect way for people to discover this world and its characters."

About the Author
Juliet E. McKenna is the renowned author of The Chronicles of the Lescari Revolution, The Tales of Einarinn series and The Aldabreshin Compass sequence. Dangerous Waters marks the start of a major new fantasy trilogy.

Individual 'progs' to become available through Diamond in US

2000 AD is proud to announce a step change in the way it is distributed in the USA.

From August, the legendary weekly British title will be featured in Diamond Distribution's Previews magazine as individual issues, known as 'progs' – with October's Prog 1754 being the first retailers and consumers can order as a single issue.

Presently, copies of 2000 AD are bound in monthly packs of four or five issues that can be ordered from Diamond. This means readers have to shell out up to $25 for a single item.

However, this distribution change means that 2000 AD will once again be a weekly comic on both sides of the Atlantic – giving readers the chance to pick up thirty-two pages of action EVERY week for a fraction of the cost of one of the monthly packs.

Overseas readers who prefer their comics digitally can also download copies of 2000 AD via Clickwheel.net, with digital releases only a week behind physical copies, and for just £1.49 ($2.44) – making them great value in the current market.

Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said:
"This is a great step forward in 2000 AD's mission to bring the best of British to American readers and we're delighted that we are to become a weekly publication in the US, just like we are in the UK.
"Twenty dollars for one of the monthly packs is a lot of cash to hand over for a single purchase, especially for what to many in the US remains an unknown quantity, so by distributing each issue every week we're hoping American readers will be tempted by our blend of high-octane action and first class comics talent."

Now available to download for 99 cents through Kindle (69p) and iTunes (49p), fans of Boy's Own adventure and insane steampunk shenanigans will love this thrilling collection of short stories following the dandy, detective and adventurer Ulysses Quicksilver – the perfect introduction to the acclaimed steampunk world of Pax Britannia.

In Fruiting Bodies a gruesome death leads Ulysses and his manservant Nimrod to the glasshouses of Kew, bringing them face to face with the horrors lurking within. A Hallowe'en séance leads our intrepid duo into a close encounter with the world beyond in Vanishing Point, while in White Rabbit Ulysses journeys into a world of madness and murder, meeting some sinisterly familiar characters along the way.

All titles in the Pax Britannia series are available as eBooks – part of Abaddon's mission to bring the best of genre fiction to fans in new and exciting formats.

Jonathan Oliver, editor-in-chief of Abaddon Books, said:
"Abaddon is committed to bringing the best genre fiction to the widest audience possible and it's a great delight to be able to present these stories in this format at such an attractive price."

About the Series
Pax Britannia was Abaddon's fourth shared world, launching with Jonathan Green's Unnatural History in February 2007. A steampunk alternative history set in a late twentieth century in which Queen Victoria – now nearing the end of her sixteenth decade on the throne, and wholly dependent on steam technology for survival – rules over the vastly wealthy, powerful and decadent Empire of Magna Britannia. Airships ply the skies overhead as gentlemen of leisure admire the dinosaurs in London Zoo, while the Empire has extended to the Moon. Across the pond, the United Socialist States of America, loosely allied with the might of Magna Britannia, is home to dreamers, poets, madmen, and heroes, poised to usher in a new era.

The series has included seven books by Jonathan Green, featuring the adventures of Ulysses Lucian Quicksilver, dandy and adventurer and agent of the throne; an omnibus collecting the first three is currently available.

About the Author
Jonathan Green is well known for his contribution to the Fighting Fantasy range of adventure gamebooks as well as his novels in Games Workshop's world of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. The creator of the world of Pax Britannia, Anno Frankenstein is his seventh novel for Abaddon. www.paxbritannia.com

28 June 2011 • $7.99/$9.99 (US & CAN)

ALSO AVAILABLE AS AN EBOOK

There's a worse horror lurking in the crumbling tower blocks of Britain than just feral gangs of hoodie-wearing teenagers, lone sharks and chavs. Welcome to the Concrete Grove. It knows where you live...

In a serious, literary and thrilling work of true contemporary horror, Gary McMahon conjures up a very different kind of 'Broken Britain' – a horrific vision of dark urban streets where crime, debt and violence are not the only things to fear. A housing project has become a gateway to somewhere else, a realm where ghosts and monsters stir hungrily in the shadows.

Presented by one of the most exciting up-and-coming authors in British genre fiction today, this chilling new horror trilogy shows us a Britain many of us will recognise, while whispering of the terrible and arcane presences clawing against the boundaries of our reality.

"Concrete Grove is easily Gary McMahon's most accomplished work to date. A compelling novel of extremes, it plots an exhilarating course through an unstable landscape of fragile love and blistering hate, of divinity and depravity, of the crushingly mundane and the numinously surreal."
– Mark Morris on Concrete Grove

Clockwork zombies, criminal families, fallen gods, an ancient horror thirsting for vengeance – when trouble comes looking for Jacob Burn, it doesn't do half measures.

The failed zeppelin pilot and outcast may have saved the city of Veridon from destruction, but that doesn't mean it's grateful. Burn now finds himself on his own, on the wrong side of the law and on borrowed time as he is appointed to investigate the rise of the 'cog-dead.'

Wrapped in a stunning cover from comic book legend Greg Staples, Tim Akers' fantastic hard-boiled Steampunk-Clockpunk story is a thrilling mix of rich characterisation and dramatic action set in a detailed and disturbing world that leaps off the page.

"The book is fantastically imaginative, the dialogue pitch perfect, the story screaming to be an Alex Proyas film." – Lou Anders on Heart of Veridon

21 years after first publication, new The Horned God special edition arrives

It's the comic book that changed comic books forever – exquisite painted artwork and imaginative characters creating a breathtaking showcase of the new direction of adult storytelling in comics.

Twenty-one years ago, Pat Mills and Simon Bisley's Sláine: The Horned God took the Celtic barbarian in a stunning new direction. And now this magical, violent classic is blazing its way to the US in a new hard-cover dust-jacket edition – complete with commentary from Mills, and sketches by Bisley.

Shamelessly displaying the potential for full colour painted artwork, The Horned God spawned thousands of imitators and remains one of 2000 AD's greatest exports – a sweeping epic that incorporates Celtic mythology with Game of Thrones-style dynastic politics and good old fashioned barbarian violence.

Sláine the Barbarian – created by Mills and his then-wife, Angie Kincaid – first stomped onto the pages of 2000 AD in 1983, accompanied by the duplicitous dwarf, Ukko, and his faithful stone axe, Brainbiter. Witty, dynamic and unashamedly brutal, the series soon became a fan favourite and went on to feature artwork from some of the top names in the industry – Glenn Fabry, Mick McMahon and Greg Staples. However, Bisley was one of the first to popularise the fully-painted style pioneered by Argentinian artist Alberto Brecchia.

Sláine's saga continues until this day, with Clint Langley's lush computer-based art creating an impressive counterpoint to the slick painting of The Horned God.

When mankind made 'first contact' with the Byrzaens, the age old question of whether we are alone in the universe was finally answered ...

But black ops specialist Jim Leyton and scientist-cum-business-mogul-turned-AI Philip Kaufman both begin to suspect that this profound moment in human history is not what it seems – as they find themselves pitted against the vested interests of human and alien, in both the real world and in the realm known as Virtuality.

In the follow up to his acclaimed novel The Noise Within, Ian Whates cements his position as a major new voice in science-fiction with a thrilling tale of deadly games played for high stakes amid vast conspiracies.

"Unreasonably enjoyable. 24 meets Starship Troopers. If you read Reynolds, Hamilton, Banks – read this." – Stephen Baxter on The Noise Within

About the Series

In a world of posthumans, powerful AIs, virtual worlds and faster-than-light travel, there is little left that can truly challenge humanity's grip on their world... except the discovery of alien life. Billionaire industrialist Philip Kaufman and top government black-ops agent Jim Leyton have their lives turned upside-down by the mysterious pirate vessel The Noise Within, which seems to be able to do the impossible: to travel between the stars without the wormholes that the ULAW's own ships require. Hunted and betrayed, the two men eventually make the discovery that will change the human race forever, and make first contact with intelligent life from another world.
The Noise Within established Ian Whates as a talent to be reckoned with, blending hard SF and high-octane space opera in an explosive mix reminiscent of Alastair Reynolds or Iain M. Banks at their best. A thrilling and original setting of life-changing technology and murderous intrigue, the United League of Allied Worlds is a place you'll want to come back to.

"The Noise Within is an A+ for me ... I expect it to develop to be among the best space opera series around." – Fantasy Book Critic

About the Author
Ian Whates is a director of both the Science-Fiction Writers Association and the British Science-Fiction Association. He is also the proprietor and editor of NewCon Press. The Noise Revealed is his second novel with Solaris.

Dying of cancer, combating demons and swigging from a bottle of laudanum – Inspector Harry Absalom ain't exactly Inspector bloody Morse.

Mixing The Sweeney with The X-Files, Absalom is the latest dark tale from Necronauts writer Gordon Rennie, brought to gritty life with artwork from newcomer Tiernen Trevallion.

Premièring in 2000 AD® prog 1732 tomorrow (5th May), Absalom is a pseudo-spin-off from Rennie's popular but unfinished Caballistics series for 2000 AD about a freelance team of demon hunters caught up in an ancient game of good versus evil.

An old-school London copper, Absalom has been on the force for 40 years. He's also head of a special squad that enforces The Accord, a diplomatic treaty made in the 15th Century between the throne of England and the powers of Hell, keeping tabs on the demons who walk amongst us.

Dark, nasty and just a little bit funny – Absalom is another twisted tale from 2000 AD that lends new meaning to the phrase 'demonic forces'.
