Well, my copy has arrived, and man, The Thirteenth Floor really goes mental after Max moves to the department store. I can remember the early episodes of that phase fairly well - great to see the Ian Kennedy wraparound cover again, with the monsters on the escalator - but the later 'secret agent' stuff is only stirring the dimmest of memories, and I'm not sure I've ever read the episodes where he's reinstalled at Maxwell Tower. I presume there's still enough of that era to reprint for a Vol. 3?

It's wonderfully mad. As far as I recall there are about 145 episodes of TTF, so there should be enough (50 or so episodes) for another volume.

Comedy generally doesn't age well. When you look back at many of the comics you used to like, the yucks aren't so plentiful.

Quote from: sheridan on 30 September, 2020, 09:51:12 AMAs for pop cultural memeage, the only film I could think of from this century (just) was Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring...

Speaking of memeage, the Star Wars Prequels are the undisputed kings.

Quote from: radiator on 30 September, 2020, 03:35:10 AMParasite was great no doubt - and a moderate box office hit - but I doubt the average man on the street would have even heard of it.

I'd consider Parasite which won the top 4 Academy awards and was well recognised in the press as being an exceptional work fits the Jaysus criteria, not least for being the first foreign film to be so well regarded in the industry.

Not cult classics or anything, much as I'd love Dredd to be remembered as groundbreaking cinema, but the ones that'll go down in history as being among the most important of their age.

Iconic classics of monoculture are films like Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. They're the Raiders of the Lost Ark of the modern era.

No need to be parochial.

In the past few years there are plenty of what will be recognised as classics from Asia: Parasite, Train to Busan being obvious examples.

There are many others that show the art is as rich as it's ever been, often better.

Lucas told Spielberg he was mixing genres so it was dropped.

Fascinating!  Lucas was right of course, keeping both pulp heroes and villains as regular humans dealing with an external supernatural was the way to go, but it is amusingly ironic from the man that would add interdimensional aliens and flying saucers to the Indyverse.

And well before the indulgences of the Prequel era — Lucas's outline for Indiana Jones and the Saucermen from Mars was put down in 1993. Double twist: it was Spielberg who had a problem with aliens.

Quote from: sheridan on 22 September, 2020, 08:11:59 AMI'd have thought the biggest danger would have been comparisons to Doctor Strangelove (etc).

Lucas or Spielberg were never shy about putting homages in their films. They're the generation that wore their cine influences on their sleeve. Raiders is all ready a nostalgic mash-up of things they loved.

Ron Cobb, an influential film designer of many movies, including Alien and Back To The Future, has died.

Ron's concept art for Arnold Ernst Toht (depicted as Christopher Lee) as a Nazi-Cyborg in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lucas told Spielberg he was mixing genres so it was dropped.

One of the Facebook groups that often has people complaining that 2000 AD isn't as good as it was in the old days and that all new series suck now has people busy complaining about 2000 AD "rehashing" old ideas, even though after one episode we have literally no idea how the new Hookjaw is going to play out.

You can't please some people.

I think universal love for The Out disproves this.

As seems to be the other option, a continuation will probably end up on HBOMAX.

I'm looking forward to this. The worm looks brilliant, Paul looks fey, plus Charlotte Rampling. No Feyd Rautha though? I'm assuming they're combining two characters to have Rabban pull double nephew duty.

Since the film only covers the first half of the first book, I presume Feyd won't have a role until maybe the second film – if it gets made.

Originally it was going to be Rom of the Reds and got changed to Rok to avoid copyright infringement of another character.

It was originally Rom of the Rovers — double the infringement.
