I like thirty seconds of a LINKIN PARK song. I've got excuses and everything (they pinched SOAD's guitar player), but Goering and Himmler had excuses ...

What the hell is wrong with you?? I have a good mind to call the loony bin...

Liking something Linkin Park have done is like masturbating while thinking of a family member; everyone's done it once, but you don't want to make a habit of it. In my defence, seconds 0-34 really are brilliant. For reminding me of Tilly and The Wall, 8-ball wins the SONGS I LIKED BUT NEVER GOT ROUND TO BUYING award, sponsored by Royal Blood, which I like but haven't ... you get it.

Oooh! Spooky. Royal Blood was one of the bands that nearly made the list. http://youtu.be/-_3mNCaJgNM

When anybody mentions Linkin Park my brain defaults to a video focus-grouped on a bunch of tweens hopped up on Sunny Delight. http://youtu.be/pmUTBDuUGz8
Whatever happened to Rico, Dolman and Cadet Paris? I'm sooo out of the loop.

That was terrible, but I suppose they were doing their best to disassociate themselves from the black clad skate-goth thing from the early noughties, like MCR with their last record. Speaking of goths, Lana Del Rey embodies a wine bar/Topshop idea of sophistication, but I like this anyway. Whoever she's working with these days * understands what works for her, and the production is head, shoulders and a beehive up-do above what she's put out before:

POUT OF ORDER

Endearingly meta given that the only worthwhile contribution to popular music which The Black Keys have ever made relies entirely on a Genius guest producer and vocalist.

Then there's the current feud with him and Jack White in which the latter perfectly reasonably accuses the former of ripping off The White Stripes' sound while steadfastly failing to mention that said White Stripes were simply Jon Spencer Blues Explosion copyists with better marketing.

Infinite regression along the path of Pussy Galore and the whole concept of turning up the overdrive on blues riffs to a relentless, thumping bass drum a accompaniment.

And why do all these bands have colours in their names?
We never really die.

The colour of Pussy in the case of the latter. A dispute concerning who had the idea of ripping off whomever first had the idea of ripping off someone else within the context of a musical form whose central, foundational motif is mimesis seems especially ridiculous when all the acts involved are basically Blues Hammer. That spat between Jack White and ... everyone he's ever met is brilliant, and the kind of thing you rarely get to see now acts are all media trained into bland anonymity.

Being lazy, it's basically  6music for background when silence isn't essential...

Anyway, happy to see Aidan Moffat & John Grant there. Must have missed that Jools' appearance somehow but do love GMF  :)

Not a recommendation AT ALL, but I've realised that the new Arctic Monkeys single reminds me of The Importance Of Being Idle, which was already ripping off The Small Faces, The Kinks, Cockney Rebel, and probably a dozen obscure sixties outfits I'm unaware of. Pop might finally be eating itself, as predicted.

Pop ate itself years ago, we're just dealing with the excretory aftermath! Z

Beg to differ on the value of the Black Keys, who I think earn their worthwihileness by producing great music  as opposed to schtick - the Auerbach/Jack White feud is entirely in Jack White's head, so its not so much a feud between them.... but yes, saying a 21st Century Blues band has ripped off another 21st Century Blues band is like Bernard Matthews trying to copyright the Turkey.

Theres an article on Forbes where TBKs are dismissed for their "faux" credibility and authenticity, when I think the endearing thing about them is their total lack of guile.  They like the kind of music I like and tend to make something in that vein... I find that worthwhile, especially in teh front row sweating out a few pounds I can ill afford to lose!

One other worthwhile thing they've done, even if you dont like the music, is to get to the position they are in now without any king making from the music press - they have built up sales without great press - without any press really!  No "have I married my sister?" "Am I shagging Kate Moss?" or genreal self aggrandizing bullshit shenanigans to pad out mediocre talent and substandard albums and to make any music journalists job easier/sexier/cooler

HdE

I got  copy of Brian May's album 'Back To The Light' last week. Two, in fact, due to an Amazon seller with an incredibly crappy attitude selling me his beer-oaked, cigarette flavoured second hand copy and having the cheek to pass it off as new. But, I digress.

This would be a pretty middling album if not for the double whammy of 'Love Token' and 'Resurrection', which make the album worthwhile all by themselves. The latter has some pretty inspiring riffage on it.
