Fantastic: Action Comics (best issue yet),

I stopped getting this, which may be premature as I'm not sure they had many to go in the current story arc. Have they gotten back to the original premise? Young bejeaned Superman doing stuff and learning more about his place in the world, etc, etc? (Sound a bit boring saying it like that, but that was what drew me to the series.)

QuoteEarth 2 (what a way to start a series!)

I've seen advertisements for this. Basically golden age version of the characters I assume? Is the bracketed bit meant positively or negatively?

I recently caught up on the second to last* Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Frankenstein.

Very enjoyable if a bit predictable. I'm curious to see that there's about to be a crossover with
Frankenstein and Animal Man
next issue. I know a cross-over between
Animal Man and Swamp Thing
will happen at some point, and I thought that would be first.

Oh, and that artwork depicting Swamp Thing as the Warrior king looked great. I wonder, now this version has an actual human inside (which I think was actually the original premise retconned out by Mr Moore) does that mean he won't be able to to the whole 'travel through the green and regrow elsewhere' thing any more? Or maybe he can but his original body remains intact. I always thought that was an interesting idea in Alan Moore's run.

*digital cheapskate that I am. I'll admit  the scrolling up and down is bugging me a bit now and I'm thinking of grabbing floppies, but we'll see.

Very much positively is was a fantastic comic. I don't think its Golden Age versions as we know them, its a reboot of the old Earth 2 in the way that DCNu was a reboot of the main Universe. So here Jay Garrick is some young man drifting through life until he finds... (no spoilers)... I think me might be like Wally was when he first became Flash (guesswork).

Whatever, a great comic.

My Pulls
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4 Preview (Probably dropping this series after next issue. I keep trying, but this sort of fantasy adventure is just not for me)
GLORY #26 (Still reading this digitally)
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #9 (Personally I'm digging this series. Its not exceptional, but there's some magic too it)
SAGA #3 Preview (This book is so banana. I love it)
SAUCER COUNTRY #3 (Really liking this series so far. Gorgeous artwork)
THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #3 (Speaking of bananas Sci-Fi. This is another one that's completely off the wall in a great way)
THE SHADE #8 (OF 12) (Still a great series)

Other Comics You Should Care About
LEVIATHAN GN (S&S ED) (I already own the Rebellion edition of this collection so I don't need to double dip. But contained within is one of the more amazing stripes to come out of 2000 AD in the last few years. The Leviathan a ship so large its a floating city, falls through the cracks in reality and is lost. Years latter the ship is still searching for a port in an endless ocean, while something evil lurks in its bowels)
DEADENDERS TP (Ed Brubaker sci-fi dystopian yarn. Probably won't get it any time soon, but its on my radar.)

Not much in the way of previews this week.

Quote from: Evil Pants on 08 May, 2012, 12:01:09 AMThese periodic anthologies seem to be last dredges of what I consider to be Vertigo comics...especially now that they just announced that Sweet Tooth has been cancelled.

We may have been over this before, but Spaceman, Fairest (and Fables), Saucer Country, and New Deadwardians are all really good. Punk Rock Jesus (Sean Gordon Murphy!) and Collider (more Sci-Fi comics!) both look like they can be really good too.

I don't think Vertigo is as dead as you think.

Also, I think its about time I gave Sweet Tooth a shoot. I don't think I had a good grasp of what it was about when in launched so I over looked it. When I found out it was a Post-Apoc type book it was well into the run. I do like that stuff.

Yeah, I know we differ a bit on this, and that's ok. For me, some of the content that they're doing right now (Saucer Country being a great example of this), feels more like something that would have come out through Wildstorm rather than classic Vertigo. And just subjectively speaking, I'm not enjoying most of their current output compared to previous years. I've never bought this few Vertigo books in my life. Again, just my opinion. And although I was looking forward to Mystery In Space, I thought it was quite week, especially compared to the last 2 anthologies that Vertigo did. The Ming Doyle was the sole exception, IMO. Again, just my 2 cents, which really don't matter because what really matters is that someone is liking them and buying them.

As for Sweet Tooth...I do enjoy that one quite a bit. Lemire's Essex County is a personal favourite of mine, so I'm not really objective though.

A big week for me:

Peter Bagge's Reset #2 - Took a chance on the first issue, and I'm glad of it. One of Bagge's loveable losers again, this time in a pseudo sci-fi context that lends itself well to character driven stories.
Manhattan Projects #3
Mondo #2 by Ted McKeever - Issue one was one of the best things I've read this year.
Saga #3
Secret History of D.B. Cooper #3 - Completely off the wall psychedelic sci-fi. I can't imagine that there are many 2000AD fans that wouldn't dig this.
Sixth Gun #22 - The last issue might have been the very best single issue of this series to date. Remains very high on my "best of" list every month.

And a whole bunch of graphic novels:

Are You My Mother by Alison Bechdel - I absolutely loved loved loved Fun Home. A really staggering graphic novel, that kind of blew my mind. It worked as a technical piece, but also on an emotional level, and I'm hard pressed to figure out how she's going to top it. My expectations are VERY high for this.

Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart - Oni puts out some of the best stand alone graphic novels in the market place, and so seeing them publish a spy thriller written by the writer of one of my favourite sci-fi comic writers gets my blood pumping.

Crogan's Loyalty by Chris Schweizer  - The 3rd graphic novel in Schweizer's massive Crogan epic. The concept is that the Crogans are a family with roots all throughout history. So there was a Crogan in the Spanish Civil War, and one that was a pirate, and so on. It's a great way to tell all-ages adventure stories with a historical backdrop. Loyalty is set in the American Civil War, with 2 brothers on either side of the conflict.

Adventure Time # 4
Manhattan Projects # 3
Secret Service # 2
Secret History of DB Cooper # 3 (although my LCS never get this so will probably be a couple of weeks before I track down on ebay - only managed to get # 2 this week).

Of all those I am most looking forward to Secret Service.  There was nothing unique or outstanding about # 1 but I liked it - good solid comic IMO.

Reposting my pulls because I've added signifigantly more previews and covers, not to mention a few more additions to the list

My Pulls
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4 Preview (Probably dropping this series after next issue. I keep trying, but this sort of fantasy adventure is just not for me)
GLORY #26 Preview (Still reading this digitally)
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #9 (Personally I'm digging this series. Its not exceptional, but there's some magic too it)
PRINCELESS VOL. 1: SAVE YOURSELF
SAGA #3 Preview (This book is so banana. I love it)
SAUCER COUNTRY #3 Preview (Really liking this series so far. Gorgeous artwork)
THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #3 Preview (Speaking of bananas Sci-Fi. This is another one that's completely off the wall in a great way)
THE SHADE #8 (OF 12) Preview (Still a great series. EDIT: Jill Thompson issue!)

Other Comics You Should Care About
LEVIATHAN GN (S&S ED) Preview (I already own the Rebellion edition of this collection so I don't need to double dip. But contained within is one of the more amazing stripes to come out of 2000 AD in the last few years. The Leviathan a ship so large its a floating city, falls through the cracks in reality and is lost. Years latter the ship is still searching for a port in an endless ocean, while something evil lurks in its bowels. Gorgeous artwork by the one-and-only D'israeli.)
DEADENDERS TP (Ed Brubaker sci-fi dystopian yarn. Probably won't get it any time soon, but its on my radar.)

Evil Pants

Some reviews of this week's books.

Saga #3

We are three issues in, and this title is literally exploding. By that I mean that while the book started with a small event (the birth of a baby girl), the scope of the story gets bigger with every issue. As our heroes continue their escape, more and more characters are introduced. Every one of them fits into the larger web that BKV is weaving, and every one of them has a back story that is intricate and important in it's own right. The newcomer to our saga in this issue is Izabel, a half-dismembered ghost who volunteers her services in helping our heroes...for a price.

I'm liking Saga a lot, partly because there's really nothing like it on the stands right now. It's the opposite of high concept, in a market that's almost exclusively high concept right now. I'm also liking it because it's a character driven piece. The massive space epic is just the backdrop, and quite frankly the strength of the Romeo & Juliet premise would be enough to drop into pretty much any genre. So far, no missteps. Well on it's way to one of my favourite regular comics.

Mondo #2

In a medium that has produced it's share of weirdness, Ted McKeever does weird better than almost anybody out there....and Mondo might be his weirdest ever. Our hero here is Catfish, whose job it is to enhance chicken meat with steroids. He accidentally falls victim to his own process, and Mondo is born, a jumped roid monkey, who then proceeds to spend the next couple of issues battling mutated chickens and other funstrocities. In other hands this would be a disaster, but with McKeever it just all seems to make sense. Good kinetic storytelling.

Manhattan Projects #3

In an alternate version of the US where science has gone terribly wrong, Richard Feynmam, Wernher Von Braun, Joseph Oppenheimer, Einstein, and an A.I. made out of the consciousness of dead Franklin Roosevelt are the Manhattan Project, a super secret Weapons program which designs terrible shit for the US to point at people. It's Jonathan Hickman, so accessibility isn't necessarily the prime objective. But a fun story featuring weird science is the goal here, and thus far Hickman is achieving his aims. I will say that this book might start to suffer if we don't get a somewhat relatable character to care about soon.

Secret History Of DB Cooper #3

Writer/artist combos usually are better at one of those two disciplines than the other, and with Churilla it's starting to become obvious that it's the art by a long shot. Not that DB Cooper is really suffering that much as a book, but one suspects that if Churilla had someone like Greg Rucka or Nick Spencer to help him with the pacing here, that this would  be the best comic book on the market. Right now it has to be satisfied with being one of the best looking comics on the market, with a premise that is strong, though maybe a little unfufilled.

Sixth Gun #22

Absolutely as good as it's ever been, and maybe even better. With Scalped finishing up, and things like Prophet and Saga still being relatively new, Sixth Gun might be the very best monthly title for my money right now.

Reset #2

This is a weird little time travel story by Peter Bagge. I really enjoyed #1, but #2 seems to have stalled a bit, or at the very least revisited story territory from issue one that it didn't really need to. Still, I'm in this for the duration.

Conan The Barbarian #4

We've all had this happen. You are enjoying a run. The writing is great, the art is awesome, everything clicks. And then the artist takes a break...or leaves the book. It's a bad thing right? James Harren might be the exception to this. He's now done sub issues for 2 books that I enjoy: BPRD, and now this. And quite frankly, knocked them both out of the park. I am digging what Becky Cloonan is doing on Conan for sure. It's an interesting take, and it's a different approach to a character that often looks like he just injected  steroids into his eyeballs. But Harren not only riffs on what Cloonan is doing, but adds a commercial accessibility that was missing before. This might be the best issue of Wood's run thus far. Harren is a guy to watch.

Daredevil #12

Still not 100% sold on Chris Samnee's art on this (love his work elsewhere), but the strength of the storytelling transcended any quibbles I might have with the art. Some good reveals here, and we might start getting some answers as to why Matt Murdock has been so chipper lately.

Justice League #9

I still don't care about the main part of this book, but Johns and Frank's take on Shazam might be the best superhero thing DC is doing right now.

THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK

I, Cosh

I don't normally buy terribly many comics but I was at a loose end last Thursday so I decided to favour Travelling Man with my hard-earned groats and try out the first issues of a few things which I've seen recommended here lately.

First pick was Fury Max #1. Very surprised not to have seen more mention of this around here to be honest. Garth Ennis returning to the scene of his Punisher Max crimes with what would appear to be the perfect vehicle to allow him to create an ongoing series with the capacity to explore hard-drinking manliness and virtually any theatre of war he wants from the past seventy years. Seems like something he's been building up to for a long time.

This first issue really just sets up the first arc and what I assume will be some recurring supporting characters. The only fly in the ointment is the teased involvement of the tedious Barracuda at some point. I'd prefer Love Sausage myself.

Onto the pick of the bunch next: Prophet #21. I realise you pair have been banging on about this for months but it really was an excellent slice of nasty sci-fi. From a 2000AD perspective, what it reminded me of most was the wonderfully handled perception of the alien from Atavar and Kingdom. The one thing that lets this down is the art which I considered to be somewhat rudimentary, although there was some nicely atmospheric colouring.

Last and, sadly, least by considerable distance was Manhattan Projects #1. The art on this really wasn't to my taste either and, unfortunately, the story did nothing to make up for it this time. It read, to me, like a weak pastiche of mid-90's Grant Morrison and I frequently found it hard to follow. Not because there was anything particularly complex about the narrative but because the pages are often very poorly laid out. For example, I'm still not entirely sure whether the pages split chromatically between the two Oppenheimers are supposed to be read right across as a splash or in traditional order.

Overall, as Meat Loaf frequently tells us, two out of three most certainly aint bad. With the imminent conclusion of The Boys, I will be down to one monthly comic and I have no desire to add to that. I will definitely pick up the first collection of Prophet. Fury will depend what mood I'm in. Might wait for the library to do me a favour there.

Oh, if anybody wants these issues, they're welcome to them.
We never really die.

For me this week:

DHP #12 - No Neal Adam's Blood? 4 stars!

Mind MGMT #1 - One of my most anticipated comics of the year.

Ragemoor #3

Resident Alien #1

Prophet #25

Comic Book History Of Comics GN - Collecting a great mini series about the history of comic books by the same team that brought you Action Philosophers.

Chew #26

The Cape HC - A mini series that seemed to get lost in the shuffle this year, but that I would recommend to pretty much anyone who loves their superhero comics on the raw side. This, as they say, is a nasty piece of business, but well worth your time.

Near Death #8 - I've been reading this digitally and then picking up the trades, but my friends Ed Brisson & Jason Copland have a back up feature starting up in this issue. It's based on Ed's "Murder Book" concept. If you love gritty crime comics, Murder Book is pretty much a must.

I've enjoyed both issues for sure. Not as much as I enjoyed Jason Aaron's recent Punisher Max run, but definitely was worth my time.

Prophet # 25 and Resident Alien # 1 for me this week.  Resident Alien # 0 was a solid comic - good dialogue, strong art and plot so expect more of the same from the new issue.

Loved the first few issues of Prophet.  The change of direction in the last issue although interesting left me a little cold though.  Could do with the plot getting a little more definition in this next issue IMO.

After reading through this thread I decided to abandon my policy of ignoring the comics section in my local Forbidden Planet (I'm more a TPB person) and have a look through their selection*.  Thanks to the good things I've been hearing here I've now started buying a number of titles.

New Deadwardians, Saucer County and Saga have all already been mentioned and I have to agree they are excellent reads, each in a totally different genre.  Bit unhappy that New Deadwardians is only an 8-part mini-series, it seems like the sort of slow burner that could easily sustain a longer run

My other purchase is Alpha Girl a comedy cross between a zombie apocalypse/28 days later scenario with the twist that the only infected people are
women
, the infection been caused by a
cosmetics company's
experiments with
pheremones in perfumes
of all things.

*Although I maintain my apathy towards super-hero comics.
