Title: Youtube Gold
Post by: radiator on 10 November, 2006, 12:11:43 PM
Hows about a thread collecting together everyone's favourite bits of Youtube goodness to dazzle and amaze everyone elses colleagues/friends/partners?

To get the ball rolling:

Darth Vader being a smartass (as posted by IIRC Logan on another thread):

Avenue Q is the best musical currently playing and you should see it. Especially if you don't like musicals. It's just an enormously fun piece of theatre and perfect for a 2k readers comic sensibility.

Speaking of 2k...Alan Moore, stranger to hairdressers.

I picked that game up for a quid a few months back. To be fair, the live-action is ten times better than the Stallone film.

This guy, a Norwegian fella, went to my uni, though he quit at the end of the first year. I don't think the tutors could teach him anything. Bit of a genius, and not as you may think a one trick pony (check out his other films). He seems very popular on Youtube, and I think he has a bright future ahead of him.

I'm not going to preach at anyone, because I've laughed at some really wrong stuff in my time- but I just thought that was one of the saddest things (in the proper sense of the word) that I've ever seen.

I felt really sorry for the little guy.  He knew he didn't stand a chance, but he kept plugging away anyway.  The audience were scumbags.

:(
Title: Re: Youtube Gold
Post by: paulvonscott on 18 November, 2006, 11:32:45 AM
He was half the size, and didn't have a chance.  He obviously had enough of a disability that he couldn't get back up without some sort of support.

Despite myself I laughed, but it was very sad, and the perefect example of why I don't like (or normally watch) these sort of shows.

Arranging for two seriously mismatched midgets to fight while a crowd of baying yanks shout 'midget fight' isn't a good way to sort out relationship problems IMHO.

Mind you, the littler guy started it.

I want to see the ultimate deathmatch - 54 Jones vs Johnnyeyebrows.

54 starts strong.  He leads with a group hug and follows up with social consciousness raising.  Sadly, JEB responds by flattening him with a right hook, then pounding him into a pancake.

That Buck Rogers spoof is made all the funnier by the two-part episode of South Park in the last season which was basically a slagging off of how shit and unoriginal Family Guy was - and the funniest bit of SP's current season is a direct lift  of one of Family Guy's most well-known sketches...

HOLY SHIT! This is possibly the worst, but funniest, song ever!

It's a Christian Rock song about a little boy's mother who's 'going to see Jesus' (i.e. going to cark it) on Christmas Eve. Naturally, the boy needs to buy her some new shoes 'so she looks beautiful for Jesus.'

Truly awful, I cringed and laughed in equal measure. I think Rob Lowe in in there somewhere too, wierd.

Merry Christmas!

Because Christmas still isn't Christmas for me without these two.

A quick annecdote for you. Joan Morecambe was babt sitting her grandchildren one day when the sports show that was on in the background was cancelled due to rain. In it's stead they showed a compilation of Morecambe and Wise sketches. She sat the kids down to watch it without explaining what it was or who they were. Afterwards she asked what they thought. Without pausing to think the eldest said "Well I like the one with the glasses"...

And it's a Dante story title, too.

On the subject of the (excellent) 'Mall Divided' video, for essential electrics, couldn't their neighbours have run extension cords either under under tape rigger-style or suspended above harms way?  It seems very defeatist when there's juice just 20 feet away... In everleasting quest for music that is interesting to watch as well as listen to. I recalled a nother oldish song used from old Kris Kristofferson movie of the same name.

Convoy.

A song that in alot of circles, has never been known for it's popularity.

Actualley this isn't even the original tune. I'm not sure who sung the original and I'm not too familar with the person responcible for this cover version. Of which I have fathomed that it wasn't the originaal when I noticed the addition of some country/western style guitar accompaniing the more familar tunes.

Watching the film clip and listening to the same old song had me imaingining what if there were 'Hell-Trekkers' version of this song. Space Trucking even, but imagine cruiseing through the Cursed Earth. Not nessarily at odds with the Judges, though. There is also another very likely candidate for the green boots of Joe Dredd if you have  taken notice of the sheriff featured in this here video.

The trailers for the Studio Ghibli adaptation of the Farthest Shore are available for perusal.  LeGuin has said it takes liberties with the story, but holds up as a good movie in it's own right - which is quite a contrast to her opinions on the Sci-Fi Channel's adaptation (and they're apparantly so worried about comparisons to their Mortal Kombat-inspired version of the Earthsea tales, their lawyers have nixed a release for the anime version in the US).

It's unmistakeably a Ghibli movie, Nausicaa being the first thing that comes to mind.

Wasn't her biggest problem with both versions that none of the characters are black like what they're meant to be?

Looks interesting, but I've never been able to take to Studio Ghibli's stuff. I'd recommend the books to anyone though. Sort of like Harry Potter if it wasn't a load of whimsical Mallory Towers pish. And if the writer could actually write.

Mmmm, the narration, song and background designs have the tone of teh book spot-on, but god help me I can never get past people looking like Cheops from Battle of the Planets.

I also liked the note about Ged at the end.  More trailers should have footnotes.

The venerable PWEI Late Late Show clip has a hypnotic effect.  One moment we're in stultifying middle Ireland with a gaggle of blue-hairs watching Gaybo (Reigning Grannies' Favourite), Fergus Gibson (Professional Liar) and Harry Crosbie (Cheeky Chappie Developer) having a sonambulent chinwag, then suddenly it all falls away and we're watching a PWEI gig, which could be taking place in a different century, never mind country.  Just when you've forgotten where you came in, it's all over and there's Gaybo again.  The horror.

I think it's time for a return engagement on the Late Late - let's see how they fair against The Plank.

At First I though this kid was amazing. Apparently, he has been doing weights since he was the age of two. Thats what the news presenter says anyway. Thoug I would find that hard to imagine the results look just amazing.

The kid now fifteen years old doesn't just have a six pack stomach, but a eight or ten pack.

It's like the head of young boy has been re-atttached to the body of fully grown weight lifter.

Despite all this, I can't ignore the fact that it does look alittle odd. Espeically he and his parents have been doing this intenionally and can't help but think if he's going to be having alot of troubles later on in life or it he's even going to be able make it to the age of thirty without suffering severe complications surrounding the amount of stress he has placed on his own body at such a young age.

This is the sort of movie that should have featured in the pages of 2000AD.

It's got all the right stuff in it.

A rock band, a rocket car, tie trel, red-lizard aliens masquarading as men, there's guns, women and funny looking spacecraft hovering in orbit. There's other weird stuff there as well as John Lithgo [Third Rock from the Sun], Peter Weller [Robocop], Clancy Brown [Highlander], Jeff Goldblum [Jurrasic Park], Billy Vera [ He sang a song called 'At this Moment'.

So in the words of the man himself.

'Dearg Doom' was the only decent Horslips music I could find that was available on You-Tube, that is!  There were a few of their other songs but no sign 'The Tain' or 'Book of Invasions'.

WishBone Ash, have some very good instrumental and lyrics as well from their 1972 Argus album. Just looking at the cover pictured below.

Just very inspring stuff.

Mattewic asked 'Where Am I'

Well, after watching the video and then doing a search for this place on Goggle Earth (Portmeirion).

I was surprised to see that it's village in Wales where the river almost meets the shore (Traeth Bach estuary.)

I thought the village seemed very north eastern European from the persective of the mobile phone camera that the tourist was carrying and would never had guessed that it was in Wales.

It's location being just altittle south south west and almost under the shadow of Snowdon.

A interesting place if you like reading Slaine.

I then felt inspired to search for any Snowdon or Dinas Emrys videos on the You-Tube....

another one of my favorite shows from the ealry eighters. MUst have been 1979 or 1980 actualley.
Ito think this was what I belived tobe state of the art.

Watching this version of the introductory sequence. You might be forgiven for thinking that the entire cast other than the lead character ( Gil Gerard ) are bunch of females with male and female names.

Must have been a music film clip taken from the theme used regularly on that show or from the pilot movie for the series.

JUst to make a amendment. I don't really think it's lame. Ist's just that version of the opening music is really mellow.

One of those sci/fi shows I liked watching as kid. Like Classic Star Trek. ( It's was interesting how much those two shows were ali9ke back then.)  I used watch it because it was escapism for me back then.

But I watch neither of those shows, nor the newer episodes of Star Trek anymore.

"Watching this version of the introductory sequence. You might be forgiven for thinking that the entire cast other than the lead character ( Gil Gerard ) are bunch of females with male and female names. "

That's the original opening for the pilot movie that got a cinematic release in the U.S., it promised a lot more than it gave, unfortunately.

Great wee film, Dudley.

I empathise with the kid who ran away from Ann Widdecombe.  Even without the bodyguards and the camera-people and the bomardment of questions without warning, I'd run away from her.

Still, good to know that Cameron's solution to hoodies is to plan to have them all incarcerated.  (Good, in that I hope most people will realise that's fucking insane, and not vote for him.)

Changing the subject slightly.

The Angels.

Here's latest song that I found by accident by a favorite Austrlain Rock band that have been a big fan of from the mid-eighties all the way to the mid ninties. After going to about afew of their concerts over period when they must have realised about four of their albums. My euthusiasum for their music has died down alot since that time.

I still like listining to them. Though the main line completely  broken up and reformed differently. So their not really the same backing band. Though they do sound the same.

It's only the lead singer and I heard that because copyright laws they are now refereerf to diffrently.

'Doc Neeson and the Angels' or something like that.

It good song anyway. Very much the same stuff they had developed when they went international since 'Beyond Salvation', 'Redback Fever', 'Skin and Bone'

Im not sure who Red Phoneixis. It must be the name of his even newer line up.

And that's not work-safe, for anyone who's wondering.

(I know - the clue's in the name - but, really, very not work-safe.)

It's also not "gold".  It's tin.  Why don't we have a "Youtube Tin" thread?

Are you kidding, Dudley - that's pure gold, I tells ee, pure gold!

You can imagine how, if that tape were slowed down, then split up to contain 40 minutes worth of adverts, with the bits immediately before and immediately after the adverts repeated, and the bits at the end of one segment repeated at the beginning of said segment as a preview, you could make a standard 1-hour long US documentary from that.

That - and the guy showed us how to make a working laser gun.

It is bad, isn't it? I saw Shatner interviewed about this a while back; he said that it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, but a lot of fans couldn't see past his Kirk persona and didn't get his sense of humour. I was never a huge fan of the man until I heard his 2004 album Has Been, which in my opinion is one of the best albums of the past decade.

Strangely, I'd agree with you on this!
It's a great album- dripping with irony on one hand, but there are also a couple of genuinely moving tracks on there where he talks about his estranged daughter.

It was a great adaptation of the Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn books that Canadian series, better than any of the films I've seen (one of which has Huck join the circus for no good reason). I was please to see a while back it's just made it onto DVD.

Regarding the Outgeek topic.

It's not easy being a Geek, it's not glamous and I guess essential that you really need to fight a Geek's everyday battle if you take up the life style for it's few advantages....

It's abnout repect, but will Geeks ever get respect.

Though I beleive it was couple of year back that Geeks were starting coming up in the world. It was suddenly sexy to smart and then geeks started to look fashionable.

Somebody coined a term Geek Chique.

When geeks started working out, playing abit more sport, cleaning up their spotty complexions. While retaining their thick rimmed glass's

It's probably just a phase though.
